Title: Official HEAVY METAL RADIO topic (NOW WITH A FUCKING PODCAST)

My weekly metal mania radio show is held on Wednesday nights from 9:00-11:00PM Eastern time (that's 6:00-8:00 Pacific).

We play a wide range of metal, including: Black, Death, Heavy, Power, and Thrash

It's not an alltogether serious show, so don't be surprised to hear us having some fun if you tune in.

There's got to be a fucking connection loose someplace or something. It cut out on us last week when we were in the middle of playing, and it was out again pretty much all night tonight.

The prep time is usually pretty minimal. About the only thing I may do is decide which Manowar songs I want to play at 10:00.

This week though, we're getting some stuff ready beforehand. It should be neat.

Yeah, I know. It's kinda heartbreaking.

They kind of have two modes of songs. One is the typical punk, pre-hardcore kind of thing, as seen in Die Die My Darling and Green Hell and Earth AD, and then there's a bunch of songs reminiscent of pop ballads of the 50s played at breakneck speeds, like I Turned Into A Martian, Hatebreeders, Nike A Go Go, and a bunch more. I believe their first album was more of the latter, and the second album the former, but it always struck me as neat, since their lyrics stayed the same.

In all honesty after hearing the Garage, Inc. covers I was expecting something akin in quality to The Ramones' early stuff. :(

they used to only play on halloween in one club

the leader of the band (jerry only, not danzig) is the heir to a hobby knife fortune. like higher grade xacto, and he was a bit of an engineer himself (he worked for his dad during the day and was a punk at night) so he had money and talent to design their own guitars and the like.

if you pick up the EXCELLENT book American Hardcore (extremely biased) it has a huge chapter on them. it's a GREAT read. Far better than the documentary movie which came out a few years ago.

Again, I don't have any of their CDs. I think there's some Poison and Ratt in the back. Any songs in particular that you want to hear? I'll see if I can find them.

Well, power metal sounds nothing like black or death metal.

One of the main characteristics of power metal is the 'clean' vocals. There's not really any of the gruff growling that's typical of death metal.

have you considered just using dreamhost? they have a lot of that software included already so it shouldn't be too hard to set up

I may end up going with Drupal or something, as I hear you can easily tweak that to allow podcasting. Still no idea if it's the best option, though.

black metal usually has cookiemonster (growling) vocals, heavily bass oriented and kinda repetetive instrumentals in the background. It's not a rarity to find a song that has the same melody playing for the entire song.

death metal is the more screaming and squeeling vocals stuff.

that was my beginners analysis on the genres.

The power metal description is fine. However, you're a little off with the descriptions of death/black metal. Death metal has various sub genres within it, with some being more melodic or more brutal than others. There's usually fast down-tuned guitars and double bass, though not anything like those in power metal. Black metal in general sounds like it's recorded in a cave or an empty pool. Again though, there's such ultra-tr00 kvlt black metal bands like say Darkthrone or Emperor, as opposed to some of the more relatively commercial black metal bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth. It's hard to describe what's what without listening to various bands as examples and points of references. In fact, rereading over what I wrote I feel I myself have not adequately described the genres. In summary, listen to these bands for examples of the genres:

Power Metal:
Blind Guardian
Stratovarius
Sonata Arctica

Traditional Black Metal:
Emperor
Mayhem
Marduk

Symphonic Black Metal:
Anorexia Nervosa
Dimmu Borgir
Naglfar (kinda)

Melodic Death Metal:
In Flames
Dark Tranquillity
Kalmah

Brutal Death Metal:
Origin
Krisiun
Cryptopsy

I recorded the show on a PC with audacity without any problems, but I ran into problems when everything was over.

First, I found out the old piece of shit doesn't have any USB 2.0 ports. FUCK. Transferring the 1.1GB WAV over to my external HD would've taken 30-45 minutes. Fuck, that's out of the question.

Then I was just gonig to keep the WAV file on the desktop of the PC and transfer it over to my PC tomorrow via a network share (\\computer\c$\), but there's no more goddamn live internet jacks in the room.

Fucked again!

I'll have to think up some solution to this problem. Fuck fuck fuck.

I had the volume up way to high when recording or something, because there's a horrible hiss in the background whenever there's something quiet. Oh well, you live and learn.

I don't want to specifically go naming the bands at this point, but one of the two of them should be fairly obvious. Not naming them sorta absolves me if it falls through somehow, though, I guess.

If these interviews go through, we're going to try to get some more. Actually, last semester we were heavily debating trying to get in touch with Alice Cooper, but I had no idea what I'd even talk to him about so we backed off on it.

Ayreon practically defines the word epic. I will say that the Sixth Extinction is most epic song on the new album IMO. That doesn't take away the total epicness of the rest of the album.

Ayreon isn't really what you would call a traditional "band". Arjen Anthony Lucassen is the main guy behind Ayreon. He writes the music but he hires all these different musicians to make his albums.

I've only been listening to Ayreon recently and I'm trying to take my time so I can really appreciate his albums. The albums are these 2 disc rock/metal/folk operas. I've only listened to The Human Equation which has the notable guests of James LaBrie of Dream Theater, Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine, and Devin Townsend, to name just a few, and the new 0101101 album.

So as of right now I can only really speak about those 2 albums but it should be noted that Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden was on the Flight of the Migrator album.

Blah blah blah. I'll let the music do the talking for me. Please watch them all because you won't get a good idea from just one song and don't forget about the folk song I posted on the last page because that was Ayreon too.

This is actual college radio. We're in the radio station every Wednesday night at 9:00PM pleaying shit out over the airwaves live. I just record all of our sound output with Audacity and convert it to mp3 at home.

There was a ton of info on the site, but I corrupted both the database as well as our database backup, so everything was lost. I'm in the middle of a slow restoration process now, as you can see if you go to the site.

We tried our damnedest to get Ensiferum to play Wanderer. They looked over right at us at one point, paused what they were saying, and then continued from there. At least they know people really like that song.

I was pretty disappointed with The Human Equation. I like a good bit of Arjen's stuff but Human Equation was just too cheesy. I think Star One is a far better outfit for his space rock. The live album absolutely kills.

We were out of time, so we ended the show with it. It was pretty much "Well, it's not time for us to shut the F up and play some Iron Maiden. Here's The Nomad! Enjoy!" ::METAL ENSUES::

Next week is my cohost's last week so we're doing something special. We plan to be on the air live from 9:00PM - whenever we decide to quit. We're thinking 2:00AM or 3:00AM. I'm not opposed to playing until dawn and then just walking to the next building to start my day at work. The show is going to be awesome.

The only standards each week are as follows:
We start the show with an Amon Amarth song
At 10:00 we play 2 Manowar songs
At some point we shut up and play Iron Maiden.

BTW, we haven't picked a Maiden song for tonight yet.

Apparently he also did Phantom of the Opera with holyhell and Where Eagles Fly with Sarah Brightman... there's no question he's got a phenomenal set of lungs on him. I wonder if he was classically trained or anything?
