Movie composer Basil Poledouris dies in L.A
Thu Nov 9, 2006 1:20am ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Emmy-winning composer Basil Poledouris, best known for his powerful music for action-adventure films of the 1980s and '90s, died of cancer in Los Angeles on Wednesday, a spokeswoman said. He was 61.

Poledouris worked on the scores for the early Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicles "Conan the Barbarian" (1982) and "Conan the Destroyer" (1984), and his orchestral-and-choral compositions came to be considered high points in the genre of music for fantasy films.

His other feature credits included "The Blue Lagoon" (1980), "Robocop" (1987), "The Hunt for Red October" (1990), and "Free Willy" (1993). He won an Emmy in 1989 for his folk-based Western score for the miniseries "Lonesome Dove."

The Kansas City, Mo., native is survived by his mother and two daughters. No services are planned.

---------

I love his Conan score to a sickening extent.  So great.

It's amazing how this is still a standard piece of work in the fantasy genre. To me, it's just as classic as John William's greatest works, but sadly it doesn't get the same recognition (mainly because Williams composed some of the most successful movies in history).

Conan the Barbarian has one of the best scores ever (why do you think Nintendo lifted it for the Twilight Princess debut trailer?).  His work on RoboCop and The Hunt for Red October is also genius.  Need we forget he also worked on such genre cult classics like Red Dawn and Starship Troopers?

Wow, I never would've put 2 and 2 together and figured the same person scored Conan and Robocop.  Sitting here, thinking about both bits of music, it's pretty clear, though.

I may hate Robocop, but the music is very, VERY good for that kind of movie (or any movie for that matter)

How can you hate robocop. Even if you cannot accept it for its action, its satire is top notch.

LIKE GRAND THEFT AUTO RITE?

I can't stand them both. Satire seems to be used as a crutch for poor quality movies, and I can see this as an upcoming trend. "OMG Gigli was a decent movie, but it's satire of heterosexual, homosexual relations is really waht makes it a classic piece of film"

btw I was a little kid and lived in Detroit when I saw that movie. Maybe that will put more insight into my disdain for it lol

How the hell can someone think that satire is a crutch?  If just anyone can do well-thought satire, movies in general wouldn't be so shitty.

And Gigli was most definitely not a satire of homoexual/heterosexual relationships. It was just a Bennifer vehicle. :(

Satire doesn't make something better in all cases. In fact with Robocop, the alleged satire is not nearly as "brilliant" or relevent as it's most fanatical fans would have us think.

Much like with most other things, you are wrong.  I'd like to see you even try to justify your statement on satire.  Effective satire is always a virtue, and the vast majority of writers can't even achieve effective satire, let alone great satire.

The original Terminator has aged pretty horribly.  It doesn't hold a candle next to RoboCop.

Also, talk about crappy material; they had to pay out that writer for stealing the ideas that were also lifted for The Matrix apparently.

Terminator 2 is overplayed.  Good film, but also uneven due to bad Cameron editing.  It's not tight.

RoboCop is damn near flawless.

That's not what I said. My question was in reference to evolution and the origin of life. That is, something coming from nothing. Spontaneous generation all over again. Meh

To make matters worse, no one addressed the issue, or even tried. But I've washed my hands of that, and I'm a NEW MAN.

I'm tired of evolution/big bang whatever, and I find it quite funny that you call me closed minded because I don't agree with you, when the same hyperbolic case could be made of you and your thoughts on religion *gasp*

You're right, they don't. But both issues share some similarities with the idea of "nothing becoming something", and "nonlife becoming life". The world just suddenly appeared, and chemicals suddenly came together to form life. And where those chemicals came from no one knows. Oh well.

I've made my position quite clear on evolution, and each time the discussion...never becomes a discussion. People refuse to answer the questions are be honest about their beliefs, and that's fine with me.

But let us get back to rememebering the great work of a great artist

There's the bit about spontaneous generation, which has nothing to do with evolution.  Then you somehow think that evolution and the big bang have something to do with each other, and you're upset they don't explain the origin of life.  And then you point out that I'm not religious.

I'm rather open-minded when it comes to religious beliefs, mind you.  I'm just bitter that faith-based crap is leaking into US classrooms and the governemnt (though hopefully that bit of the nightmare is over now).

PD, we answered all your questions about evolution specifically in that thread. You kept dragging the "bububububu what is the origin of life" bullshit into it, and we answered with the paraphrasing that there is no such thing as "life" per se -- it's just another form of chemical complexity that humanity, given its rather specific bias, has ascribed a collection of metaphors to because they tend to be pretty impressed by the notion of consciousness.
