Based, on what you told me about your gaming tastes, I would say only Ninja Gaiden is a must buy for you. VF5 too if you can't wait for the better 360 version.
Why didn't you get a better videocard than the 8800 GTS though if you had the money for a PS3? That's what I would have done instead.

because by the time a game comes out that actually demands a better videocard than the 8800 GTS, that card will be $250 instead of $700

Actually, there're games now that already demand an even better videocard than a 8800 GTX. The Geforce 9 to be released around December is rumoured to be twice as fast as a 8800 GTX. I was going to spend/waste $250 to get a overclocked 8800 GTX Ultra to replace my 8800 GTX but I figured that a 5% improvement for 3 months isn't worth that amount of money.

went to Fry's, balked at cable prices.
came back home, got it off amazon.com for the no-sales-tax win.
also got a now-required DVI->VGA cable for my Oppo DVD player and an HDMI cable for the PS3 for $11 instead of $60 (probably would have been $100 at Best Buy)
I bought no games and 300 on Blu-ray. The system has been out for a year. How depressing.
-
mlb07 is great, umm, I own vf5 and ninja gaiden but I mostly play my ps2 games on it. hardware bc with upscaling ftw.
shame about the ps3 games tho :(
-
yeah, I am waiting for 360 VF5 at this point tho and I played the hell out of NG and NG Black on Xbox so it's hard to get excited about version 1.3
SUPER STARDUST AHOY
-
lol ps3 :(
-
I thought this was a joke thread - you actually bought one? Like majority of the games coming out are bald space marine shooters and such, the games you didn't care for on 360.

then why did you buy it? :lol
-
1) I want hardware BC
2) I want to play Ratchet this fall
3) No price drop before MGS4 hits
4) I want upscaled Persona 3
5) I want the 5-disc Blade Runner BD set
6) I just got a nice bonus

SOMEONE DID SOME COMFORT BUYING! ENJOY YOUR REMORSE HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
-
Patel, also get a USB adapter for the PS3 if you want to play PS2 games on it. Responsiveness is still better with a PS2 controller and also rumble if that's what you like. I would also recommend Tekken 5:DR. It's a good purchase for $20. It shows the huge difference between rendering in HD compared to merely upscaling to HD. Also get a 24 inch monitor w/ HDMI since you now have a good PC + 360/PS3. 1080P gaming on a PC monitor is even better than gaming on a HDTV.
SOMEONE DID SOME COMFORT BUYING! ENJOY YOUR REMORSE HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
Even with the free stuff, buying the PS3 at this point is possibly dumber than us launch buyers. Because at least we didn't know there weren't going to be much worth playing for a long time or that the PS3 wouldn't be better for gaming in any way than a 360.
-
I bought no games and 300 on Blu-ray. The system has been out for a year. How depressing.
it hasn't even been close to a year... it's 7 months.
was the PS2 any good 7 months in? not really.

The PS3 came out in January?

Formula One: Championship Edition is a great game. However, it's not a game for everyone, due to being Formula 1 racing.
-
Tekken 5: DR is hilarious cause aside from the higher resolution it looks almost exactly like the PSP original lololol
-
Silent Bomber! R-Type Delta! Jumping Flash!
-
wait wait what, Silent Bomber and RType Delta are downloadable/!??!?!?!?!? OR ARE YOU JERKIN MY CHAIN
-
on jappa psn yah.
-
Yeah, I don't know what's on US PSN. I just know what duckroll's been telling me he downloaded.
-
SON OF A BITCH I WANT MY FUCKING RTYPE DELTA JESUS FUCK CHRISTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
ill check later tonight

The PS3 version has better character models and more special effects. Although the PSP version looks really nice, it doesn't even look as good as Tekken 5 on PS2. And it looks way better than an upscaled PS2 game which you're always making a big deal about. Also, it's a better way to spend 20 bucks than on ugly ass PSX games like Silent Bomber and R-type. If you hate WII, why would you want to play PSX games on a HDTV?
-
because its about gameplay, duh.
Tekken has shit gameplay, so a psp port of tekken on ps3 'arcade' has little appeal to me if it doesnt look significantly better.
-
he's wisely suggesting that given tekken's shit gameplay, the visuals are the only bit worth debating
-
Prole knows what I'm talking about. How many PS3 games are there now without shit gameplay? It's pretty hard just to get a shitty playing PS3 game with good graphics since most PS3 games look better on a 360. lol
-
Its hard to fight you when we've both lost.
Only on PS3 :(
-
Getting back on track, look into:
-Ninja Gaiden Sigma (has a demo)
-Minna No Golf 5 (I don't know if you can get the demo now)
-Super Stardust HD
-Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection Online (the online patch is coming very soon for the U.S.)
-Motorstorm (demo)
-Resistance Fall Of Man
-Gundam Musou (demo)
I'd say Virtua Fighter 5 too, but the 360 version coming is likely going to better, being based on version C and having online play...
It also isn't that TK5DR looks bad on PS3; it looks awesome in HD. The PSP version looking so close just shows the power of the PSP and how damn good the people at Namco are. :bow
-
AHEM! MLB07, the best version
-
We're on track, Lyte Edge. We're talking about how there's not much to play on the PS3.
AHEM! MLB07, the best version
How's the PSP vesion? I like playing soccer games on the PSP because they're not as complicated as the console versions. Console sports sims are getting too complicated nowadays. I don't even know what's going on when I try most Football or Baseball demos. Baskeball games are the only ones that I bother to learn anymore since it's my favorite sport. Too bad most PSP sports games seem to suck, except for the soccer games.
-
PSP version is ok but the nub is kinda lame for pitch placement, other than that its ace.
PS. The lame is countered by the placement icon existing until you pitch the ball, unlike the PS2/PS3 versions where the icon vanishes after 2 seconds regardless of whether or not youve placed the pitch
-
congrats, now replay all your PS2 games upscaled to 720p!! :o
-
Motorstorm is fun.
Resistance is pretty good, even though the ending is fucking horrible.
Rainbow Six: Vegas, if you haven't played it yet, is a must buy.
That's about it until Heavenly Sword. Play the demo. I wish it was longer, but what I got was awesome.
-
Now that you've caved and bought one go to http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/00/00/00/66/00/57/66005749._V32967487_.pdf (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/00/00/00/66/00/57/66005749._V32967487_.pdf) to get your FIVE FREE BLU-RAY MOVIES. No it's not limited to Amazon purchases, and don't wait, it's a limited time offer. Yeah the selections mostly suck but FREE MOVIES BIOTCH
Oh, and let me know if you're getting the PS1/2 memory card reader, cause if you're getting one I'm totally gonna bum yours for a day when I get my PS3. Otherwise, let me know cause my amazon cart has one in there at the moment and I'd love to take it out if necessary.
Of course, there's always the fry's 'loan' plan as well...
-
I bought no games and 300 on Blu-ray. The system has been out for a year. How depressing.
which means you and Mr. Tv owe me on that drinks bet!
Resistance is good if you like FPS games, which i don't recall you doing
Rainbow 6 is decent enough if you don`t have the X360/an X360
Ridge 7 is great, but not worth it if you already have the X360 version
Power Smash 3 is decent, if you don`t have the X360/an X360
Motorstorm is a good graphical show case, but the game itself is pretty average
Mingol 5 is great, but it`s missing a load of features - still the best game on PS3
Gundam : Line of Fire would shame the Dreamcast, let alone the PS3
Gundam musou is... musou - if you like Musou , then it might be of interest
Sega Golf is shite
Armoured Core 4 - Ps3 version is shocking.
Call of Duty 3 - ... X360... etc etc...
Oblivion - no expansion for Ps3 version, get the X360 version out of the bargain bins...
Dark Kingdom... err... no
VF5... X360... etc etc...
Basic rule of thumb is : if there is an X360 version, that`s the better version.
Just get Super Stardust and some BR and wait for the real PS3 launch in the back end of next year.
Insert Quote

yes indeed! Archive is awesome ... in jpn.
Isn't Gundam musou on 360 in USA?
-
I really want to import Mingol 5 but from the sound of it, I should wait for the localization which will probably fix the game as a whole (from its current state) and have added features (aka the actual full game).
And I'll use the PS3 for PS2 BC with games other than RPGs. I had VP:2 lock up on me for no reason, I'm just happy it happened 2 minutes into the game, instead of me grinding for an hour or so and me not saving :o
-
For retail disk games my PS3 collection is pretty small.
I have;
- Resistance (recommend)
- SONIC The Hedgehog (cant recommend)
- Virtua Fighter 5 (recommend)
- Ninja Gaiden SIGMA (recommend)
- Gundam CROSSFIRE (I personally like this - but dont recommend)
- Full Auto 2 BATTLELINES (recommend - and I have the 360 game and can recommend both)
- F1 Championship Edition (recommend)
- Ridge Racer 7 (recommend - even if you have RR6 for X360)
- Dark Kingdom (decent dungeon crawler/slasher)
- Marvel ULTIMATE alliance (looks better than X360 edition - otherwise its the same game)
- Genji Days of the Blade (I like this but dont feel comfortable recommending as it isnt for everyone)
Next in the pile for me looks to be Warhawk and Lair.
-
SON OF A BITCH I WANT MY FUCKING RTYPE DELTA JESUS FUCK CHRISTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
ill check later tonight
If I didnt already have it on PSOne disk id be hating NA PSN for not releasing it.
NA PSN PSOne selections suck bad compared to JPN PSN store.

I heard part of the problem is that SCEJ already got several licenses on PS1 games, to release on the PS Store in Japan, where SCEA/SCEE haven't done much. I think part of the reason we haven't gotten more could have to do with their terrible performance in NA.

That's a pretty big collection, considering the system is not even a year old.
My Recommendations
Retail Games
Ninja Gaiden Sigma-Especially if you are fond of action games and haven't played the X-box iterations to death.
RR7-If you have not played RR6
Mingol 5-or you can wait for the US version
Resistance-I don't own it, but plan to soon. Really slow starting but fun towards the end.
Don't buy
VF5. Get 360 version if you own a 360. Version C, better AI, online play.
Motorstorm. Overpriced. Maybe rental or second hand buy.
Sonic. Everything that has been said already will suffice.
Oblivion. Wait until the Game of the Year version is released. It will have the Shivering Isles content.
Essential Downloads
Stardust HD--Best value on the PS3.
Calling all Car--Online is as a waste land. But local games are really fun.
GTHD--is it still free? If it is download it.
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. Wait until the online enabled version comes out though. You will save some money.
Blu-Ray
Planet Earth. This is the only must buy Blu-Ray right now. I honestly don't care about movie releases right now since I rent anyway and PS3 upscaling is fine for me.
-

Already preordered:

-
i have:
oblivion (inferior to updated 360 version :'( -- i kept it because i feared my xxxtreme oblivion playtime would kill my 360 early)
mlb 07 the show
virtua fighter 5
psn:

-
Prole, WTF, man? You used to be my trolling idol. But first, it was the constant talk about Japafag RPGS, then now I find out you're playing Oblilvion (the worst version) on the PS3 even though you have a freaking 8800 GTX. You of all people should know that 8800GTX + Core 2 DUO= more powerful than PS3+360+WII. Get back your edge or no one will take your trolls seriously anymore. The legend of Drinky Crow must go on.
-
i modded oblivion to the point of self-destruction on my pc. since i can't resist the temptation to mod instead of actually PLAYING the game, i picked it up for the ps3 during a fit of capitalism one friday before the more tech-savvy reviews came in. somehow, the combination of a leather couch and a 60" screen resulted in my putting a good 40+ hours into the ps3 version and, well, here i am. :'(

Fuk, sell me your 8800 GTX for 300 bucks so that I can SLI since you're wasting it. It's not like there're tons to play on the PC and if you're not playing one of the best PC games in the last two years, you're wasting your GTX. I've installed Oblivion multiple times since I've been messing around with Vista/XP installations the last couple of months. The saves seem to work even after different variatons of mod installations. The last time, I played it, I just stuck with the official patch and some multi-threading/memory tweaks. It probably doesn't look as good as it could but it works perfectly since it's official.
I love the PC version too because I can cheat. Stat tweaking doesn't do much in this game though since level is far more important than attributes. I install kill guards just for fun sometimes but it's too bad some guys aren't killable. It'll be cool if you can just kill the emperor and mess up the game. I guess the only good reason for playing Oblivion on consoles is that cheaters like myself would have to do things for real. I tend to go back to playing for real though after messing around for a couple of hours but I keep my boosted stats.
-
fuck you, asspants -- i'm using my GTX to play a.d. 1701 and titan quest! EAT A DIKK AND DIE ALONE IN A GUTTER. DO NOT DISRESPECT MY PC.
-
fuck you, asspants -- i'm using my GTX to play a.d. 1701 and titan quest! EAT A DIKK AND DIE ALONE IN A GUTTER. DO NOT DISRESPECT MY PC.
I'm dissing your disrespect for your PC, asshole! You're the one who's playing Oblivion on a console. BTW, you don't need a GTX for those two games. It's complete overkill. Play Company of Heroes DX10 to see how much next-gen graphics can stress even a GTX. I can't wait for Geforce 9 because 1920x1200 is too much even for a single GTX to handle. I was thinking about SLi but the Geforce 9 is just around the corner and my attempt with 7900GTX SLI made my room temp even more unbearable than Las Vegas.
-
i own oblivion for the PC, AND the Kot9 expansion!
and i *have* played CoH DX10 because CoH is the best RTS in recent memory!
-
I dunno if i'd call PS3 Oblivion the worst version. That implies it totally sux or something.
-
Ok, the PS3 Oblivion is the weakest version of an excellent game. Does that make you happy now, MAF?
-
yeah
-
i'll pick up RR7 again onna discount, my daughter keeps yowling for it
-
Isn't RR6 better? Or was RR7 just harder?
-
How is Marvel Ultimate Alliance on PS3 compared to the 360 version? I know 360 has more content, but isn't just some more characters?
-
I think I heard ps3 version was better for technical reasons.
-
aliased pictures always seem sharper and more colorful.
-
my daughter LOVES LOVES LOVES car games, and she was really sad when i sold rr6 back. i don't need netplay; i just need something for her to watch/play.
-
how bout CARS
-
I think I heard ps3 version was better for technical reasons.
Nah, PS3 has native 1080P while 360 only upscales to 1080P. However, 360 version looks better overall and more importantly, has a much better framerate. PS3 version has some tilt action though if you dig that shit. I got rid of both versions and stuck with the supreme PC edition but I'll take the 360 version if I'm stuck with weak ass consoles.
my daughter LOVES LOVES LOVES car games, and she was really sad when i sold rr6 back. i don't need netplay; i just need something for her to watch/play.
Why don't you just get CARS for the 360? It's Disney and I remember reading that it was a decent game.
-
I only have 1080i on my tv anyway, so id do 720 p regardless.
-
I only have 1080i on my tv anyway, so id do 720 p regardless.
So your TV's only 1/2 FULL HD? J/K PS3 is only capable of rendering most games in 720p anyway, despite the marketing bullshit (big 1080P on the box). And 1080i/1080p HD movies look about the same to me from 10 ft away. I'm going to upgrade to a 58" or 65" 1080P plasma pretty soon though and 1080P might make a bigger difference on a larger screen. Right now my TV is a Sony 1080P LCD. The one major advantage that a 1080P TV has over a 720P TV is higher pixel density. So, theoretically, lower rez material like a PS2 game should look better on a 1080P TV.
-
I didnt want to spend more than 1000 on a good hdtv lcd months ago. 720p looks great to me.
-
I didnt want to spend more than 1000 on a good hdtv lcd months ago. 720p looks great to me.
Yeah, it doesn't seem to make much difference even on a 46" screen from 10 feet away or more. There're more important factors to worry about when buying a LCD such as contrast, brightness, and backlight bleeding. I can't believe the amount of backlight bleeding on Sony's supposedly top of the line LCD panel. Which is why I'm going back to Plasma. Plasmas are much better with 480I/P too. As much as I hate last-gen graphics, there're still a couple of games that I have to finish eventually.
-
I only have a 32 wide and im maybe 7 feet away so its hard to see that. I like my samsung set but that DNe or whatever requires some major fiddling with contrast/brightness but once you have a good custom set the tv is brilliant.
-

DNIE and equivalents on other LCDs are basically marketing bullshit. With the processing effects on, the picture looks better at first sight in a store. But when you take it home and start watching with normal ambience, you'll notice that the "enhanced contrast" just blurs all the dark details.
-
yeah I spent more time compensating for the special samsung tech than admiring it. Great set otherwise.
-

Samsung TVs are not bad. I bought the exact model that they use in 360 kiosks. I figured that if it's good enough for MS to display their games, it's good enough for me. It was pretty good as a TV but it sucked as PC monitor. 720p is too low a resolution for a 23" monitor. My current 24" true PC monitor kills the Samsung TV for PC purposes. Lesson here? Never use a TV as a PC monitor. lol
-
I heard that sony had a clouding problem in their lcd's that they made...standard. they basically decided not to fix it so I'd avoid their tv's unless you're sure of the quality.
-
how bout CARS
yet gonna either lol or kill me but i used it for trade-in credit on brave story :lol
EGAD BAD DAD
-
I turned DNIE off on my DLP and spent a long time calibrating it to get a good picture.
Sony has supposedly fixed the clouding problem on LCDs with the XBR4s.
edit: This thread is (sadly) making me want a PS3 despite not wanting more than a few games. I'd rebuy a 360 after the price drop next week if I knew MS had fixed their hardware issues. I think it's the talk of 720p PS2 games.
-
they actually have fixed the hardware issues. all the new ones got an extra heatsink and all the old ones sent in for repairs get the heatsink put in but it'll probably be a couple months until the 65 nm processors come out but the current ones don't have the huge red ring of death problem.
-
I'd prefer to wait for the 65 nm revision TBH. I feel I got burned pretty bad on my first one. The warranty change to units manufactured in 2006 and beyond was a good year too late.
-
someone explain to me what a 65 nm processor is please.
-
someone explain to me what a 65 nm processor is please.
nm means a measurement (I think nanometer) and the advantage of the 65 nm processor over the 90 nm is that since it's circuitry (or something, I'm not sure exactly which part is 65/90 nm) is smaller, the 65 nm processor uses less power, produces less heat, is less likely to break, and is cheaper to produce. that makes a console that is cheaper and more reliable.
-
As someone who has all 1000 points in Cars, I would suggest you stick with Ridge Racer. Or Burnout. Or DiRT.
