I've only played a little bit, since I want to finish Uncharted first, but I think it's pretty good so far (I'm at the part where you get the horse).  What's LOLworthy about it, besides the cross-eyed Ben Stiller lookalike main (present day) character?

I'm not finding it boring so far, but then again I've only played about an hour.  It's really pretty to look at, and once you get the hang of the controls they work very well, plus it doesn't suffer from the "How do we make this level....uh, challenging, I guess?  Let's throw a bunch of acrobatic pirates coming from all directions, stock them with endless grenades, and see how that plays out" syndrome that Uncharted suffers from.

uncharted is the lolgame of the month, by the by. ac does not merit hate except perhaps an eyebrow raised in contempt at their test planners.

Mass Effect is chock the fuck full of annoying technical and design shit. A LOT of people can overlook it cause the story is supposedly omg at the end and the visuals and VA ARE nice. I just happen to not be one of those people.

mass effect is a polarizing game. read the qt3 discussions on it -- there's smart folks who abhor it beyond words and smart folks who adore it beyond words. even in my first hour, i could see that having a balanced opinion on it was gonna be tough -- the music, dialogue, and especially the visuals/art are fuckface wow holy shit amazing, but the interface is crapped out by satan's own design group. your enjoyment will depend on how much your sense of immersion due to the brilliant execution of the former overwhelms the argh augh wtf of the latter. it has a plot i really want to dig into, but first i have to psyche myself up to discover and overcome all the inanities of the interface and party ai.

I assassinated another guy before I headed out to work today, it was awesome. I kinda wish I got my perfect stealth kill on one of the first guys cause its almost impossible with some of the later situations. I want that achievement :(

Once you get past like the 5th assassination your combat options are so fun.

I like AC, Genghis Cohen.  It has its share of flaws, but the game is unique, and the setting is fresh.

Well, the setting SHOULDN'T be fresh, but it is.  The crusades are such a ripe time for gaming that I find it kind of difficult to believe that aside from the Total War games, this is actually one of the first major games to seriously tackle that time period.

Anyway, the gameplay is more than competent, the controls are novel, the story is pretty cool, and the setting is as tight as an infant's pussy.  The negatives are that the game is as buggy as fuck, and the gameplay's progression, while certainly not bad, isn't as great as the other elements present in the game.

I personally think it's a great game, and the only way the flaws really become flaws is if you focus on finding and exploring them, as you do when you go through a game quickly, and ever little issue becomes a humungadunga.  This isn't a patient gamer's game or anything, but if you like to focus on flaws too much, in spite of pretty great things all around the board, it's probably not a game for you.

There have been few better games released this year.  You can quote me on that, throw it in my face, whatever.  I know I'm right.  FUCK SHITTY 1UP.

The funny thing about AC hate from reviewers: they complain about AC being repetitve when Mass Effect is probably more repetitive.

Repetition is a part of gaming.

I didn't feel like doing anything in the game, and there wasn't any reason for me to continue beyond getting a taste of what the game had to offer.

I love the period, so I love the game.  It is totally awesome.  It is like being in Kingdom of Heaven!

Are you familiar with the period in history?  As my Shostakovich blog post shows, I really hate the whole mentality of saying you need to do research about something before you can appreciate a work of art based on it, but in the case of KoH it certainly helps.  It also helps that the period of history was incredibly interesting in many regards.  The dark ages were fantastic.  Being a human was basically like being an animal.  Everyone was uneducated.  Lifespans were short, and death for most common people was always right around the corner.  And then some Important People got bored and decided Crusades would be a good idea, and things got WORSE.

Yeah, maybe if I did a bit of research before rewatching it I would enjoy it. I studied it in world history class like 15 years ago but I've never been anything close to an aficionado.

part of the problem is that I hate all groups involved in the Crusades equally. there's no good guys and bad guys, there's just awful guys and fucking worse guys. because of that I've never been able to get into the period because it's just such a cesspit of human horribleness.

That's what makes it so great!

I mean, in real life, even today, there are never good guys and bad guys, just different perspectives.  The Crusades are a great period to learn and explore this, since these very disparate groups and people were regularly interacting.  And everyone was stone distinguished mentally-challenged, and thought they were the only party that was right.  Sure, some people were more "right" than others, but the whole thing was just a mess.

Edward Norton's character in KoH, while a bit romanticized, was pretty much a good guy that understood the perspective of the "enemy" more than others.  And he wasn't the only one, either.  It's just that history was written by the religious, so the dumbasses tend to be remembered more than the people that really knew what was going on.  There were people that were mostly good in the Crusades.  Heck, even Salah al-Din wasn't a bad guy in the light of the Crusades.  He was just trying to defend and alternately take back the things that had unjustly been taken from his group.  Even the Assassins, the historical Assassins, not the AC fictionalized ones, had good goals at heart.  It's the methodology that was wrong.

It doesn't do the period justice to think of it in terms of good and bad, bad or worse, or good or evil.  Everyone had generally understandable motives at heart.  People were just pretty dumb back then, and religion was the guiding light.  As history has shown, religion is a VERY POOR guiding light.

The crusades are like this awesome study in all sorts of relativism.  With a passing knowledge, you might think that everyone was bad, and everyone during the crusades certainly thought that everyone that wasn't them was bad, but it wasn't like that at all.  It was all relativism, misunderstanding, and making the streets of Jerusalem run ankle deep with blood (it actually happened!).

I'd suggest going to Wikipedia and reading their article about the Crusades.  The Crusades encompass everything from the Crusades themselves, to banking and economics, to military history, to Templar wackiness, to the effect on European history, to the situation in the Middle East today.  And then some.  I'm not sure there's a good or great one book overview out there, and if there is, it's probably written at a academic historical level.

I'd suggest reading the article on Wikipedia, following a few links, finding out what you like, what strikes you, and starting from there.  I can give you some starting points once I know what you find most interesting.  Most people like the Templar story.  It will give you a new appreciation for the third Indiana Jones movie, and everything that references Templars.

An important thing to keep in mind, and this is especially true regarding the Templar story, is that we really don't know the whole truth.  People were generally illiterate for 4 centuries after the main Crusades, so history was written by mostly biased folks.  Reading about the Crusades requires the ability to read between the lines and draw info from many sources.  The Church is largely responsible for both keeping people illiterate (it's how they became the most powerful force in western history) and writing the history of the Crusades.  This should be a BIG CLUE in pointing out how terrible a force Christianity has been in Western history.  They not only started this Whole Mess, but they've done a pretty damned good job of making themselves look like a Light in history.

Also, a lot of tin foil hat types cling to the Templar story.  I suggest reading Foucault's Pendulum and the Illuminatus Trilogy, novels, to derive the most fun from the cnspiracy theories.  Those books say all that needs to be said about the conspiracy theories.  They theories are fun to read, but I generally think it's a waste to spend that much time thinking about them.  At some point, paying lip service, even in fun, to the conspiracy nutters just feels like a waste.
