Title: The Wii.
Post by: Christopher on October 15, 2006, 01:09:01 AM
What is appealing about the Wii?

Why on earth would you get one at launch?  Is there anythin appealing about the launch at all?  A Gamecube port and a Ubi Soft game?

This could be said for the PS3 launch and the same was said at the 360 launch.

There's absolutely no point in buying the Wii at launch. I don't see anything that makes the system a must buy. Zelda looks amazing, but I'd most likely get the Gamecube version anyway; it's the definitive version, and the one built from the ground up.

Red Steel looks great, but I'm not buying the Wii just to play it. I'd much rather get a 360 with Gears of War

Looks like I'm only getting it for Zelda (maybe Wario Ware just for fun), and to retire the Cube really.  I modded my xbox to run EMUs off it when I got my x360, so the Virtual Console doesn't really interest me unless they're adding stuff to the games (multiplayer, achievements, graphical improvements, etc), although I may buy some VC stuff out of guilt.  I'd like to rent COD3 and Red Steel just to see how FPS controls are implemented (same I guess for Excite Truck), but I don't expect them to be worth purchasing.  I liked Trauma Center until it became all about Aliens or some shit--I dropped it after that, so I'm thinking it's another rental if even.

I guess there's no point buying an Xbox 360 for Halo 3 then if you've already got Halo 2 and the original Xbox. Also might as well save your pennies by picking up Splinter Cell on GBA.

Wii's line up is weak. I can get Zelda on GC (which I will do so happily), Mario Galaxy comes out in 2007, as does Sonic. Other than Trauma Center I can't really think of any games on Wii that scream "buy me!".

This is funny because the amount of support Wii has is insane.

The Wii will have a steller Christmas holiday, and then lose steam until Mario/SSB come out. Just watch.

Outside of Zelda, I don't see one must have game. The 360 should have a field day against the Wii and the PS3 for most of 2007

They shoulda just waited for a christmas launch then...but at least with crap games they MIGHT not have to worry about a shortage. I remember the N64 shortage way back when. It was a big deal in Washington back then since Nintendo was/is? in this area. My mom rocked christmas that year tho, she managed to find one and Mario 64. Ah nostalgia.

Then came the four years of crap games and my growing hate for Nintendo.

As for 360, its been a great upscaling dvdplayer/streaming video-music media center and xbox live is fantastic, but none of the games except say Dynasty Warriors Empires 5 which is on ps2 as well, has held me to the system.

Once you play N3 you'll figure out why. I can create a laundry list of solid gameplay mechanics employed by Empires to make it a superior Beat em Up experience.

N3 was just a fucking letdown.

I've been playing it for the past week (when Drinky Crow sent me his unwanted copy) and other then the boss battles I find it fun.  It's a super-dumb game but DW is a better series?

DW5 Empires a better game,  I didnt say the entire series was better than NNN. In fact DW didnt get 'good' until 3, and even then it didnt 'rock' till 5, and even then I like the Empire spinoffs better than the vanilla games.

I'll try DW5: Empires, I'm in the mood for another one of those types of games since I've been stuck on the last boss for inphyrr for three days.

I could never believe that they would put boss battles in a game like that.  Takes ten minutes unless you get killed.

Your prediction sounds about as reasonable as the one made by the guy who in the middle of the nineteenth century predicted that there would be no more inventions as everything had already been invented. GameCube sold terribly in Japan and the wii will sell a ton of units there. With basically the same hardware, the wii will top GameCube sales.

Which is sad. I'd like to see the Wii fail just so Nintendo could shut up about their faux innovation. $250 for a Gamecube 1.3? I think not

I don't have a problem with Nintendo coming out with a system that is underpowered, but not that underpowered. Honestly for $250 it should be no less than half as powerful as the PS3 and Xbox360. And why the hell do I care if the actual hardware is the size odf 3 DVD cases? It takes up shelf space either way.

I think the price for Wii just fine. It's obvious it's the tech in the controller that made it that expensive, as this is pretty relatively new tech.

The graphics do matter, but Dreamcast and up was the first time we actually got great playable 3d games that have good controls and graphics. It's the 16 bit generation for 3d. Also, psx games have more than just bad graphics. They also have terrible controls and gameplay, something that has since been fixed as technology has grown.

I'll be able to go back to MANY games from this era years from now while I probably won't do the same for psx, saturn, or n64 unless it was sprite based.

Correlating this gen to the psx era is not only silly, it's just ill founded and a bad comparison in general.

How can you argue against better resolution and actual antialiasing, for starters?  Power is important even if you're not busting against the technology walls with your graphics--I have a very hard time even looking at current-gen games nowadays, even pretty ones like Okami.

64 MB of RAM in the Wii is gonna hurt the potential for gameplay innovation more than it will the graphics.

Yeah, I echo most of the sentiments in this thread. The worst part is that Nintendo could have easily had more power if they just made the case bigger. The problem is Nintendo INTENTIONALLY made Wii as weak as possible, making sure to keep dev. costs down for EVERYONE. I can understand why, considering Nintendo's software sales on the GC were a great deal lower than previous generations, so they didn't want to keep eating higher costs for lower payoffs.

Course, doesn't mean I like what they're doing. Honestly, though, a  game like Mario is okay with Xbox level power, since you don't need to do much, and clever art can go a long way. HOWEVER, if anything, I was at least hoping the hardware would be strong enough to do a next gen. Zelda justice. Mario doesn't need Xbox/PS3 level power, but Zelda does. Don't really care about most other Nintendo franchises utilizing that power either.

Exactly. Nintendo seems to think that the Wii could only EITHER be as powerful/expensive as the PS3/360 OR slightly more powerful/weaker than the Xbox. They could have included shader support. They could have offered far more RAM. They could have made the system slightly bigger. But instead they chose to take the Gamecube, slap on waggle support, and sell it for $250.

I just wish they'd bumped the 64 MB GDDR3 RAM to 256 or 512 MB and eaten the cost. I'd have a much harder time bitching -- even with the DX7-grade graphics features -- if the system had enough to RAM to support for next-gen "epic" game mechanics and concepts.
