Um..... I think you are missing a small (yeah right) point about the Nintento
Games... THERE FUN!!!! Gee, now isn't that a novel concept, a bunch of video
games that are fun to play.  In my house we have Sega Master System, Genesis
and NES.  Take a guess which gets played the most? Come on guess. Give up?
The NES.  Why becaue it has such FUN games as Zelda, Link, Metroid, SMB2, Metal
Gear, Fester's Quest, Double Dragon, et. al.  The only thing my brothers (who
are 9 and 13) use the Genesis for (Sega Master system now sits in a closet.)
is Sports games.  That's because good sports games look better on a system with
awesome graphics.  My brothers still play sports games on NES too.  The NES has
something that the ATARI 2600 used to beat the superior Intellivision:
playabilty.  I can still give you a list of ATARI 2600 games that I would not
mind playing today, most of them were made by Activision, but there are still
some atari classics.  To make a long story short (Too late :-) great hardware
does not a great system make.  This is both true for PC's and Video Gaming
systems.  I still prefer PC's over Macs, and NES over Genesis.  As a closeing
note

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WILL BUY!!; NOT WHAT YOU THINK THEY WILL LIKE!!!!!!!

Drinky, were you still there when Omarichu was posting?  That guy did a better job of pissing people off than any of the trolls today.  Also, Marty Chinn's name was mentioned in disdain long after he was gone.  It was funny to see Marty at GAF behaving in exactly the same manner as he was described on Usenet.

Did Drinky post on Usenet?  I was a very frequent Usenet poster from 1996 to 2000.  I knew a bunch of people who migrated to other forums later on: Darien Allen, Omarichu, Marty Chinn, Joe Ottoson, Charles Doane, Charles Miller, Jr., Tsubaki, etc., etc.

I hung out at rec.games.video.sega and rec.games.video.sony, mostly.

1989?  WTF.  I don't think I really understood what the hell a modem was back then, let alone usenet.  In 1989 it had to have been like when Alexander Bell just invented the telephone and there were only 12 people that owned one.  The fact that this guy actually found another person to discuss videogames back then is impressive.

I used to post on Fidonet (90-94) .. which was essentially a collection of BBS's that would swap messages back and forth. I don't think anyone had the foresight to archive all of those messages .. I would love to go back and look through them.

I recognize most of those names.  Remember the Mario Monks and Nobody's Perfect?     :lol  I asked DarienA on GAF several times over a 5 year period if he was the same guy from Usenet, and he'd NEVER reply.  It was weird.  He finally did last year in a usenet thread on GAF.   :lol

I posted on the rec.games.video forums and a little on alt.games.sf2 from the end of 1994 to around sometime in 2000.  Usually under variations of "light edge," "lite edge," "lyte edge," or my real name.

---

I found the thread from last year!

Quote
Ha ha ha...Terrrybear.  I remember him, and also other infamous posters like Ms. PSX, The Mario Monks, Nobody's Perfect, and more.  There were those constant Buyrite games scams that got some entertaining responses after their reputation became well-know, as I recall.

I searched for myself the google newsgroup search, and found some old reviews I wrote back in my high school and college days.  Good times, bad grammar.  :)

Pocket Fighter PSX Review (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/alt.games.sf2/browse_thread/thread/c93fd37cb4952e6a/f52e93a030ea1520?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman+review&rnum=17&hl=en#f52e93a030ea1520")  Good lord, talk about massively overrating a game!  :lol

Japanese Metal Gear Solid review (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.video.sony/browse_thread/thread/c89582e29b22af62/0abd200db09e8bf2?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman+review&rnum=15&hl=en#0abd200db09e8bf2")

Vampire Savior Saturn review. (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/alt.games.sf2/browse_thread/thread/774e30967a112ab4/06d434b67e8eac59?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman&rnum=38&hl=en#06d434b67e8eac59")  I still view this as one of the best fighting games ever made.  Loved the hell out of it.

X-Men Vs. SF Saturn review.  (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/alt.games.sf2/browse_thread/thread/1d49ffa62b69f090/7b6f2ca59df5706c?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman+review&rnum=5&hl=en#7b6f2ca59df5706c") The comments after are pretty fun to read now.  :)

Garou MOTW Neo-Geo review (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/alt.games.sf2/browse_thread/thread/3288984f2022418a/77f22ed7e9c197e1?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman&rnum=35&hl=en#77f22ed7e9c197e1"), which I posted in Neo-Geo mailing lists and I think on a forum or two, but decided to also try in it alt.games.sf2...no responses.  :lol

Super Galdelic Hour PS2 review. (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.video.sony/browse_thread/thread/8e0af709f88117fc/38a425e93f2b146c?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman&rnum=12&hl=en#38a425e93f2b146c")

And there's also the old infamous Silpheed TLP thread (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.video.sony/browse_thread/thread/a6e22174bd04fe77/88cbf742054b5b22?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman+silpheed&rnum=1&hl=en#88cbf742054b5b22"), where I said the game sucked, didn't post for a few days, and was declared a troll "full of hot air" by Mr. Ireland himself, as well as a few WD-asskissers, which was amusing, since me saying that the CAPCOM-published game (in Japan) sucked had absolutely nothing to do with WD.  More good times!

Also: Kenji Eno of Warp sez: "PS2 CANNOT HANDLE D2 AND SHEN MUE." (http://"http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.video.sony/browse_thread/thread/5dd8505e4e85da9f/b7a2b3184adaae03?lnk=st&q=lee+freedman&rnum=8&hl=en#b7a2b3184adaae03")

I remember the Mario Monks.  Holy Jesus...annoying as fuck.  That's why I NEVER posted in rec.games.video.nintendo.

I also remember Nobody's Perfect.  Do you remember some wacky Japanese (or maybe not!) guy named Takeo Shimizu?  He was pretty fucking insane.  He was a big Sega fanboy.  Looking back, he was probably a joke character.  Raymond McKeithen II, remember him?  Man, I wonder what he's up to.  He was really into the Sega Saturn import scene. Charles Doane was fucking INSANE.  He was like the direct precursor of people like Synbios and G.  Lucan Duran was also a regular on RGVS, he made an account here but he's never posted, I think he's turned off by the anti-japafag vibe that sometimes surrounds the gaming forum.

I also hung out with some Usenet folks online: Yanachan, TerraEpon, and Moonprince (AKA Tsubaki) were on IRC quite a bit.  Cool guys, all of them.  John Hokanson, Jr. was also on IRC once in a while, he was a huge Sega fanboy who got into some online scraps with Victor Ireland.  Remember how often Victor Ireland (Working Designs prez) posted on the RGVS forums?  He was there daily and actually sold a lot of old game stuff via Usenet, not like he is on GAF nowadays.

I actually got my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga from Joe Ottoson for $35.  I actually got a bunch of games from people I met on RGVS...Astra Superstars, Vampire Savior, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter....and some old SFC games as well.

I actually OWN Super Galdelic Hour now - I found it my first year in Japan selling for like 200 yen, and I couldn't resist. :lol

Do you remember the Zach Meston megaton posts?  I think he may have gotten into legal trouble for those, he broke an NDA to talk tons of shit about Victor Ireland and Working Designs.

Nick Rox also posted there, I think.  He was the object of much derision.

Joshua Kaufman/TerraEpon is in one of the threads, hahahaha.  OH man, he was fun.  He went completely insane at one point, I remember.  Had some sort of nervous breakdown.  He was like PD when it came to wanting to have sex. :lol

c.s.i.p.g.* was the best place for PC gaming discussion for a very, very long time. Especially if you weren't a super FPS gearhead (those discussions migrated to the web sooner than those for other genres).

Raymond McKeithen started up a forum on ezboard called "Enlightened Console Gaming." I can't remember if I ever did anything but lurk, but I do remember seeing Lucan Duran, Alan Kwan, and Tsubaki there. It was a pretty slow place, and I think it eventually died (I can't find it anymore). Those guys got me into Suchie Pai. (Should I be admitting that?)

Oh, it's still there! http://p196.ezboard.com/Enlightened-Console-Gaming/benlightenedconsolegaming

But there's been no new posts since '05.

I read a lot of rgvs back then, but I was strictly a lurker.  Omarichu even got me a bit riled up back then.

Nobody's Perfect is Deadmeat/DeadmeatGA... so yeah, nothing changed at all, every day Deadmeat still starts about ten purposedly misleading threads that spell Sony's doom

except that he now denies any link to the Nobody's Perfect persona and deems the Saturn to have a shit design

DarienA left a little after I started reading Usenet.  He was just as hypersensitive about Sony criticism back then.  Just as pompous too.

It's been awhile but wasn't Doane some extreme conservatist? I remembered him having even more and longer e-beefs than St. C.   He wasn't like Synbios or G at all.  In fact, he was like the exact opposite because he was scarily serious.

What happen to Ottoson?  I remembe him too and he reminds me of several people on GAF.  People started to hate him after the collapse of Sega because he just started bashing on Xbox fans, old Sega fans, and even Sony fans who criticized Sega.  It was like he just hated everything.  He also talked down to all fighting fans like they were noob.

This was me:

Quote
I can just see it now...Bernie's in his Superman costume, pretending to fly, when his secretary comes into his office...

Secretary: Sir, a representative from Sega of Japan is here to see you...

Bernie: Whooosh! Zooom! Ah, what an unexpected surprise...give him a Batman cape and let him in!

SOJ Rep: Hello, Mr. Stolar.

B: Put on your cape, man! Your cape!

SOJ: Uh, all right...

B: Now, then, old friend. What did you want to talk to me about? Is there a menace in Gotham City?

SOJ: Uh, no, er...'Superman.'

B: It's not like you to pay social visits, Batman.

SOJ: Well, 'Superman', I'm here on behalf of Sega Enterprises, I've been assigned to relieve you of your position.

B: What?

SOJ: Yes, that's right, take Krypto and get the hell out of here.

B: Why, you cad! You must be under the control of some criminal mastermind!

SOJ takes off cap.

SOJ: Bernie, get the hell out of here...

B: You mean, you're SERIOUS!?!?!? But, I was having so much fun running Sega!

SOJ: That's nice, Bernie. But I think it's time we took you back to the retirement home and gave you your medication.

B: But I don't like that place! The people there are mean and they don't let me watch TV!

SOJ: Well, we'll give you your own TV, how's that?

B: Really? That's great! Okay, let's go!

Bernie had done a photo shoot with Next Generation magazine dressed up as Superman, that's where this comes from.

Yeah, Charles Doane was pretty scary...but I didn't take him seriously back then.  He lived in the middle of the desert in Arizona and basically hated everything that was non-video game related.  He was obsessed with Sailor Moon and Hello Kitty.  He had been in the military and often hinted that he and a group of other guys had killed somebody because they suspected he was gay.

It was sort of like GAF except back during the Saturn/DC era. It was very popular and I remember it went crazy right up to the DC launch. The guy that owned it was a dick and hardly ever around. Much like GAF it went to shit after awhile (around 2002 I think) and eventually got shut down, along with the Nintendo board. It was my first mssg board I ever really was into.

synbios used to post there under the alias DCWiz.

You got a 360?  Wow, some things do change after all.

I thought the 360 was much better positioned than the Xbox was. Never really had anything against MS. Only system I haven't gotten around to this time is the Wii. (No real reason on that front. Maybe if another F Zero appears...)

Like scrubby scrubs who are scrubs would ever understand anything I said on the subject. ;)

Seriously though, I've mellowed on that front as well. (Too time intensive to get great at a fighter) GT's Marredjin if anyone wants to take me on.

Eh. Hard to really jump onboard just for that when the only 360 fighter was DOA4, with no real hint that VF etc would eventually follow. Add to that I'm not a FPS fan, and Live didn't offer me any huge incentive though it was a bonus. When I got the 360, the Wii had just been announced, and the PS3 was being presented as overly high end, so I thought that 360 split the difference and best fit the traditional gaming niche this time around.

My PS3's been getting the short shrift. It's mainly been running BR's lately.

Do you remember The Charles Doane Hate Page?  Had MP3s using voice samples of his, animated gifs, and select quotes of him saying insane things like how he walked around with his gun and showed it off to bums if they looked like they were going to panhandle him.

The creepy thing about Doane is, I was doing a search and I found a conversation between me and him on Usenet and he was talking about how he loved Hello Kitty, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Sailor Moon...but he was also (according to him) ex-military and basically had an arsenal of weaponry in his home.

I'm sure if he died, he went out in a hail of bullets.

There was a Nick Rox hate page too.  People in Usenet were so extreme. :lol

EDIT: Doane is still alive, at least as of mid-2007.  I just did a Google search with his name and Arizona (as that's where he lived) and found his Amazon wish list.

Ichirou, wasn't the Nick Rox hate page called "Monkey-Boy Rox" or something like that?  With a bunch of stuff that they did to piss off Victor Ireland and was supposed to be confidential, but Ireland revealed to everyone anyway?

Shit, Rox is on GAF...we ought to get him to come here.

YES!  It was filled with tons and tons of info, including e-mail exchanges and Usenet posts from Nick Rox that proved he hadn't played and finished the Japanese version of Lunar 2 (which he'd claimed he had, and given that as the reason why he didn't need to finish the US version before reviewing it).  It also included the infamous "blue shadows" review and a bunch of quotes from different 2D game reviews where he pulled percentages out of his ass...

"X-Men: Children of the Atom is missing at least 50% of its frames!"

"Vampire Hunter is missing 33% of its frames!"

...and other ridiculous stuff like that. :lol

I still found his reviews fun, though.  It's thanks to him that I actually bought Snatcher.

the "snatcher" i played on the sega cd was a third-rate pictoral text adventure with some of the worst shooting sequences ever put to media. the story itself was a distinguished mentally-challenged animu take on blade runner, and about as engrossing or interesting as one would expect a cyberpunk fanfic to be -- i.e. not at all. what music there was wasn't bad, though. if you like it is because YOU ARE AN ANIME cigarillo -- ultimately, it is both an awful game and an awful story, conflated together as PURE ANIMU AWFUL.

The shooting was dumb, yes.  But it was an enjoyable graphic adventure.  AND at the time there weren't any other "anime" (there's nothing "animu" about it other than the art style, which itself is old-school 80s style anyway) games even like it out in the U.S.  I liked all the Blade Runner (and Terminator, kinda) references.  Fun fucking game.  Shut up and go play Unlimited Saga or your animu-loli PSU expansion or something.   :-*

Oh wow, some Blast City refugees! I used to post there as "Soul Reaver" from the Dreamcast launch up until the time the site went under. I also posted on Tendo City (the Nintendo offshoot, which actually still exists as a distantly related ancestor of that original forum) and Shock City (the short-lived Sony offshoot).  Man, Imashroom, that guy was crazy. Sometimes he just seemed a cool guy, but then everyone once in a while he would go into condescending old-man rant mode. I remember one time he ripped into me for saying that Mississippi should be allowed to keep their "Stars and Bars" state flag because it stands for more than just slavery to a lot of people. Also another time on some religious topic. I think that was the time that I starting thinking "WTF is this old-man doing arguing online with a bunch of kids?"  :lol

Also, DCwiz.  :lol :lol OMG, when he finally actually posted pictures of himself actually playing with feet, I thought the entire forum was just going to die right then and there. :lol :lol Eventually he got banned anyway for being a moron though. I remember him and Imashroom getting into it several times, Imashroom hated him.

Who was that one chick that posted on the forum? Anastasia or something like that? The entire forum went nuts over here for a a while there. She had a ton of groupies/internet boyfriends. I remember there being multiple meltdowns concerning her. I think RoboEggman or whatever his name was was involved in at least one of them, or maybe that was an unrelated meltdown, but I'm pretty sure that he did in fact meltdown at some point. Ana or whoever made her own forum after Blast City went down. I went there once hoping to some Blast City-esque action, but instead I found the most sickifyingly sycophantic thing I've ever seen in my life. It was disgusting, it wasn't a forum so much as it was a place for various internet nerds to vie for her affections. That was probably the last I saw of any of the old Blast City gang, I wasn't sure where any of them went after that.

That's about all I remember from that site. It was my first internet forum, and it was good times. I wonder if Icy-9 is still running his Virtua Fighter forum.

I wish I could take credit, but IIRC, I lent out my copy of PDS to someone along with HotD and that was the last I saw of either. (Still have HotD's empty box as a reminder...) Sure you aren't thinking of D&D Collection? I think that and Princess Crown were the main notable Saturn games I sold on Usenet. The $35 does sound like me though. I was anti speculator, and usually tried to price things reasonably to spite the dudes who sat about with unopened games etc.

It was the gorgeous 2D that fooled people.  A lot of us Saturn fans were 2D whores since that's the one thing the Saturn did better than every other console.  I will admit, my memories of Princess Crown were very rose-colored until I played Odin Sphere and realized how mediocre it was other than its pretty graphics.
