Title: What are the movies you're going make sure your children watch?
Post by: Rman on January 18, 2008, 06:26:01 PM
For me it will probably be The Neverending Story, The Princess Bride, most of the Disney animated features especially starting from The Little Mermaid all the way through Lion King, arguably Disney Animation Studios best era.  Pixar's input, with the exception of Cars has also been stellar. E.T. and Star Wars (original trilogy) will also be on that list.  Sounds cliche, but that's what I could think of at the moment.

What movies do you want to share with your future offspring?

Oh, and my parents didn't really make sure I watched any particular movies. I found out Darth Vader was Luke's father from The Simpsons when I was like 8 or 9.

What a horrible childhood you must have had.

It's not so much about forcing your children to watch but sharing the movies with them.

Yea well, my parents didn't really share any with me lol

Or maybe I just can't remember.

I do remember seeing Jurassic Park in theaters with them, though.

Die Hard, Terminator 2, Commando, Predator, Aliens

My stepfather introduced me to action films at a young age.  He didn't care about ratings or anything like that.  So we saw everything.  He was a big movie collector and had a huge VHS library.  Ironically, he didn't let us watch Eddie Murphy's Boomerang, due to the gay character in the beginning and the double entendre he made about oral sex.  I must of watched T2 over 20 times.  I loved that movie.

I didn't think you were joking.  By today's standards of acceptable violence those movies are pretty tame.  Profanity may be an issue, but aren't they going to hear those words eventually in school like everyone else.

Make sure you take them to sunday school at the same time TVC, and tell them that El Topo is basically a visual bible.

I want to see Santa Sangre.  It sounds awesome from descriptions; the sort of movie every little kid should see.  I can fool the kid into thinking it is about Santa Claus, and then. . .

Quote
As deeply troubled Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky) is enslaved by his armless mother and forced into a murderous existence following his release from a sanitarium, Jodorowsky instills his protagonist with a desperate sense of fear and helplessness from which there seems little chance of escape. An alternately brutal, hallucinatory, and beautiful film, Santa Sangre is without question a polarizing effort by its very nature, though viewers willing to be seduced by Jodorowsky's alluring cinematic nightmare will find themselves surprised, enthralled, and richly rewarded with an uniquely unapologetic film that's not easily shaken off.

Quote
A  young man is confined in a mental hospital. Through a flashback we see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre ("Holy Blood"), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, he escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother. Against his will, he "becomes her arms" and the two undertake a grisly campaign of murder and revenge.

It sounds awesome and I am sure it will be worth watching for the visuals alone .

:bow Jodorowsky, that crazy bastard.  I would so let him traumatize my butthole.  And my kid's butthole.

Yeah,Simpsons and some other cartoons kinda ruined some movies for me.I must have heard "Hasta la vista baby" 20 times before I even heard of Terminator.

Some parents honestly don't care about stuff like that.  I remember I had a friend whose parent were all paranoid about stuff like that.  His dad also had a huge collection of movies and when we would ask to watch one of the rated r movies he'd say, "Not now, buddy.  Maybe when you're older.''

Scarface? Eh if I have kids I'm not renting it, ever. I'll let them see Godfather first. I'm tired of that stereotype

Sad story: A couple days ago Pizza Hut had this deal where EMU students got free pizza. So I was sitting at a booth with some other black guys, and there was this small TV near us that was playing The Godfather - which is like my third favorite film of all time. So me and my brother are watching it, and the three other black guys are too. I sat down right at the part where Appolonia is killed by the car bomb. But as you know, the "action" scenes in Godfather are separated by lots of dialogue/plot scenes

*5 minutes later*
Black guy #1: nicca this is BORING
Black guy #3: It's either this or...*looks at the other VHS tapes on the TV table* Lion King.
Black guy #2: Ayo man it's aight, stop hatin
Black guy #1: I'm not hatin but come on. This ain't no mob movie. Scarface is better
Black guy #2: co-sign
Black guy #3: No shit, this aight but my nicca Pacino ain't nuthin in this. Tony Montana baby, all day!

To me it's a 7/10 type affair. Not horrible, but certainly not a "classic" as many hail it today. There just isn't a lot of...I dunno, substance...there. And I never complain about that with movies but Scarface eh. I'm just tired of going to NAACP events and hearing all my peers declare it as their favorite movie.

They aren't my friends - I don't have many black friends. These are people I have to deal with whenever I'm dragged to NAACP youth meetings *sigh*

godfather is a pretty bad movie.  I don't think I would have even watched it if it wasn't for all the hype.  scarface on the other hand is actually a funny movie to watch with how over the top it gets with the violence.

I consider both movies pretty low and shitty though.  If you see somebody praise either, just tell them they're wrong and say it's another organized-crime-with-honor-shooting-people-in-the-nuts type of movie.

I had to post the Japanese trailer because of all the trailers it features the least nudity.  Note that the real movie is in mexican or some shit.  No idea why they released an english dub in Japania.  distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.

In a different trailer I can't link to, Jodorowsky brags about how he slept with every woman that appears in The Holy Mountain.

The Godfather is like having a bottle of Fat Tire, whereas Shitface is like glugging down a 40 of schlitz.  Scarface, just like Schlitz, is only for minorities, alcoholics, and dirty poors.  Some of us here have CULTURE.

I don't understand how people can love the Die Hards, the Terminators, and all of that and shit on Scarface while harpin' about "culture".

Not that I'm a very big fan of either of those, I think the killer to me for Scarface is Pacino's terrible acting, and the odd contrast that many people appear to take the movie seriously.  Black people taking Scarface seriously would be like me, I dunno, taking Dumb and Dumber seriously.

You see, the difference is that Robocop is a pretty clever satire, whereas Scarface is shit.  The first clue that it's shit is the whole De Palma thing.  That is usually a dead giveaway.

I wouldn't place Scarface in the summer blockbuster genre. It's really more of a cult movie which  got destroyed by popular media.

Robocop - Clever satire disguised as a dumb action movie.
Indiana Jones - The first movie is the only great movie.  I don't see how it is comparable to Scarface, or big dumb summer action movies in any way.  Moreso than any other movie, Raiders has something for everyone.  It's an "action" movie in that it is bloody exciting, never relenting, for the entire running time, and it is shot FUCK ALL GORGEOUS amazing.  On my short list of personal favorites.  A definite desert island disc.
Die Hard and terminator - Good entertaining action movies.  I don't think they are great, but they are good at what they do.  Unlike Scarface.

Pacino delivers one of the worst performances in the history of post-1980 US cinema.  For all I know, the script might be brilliant, but that performance, above all other issues, is absolutely, astonishingly terrible.

Keanu does better accents.  He sounds like a cartoon character!  Plus he is in Hammy pacino mode, which is always terrible.  Normal Pacino mode sometimes results in goodness.

TVC: While hammy Pacino can be painful, I thought he was great in Scarface. On the flip side I felt his performance in Heat was laughable; I recently bought the film and watched for the first time in ages yesterday. You can see the strut in his walk - everything is exaggerated and hyperbolic, and it doesn't mesh with the movie to me. Although I guess some would say that was the point lol - one of the differences between Pacino and De Niro's characters. But meh I don't buy that. De Niro out acts and out classes Pacino in that film, top to bottom

Himuro: Like I said, it's a 7/10 type film. I'm not bashing it, but it DOES feel like this cheap straight to DVD type movie. I wouldn't say that about Die Hard or even Commando. And I fucking HATE hearing black people praise it and declare Montana their role model. Do these people skip the last 5 minutes of the film or something?

Just got back from the store.

When I say Hammy Pacino, I mean the total package.  The accent is ridiculous, but combined with the ridiculous and, again, cartoony way the man carries himself, it's hard to even begin to take him seriously.  And it's not like this is the only movie Pacino acts like a ridiculous twat in.  Fuck, the last 25+ years have been dotted with terrible Pacino performances.  I think he must have gotten an undiagnosed brain tumor in the late 70s or something, because I fucking know the cunt can act well.

I predict my views will roughly align with PD.  I will give an honest response after I watch the movie; I will not rose tint it or shit tint it.

Pre-watching, in addition to the objectively bad Pacino performance, I found the movie tonally distinguished mentally-challenged.  You can have a fun campy gangster movie, sure, but you have to fucking go the distance.  In Scarface, I recall most everything being played straight--it seemed like Pacino was the only one in on the fun.  I can understand if Pacino was playing up the kitsch factor in an attempt to match classic gangster movies of the 30s and 40s, but that doesn't work so well when you're the only person in on the joke.

Well, I agree with this. Still love the movie, though.

The movie could have been a masterpiece but little things hold it back, and start building up. It's one of the few action/crime films I've seen with such a large emphasis on a multitude of character development and emotional stuff. I thought Pacino's wife tried her hardest to ruin the movie - she's that bad, and annoying. Why couldn't she get killed or something? In fact, nearly every woman in this movie sucks. Strike that - every woman in the film sucks. Portman, Judd, all of them. The writing in the emotional scenes, especially the women stuff, is just stupid.

On the other hand almost every action scene in the fucking film is perfect. IMO a lot of action films seem to treat guns like toys; they're big and loud, but seem more like toys than actual weapons that can kill people. In Heat I got the feeling that the actors were shooting real guns at each other. The sound wasn't the typical blam-blam-blam I used to make while playing with my GI JOES - it was fucking real, or at least it sounded real to me. Most of the male performances are also amazing. De Niro is amazing, and Bruce Wayne, Buffalo Bill, and Bubba also give good supportive performances

Jesus, PD, Heat is worse than Scarface.  That turd is the most effective sleeping pill I've ever taken.  I find it easier to believe that people worship Scarface than that there are actual Michael Mann fanboys.  The mise en scene of his films feels as though it was born of a steam-powered machine in the 80s, and hasn't had it's piping upgraded since.

Don't worry nintenho, no one here thinks you can comprehend more than that.
do you guys really not get how simple either movie is?  the godfather book was considered trash when it came out but then the movie was considered high art.
If important films can't have lowbrow text as their source material, there goes the entire Alfred Hitchcock oeuvre.
/touchdown
In reality, there is this one group of extremely cruel and vicious people that murder for money.  They are called the Mafia.  There is this one movie that shows these people as family men that murder for honor, it is called bullshit.  I did not know anything about the godfather story before I watched it so you can see why I would be disappointed.  It's just a trashy, pretentious story that tries to look "gritty" and falls on it's ass.  That's all very obvious.

Uncle Tom means a slave that would give his life to free other slaves.  It's meaning was distorted when some racists made a movie where they showed the "uncle tom" as a slave loyal to the white masters.

Wait are you saying that the mafia as depicted by The Sopranos, The Godfather, and those terrible Gotti family reality shows isn't real in its depiction of honor?  These terrible and vicious men that put merit in family date back to the mid-19th century, and you can date them back to the Renaissance if you don't restrict yourself to one mafia with origins in Italy.

Also. . .Scarface is kinda poorly shot.  I am guessing this is because it wasn't actually filmed in Florida, so they couldn't do many location-y shots.  It's like "Gee, there sure are a lot of CA license plates in Florida!"

I can see why people say it looks like a TV movie, but it does feel better in non-exterior shots.

Uncle Tom means a slave that would give his life to free other slaves.  It's meaning was distorted when some racists made a movie where they showed the "uncle tom" as a slave loyal to the white masters.

You know, Pacino's performance is still pretty hammy, terrible, and unsellable, but the movie has bigger problems.

I've been paying attention to the script, and so far it's kind of a mess.  It has some Stone trademarks, like the use of stock footage, usage of historical events to create fictions, the cheesy one liners, the relatively basic moral duality. . .it is definitely a Stone movie.   But what I am finding is that it is kind of reminiscent to another Stone mess. . .Natural Born Killers, namely in that both films have pacing issues (in the case of Scarface, that is as much the director's fault, but Stone had to have written it to be this long), and an extremely basic theme with enough muddling mixed in to make you think that he was trying to get at something deeper, but couldn't quite make it clear.  It doesn't feel nearly as disjointed as Natural Born Killers, but I sort of like that aspect of NBK.

So far, I'd say the two are about on par.  This is going to get dinged for being FUCKING LONG though.  170 minutes?  There are very very very very fucking few movies that need to be anywhere NEAR that long.

I hate Natural Born Killers.

It's love/hate for me.  I love its visuals, but so much of the content is muddled beyond reason, and some of it is flat out distinguished mentally-challenged.

I kind of like fractured films like that because I like trying to figure out what Stone was getting at.  He had a very obvious message about the media, but he clearly intended to say much more.  He was apparently doing a lot of drugs at the time.  I appreciate the Leonard Cohen, too.

Woody is great in it, too. I'm give or take on the other performances, but Woody was great casting.  He's a great actor in pretty much everything he's in, although he doesn't show a ton of range.

Scarface, this is like a 90 minute movie dragged to three hours.  You can't do the epic crime rise and fall thing when the characters have the depth of a piece of cardboard.

Scarface?  No.  I don't know a lot about it outside of what I learned in The Aviator :p  I figured the only real connection was that both films were really violent for their time.

Fuck, I am going to have to do an Oliver Stone blog post.  Or three.  That nicca needs defending in this brutal day and age.

No, the structures and characters of both movies are basically identical, except for the change in time and place.  So, when you say that it's a B-movie that's been stretched out to epic length, you're more right than you know.

And looksie!  The original is only 93 minutes long!

I am guessing this got bloated to huge proportions due to the Pacino/Godfather connection.

I still want to know how Moroder fits into this pie.

Is the original worth tracking down?

It's not my favorite gangster movie (it's a little too primitive, like Little Caesar and Public Enemy; The Roaring Twenties is MUCH better), but it's a pretty good film.  Way better than the '80s version, IMO.  First Paul Muni movie I ever saw.  It's weird that he used to be a big star, his acting's so hammy and over-the-top, even when compared to his contemporaries.

You see, I like old school movie acting.  Probably the art cigarillo in me.  That acting only really works when everyone is doing it though, and I doubt anyone could make it work today.  It's kind of a shame.  Acting has generally shifted towards realism, not just in dramas, but in most types of live-action movies.  There's room for all sorts of acting in cinema, but nobody ever explores that range anymore :(

Dude you are on the reefer.  You probably fall asleep during it.  Here's a hint:  the movie doesn't end at the chainsaw scene.  It goes on for like 7 more hours.

Also, TVC, the DVD for the old version of Scarface is really cheap, I think. Eight bucks, maybe?  Perhaps even less depending on where you buy it.

I don't get this.  What's so good about the chainsaw scene?  It's not especially gory or anything.  Dexter blows it out of the water.  You don't even see the saw going into flesh at any point.

Also, why is the Scarface such a cockface to Salieri?

do you people understand the sarcasm in the uncle tom comment?  it was very transparent.

I just hated how the movie insisted upon itself.  It just didn't have much of a story, although the acting was pretty good.  If you're a baby boomer, I can understand why you would call it your favorite crime movie of all time because you were hyped to jack off on it.  If you were born after it came out, then one viewing is all you need in your lifetime.  I don't get why any young person would give a fuck about the movie.

Scarface is shit really too but at least it's not as boring.

As i said on msn I think the scene was just generally shocking, since you didn't expect it the first time around

1) There's more to a movie than the story
2) The Godfather is a by-the-numbers mafia flick, but it invented the numbers
3) The acting perfectly fits the tone of the movie set by the visuals, the time period, and the score
4) That score is fuck all amazing
5) Its visuals are often copied, but very rarely matched

The first two Godfather flicks are films in every regard.  Maybe the story is a bit plain to you today, but look at the total packages.  They don't make them like this anymore.

I'm not a huge Godfather defender.  They would likely not even rank on a serious top 10 list, but to deny that they are of extremely high quality when ranked along with the apex of American cinema is to be as ridiculous as a holocaust denier.  I don't think Coppola is especially talented, either that or he is talented and unlucky, but he earned his reputation with those two films alone.

The first Godfather is a perfect film imo; it's my third favorite film. It's also a film you have to watch in context to a certain degree. Dismissing it as another "by the numbers mob flick" is stupid because as TVC said, it's the original. This is like dismissing Straight Outta Compton as another "by the numbers gangsta rap album" - no, it's the original, and the innovator. IE, it's not the first of its kind, but it's the first defining achievement of the genre.

When I watch it I'm awed by how perfect everything is, without being stylistic or particularly show-y. The acting is amazing; every performance is top notch, even minor supportive roles. The score is classic. Many scenes are simply amazing - to me, the baptism scene towards the end stands out most. It's not a particularly heavy film in terms of content, but that doesn't mean it's simple. These are layered characters, some more complex than others. And then there's Michael.

Die Hard is a fun action movie while Scarface is crime drama. They're evaluated by different standards. As a drama, Die Hard isn't very good either. As an action movie it is great. Scarface is only good for camp value.

I realize that it's a significant movie but I don't expect somebody praising the movie today to actually be talking about all of that (especially with the way PD worded how the people he met on the street would not "get" the movie).  While it's an important movie, it's simply not some good.  The directing and acting were as perfect as possible.  But the movie's story was trash.
