The objective in Days of Ruin is for the player to defeat the enemy army with their own army. Except in certain single player missions with special objectives, there are two ways to defeat an opponent: destroy all of the enemy's units or capture their headquarters. The battle system is turn-based. Two to four armies, each headed by a commanding officer (CO), take turns building and commanding units on grid-based maps. Every turn, units, which consist of ground, sea and air units, can move across the different types of terrain and attack enemy units or perform other actions, such as submerging a submarine or resupplying friendly units. Fog of War, a phenomenon that prevents players from seeing enemy units other than those in the visual range of their units, various weather conditions (which change the terrain effects of the entire map), CO powers, and many other factors affect each battle.
The plot of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is considerably darker than the previous games in the series, and is unrelated to the previous series installments in terms of the storyline. Almost 90% of mankind has been killed off following a devastating meteor strike which has destroyed much of civilization and caused a massive dust cloud to blot out the sun. Scattered survivors pick through the wreckage, and the remnants of several military superpowers patrol the ravaged landscape, some factions protecting the innocent while the others prey upon them.[10]
The two rival world superpowers, Rubinelle and Lazuria, continue to fight among the ruins of their countries, the few surviving military leaders of each side carrying on the conflict begun before the catastrophe. In their wake, various warlords rise to power, seizing scarce food rations from the defenseless survivors and attempting to assert their dominance in the absence of law and order. Early on, the Rubinelle COs Will, Brenner, and Lin embark on a mission to rescue as many of the survivors as possible, with the help of the mysterious Isabella, an amnesiac girl who seems to know vital military secrets, and various other sympathetic factions.
In a departure from the previous games, which included five factions, Days of Ruin will only feature four: Rubinelle (Red), Lazuria (Blue), Yellow, and Black. The conflict between Rubinelle and Lazuria will play a prominent role in the early campaign missions, with the Yellow and Black factions being introduced later on.
Unit prices have been readjusted and several units renamed, as well as new ones introduced. Units can now level up in battle, increasing their capabilities. Units increase their level once for each enemy unit that they destroy. The level of each unit is identified as I, II, or Ace, with Ace being the highest level. While units with higher levels are more powerful than new units, they can still be defeated. Unit experience is not persistent, and the player begins each mission with new units.
New properties have also been introduced, including temporary properties that can be constructed by the Mobile Workshop unit. These properties, such as the Temporary Port, can only be used as stationary resupply bases, but also provide some defensive cover for units. As their name implies, temporary properties last for only a short time on the battlefield before they are removed.
The entire cast of the previous games has been replaced with new characters. CO powers have been toned down, and no longer have the ability to instantly change the course of a battle. Tag powers, which allowed players to move twice in one turn, have been removed, emphasizing that tactics will be much more essential. Players will gain CO powers much later in the campaign than before, and they will have a much less significant role in overall gameplay. COs can ride with a specific unit, and automatically promote that unit to Ace level. If that unit is destroyed, the CO returns to the HQ, where they can be redeployed with another unit. CO powers can only be used when the CO is with a unit, and affect the entire battlefield. For each battle that the CO-equipped unit experiences, the CO's power meter fills slightly. When the meter is full, the CO can activate his power, which has various effects on allied or enemy units, such as refueling allied units or reducing the range of enemy units. Similar to CO powers, CO effects also influence combat on the battlefield. As the CO power gauge is filled, your CO's area of influence, or CO zone, grows larger. These effects generally provide minor advantages such as firepower boosts to a CO's units; the difference between CO powers and effects is that CO effects are constant and only benefit units within the CO zone.
Rubinelle
Will
Will (Ed in the European version) is the main protagonist of Days of Ruin. He is introduced at the beginning of the game as a young cadet from the Rubinelle Military Academy. During the catastrophic meteor strike that devastates the world in Days of Ruin, Will is trapped in the Academy's mess hall. He survives on meager rations while he digs a way out of the mess hall, and meets Rubinelle COs Brenner and Lin after they defeat a roving band of outlaws led by The Beast. Will joins Brenner in his mission to rescue as many of the survivors as possible, setting the stage for the Days of Ruin Campaign plot. His CO power increases his ground unit's mobility.
Brenner
The leader of the remnant of Rubinelle's army, Brenner (O'Brian in the European version, Brown in the Japanese version) only wants to rescue the survivors of the meteor strike, but the rival army of Lazuria and several rising warlords will force him to lead his troops into battle many times in the future ahead. His CO power heals all his units.
Lin
A 1st Lieutenant in the Rubinelle Army, Lin (Ling in the European version) is also Brenner's second-in-command. Her CO power extends her units' vision by 2 spaces.
Isabella
Isabella is a mysterious young woman rescued by Will early in the plot. She is afflicted with amnesia, but seems to somehow be aware of vital military secrets. Her CO power increases her ranged units' mobility and attack range.
Lazuria
Tasha
Tasha is a Lazurian commander who still retains some of the hatred for Rubinelle from before when the meteors hit, seeing them as them 'killers'.
Yellow Faction
Grayfield
Acquainted with Brenner, Grayfield is a cold commander not limited by ideologies.
Waylon
Waylon is a CO that eventually becomes an ally of Rubinelle. He is referred to as a 'flyboy'.
Black Faction
The Beast
Always referring to himself as "The Beast", this CO leads a small group of outlaws seeking to take advantage of the downfall of the two main world superpowers, Rubinelle and Lazuria. He is encountered as the enemy in one of the early missions of the game.
Advance Wars is easy for the first few levels, then they just kick you on your ass and don't stop

Take yer bitchin to a thread fit for that kind of stuff. May I suggest a jappa RPG thread, or how about Uncharted
DAY 1 :bow
I stopped playing these when I realized they're more of a puzzle game with an optimal solution than an actual strategy game. If they didn't have the ranking thing an optimal paths I might be more interested.
I don't know why I can't get my DS online. My Wii works perfectly online. Hopefully I'll find a way by the time this game comes out.
ds only supports up to wep encryption, your router is probably using wpa instead which is far more secure
but to use a ds online you will have to temporarily change to wep or nothing
I suggest temporarily because wep encryption can be cracked in minutes and some douche could leech your internet connection if they are close enough

Will that solve my problems? I need to prove to Father Mike that a Canadian has no chance against an American on the battlefield.

Hows that Iraq thing going?, American :gun
it's going very long, and boring, like the average Advance War level

I guess getting your ass kicked over and over would be boring. But for people like me and Beezy, intelligent people that is, its great fun.
Stupid.
Hows that Iraq thing going?, American :gun
So wrong. :lol
Should this be my first AW game? Or should I pick up Dual Strike to get acquainted with the series? The game doesn't have a steep learning curve, does it?

nah, the series hasnt progressed much since the first. black hole rising introduced a mega tank, AWDS introduced a mega mega tank, and days of ruin has a mega mega mega tank now
just pick up the latest and skip the hassle

Hypothetically, how would someone do such a thing? :angel
anyone know the Japan release date?
....my internet didn't come with google
Hmm with all the changes they are making hopefully the series starts to have more of an emphasis on percise strategy and less "flood the map with units" levels.
In this new world, a different breed of Commanding Officer emerges. Gone are series mainstays Max, Nell, Andy, Grit, Drake - all of them lost in the apocalypse. Instead of falling back on battle-changing Super CO Powers, this new generation of Commanding Officer must rely on pure military strategy and guile to overcome rogue enemies who have nothing left to lose.

THATS AWESOME!
oooh better pick this up, I'll hit play-asia soonnot that i know of but there is a game rip.

Quite possibly. I guess I'll post my FC when I boot it up.
I hate online, fuck nintendo. thankfully I suck at advance wars and will not notice the lack of a war room lulz
So I just got online for the first time, and the online map sharing/downloading is COMPLETELY ghetto.
You can't browse maps!
If you select "Random Maps" it sends an uploaded map down to your DS at random, in the save slot you selected.
If you select "reccommended maps," you then select a save slot and it's the same thing - the game just sends you a map that you don't get to see, before it's downloaded.
After the 1 map is downloaded, the game disconnects you from WiFi and boots you to the main WiFi menu, so you can only download maps one at a time, without seeing what map you're getting in advance...
Another big problem with this game:
Very very unbalanced Vs. maps are included in the randomized WiFi map pool.
What in the world were you thinking, IntSys? Swan Cove is coming up for worldwide 1v1 matches. On that map player 2 starts with ALL his cities already capped, while player 1 doesn't!
The map is symmetrical, but Player 2 starts with NINE more cities than player 1.
That's a nearly insurmountable disadvantage, for even a very good player.
It reeks of sloppiness. WiFi matches where the game picks the map for you should only pull from a balanced set of maps.
so whats the deal with this Professor Layton game
it is WAY too much more of the same after three games of the same
SOMEONE PLAY ME ZOMG ONLINE
I'm thinking about picking this up this week. It's either this or No More Heroes, but I'm thinking about just renting NMH since I'd probably finish it in one sitting. To this day, I still have not finished any of the Advance Wars games. I just started playing AW:DS a bit ago and checked my playtime to laugh at a measly 1 hours total. Why do I even bother buying games if I'm not going to play them...
My girlfriend was playing her own campaign and she saved over mine with like 32 missions completed and 15+ S ranks LOL

I thought you said it was A++ :maf
:maf I'm bipolar. :)
The problems I really have with the game didn't become apparent until later on in the campaign. The "Fresh" graphics and music started to lose their appeal, the CO's don't really have much of an impact at all in battle which makes your playstyle largely samey regardless of who you use, I don't like that 450 pts is basically unattainable, and only having 12 COs in post-game really makes it dull to me.
B--
I wish they would've put an extra 6 months into development.
