Title: Has there ever been a console as hated as the wii?
Post by: Shuri on October 14, 2007, 02:22:30 AM: I don't know if it's me reading too much gaming forums, but the only times people really mention the wii in a good light is when people talk about sales numbers. The VAST majority of comments from owners are completly negatives. Also do you guys even remember seeing those kind negative articles from the gaming press about gaming devs hating having to work on the wii ever being published about previous consoles? I've never seen a console with so many owners (myself included) talking or posting about how the console has been gathering dust for several months. People never talk about the games themselves, or when the do, it's usually wii fit, mario galaxy and smash bro. The rest of the lineup is completly ignored (for valid reasons in most cases).

It's weird how the wii is doing so well with sales but is getting slammed so much for real serious issues. It's gotten really bad in the past months. There was a thread about game devs discussing how the wii buble was about to burst on GAF, and all people kept saying was how hw sales were great yet completly ignoring how low software sales are. People arent buying the games at all. I knew quite a few people in real life who own wiis now; and they all got the same opinion -- outside of wii sports, they dont give a fuck about any other games out there. I wonder if its going to be a real problem later on for the wii.

One thing for sure, Nintendo has done an awesome marketing job on this. People are buying them, but eh, it's hard to ignore that the software lineup is total garbage for the most part. The next few years are going to be interesting I think..

The PS3, believe it or not, does have good aspects. The Wii has all of its bad aspects, and then some.

The only thing the Wii has over the PS3 is price, but the Wii is overpriced for what you get.

And about the Wii, i love it same as i loved my Gamecube, in other words...

it's mostly Nintendo 1st party games (Mario, Mario, Mario) with some 3rd parties added in for the extra fun, but this time, there is no RE0/1 or RE4 as timed exclusive, and i am not sure how will MH help Nintendo.

upscaling backwards compatibility. decent media center functionality. high hardware reliability. and, like the 360, hd-era graphics and processing. i'm one of the biggest ps3 bashers on the internet, but i bought one because it DOES have potential.

Yup, same mario games all over again, sure they ain't bad or anything, but ain't worth it.

You said it all right there. The Wii has the same problem, except worse.

Good traits? There have been a few good games, more than on the Wii at least. The hardware, though without a clear zinger, has shown intimations of being really good in the right hands. Free online is good, although the download speeds aren't optimum. They have gotten better with getting content online, and the downloadable games they do get are typically pretty great or unique. Sharing games is awesome. Not everyone will agree, but I think the XMB is just about the best dash there is.

If you want to get iffier, the hardware design would have been considered ambitious and admirable had there not been a paradigm shift in PC processors just prior to release. The Wii hardware would have been considered ambitious and admirable, well, like 7 years ago. Sony also has a better library for BC. Remember, I am in my "iffier" paragraph. PS3 also doesn't force its wretched waggle controls on everyone. The promising games on PS3 are also not as same ol' same ol' as on the Wii, but we have to recall that this is gaming, and nobody is as original as they could be.

In the things I hate to say category: Blu Ray support is nice, too. HD in general is awesome, and Nintendo has lost the game there.

The 360 gives me a lot of that stuff, but more importantly if offers the games. I will admit I played Folklore for more than an hour yesterday, and it was fun, BUT I still must ask "where are the games?" I can't think of a PS3 game I'd buy the system to play.

Nice. My plan is still to ride my 360 out until it is thoroughly dead, and then evaluate options. They seem to be releasing new SKUs pretty frequently, so if I could hold out for like another 6 months, who knows what the deal will be.

I'm not saying Nintendogs was a good game, but at least it showed much of the DS's potential. Where's that type of game for the Wii? Wii Sports? Seems like Nintendo and most third party developers are simply bankrupt of compelling ideas for the controller. It's clearly on the path of the DS's "map screen".

My BB extended warranty expires July 2008, and my 360 will expire around June (if it doesn't actually do so beforehand).

The Wii is a joke amongst more dedicated gamers, and compared to the 360 and the PS3, it is such a HUGE step backwards that it has helped stunt the growth of next gen, just like demi says...if nothing else, it will have the effect of creating a lot of multi-console titles that are graphically/technologically deficient just so they can be easy to port to the Wii.

3DO fanboys were kind of sad. Once the Saturn and PS1 were released, they kind of realized they had a dead machine so they pinned all their hopes on the M2. Which was supposed to be some super alien technology that would revolutionize gaming .. and all to be had for less than 300 dollars. Vaporware.

Diehard Jag fans were just Minter fanbois that would end every arguement with "bu bu bu Tempest 2000 justifies my purchase". So, it was kind of ridiculous to even bother.

Sadly, I've been trolling forums for that long.

Well, I threw in 32x just because it's a contrast to the Sega CD, which while laughable now, was something of a question mark when it was in development, and even shortly after released. After its failure, it was obvious the 3sx would face a similar fate.

It was profitable for Sega and there were a number of truly classic games for it: Dark Wizard, Lunar, Lunar 2, Snatcher, Vay, Popful Mail, Final Fight CD, Sonic CD, Shining Force CD, Keio Flying Squadron...it sold 6 million units, remarkably well for an add-on. It had tons of shovelware, tho.

The whole "ps3 doesn't have games coming out lol" is so early 2007. Get with the times lol. PS3 has just as many interesting new games coming out for than 360 imo, and they'd go together wonderfully.

ps2 is the best system ever. now that ps3 has got games coming out it's on my good list. my bud lemme borrow his ps3 and i played everyday shooter allllll day.

the only reason i've ever trolled ps3 was to piss off the die hard ps3 fans who bought a 600 dollar console when it DIDN'T have worth while games out or on the way, and actually thought games like Lair, Heavenly Sword, or whatever would be viable game purchases.

I'm also definitely going to get a 360 but I'm waiting until they fix some of its overheating problems.

and why the fuck do people think wii will bring in casuals somehow? I don't know ANYBODY that has a wii but doesn't have a 360. the biggest demographic in gaming currently is people who buy the sports games or games with large budgets and I really can't see any reason for them to even consider a wii when it sounds gay and probably will have bastardized versions of the types of games they buy (average gamer can probably tell that you'll use wiimote with a wii.)

if you're thinking that wii will bring in so many people who could never conceive of moving pictures on their television, then new developers will spring up and sell all the shit that you assume they would buy. real developers won't care to make shitty, gimmicky games for wii because they spent 20 years making real games and aren't going to suddenly make waggle clones.

In all honesty, if you are going HD, it's not a huge loss. It's kinda hit and miss, PS3 upscaling is. Some games just don't make the translation so hot. If you plan on playing PS2 games and using PS3 for HD, I'd suggest keeping a ghetto TV and PS2 for old shit and Wii trash.

Despite this it still gets on average at least two hours' use everyday, but has been kind of disappointing on the whole. I'm looking forward to Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, Wii Fit, the inevitable Animal Crossing game and Bomberman on WiiWare though.

The 360 has the BEST games by far. The Wii may be selling more hardware, but I bet most developers would rather support the 360 because its owners actually, you know, BUY GAMES.

That's the nice thing about owning every console except a PS3 and having a moderately capable PC.

I will overlook a console's lack of games, and possibly other features, if I feel that certain games on that particular console meet my expectations. High quality Nintendo games is something I've come to expect from Nintendo til the end of the milennium. Unfortunately, that same quality wasn't there with the GC, not to mention I felt Nintendo had some horrible, horrible ideas (IMO). Sure, there were far more third party games on there, but I've come to realize that I would just go to one of the other consoles for my multi-plat purchases. So what's left? Well, Nintendo first party games. And if those don't measure up to what I'm expecting, then what's the point?

Having said that, although I absolutely detest the Wii's atrocious hardware, and not really a fan of waggle, aside from aiming, Mario Galaxy is looking fucking amazing (and SSBB fuck you guys :maf ), and if it delivers, the Wii would probably be a better console in my eyes than the GC already. All the other third party goodness I can get on my future 360. So, whatever. I guess now the only issue would be, would I still think Wii would be worth the $250 purchase? Eh...probably not, but when Galaxy comes out...well, I don't have too much will power, so...

But yeah, that's just my $0.02. :-[

i'm pretty much in the same boat as the other wii owners on the board. metroid prime 3 gave me a glimmer of hope for the future of wii titles this winter, but i found myself playing bioshock and halo 3 more at the end of the day. "superior controls" had nothing to do with it. i'm banking on SMG as being the wii savior of the year. fuck super smash, that's just a title i don't care about whatsoever. but after SMG, it'll probably be on another 3 month dust collecting hiatus.
