Title: So what are some good classic horror movies?
Post by: Ecrofirt on February 04, 2008, 02:54:15 AM
I'm looking for movies from the 60-80's, I guess. I've got this big collection of horror DVDs, but I either have no urge to watch them because they look too cheesy (some of my zombie movie collection and whatnot), or I've got no urge to watch them because I've already SEEN them.

I'm looking for something fresh. I've got the original The Hills Have Eyes, and I'm going to pop that in my DVD player tonight and work my way through it as I lay in bed this week.

What else is good?

the exorcist 1 and 3 (skip 2 and the prequels, and try to imagine 3 has a less over-the-top ending)

If you've got a big collection of horror DVDs, then you've probably already got everything I could recommend. John Carpenter movies, Alien, Evil Dead II, The Omen, The Shining that's about all I've got, I'm not much of a horror fan. Hellraiser I & II are good. House is fun (House II is good for a few chuckles, but it's pretty bad). Oh yeah, and there's Cronenberg. You should watch Videodrome if you haven't. And of course you should watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show too, even though it's not horror. :lol

Do you count suspense movies (like giallos) under horror?

-and some other, most likely smarter dude already mentioned John Carpenter, but I cannot ehphasize enough how freaking good Halloween and The Thing are.
-Candyman is from the 90's, but I think its easily the best Clive Barker movie.
-the 80's "The Blob" remake is pretty fecking awesome.
-The Hitcher, original only.
-and Poltergiest should count for fucking up more kids then delicious lead paint.

Check out Dario Argento's movies if you haven't already, Ecrofirt.  Start with Suspiria.  Giallos are also good for freakouts - I recommend What Have You Done To Solange?

whatever happened to baby jane
hush, hush, sweet charlotte

at midnight i'll take your soul
incubus (esperanto horror.  with william shatner)
witchfinder general
the house that dripped blood (based on robert bloch stories)
let's scare jessica to death
twitch of the death nerve
raw meat (aka deathline)
last house on the left
the crazies
ganja and hess (awesome and lyrical black vampire movie)
tomb of the blind dead
the wicker man (wierd, but worth watching)
martin
the brood
shivers
eyes without a face
the changeling

also, if you want to go further in the past, check out the work of val lewton
80s horror rarely grabs me because it's usually just cheap imitations of the known classics

this is predominately english/american stuff.  there's a ton japanese stuff which is now in print (jingoku or hell is a favorite.  it's about buddhist torment in the afterworld) and you have, of course, the gaillos and other country's horror but i wanted to list stuff you could easily track down through netflix or amazon.

i had never seen a bava film until about a month ago and that was the second one i'd see.  my first was hatchet for the honeymoon which everyone should watch because the lead character is awesome.  very patrick bateman.
