Movie composer Basil Poledouris dies in L.A
Thu Nov 9, 2006 1:20am ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Emmy-winning composer Basil Poledouris, best known for his powerful music for action-adventure films of the 1980s and '90s, died of cancer in Los Angeles on Wednesday, a spokeswoman said. He was 61.

Poledouris worked on the scores for the early Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicles "Conan the Barbarian" (1982) and "Conan the Destroyer" (1984), and his orchestral-and-choral compositions came to be considered high points in the genre of music for fantasy films.

His other feature credits included "The Blue Lagoon" (1980), "Robocop" (1987), "The Hunt for Red October" (1990), and "Free Willy" (1993). He won an Emmy in 1989 for his folk-based Western score for the miniseries "Lonesome Dove."

The Kansas City, Mo., native is survived by his mother and two daughters. No services are planned.

It's amazing how this is still a standard piece of work in the fantasy genre. To me, it's just as classic as John William's greatest works, but sadly it doesn't get the same recognition (mainly because Williams composed some of the most successful movies in history).

I can't stand them both. Satire seems to be used as a crutch for poor quality movies, and I can see this as an upcoming trend. "OMG Gigli was a decent movie, but it's satire of heterosexual, homosexual relations is really waht makes it a classic piece of film"

btw I was a little kid and lived in Detroit when I saw that movie. Maybe that will put more insight into my disdain for it lol

The original Terminator has aged pretty horribly. It doesn't hold a candle next to RoboCop.

Also, talk about crappy material; they had to pay out that writer for stealing the ideas that were also lifted for The Matrix apparently.

You're right, they don't. But both issues share some similarities with the idea of "nothing becoming something", and "nonlife becoming life". The world just suddenly appeared, and chemicals suddenly came together to form life. And where those chemicals came from no one knows. Oh well.

I've made my position quite clear on evolution, and each time the discussion...never becomes a discussion. People refuse to answer the questions are be honest about their beliefs, and that's fine with me.
