and for the first time ever I actually had fun playing Smash Bros.
I like the level design a lot, especially the F-zero and Donkey Kong levels. They really keep me on my toes.
But on top of that, the single player mode is a big, big, BIG draw for me. Nintendo needs to work on a new Kid Icarus stat. Pit's section in SSE had me smiling. :)
Nintendo really put a lot of work in this game. The level design in particular, is extremely well polished and has tons of variety. The mixture of platforming and fighting in the Donkey Kong stage was fucking awesome.
I'm not sure who to use though. I'm partial to Sonic and Pit so far.
-
lol didn't notice that
-
Did they remove wavedashing and L-canceling?
-
They removed wavedashing, and I don't know what L-canceling is.
-
Never played a Smash Bros game in my life. Played Melee for like half an hour and was not impressed.

Brawl owns, Drinky. Buy it for your daughter.
-
I just played Brawl for the worst time, and the terrible graphics kicked me in the nuts. It basically looks the same as the GC game. What a piece of shit.
-
It is the same as the Gamecube version, anyone who went to Sakurai's GDC boredom discussion would see, he even compared the two models. They are the same.
-
Brawl owns, Drinky. Buy it for your daughter.
don't taint her anymore drinky, nindogs and galaxy were enough.

Um. What? The game looks MUCH better than Melee.
-
SSE is horrible and represents everything wrong with Nintendo fans.
OMG PEACH AND ZELDA AND SONIC AND MARIO AND LINK AND KIRBY AND EVERYONE ON THE SAME SCREEN AND OMG THEY ARE SAVING THE WORLD TOGETHER + horrible level design + bad controls = SSE

No it doesn't. Even if it looks incrementally better (which I also doubt), there is no arguable way that it looks "MUCH better." Maybe Melee didn't have widescreen, though.
-
The character models are much, much more detailed (same is true of the backgrounds).

It's not really close.

so we went from upgraded n64 models to gc tp models? how is that an improvement?

Nintendo: innovation.

same model, new textures, k

pretty much
if tp had come out before melee, they'd have a different set of textures to clone

i agree in some ways, but it's completely different from the typical fighting game story mode we're used to. I like the idea of SSE a lot. I mean, watching a cutscene is infinitely more appealing than reading fucking text. I don't want to read text in a fighting game I want to see ASS KICKING. Plus, some of the cutscenes are pretty well made. The Donkey Kong cutscene was aweosme. FUCK THOSE KOOPAS STEALIN MAH BANANAS and DIDDY KONG with COCONUT GUNS.
On the gameplay side, SSE embarks on new ground as well. While it's not perfect, I think the mix of platformer and beat em up in a fighting game story mode is really neat.
-
pretty much
if tp had come out before melee, they'd have a different set of textures to clone
And what about characters like Pit or Sonic?
-
Yeah, for the most part, that's more of retexturing than anything. There aren't drastically more polygons. The game's a technical dog. Nintendo got lazy with it because they knew people would buy crap. Shocking.
It's not really close
It is if you can tell a texture from a polygon.
-
"we had to use nintendo's assets" - sakurai
-
I don't really care if it's new texturing or new modeling, the models look much better. Zoomed out the game looks the same (and really, really needs AA), but the evidence is there...Melee used slightly beefier N64 models. Brawl doesn't look great great, but it's disingenuous to say that difference isn't really obvious.

And what about characters like Pit or Sonic?
does anyone give a fuck about pit or sonic
having an opinion on a nintendo mascot is like having an opinion on he-man versus gi joe, or one-inch heels versus four-inch ones
nikka here ain't a bytch
smh at himuchan
-
It's really not obvious, though. If they were side by side, I could tell the difference, but that's about it. That's not giving Brawl a lot of credit, but it doesn't really deserve credit in the visuals department.
-
To be fair, the characters don't usually look blocky because you're looking at them from a pretty far distance.

if i were walking by a kiosk running either melee or brawl, replete with its attendent crowd of ten-year-old pokekids and 26-year-old morbidly obese ninpedos, i wouldn't be able to tell you which version it was with a casual glance

Brawl has 16x9 support. I think.

But they do look jaggy!
Is it possible for a game to not be jaggy at 480I/P?
-
actually, i COULD tell the difference: brawl probably has more hyperventilating mouthbreathers squeaking about "pit and sonic" standing around its kiosk at any given moment.
-
Don't forget Solid Snake.

You might be right, but the relatively small size of the characters on screens amplifies the effect. Those nicer textures Brawl has? They dun look so nice when they have the PS2 Launch Game effect applied.
-
The draw for the single player for me wasn't the story. Let's face it, it sucked and it dribbles with fanboyism and fanfiction bullshit.
The draw is that it plays frighteningly like Kirby Super Star, except better. I'm not even shitting you. It took the Halberd level to really show it to me, but the two games are really similar in single player.
The thing is, people are bitching about recycling. Well, I'm pretty sure all fighting games do that. Even if you don't consider Smash Bros. fighting, you have to realize that games such as the majority of the Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken series are all just the same game over and over again with extra characters. You may argue that they had new features. Well, so did Brawl. Brawl has final smashes and some characters have new or different moves. Plus, there are new levels that are more even playing fields.
Brawl is a great game, except for the fucking bullshit matchmaking. Fuck that shit.
-
the FMVs are shitty as hell. non-widescreen with a huge black border around the entire video. :yuck
-
When fighting games recycle, they usually have clearly better visuals in subsequent editions.
-
is brawl even WS, hyp?
-

brawl looks much better than melee. KOF however looked mostly the same until KOFXII.
lol wut
-
Well, I was going to put a caveat about 2d games in there, but I figured anyone with a brain would auto-insert it.
And as has been pointed out: Brawl has arguably better textures, but the models are just about the same, and the better textures don't really add much since the characters are too small and the game is hideously jaggy.
-

gameplay is true widescreen (fills up entire screen), FMVs aren't.
-
kof12 is full hd and i doubt they have a budget like Nintendo's.
-
TVC, you play wii games on a CRT right? it's still jaggy even with that setup?
looks like crap on my plasma. i play it in the blurry unsharpened video mode (in options) to try and compensate for jagville.

Tekken 5 looks worse than fucking Tekken Tag
and there's not THAT much of a visual upgrade from VF4:EVO to VF5.
So what are you complaining about? This is true for all fighters.
-
I have a rear projection HDTV.
Tekken 4-5 is a rare exception. That has more to do with Tag hitting one out of the park than from lack of trying.

Yes, that is what I wrote. The characters still look like muddled, jaggy messes on screen, so I don't think the new textures are doing much.

On ps2? yes it does

That's not what I said. Brawl has better textures-- this is not arguable. Just because you don't "see" them because of what you have determined is poor image quality doesn't mean they aren't there.
I feel disgusting having to even defend this game, but I don't understand why EB reserves the fine toothed comb to nitpick faked "DX8 lighting engines" but then couldn't tell Brawl apart from Melee. It's not close, and it takes serious semantic wrangling to say the game doesn't have better freaking textures!
I don't think the game looks SUPERB either, but I'm at least being honest. I can tell the difference between Brawl and Melee handily even through the sixty seven meters of vaseline that are apparently being processed from my GameCube Duo.
I am not arguing there is not recycling going on or that the boost should match what McDragon posted on in reference to VF4 -> VF5 transition. Even if I wanted that to be the case (I do), I know it isn't possible.
But good lord. No, the game doesn't look great. I wish it was on 360 too.
-
jesus christ, himu musta had that nintard train give him syphilis during its run on his ass last night
-
:lol
-
Hey, my original complaint was that it looked the same as Melee. And it does. I rest my case. And I NEVER COMPLAINED about faked lighting in Uncharted or anything. Stop attributing things other people do to me.
I'm not even one of the graphic nitpickers (except when it comes to PC games), so get who makes what complaints straight.
-
what's the point of these "better" (read: recycled from twilight princess) textures if they're reduced to blobs of shimmering crap? given the camera distance and the roughly identical models, there's no practical difference between brawl's and melee's visuals. fuck, tekken tag tournament looks better than EITHER of them.
-
Why don't we talk about Himu's MAGIC EYES that see VF4 and VF5 looking close, but Brawl looks MUCH BETTER than Melee.
-
I was pretty careful in not attributing that to anyone specifically.
Professor: Look, you're not going to get me to say they make a huge difference. Even if they were 100% clear with 32x AA, the game is played in a manor that it wouldn't really contribute much overall. But the textures are better.
And i don't know if they were all recycled directly from TP...I think Game Arts was recoloring a denim texture for a few characters though. Mario was retextured (and it looks kind of weird). Same with Wario.
I was pretty careful in not attributing that to anyone specifically.
Well, none of your complaints applied to me, so you were basically talking to the hand!

Why are Sarah's tetas smaller in VF5? :(

himu, you could have at least picked doa3/4, easier target with it's barbie textures but VF4/5? hell no.

I was joking with the VF line, guys. I mean come on. Nothing in VF4 compares to the fucking GUILIN stage in VF5, and the models have much better EVERYHING in VF5.
I just took it that TVC thought that somehow Brawl doesn't look better than Melee, which is what I got from his posts, so I wanted to make an extreme statement.
-
he's right, though. brawl doesn't look better than melee.
-
I think it looks better. They look similar, yes, but the graphics quality difference is definitely up there. Maybe this is because we were playing on an sdtv or something, I don't know.

But really, come now, gentlemen. I don't think SSBB looks that good, but at the very least, as Kev said, the textures are definitely better.

TEKKEN SUCKS
-
amen
-
Tekken indeed blows.
-
I wish my friend was home now so I could go play SSBB
O god what is HAPPENING TO ME?!!?

Never played a Smash Bros game in my life. Played Melee for like half an hour and was not impressed.
So which one is it?
You can't count a half hour as "played".

Tekken sucks, but Smash Bros moistens himumu's manpanties. Himu is either a 6 year old girl or alchiabes from GAF confirmed. Lol young padawan.

brawl is fun with friends/families though, so go easy on himu.

you probably dn't wish to speak to me ever again and I can't blame you
but tekken is balls. it's nothing but strings and combos. At least Smash has unique level design going for it.
-
tekken tag + doa2 + orphen, my first ps2 games.
i had fun.
-
Tekken does have a special place for me since it was one of the first PS1 games I had, with Jet Moto. :heart
-
tekken tag is the best tekken
I had tekken 1 with my psx, and it was balls. I just went to my friends house and played Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn instead.
-
Tekken sucks, but Smash Bros moistens himumu's manpanties. Himu is either a 6 year old girl or alchiabes from GAF confirmed. Lol young padawan.
Himuro does have good taste in fighting games, though. Smash can be fun with a lot of people, but then again, everything is fun in coop/multiplayer.
-
I played Tekken Tag for 17 hours straight in highschool :rock
Wow. You're young dude. I always thought you were older.
-
Same age as me.
-
this makes no sense because tekken tag came out when I was in 9th grade aka high school age and i'm 22
you flunked that much?
-
SSBB is the Official Evilbore March Game of the Month. :bow
-
Edit: Tekken 3 :'(
tekken 3 was pretty good when it came out i gotta admit. everyone was up on that game.
-
Tekken 3 was definitely the peak of the series. I lost interest with further installments in the series.
-
TEKKEN SUCKS
Hi Itagaki
-
:lol
Itagaki's hate against tekken is so fuckin hilarious
-
it's a joke iirc, not hatred.
-
goddamn I used to play a lot of Tekken, I could use every character :(
what a shit game
-
i won ttt
i had it like a year before i even owned a ps2
i remember when i just looked at the disc
-
I never got into TTT. I played the death out of T3. I didn't have a PS2 until about a year after launch, so I kinda missed out on TTT's time. I have played it a bit and I will concede that it is probably the best since it is just T3 on steroids.
-
They removed wavedashing, and I don't know what L-canceling is.
I'm sure GAF threw a party over that one. I've never seen so many nerds angry over their inability to perform a move in a video game.
-
i heard that when playing online multiplayer you can't see what the other guys choose at their team, so that coupled with the lack of communication means there's no way of knowing what teams there will be so it'll just be completely random and nonsensical. i mean wtf is up with that ???
-

pretty much. i think the only noteworthy addition was the tagteam option
-
The graphics are definitely a major improvement, you can tell when you play a carryover Melee stage.
One odd thing: All the characters are waaay bigger relative to the Melee stages. Kind of weird at first.

Samus is basically useless now because they took out the wdashing. She is way too weak. Though I still like her up tilt.

MMM these tears are so sweet. And they're everywhere! I could bathe in them.
For the record, I myself never played Melee enough to be able to wavedash even 50% of the time. I still find it ridiculous that it's removed from the game simply for all the people who bitch and moan about losing because of it in tourneys. Well, what do you expect? Surprise, some things take practice. It's not as if it was a gamebreaking exploit that was only available to a select group of people.
-
TEKKEN SUCKS
yes
-
i played and got my ass handed to me. tekken is good fun too btw
-
Sonic fuckin sucks.
-
Thank God, there's a general consensus here that Tekken has gone down the tubes. Anytime I read anyone singing the praises of the Tekken games in their current incarnations I feel like throwing up.
-
wasn't tekken 5 the best? (counting DR too)
not a tekken fan so i dunno much about it.
-
Tekken sucks too.

Tekken 5 was a return to form. The series peaked at 2/3. However, the gameplay has aged terribly so, while it currently resembles Tekken 3/TTT, the game is just not a fun as it once was. The gameplay is just dated, IMO, and it's showing its age.
-
i see.
thanks Rman.

(3:20:02 AM) Himu: I'm turning into a Smash cigarillo.
(3:20:03 AM) Himu: :(
(3:20:09 AM) Himu: I played Smash all night
-
Played all night with my bud.
I'm still not sure who to play as. After further investigation, Sonic sucks. He has no good "fuck off and get out of the screen" moves, and most of his move arsenal consists of spin dash stuff, which makes his move list feel redundant. Snake is neat, but not exactly fun to use imo. Which is disappointing. On top of that, the Shadow Moses stage is really lacking.
So far I'm partial to Diddy, Meta Knight, Jigglypuff, Fox, and Ice Climbers. Right now Fox is my main. His move list clicks with me the most, he's not a bad damage dealer, and he's got plenty of GTFO moves. My issue with him is that his Final Smash isn't that fun to use.
Single player continues to impress greatly. Cleared a few characters on my friend's file tonight on Classic mode. Love the credits that has you shoot every single character in the game for points.
The level design continues to impress even more so. The non static stages: Pictochat, F-Zero, Donkey Kong, Game and Watch, Wario Ware;etc. stages are easily my favorites because they have you continuiously moving or getting involved. I adore the level design a lot. If only other fighting games had stages nearly as creative as the Game and Watch stage.
SSE continues to impress as well. The Donkey Kong stage felt like a genuine platformer right out of Donkey Kong Country.
The Masterpieces section is LOL. I tried out Star Fox 64 and by the time I started playing the trial was already up, and for shit's and giggles (because I KNEW exactly where the trial would end) I tried out OoT, and the trial ends in the middle of the cutscene between Navi and Link. I don't know why they even do that stuff. I mean, OoT's intro is long as hell so why bother when you have a 3-5 minute time limit?
This will be bought day one when I get a new Wii along with No More Heroes.
-
Did you try Solid Snake, Himu? I'm kinda curious about how he fits in.
-
Yeah, I tried out Snake but I'm not a big fan of him. His moves consist of the NIKITA, mines, and grenades, and a few other stuff. It works well enough but he's not that fun to use imo, which sucks because I was looking forward to using him.
He doesn't feel out of place, though. Especially with omgz mature characters like Samus, Marth, and Ike in the game.
-
I mainly play as Marth, Diddy, Snake, and Ike. I unlocked Toon Link and Wolf O' Donell last night and I like how both of them play too. This isn't like Melee where I only like playing with 2-3 characters. I can't get better with anyone because I keep switching. :(
Btw, Samus sucks, but Zero Suit Samus owns. Hold the R button when picking Samus to start out as ZSS.
-
See, I'm really good with Sonic. He may not be super powerful, but since he has such awesome speed, you can fly by your opponents and just continually hit them until they get near 60ish% and start your air combos.
and his FS is awesome.
-
I spend at least an hour in this game's Sound Test mode whenever I play it. :-\
-
i dig the mgs4 love theme
smh @ nintendo spoiling shit
and about smash--i thought the gc one was fun in mp. never played it alone, though.

how dare nintendo spoil mgs4
fuck them in the face

they spoiled mgs4?

How did Brawl the spoil MGS4? By including the theme song? Big woop.

They're all 2D platforms

What I mean is that there's a lot of variety. They aren't static and boring like 99% of other fighters. They keep you involved.

What I mean is that there's a lot of variety. They aren't static and boring like 99% of other fighters. They keep you involved.
Melee had the same stuff.
Brawl's stages are MUCH better. Melee didn't have the Game and Watch stage, and I don't recall the F-Zero stage being THAT awesome in Melee. Melee also didn't have the Wario Ware stage.
-
Melee had a Game and Watch stage. I don't know what the Brawl one is like.
And there were TWO F-Zero stages.
Whatever, I don't know Brawl and probably never will.
-
It's the same as Melee. Himuro am mascot cigarillo confirmed.
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
Same game I played as a teenaged manchild, it seems.
-
the character roster in melee sucked. i could never get into the characters in Smash 64 or Melee. Thankfuly in this game I like a lot of characters and they're fun to play as.
-
mewtwo > that furry shit in brawl.
-
mewtwo > that furry shit in brawl.
Lucario is so much better than Mewtwo.

Lucario is so much better than Mewtwo.
all characters are much better than mewtwo.
i just liked using him.
-
is the game slower than melee or it's just me?
i feel like a moving tank :-\
-
I saw ONE video of Brawl, that one where the Fox player owns himself with a Final Smash, and it definitely seemed slower. I thought they just nerfed Fox, though.
-

They slowed the game down to the original game's speed (SSB64). Sakurai felt Melee was too fast and chaotic. :-\
I actually like Sonic. He's very fast, and he's great at poking and escaping falls.
I am going to write a review in a couple of days. The SSE is painfully embarrassing to play through so it's going to take me some time to finish it.

Wow, the more I hear of Brawl, the more I'm happy I never bothered to buy a Wii. I was looking forward to this game a year and a half ago.
smh @ me
-
Played it at Gamestop today. Not only did it look rather ugly (Nintendo has the worst kiosks) but it didn't play much different than the previous ones. I played for about 5 minutes with my brother, who LOVED it. sigh
-
Wavebirds are like $60 on Amazon. Fortunately I have 3. If you find a place to get a 4th for a fair price let me know.
BTW the stages are way better than Melee's.
-
Smash Brothers Brawl is great because I liked the old speed better anyways
Honestly, Brawl does look better. It doesn't look A LOT better (I mean, it's the Wii, come on) but it looks better.
-
so i played brawl for a couple hours at a friend's place. it feels pretty much like melee except all the new shit.
but the online is seriously distinguished mentally-challenged.
WHO'S BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT TO PUT A TIME LIMIT IN THE CHARACTER SELECTION SCREEN?
ok. so we had me and a friend on one tv. we tried to get two other people from two separate Wii's. if they didn't connect within the time limit (40 or so seconds), you had to leave and make a new game. distinguished mentally-challenged
-
How did Brawl the spoil MGS4? By including the theme song? Big woop.
It's not the theme song. It's a theme. Imagine if you had no idea that Eva was in the game and then "EVA'S THEME" popped up on the fucking Smash Bros level.
But it's not a big deal, I've heard it's just a remixed version of the song from the E3 06 trailer. That said, I would rather have not known the title.
-
That's cause you're a cigarillo, Kev.
-
wild homo pride.
-
eva was shown in some early scans, ugly old hag.
no big deal.
-
Btw, Samus sucks, but Zero Suit Samus owns. Hold the R button when picking Samus to start out as ZSS.
Yeah, I'm liking her a lot, but its distinguished mentally-challenged that her final smash is 'go become distinguished mentally-challenged samus.' You pretty much have to let your opponent get the stupid ball. I guess it doesn't matter if you turn that shit off though.
-
Yeah, I played it for a few hours yesterday. It's pretty fun, at least when you're playing with a couple people. It really does feel exactly like Melee though. Bit slower, a ton more characters, and (for the most part) better levels. The AI is still godawful though.
-
I guarantee you that the kid icarus level will be banned in tourney play.
I've already figured out you can do an up smash move on the bottom level and the opposition basically just bounces off and out of the stage with minimal damage.
-
It's already on most banned lists, but that's because you can destroy the platform and people with grapple recovery can't use them.
-
I don't like a lot of the new levels. Final Destination is going to be banned, and New Pork City is terrrrrible.
-
Why would Final Destination be banned?
-
The new levels rule dude, mostly. The ones that don't are at least creative and interesting.
FD has an issue where you can get sort of trapped under the stage during recovery.
-
I've read a variety of arguments, but the two biggest are that Dedede can chain grab all the way off the stage and that items like the laser gun can prevent you from ever having a chance...
-

I dunno, I don't like a lot of them. I hate the DK scrolling stage (in my experience online the best recovery wins), I hate New Pork City, I don't like Pit's stage (for reasons stated above), don't like Final Destination, not a huge fan of the Zelda stage (kind of boring)....
I guess I like the rest though. I was just expecting a really cool Earthbound level with Mother 3 coming out!
-
No one who bans stages uses items anyway.
Eldin, Pork, and DK scroll are the worst stages in the game tho, aside from the MB/WW/75m gimmicks. Everything else is aces. I think Pit's stage is pretty interesting.
-
If you can stomach fagbutts these guys are going through the stages ad nauseum:

I've been TRYING to read smash boards over the last couple days to get good at the game but I just can't do it.
-
I wanted info on Olimar, so I clicked their definitive thread on him and it's like reading an encyclopedia. I'll figure him out myself.
At least I know what his down B does now.

oh shit what does it do?
-
Not only does it call your Pikmin back to you (which they sorta do automatically and they barely run away, so whatever), it rearranges their sequence behind you.
Olimar starts the match with a default Pikmin color in the prime position, and every time you do downB it changes that default in a defined sequence. It's Red Blue Yellow Purple White or some shit, I forget. Each one has different effects and damage output.
-
meh
i only used olimar once and i won only because his c stick smashes are fast and excellent. i dont get his specials and his recovery sux imo.
Pit should be banned from noob play, i cant stand hearing HIYAYAYAYAYAYAYA for an entire match.
-
Olimar rules. I don't fuck around with his down B but his aerials, side B, and smashes are awesome.
-
I should try him out. His up b just feels useless to me and it makes me nervous about getting back to the stage.
I like toon link....I think he's better than regular link.
-
Toon Link is ridiculous, he takes a shit on regular Link.
Ike and Diddy are major buttfuck too. MetaKnight did not live up to expectations.
-
Meta knight is an aerial beast if used properly. His forward jumping regular attack is great for countering recoveries.
-
Event 41 on hard almost drove me crazy. I finally managed to beat it with Ike and I got close with Zero Suit Samus. Anyone else beat this event?
-
i jut played it for the first time yesterday - my initial impression is that its underwhelming.
-
I beat Event 41 with Pikachu somewhat easily. His Down Smash works really well against he computer. He's great for Cruel Melee too.
Boss Battles on Very Hard/Intense is the worst.
-
Finally unlocked ROB, G+W and Sonic... still have 4 characters to go. 66% done with the Subspace now, haven't had a chance to play this as much as I would like to. I hate New Pork City, that's my least favorite board so far... it's ugly, too garish and distracting, and the layout is like something an amateur cobbled together in the level designer. A lot of the boards seem a bit basic (Animal Crossing stage... Yoshi stage... I was expecting a bit more!), I really liked some of the more dynamic stages in Melee and even the first game. I haven't really unlocked too many of the new ones so maybe my impressions of the new stages will change.
-
My favorite is the Warioware stage. Dunno how it'd be in competition though.
-
I hate the Ike spamming, its like noobs simply can't get enough of the up b move!
Thank god Snake is in the game. Nothing like flying around dropping 'nades on everybody.
-
I totally suck with Snake.
Why is random totally broken? You constantly get doubles in the same match, or the same dude two matches in a row. My gf and I just did 4 randoms with CPUs and it was 2 Diddys vs 2 TLinks.
