If the GOP side didn't have a bunch of winner-take-all primaries, we'd have the same thing going on with McCain-Romney-Huckabee.

Dept. of cognitive dissonance

It's a bit of a puzzle to me, though maybe it shouldn't be, that some voters seem perfectly able to hold in their heads simultaneously the notion that Obama's a Muslim and that his Christian pastor is a problem.

A particularly pungent passage from Richmond, IN Palladium-Item:

"I am definitely going to try to go with Hillary," said [Mary Bunger, a 44-year-old single mom from Abington]. "I almost feel like [Obama's] anti-Christ from the Middle East."

Bunger reads news online about the election and has been "trying to talk everybody into voting, especially this year because I'm really scared for Obama to get it."

Bunger worries about the Illinois senator's ties to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose recent remarks and former association with the candidate made headlines the past couple months.

ALSO: In my limited anecdotal experience, and as Lynn Sweet reports today, the Muslim smear has penetrated pretty deep in Indiana.

I still care, mainly because I don't want Clinton to fuck over the country.

I trust Clinton less than McCain. At least I KNOW he's going to continue fucking up the country in a Bush style fashion.

More Republicans who crossed over seem to have done so either for more straightforward reasons -- they prefer one of the Democrats to the other, at least as a second choice, and may be considering crossing over in the general election.

That was the case with Larry Lamanna, 60, a Lou Dobbs fan and former Romney supporter at another table who doesn't like John McCain's stance on immigration.

He said he was "thrilled" to hear Clinton say she'd "obliterate" Iran. "It's time someone spanked those people," he said.

+1 for Hillary here in NC. I'm in NC-4 though, one of the best educated districts in the entire country, and expect my vote to be overwhelmed by African American and smartypants white liberals. I'm a smartypants white liberal too, but Obama is a weak politician in my eyes.

what's a Hilolary supporter doing reading the kos

I read kos too, though I admit that I do so in the same way that I read GAF as a PC gamer-for the occasional bit of sensible stuff buried in the festering pile of groupthink.

In other words, over half of the vote in the state's biggest college town -- an Obama stronghold -- has yet to even be counted.

McCain's doing the same thing, but it doesn't irk me nearly as much; I've already got him pegged as a doofus.  Hillary should know better.  In fact, I'm 99% sure she does know better, which makes it worse.

I was at the grocery store the other day and there were two old people in line behind me. I looked at some gum cause eye contact with old people can be dangerous. Anyway the old guy starts looking at the tabloids, and he comes across one with Obama. He studies it, and then turns and asks his wife with all seriousness 'Can you believe he cheated on his wife?'. His wife shook her head and he kind of just went back to looking at the rack.

These people are VOTING. :(

I agree. McCain signed on to this foolishness as another way to hit Obama on the "elitist" angle, and possibly peg him as a flip flopper. Plus if (I.E. when) the proposal fails to be passed he can just blame the democratic majority. Politics as usual, but dumber than usual. On the other hand Hillary definitely knows better, but like McCain she's continuing the elitist argument - which apparently failed tonight. She's doing anything and everything to take the nomination, and it's pretty disgusting (and disappointing)

I'm pretty sure that Bill Clinton put on a ton of weight during the 96 campaign, especially the primaries.  I might be remembering Primary Colors as if it were nonfiction, though.

Tangent!  Check out these exit polls. (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/index.html#INDEM)

By quick and sloppy mental math, 10% of the people who voted for Hillary in Indiana have no intention of voting for her in the primary.  4% of Obama supporters doing the same thing.

That's taking the responses seriously and literally, which is a big caveat.

Title: Re: Indiana! North Carolina! Fight!

Voters are kind of crazy.  In the early primaries McCain kept beating out the other Republicans among anti-war primary voters.  Edwards, the closest thing to a socialist in the mainstream Democratic field, generally did better among self-described conservatives than moderates or liberals.

There's a reason politicians dumb down the political discourse with catchphrases and draconian message control.  It's the same reason newspaper stories are written in the inverted pyramid style.

If Obama doesn't win the nomination, I'm voting for Nader.  However, if it is a neck and neck race with McCain, I'll vote for Hillary under the most extreme reluctance.  If she squanders this opportunity, then I'm pretty much done with the Democrats.  They don't seem to care about winning anything.

I'll vote for the democratic nominee. Hillary had my support when this thing started a year ago, but lost it as this thing got nasty. Nothing she did was "McCain has a black baby lol" nasty, but I thought it was nasty in the sense of the blatant pandering and divisiveness. Granted, I liked the idea of having a democrat in the WH who would kick the shit out of republicans. I didn't expect her to attempt to kick the shit out of a fellow democrat by using such disgusting tactics - from the SC fiasco to this GAS TAX gimmick. Ugh

She'll do anything to win. I understand politics is a game of thrones and to win you have to compromise certain values, but there's still a line that shouldn't be crossed. She crossed it countless times.

Wait, what?

The reason is that the Democrats clearly don't give a damn about securing the White House so why should I waste my Presidential votes on worthless Democrat candidates that are nominated by pure back room machine politics that have no chance of setting foot in the White House?  They squandered 2000 and 2004.  If they fuck up 2008 by nominating Hillary, then it is clear that they don't seriously intend to win, as she has yet to do a single thing right since she has been running.  My vote for President can be better used elsewhere.

This doesn't mean I'll be done with the Democrats entirely (US Representatives, US Senators, Governors, etc.) but for the President itself, yeah, I'll be finished.

I think his campaign rhetoric-in the primaries no less!-clearly points to him being more of a compromiser and a guy that will work out agreements for the sake of moving the country to a more unified place, a sort of post-partisan détente, if you will. Hillary has pretty much from the get go been a polarizing partisan figure, and her notion of change has, IMO, clearly been one of partisan ownership of the executive.

Obama should at least mess with the electoral politics some and help out downticket races by a huge amount. I think that Republicans have really set themselves up for an epic disaster on all fronts in November.

Both of their stances on most of the issues are pretty similar, though. The legislation crafted and presented to congress would be different-I can see Obama's administration working the bill some to ensure bipartisan support, and Hillary ramming it through out of a sense of "I'm the president, suck on this". Given that anything the GOP touches turns to shit, the latter is proabably better legislation.

I think that's a (very common) misreading of Obama's rhetoric, Frag.

Yeah, he uses "unity" a lot, but he's not badgering the Democratic party to move to the right, like Al Gore circa 1988 or any DLC candidate circa always.  In his book (which I haven't read; damned if I pay for a glorified campaign pamphlet) he explicitly dismisses the idea of compromise as good for its own sake.

What he's talked about is building a big popular coalition that will elect a governing majority and create enough pressure to overcome the interest groups he sees as being big obstacles.

Hillary's take is that powerful interest groups are intrinsic to the process, so the best way to get things done is to move them like chess pieces.  When she was asked how she'd get healthcare passed, she listed the lobbying groups that she'd get on her side to counter the insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

Maybe Obama's approach is naive and impractical, but it's sure as hell not based on capitulation.

Plus it has to be a better approach in the long term for a progressive agenda.  Big corporate interests only have as much political power as they're accorded by government officials.  If you accept that they have to be appeased to get something done, you're making a HUGE concession.

I personally feel the "us vs. them" rhetoric of the last 15 years is the most destructive thing about the American political system. Right now, our government is swinging back and forth wildly between two patronage systems. You're either part of the Republican patronage machine or the Democratic patronage machine. And whether it's viable or not, I greatly appreciate Obama's refusal to play the game.

I don't think "us vs. them" partisan rhetoric is that new or that destructive.  Partisanship is inevitable in a democracy.  People are meant to argue about things that they disagree on and there are a lot of genuine disagreements that people feel very strongly about.

However, "us vs. them" rhetoric based on ethnic and cultural lines is just incredibly shitty.  The scapegoating of queers/immigrants/Muslims really pisses me off.
