Fuck the ACT. I didn't study and still passed it.

BTW if you're thinking of coming to Michigan for school, you only need to take the ACT; the SAT isn't required for any of the big schools in the state.

You better study well.  UT at Austin is a pretty good school.  Standards for state schools are often higher even for out-of-state Americans so they're likely even higher for foreigners.  But why would you want to go a state school?  The tuition for UT is probably the same as a private school since you're a foreigner.

Arvie is not a distinguished black fellow.  He has to do more than just pass.

Philosophy  :ninja... :'(

I doubt I will make Michigan so I might not even try.  I really want Austin.  Also I need to do well on the ACT to make up for my atrocious GPA.

Try Eastern Michigan lol. You'll get in no doubt

Concetrate on the verbal.  Schools tend to care a bit more about the Verbal section unless you're applying to something like Engineering.  And even the top engineering programs have very high verbal requirements.  Memorizing Princeton Review's Word Smart would help a lot.

Princeton's study guides suck.  get Barron's book.  Or the Collegeboard's book.  essentially you just have to take a bunch of practice tests so you know how to get in the groove of taking an SAT/ACT.

yeah, business is pretty bullshit.  I'd suggest a double major (2 similar majors that share like 60% of the credits) in something you like and get experience in a field you like.  And adjust your stomach to ramen, not coffee.

Accounting is the like the second best field to major in and get a job right out of school. Videogames/"Illustration"? Not so much. Every business needs an accountant, and they get payed very good money. It's a more stable field than finance

Arvie, you can get Word Smart as a book.  Amnintendo, my score on 1 section is probably higher than your total score, so STFU.

Don't be intimidated by people telling you Philo is a useless major.  You can easily go to Business or Law school with a Philo degreee.  It's not really necessary to do Business in undergrad if you want to get a MBA.

I don't want to go into Business or law though, just philosophy for the sake of philosophy - which I agree is quite useless.

Though if after 4 years I don't want to continue with philosophy I could do law.  Thats something to think about, thanks.

That's my point.  Philosophy doesn't have to be a dead-end.  There're even some med students that were Philosophy majors.  They just had to do the 2 yrs of pre-med requirements.

I'm saying the tests/lessons in that book suck for preparing him for the SAT.  Barron's tests are a lot harder and therefore better.

He shouldn't get a masters in philosophy but he should know that he may have to take a few classes.  He should take philosophy classes for G.E. credits if he wants to go to them.

Maths- more so than communications but less so than Civil Engineering. Also communications is more of a people person job anyway.

Anyway I stand by what I said- accounting is safe degree where you can relish in mediocrity with it for the rest of your life. Of course a few get further accreditation and move on.

No.  By doing Philo I need to get into the best school I can in order to have any type of job relating to my degree by the end of it.  I'm planning to get a Ph.D in the end so the best possible school is important.   I'm looking of this list, which is for philo graduate schools, so far.  http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/overall.asp

OK, here's a hint for ya... Grad schools don't usually give a fuck where you went for your undergrad unless it's like a top 5, maybe 10 university (Ivy League and stuff).

Work hard in undergrad, get a good GPA (nothing less than 3.75) and score well on the GRE and you just might make it into a decent grad program.

Unless you're talking about Med, Dental, or LAW, it's actually easier to get into a prestigious University as a grad student.  Actually, my friend at Havard Law told me it's statistically easier to get into Harvard's law school than its undergrad program.

statistically sure. I suppose the ratio of applications to acceptances for Harvard Law is higher than it is for their undergrad. But, the requirements are a total bitch.

Thats why I'm going to try applying to schools around the top.  Hopefully I can make one.

the point I was making was that you don't need to go to some pimp-ass university for undergrad (just a top 100) as long as you get good grades. Even if you get into a prestigious university you still need to get equally good grades.

my english teacher told me of this one female freshman she had that was straight out of high school who went to the counseling office to use the special computer to search for graduate schools.  rather than search based on her major or the the school's rank or something, she searched for the schools with the highest male to female ratios and she got a list of 10 engineering schools.  she applied to all of them as a business administration major (only one of them had a business administration program).  guess how many she got accepted to (yes they were good schools)?

oh, and she started off her application letter with "I can never have enough knowledge and whipped cream"

Also, why are you so stuck on going to a school in the US?  I mean, I can absolutely understand wanting to get the hell out of Saskatchewan (;)) but that doesn't mean you have to migrate south of the border.

He can't be White Man's sex butler and go to school in Canada at the same time.

Boogie, do you have any tips for healthy living?

My plan for this year is to cut way the fuck down on fried shit and pasta, switch from pop to water, and start working out.

I said I had an interest in going to school in the east.  I do really want to get out of Saskatchewan though.
You should go to the University of Manitoba Toronto.

I'd like too.

I need to do a year here though as I am in no condition to go out on my own yet.
Why?

Good ideas, especially the pop one.  I never drink pop anymore (except for alcohol mixing purposes, naturally).

Just try to do the little things when it comes to your diet, less snacking, that sort of thing.  Personally, I rarely eat out, as well.

For me, the most important part of getting in shape and getting healthy is making sure that you enjoy your exercise.  If you enjoy lifting weights and running, great, but for a lot of people, they'd get bored of that fast.  That's why martial arts is a great fit for me, because it's fun and interesting in addition to being great exercise.

So my best advice would be to get exercise that you will be able to maintain, by doing an activity or sport that you will be able to stick with.  And don't be discouraged if you don't see results in  just a couple weeks.  It takes time.

No money, most importantly.  Also bad grades and living habits.

No money, and yet you're trying to go to school in the US? Does not compute.

qft.  It's criminal what they are charging down there.  Canada provides an equivalent education for much less.  Plus you get an incredibly long summer.

Arvie, all of my most perverted offers still stand.  Just make sure you come with sweat pants that can easily be pulled down.  When I huff too much bleach, my belt unbuckling skill is the first to go.

PD, do you understand how community colleges work?  they accept anybody.  you don't need to apply 6 months before you enroll.  just register a month before, take placement tests, and then choose your classes.  and then you're a college student.

I don't know how student loans work in canada.  I assume it involves lots of marijuana.

I don't know how investing works in canada.  I think it involves giving ducks or swans to a bank?

You apply for governmental loans through your provincial government. The application process start at the end of April in Ontario. The max you can get in Ontario is about $10k a year. If that is not enough you have to try the banks. For the most part they don't seem to do loans but instead give you a credit line. Undergrad students don't get much and you need a co-signer. Law students on the other hand get a pretty nice credit line and we don't need a co-signer. (Yeah that means I'm blowing my money and buying me a Russian cheeseburger wife)

There's always risks when it comes to investing. People do lose money in the market. Especially if they foolishly decide that gold is a bad investment. Remember you do have to pay interests on those loans. And the interest on those bank loans is pretty ugly. I don't think you should take out a loan unless you'll actually use that money towards school or a nice blue eyed Russian cheeseburger.

They are traded to Hudson for canned goods and rifles.

Depends on the bank. All Canadian banks do accept Maple syrup, hockey cards, Canadian tire money, Molson empties, and Bryan Adams' albums.

Don't you plan on majoring in philosophy? If that's the case forget the loans. You'll never pay them back

Also bank loans are more than prime. Student loans are usually prime +1%.

We have plenty of community colleges in Canada--though we call them plain old colleges--and about half a dozen in and around Toronto alone. A quick search on google reveals that there are plenty of colleges in dumb-fuck Saskatchewan too.
