Title: Woohoo, got me a Wii!
Post by: duckman2000 on May 10, 2008, 01:10:30 AM
I had sworn not to buy a Wii until I could casually walk into a game store, casually ask for a Wii, and they'd answer (casually), that yeah, sure, we have some right here. Today was that day, and the little system is all sorts of brilliant SHIT. Got myself Metroid, Mario Galaxy and some other random games. Thought about picking up Zelda, but I've played a bit of that before and it's just prohibitively unpleasant to look at. Any games I'm missing, that aren't also going to make me want to hurl from the ugly?

So yeah, Dear Diary and so forth, but whatever. Wiiiiiii!

I stupidly assumed the system would come with component cables. I don't know why in the hell I assumed that, really. :/

Paper Mario looks pretty decent on a plasma/LCD because of its artistic style.

Zelda doesn't look too bad either.  If you don't mind the motion controls, the WII version is better than the GC version.

RE4 is good too if you haven't played it yet.

Honestly, WII graphics are gonna look terrible on non-CRT TVs.  The best thing to do is just to plug it into your old CRT if you still have one.

Graphics is obviously not a priority for anyone buying a WII.  What I don't get is how some people bash the WII's graphics while still playing PS2 games every week.

I don't know though, Mario Galaxy is pretty spectacular. I don't really care what it does (or doesn't do) under the hood, it looks remarkable.  :heartbeat

I have to get another CRT before I play my WII again.  I gave my old 34" CRT to my sister.

My 24" monitor can't scale 480p properly and SD looks terrible on my LCD HDTV.

Every game I've played has looked sort of terrible on my LCD, except this Mario game. Holy crap that looks good. Of course, this boss fight is just bloody awesome.
Title: Re: Woohoo, got me a Wii!

I think SD is more okay when it's a cartoony style.  Like I mentioned before, Paper Mario also looked pretty good.

Which bossfight? You'll find that Galaxy is pretty much awesome across the board and that it doesn't ever slow down, with each new set of planets unlocked. In fact, the best levels are all at the end (Garden galaxy).

And yeah on my lcd with component, it looks pretty fucking amazing.

It's by far my favorite game on the system, I'm glad to see you're liking it.

Keep the impressions coming, it's great to read stuff from people who're playing it for the first time

Nothing much on the system can stand up to Galaxy or even Metroid unfortunately.  RE4 is pretty damn jaggy in comparison (but still brilliant to play of course).

Endless Ocean is pretty nice underwater.  It's not SPECTACULAR, but you probably won't hurl either.

pure truth

you should've just thrown the dollars out of the window, it would've been a better investment, and a lesser waste of time

in six years the system will have accumulated more ridiculous shovelware worth making fun of than all the other console systems EVER released

finish No More Heroes and then destroy your Wii with a sledgehammer

and prepare to be shocked by the absolutely hideos image quality, I only got a Wii because I thought games through progressive component would look as glorious as on GameCube, but in fact it's like 3-4 times worse than on PS2 and I'm not kidding, I seriously never turn the system on anymore because it looks so awful that it's very, very repelling to look at Wii games in motion, it's a complete nightmare

it literally looks like shit, there's frequent dithering, poor colors, aliasing, pale tints, brown tints all over the place, videophiles on AVSForum are extremely pissed off at the fact that Nintendo borked their video output THAT bad

I'll only play Wii games when they release a backward-compatible Wii 2 with HDMI support, good image quality, a proper ATI GPU, and good upscaling to 1080p

Title: Re: Woohoo, got me a Wii!
Post by: Tieno on May 10, 2008, 03:44:17 PM
I've only really played Metroid, SMG and Zelda. Of those I've finished SMG.

Metroid is a really good game and surprised me, but near the end I had to backtrack to a different planet, got killed somewhere, shut it down and then get sidetracked into a few 360 games. Never picked it up since then.
Zelda, played for 20+ hours, same story as Metroid. Liked it a lot though.
SMG is just pure bliss, probably the least divisive Wii game because it's just that good and well-designed.

I'm finding it very hard to turn on my Wii again and it gets harder and harder as time passes by.

I paid $300 for the PS2 within a month of its launch and was forced into getting another $200 of crap with it, it was the shittiest system visually of last gen, and you don't hear me lamenting said purchase. 8) Only game I can think of to add into the suggestions pile other than what's already been said is Metal Slug Anthology if you can find it.

This man speaketh the truth. RE4 is perfected on the Wii and Super Paper Mario is good, if you can handle a slow story and long cutscenes. OP, it sounds like you already have the 2 best games for the Wii in Galaxy and Metroid, and those will last you a good long while.

Get Ghost Squad if you like arcade shooters or Virtua Cop. A good deal at $30.

Buy Nights if you liked the Saturn original. It's worth the $20 price tag.

Don't buy Super Paper Mario or No More Heroes. Both are garbage.

These are games that are fun/I found worth buying:

Metroid Prime 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Zak n Wiki
Kororinpa
Super Paper Mario
Endless Ocean*

I haven't even played Brawl or Zelda yet, but if they're up to par for the series then they're likely good stuff. I am wary of Kart because I much preferred Double Dash to MK DS and Wii version sounds like the DS flavor of Kart.

*It is a deep sea diving game. It is relaxing and you take it at your pleasure. Don't go in looking for action.

Sign up for Gamefly- So many games are worth just a rental it's not evenf unny. Also, get some lightgun shells (PERFECT SHOT!  :punch :punch :punch) because the one thing the Wii does freakishly well is lightgun games. Rent Resident Evil:Umbrella Chronicles and Ghost Squad. <3

Uh. Do you actually own a Guncon 3? I have one, and it's a cheap, plastic piece of shit. The thing comes with it's own sensor bars that works just like the Wii's, so I have no idea why you think it works better. I have had more calibration problems with Time Crisis 3 than Ghost Squad and House of the Dead 2+3 combined.

100 times better my ass.

Because simulating door-opening actions with a Wiimote is central to MP3's gameplay.

My Wii is my Mario playing machine. Also, Blades of Steel.

I never could get into the Metroid games. I tried MP1 when it first came out, but the whole thing seemed like a chore to me; it never felt fun. I didn't even give the other two the time of day, which from the looks of things was the way to go for me.

I found out Friday that Mario Kart was out. I had no idea. I was always a sucker for those games, but I guess the wheel is a failure and...I just really don't care about Mario Kart anymore.

But Blades of Steel is pretty great.

Mind you i never played MP2 but i liked MP3 plenty. Theres not as much backtracking shit as the first one. The controls work fine and it actually looks goood on an LCD vs something like Zelda.

It has his problems. Character designs (Non enemies, Non Samus) are shit.  But thats their art directors fault if anything.  The first space station probably tries to be too much halo

I don't know what it is about Prime 3, but I tend to pick it up and then put it down again for long periods of time.  I couldn't put Prime 1 down until I finished, but Prime 3 just doesn't hold my interest very well.  Still oodles better than Prime 2 though.

I liked Galaxy, but it wasn't "OMG best game ever".  Probably the best game on the system after RE4 though.

Paper Mario is as fuck-boring as always.  If it didn't float your boat in the past, this game won't change that.

I think Zack & Wiki might be awesome, I'd like to get it sometime.  NMH doesn't really interest me.

Metroid Prime has always sucked, but the first game was bearable

Paper Mario I played till just after the nerd boss and got the shits with all the story and talking. I would love a 2D/3D platform style game like this but SPM is shit.

Wii Play is garbage too, I know people who swear by Tanks which I think is the most worthless shit ever. I do like the cow jumping game though :shh

it's necessary to use that kind of motion sensing tech nowadays as older light guns are all based on the hertz flickering process of CRT tubes

I'd have probably gotten Time Crisis 4 already but you can only use one game with the Guncon 3 that comes with it, hopefully there will be more in the future, that's just one of the absolute coolest game peripherals ever

stores have ordered LOADS of Time Crisis 4 copies and many of them are still in stock and gather dust, I'm just waiting for the price to drop before I finally get my very own Guncon 3 :bow

The games I own:

Metal Slug Anthology - You can find this on eBay/Half/whatever for $20.  I don't even know if it is available new but at that price, you need to get it.  Includes Metal Slug 1-6.  A few different control setups.  The controls are the greatest flaw.  They are good, not great.  The worst involves shaking the controller like a tard to launch grenades.  I believe you can use the GC controller but I wouldn't buy a Wavebird for this game if you don't own one already.

Super Mario Galaxy - This game is 1000x better than that abortion known as Super Mario Sunshine.  It is like Nintendo realized how badly they fucked up with the franchise and came to redeem itself.  All is forgiven.  Not the best Mario game in the series but it is a very good one and has enough challenge to not make it a pushover like Mario 64.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - I got this because I drowned in the jizz of overactive GAFfers who claimed it to be "Game of the Forever."  That phrase is lame as fuck and so is Brawl.  If you want to buy Brawl, you better make sure you have roommates or friends or whatever that like the game.  It is essentially Melee with more shit.  If you hated Melee, keep away from Brawl.  It is not a complex fighter.  It is a mascot party game.  You need friends because the online mode is so broken that you might not find much luck in immediately connecting online and finding others to play without a laundry list of problems.  Nintendo claimed to want to wait until they got online gaming down pat before having it in their games.  They lied as always, lazy fucks.

Mario Kart Wii - I still think the DS version is much better.  The wheel sucks and is a novelty.  Once you get the golden wheel (race online a few times), the novelty becomes useless.  It takes the Brawl route in throwing in a bunch of characters.  Unlike Brawl, MKWii introduces a bunch of useless fucking characters and snubs several good ones that should have been used instead.  The new courses seem like MKDS rejects but not Double Dash terrible.  Online is decent and you can actually play a few games without Nintendo's shitty servers kicking you off.

I thought TP's intro hours were awesome personally

first you're introduced to everything in an enclosed space, then slowly it all opens up after you do the first dungeon. Slow yes, but I liked it

Going to have to go back and play it.

I'm around the five-hour mark, and couldn't get what everyone was raving about. In five hours of gameplay, I felt Phantom Hourglass blew Twilight Princess out of the water.

But if it does start opening up, then I guess I owe it to myself to finish the game. Bought the damn thing with the Wii ages ago, and it's one of the few games I have yet to finish...

I don't think I'll ever buy another Wii game. So far, I've found two good games (although TP has so far been mind-numbingly boring), one horrible one that the wife likes, and then the rest has been crap. Crappity crappy crap crap.

Going to have to go back and play it.

I like the sword play, and that's about as far as I've gotten. Now I'm a wolf. On the upside, the game isn't always horribly ugly. Although I wish they had never abandoned the legitimately beautiful style of TWW.

I liked TP quite a bit.  Part of it is probably due to the fact that I barely played Ocarina of Time and Celda:WW.

Unlike many Zelda fans, I didn't feel the game was more of the same.

I'd like to finish TP this summer but I haven't played it for 8 months.  It sucks that the game makes it so hard to remember what to do next.

I dunno, most Zelda games have terribly slow starting areas.  I would have thought most people are prepared for it by now.  I struggle to hate on TP's start too much though because meeting Midna is pants-wettingly awesome.

:heartbeat Midna :heartbeat

Majora's Mask is about the only recent Zelda game to buck the slow start trend.

I've played pretty much all Zeldas and TP had by far the best beginning, I don't get the hate. They introduce you to stuff you'll need later, at the same time establishing the kid characters and an incentive to get into the first dungeon. Beats getting a sword + shield and getting summoned immediately

Because of the painfully boring fetch quests and the patronizingly easy difficulty level? Besides, I don't know how you were emotionally invested in those little brats, if that's what you mean by incentive.

Majora's Mask has the best introductory sequence of any recent Zelda game. Motherfucker stole your means of transportation; that's what I call incentive!

Man, some of you are real pansies. I know for a fact I don't play as many games as some of you, yet even I was able to go to the ending of every Zelda (TP included).

Wow, Zelda is all sorts of wonderful now. Still, TWWs forest temple shits all over this version.
Oh yeah: this Zelda has the best Dungeon Music in the entire series.

Sorry dude, but you're off your rocker. TP has by far and away the most repetitive and dull music out of any Zelda title, ESPECIALLY the dungeons (and this includes 2D too).

Did you beat the Forest Temple, AA? Where are you know in TP. Post something here goddamnit.

I'm in the Goron Mines, which is alright, but again... Dragon's Roost beats the living shit out of this. This game would have been so much more awesome to look at if they hadn't abandoned the TWW style for this "realistic" crap. It really shoves the limitations of the Gamecube right in your face at every turn. At times, it looks beautiful, but when it's constantly countered with garbage views, it's hard to feel good about it.

Gameplay has been good, although I'm even more sick now of the constant interruptions, not to mention the horribly lame cutscenes. And I can't skip them either, imagine that. I'm still sort of waiting for the game to open up, so to speak.

Oh yeah, and the music is crap.

TP is pretty much OoT2. Don't expect any amazing, new things from it. The only new gimmick is the wolf thing and they fucked it.

I was just:

- longing for a new Zelda game
- smh from disgust at Wind Waker "dungeons" (pathetic)

And TP hit the spot in both of the above.

For me it is pretty much the best Zelda ever, even though I know and I admit that Wind Waker looked 10 times better.

Baloney! Wind Waker's first three dungeons (not counting that awful stealth dungeon) are better designed than any of Twilight Princess's dungeons. Admittedly, the tag-team dungeons' novelty wore off quickly (and became tiresome), so I will give the nod to Arbiter's Grounds, the Temple of Time, and the Sky Temple over them. But Jesus Christ the first three dungeons in TP were GOD AWFUL, especially the water temple.

Every once in a while I think to myself "Red Steel can't be as bad as I remember it was, i'm gonna try it out" only to stop playing after 10 minutes because the controls, graphics, and dialog are all so awful.  Good news is that I will finally finish it in about 5 years if I keep this up.

Bah. The Fire Temple was extremely meh, but the forest and water temple (aside from the boss fight) were pretty damn good. Granted, I think I would give Tower of the Gods the nod over Lakebed temple. Also, what was WW's first dungeon? Been ages since I played it..

I actually think Ocarina of Time probably has the one of the slowest starts of any Zelda game.  First time around it was probably OK, but when I've played the game again it's pretty damn boring until you get to Hyrule Field.

TP's start isn't too bad.  It's about on par with WW for me, but way behind MM's start which was pretty damn awesome.

I'm comparing OoT's starting village (Kokiri Forest I think it's called?) to Ordon Village in particular.  First time around was fine, but I find Kokiri Forest and the Deku tree a major chore to get through when starting the game again.

Ordon isn't too bad, and thankfully it's not too long before Link gets pulled into the Twilight which I like.

If we are only matching up exclusive games here, then I would say that the Wii does only really have Mario Galaxy as it's one great title.  I would also argue that Link's Crossbow Training is another one of the top tier Wii games out there.  And other games like Smash Bros, No More Heroes, Metroid Prime 3, Zack and Wiki, Boom Blocks, and Geo Wars Galaxy are all good.

I just went to see when Fatal Frame 4 comes out, but it's only TBA 2008.  So it's probably 2009.

Which means nothing more is coming out for Wii this year after all. :(

I'm hardly going to bored with the totally insane amount of 360 titles coming until Christmas, but it'd be nice to have something to play on the Wii.  I might get Wario but I can't shake the feeling it should be Wiiware.

:bow Kororinpa 2 :bow2

Wii still has better games than PS3, which has MGS, Ratchet and Clank, a couple second-tier FPSes, a couple of good downloadable games, and multiplatform games that pale in comparison to the 360.

Buy a 360, or a hex based strategy game on the pc to celebrate.

I was thinking about the 360 deal, but with new versions looming in the distance, that might have to wait.

Dude, you wait this long and then sell it just before the one good Wii game for the rest of the year comes out?  Zany!

:bow Fatal Frame 4 :bow2

Eh, I disliked the one Fatal Frame I played. Ghost horror doesn't bite on me.

You should consider being a stand up comedian cause that is full of lulz.

I think it's fair to say both the PS3 and Wii are pretty laughable in terms of library.  Which one is more laughable comes down to taste somewhat.

If someone only has a PS3, then the PS3 wins because of the huge list of great third party titles to play.

Probably.  I'd prefer not to place myself in such a situation.

There are slim pickings in terms of great exclusives for the PS3, that much is true. There is, however, a few good to very good games on it, and the exclusives are going to see a major wave over the next year (although a few of the high profile ones, like Killzone 2, are of unknown quality). The Wii, in contrast, has shit for a library overall, with a few shining exceptions, and there are few signs that things are going to get better. Which would be one of the main reasons I'm selling the system.

Hell, even the 360 is quite slim on great exclusives. Unless you like Japanese RPGS.

What a fucked up generation. Oh well, at least the Wii is out of the house.  :hyper

I'll never understand why people buy consoles, and then sell them in no time at all. It's especially annoying with those certain people that buy the same console later on.

At least you got all your money back and some extra, but seriously what the hell.

As if there were other options. I didn't know anyone with a Wii console that I could borrow, so buying one was the only way to actually get some hands-on time with it. I should have known better than to buy another Nintendo console after the barnacle that was the Gamecube, but the lure of Super Mario Galaxy was quite strong. Now SMG is done, so the console can take a hike. And with no money lost.

Which consoles and handhelds do you own now, ducky?

Do they still rent consoles? I would think that would be a better way of dealing with the Wii.  Rent it once a year when there is that one fun game, play it, then take it back.

I remember I rented a PS1 when it first came out and played the hell out of it for a week before having to give it away.  This was back when I couldn't buy every system at launch.  Even the N64, which was my main system for a while, was bought near Christmas (I'm muslim, but we celebrate christmas.  Rock on.) and that was the only reason I was allowed to buy it.  First system I bought at launch was the Dreamcast.  I remember being there the night of its release and destroying people at Soul Calibur.  It was sad since I was a young teenager then, and these guys were older and clearly didn't have the internal fortitude to match up with me.

I just remembered that I payed $70 for a used copy of Wave Race.  Totally worth it.

Meh, maybe it’s just me, but when I buy a console, I see that as an investment. Even if there may not be too many great games, a few of them will come down the line, and I also like to go back and play the same games later on. You were fortunate that you got your money back, and that’s something that I would do as well since that at least meant I could buy it at a cheaper price later, but from the way you sounded,  it seemed like you wouldn’t have mind selling at a loss.

A poor investment, in my opinion. There is nothing on the horizon that looks even moderately appealing, and the system does by design not have the types of games that offer nearly infinite replay value, so why not sell it while the initial investment can still be mostly recouped? I can just buy another one in two years, when the next genuinely good games out for the system, and by that time the system will likely be a good deal cheaper than it is now.

Do they still rent consoles? I would think that would be a better way of dealing with the Wii.  Rent it once a year when there is that one fun game, play it, then take it back.

Even if I could have rented it, that would have cost me more. I got three months out of it, and lost nothing. Not a bad deal.

PS3. And a good PC. I'll get a 360 this Fall, but I'm waiting for the new model, and the dashboard update.

No one even knows what's 'on the horizon'.  Part of the few joys left untouched in gaming is waking up tomorrow and hearing about something for the first time I want to play.

Personally, this is the reason I own multiple systems.  Even if one doesn't get much in terms of steady stream of releases, one of the others will.

I don't think there are many people out there who play 24/7 and have to have every system giving them a constant bombardment.

No one even knows what's 'on the horizon'.

I know quite a bit about what's coming up in the next year for the other systems. Nintendo, on the other hand, has shown nothing of interest. And again, if the next worthwhile game comes after the system reaches a lower price point, why in the hell would I hold on to the thing, especially when I'm not taking a loss on selling it? It's not like it has some secondary or tertiary media function to keep it going between waves of games.

Yes, I can read the Internet too.   :P  But even then you aren't going to have a release schedule for the rest of the generation.  Something always comes up.

But I completely agree about reaching the point when games come after the price drops... but that's usually solved by not buying it in the first place, for me, until I have enough to play.

It's the reason I don't yet have a PS3, or didn't buy a 360 for the first six or seven months, or didn't buy myself a Wii (but was a gift, so that works).

I'm like Oblivion I guess; once I've made the commitment I might as well hang on to it.
