She'll probably suspend her campaign, not end it.

Basically leaves the option of the convention going with her should the obama boat capsize for whatever reason

actually, this is pretty clever

it's obvious she can't get the nomination now. so now she's openly talking about how she's "willing" to take the VP slot.

it looks like a "concession" but really this is just her continuing to play hardball, only with lower stakes. Now, when Obama picks someone not-Hillary to be his VP, Hillary looks snubbed. Even though the winner almost never picks the #2 as their VP, Hillary's redefining Obama's expected behavior.

SO EVIL

Saying you're open to a VP pick is not "evil;" lets dispense the histrionics--both campaigns have made faint glances in that direction for a while now.
Title: Re: PRIMARIES: THE FINAL SHOWDOWN

I think the biggest problem with an obama hillary ticket right now is that the GOP seems happy playing back all f Hillary's negative crap and shoving it in the dems faces. She laid a lot of the groundwork for them, and theyve admitted theyre happy to capitalize on it.

Title: Re: PRIMARIES: THE FINAL SHOWDOWN
Post by: APF on June 03, 2008, 05:40:11 PM
Both Dems do very well against McCain; I think your concerns are unnecessary, not to mention a bit pollyanish: as though, they're not going to use anyone else's negatives but hers.  The real problem (if there is one) IMO is the relish with which both sides of the Dem campaign scorched the earth when the ultimate conclusion of their contest was a near certainty for months.  Short-sighted IMO.

McCain should play really dirty and go to Red States with the motto, "Obama: He's not like US.  You wouldn't vote for one of THEM, would you?  Would you let you daughter marry one of THEM?"

And when the Democrats cry racism, he would respond with a horribly insulted face that shouted back, "WHAT?  HOW DARE YOU - I AM TALKING ABOUT WHITE COLLAR LIBERALS!  NOW THEY'RE PLAYING THE RACE CARD!  IS THERE NO HONOR!?  SMH."

Not just a Democrat, but the one who got the nomination.  Political operatives always like to pretend that the loser of the opponents' primary was the best possible option.  Note McCain saying nice things about Hillary (I don't expect too much more of that until she's ruled out as VP).

Howard Dean said a few weeks ago that Romney would have been the strongest Republican candidate and apparently kept a straight face doing so.

David Brooks used to write Mr. David Obama over and over (http://select.nytimes.com/2006/10/19/opinion/19brooks.html?_r=1&oref=slogin) in his spiral notebook until Obama became the favorite.  Then suddenly it's OMG liberal (http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/02/20/opinion/edbrooks.php).

It's too bad, cause I'll bet Brooks had his The Democrats Should Have Chosen Barack column all but written out in his head.  "Given the opportunity to choose a new type of politics, Democratic primary voters instead retreated to the safety and comfort of the same tired formula..."

So your admitting that affirmative action is only used to combat racism?

I thought the argument for affirmative action was that there was unequal opportunity for minorities. But if one becomes president than it proves that we dont need it.

This is seriously the plot of a great political thriller.  Hotly contested primary ends in first African-American nominee, but scorned and bitter political rival sets up an easy assassination on account of relatively prevalent racism still alive in the country.  Can anyone stop this diabolical plot?

anyway, why should Hillary concede tonight. Let her savor this last victory, face reality, then make the right decision. The race is over

The thing I didn't like: her "i have 18mil votes lol" tone. She feels fucking entitled to the VP spot, just as she felt entitled to the presidency. I'd imagine the RFK comment killed her VP chances. Plus today the RNC started peddling the video of Hillary insinuating her and McCain were qualified for the presidency, while Obama wasn't. That doesn't help your VP chances

I don't think so.  I think the threats of Hillary supporters jumping ship to McCain or withholding their vote are a) overblown and b) irrelevant when the general election hits.  Yeah, she has around half of the popular vote in the primaries, but that's not taking the following into accounts:

1. Registered republicans that will vote for Obama (like me!)
2. Independents
3. Lazy kids that don't vote in primaries because they don't know what they are
4. America isn't that dumb
5. If we're that dumb, we deserve four more years of GOP leadership

I recognize the higher than normal voter turnout amongst the youth for a primary, but it's still not the majority of youth voters or anything.  The base is definitely energized, but your average twenty-something probably did not vote in the primary.

1. Registered republicans that will vote for Obama (like me!)

I don't mean to single you out. But, as a registered Republican, could you rationalize your support for Obama given the fact that the Democrats will control both the House and Senate and have a very good shot at winning fillibuster-proof margins?

Obama would be a lot more appealing if Congress had some balance. But, there's no chance for me supporting him as it stands now.

Furthermore, MAF, more than 22 million Democratic primary voters were over the age of 45 this year.  That accounts for the majority of the primary votes.  The youth is definitely surging, but a lot are still not voting.

siamesedreamer... Uh, it's pretty easy - I don't like McCain and the Republican leadership in Congress.  It was just a matter of whether or not I wanted to vote for a Democratic candidate.  I applaud Obama's willingness to actually pick platforms based on rationale and less on poll numbers.

And seriously, if a third-party candidate had a likely shot at winning in the general election, that I would sincerely look at that candidate.  But this is a two horse race and will likely be a lot closer than folks realize, especially when that Jesus-loving religious right wakes up tomorrow to see that BLACK MAN is actually running for President.  I don't want to waste a single vote and see McCain go into office, only to have flashbacks and nuke Iran in an episode.

My reputation kinda proceeds me, so I'm trying to be as non-political as possible on this board. I've finally come to the conclusion that argubating politics on the internet is a complete waste of time and only puts me in a horrible mood - just like playing Halo 3.

The Rome-type shit you speak of is all about economics, our foreign policy is a minor part. And contrary to what you say social reforms are almost never "reigned in."

No, it's not.

And social reforms are easier to correct or change than trying to figure out what to do with thousands of our troops stuck in a devastated country that was obliterated by yours truly, as we funnel money into the military-industrial complex for the sole benefit of mostly rich Republicans.

It's not a matter of punishing the party - it's a matter of saving the fucking country.

You're warping my words.  It's easier to reign in social reforms than to destabilize other countries, funnel money and resources that need to be spent here on said countries, continue to rip apart an entire region with horrible foreign policy, etc.

Social reforms can be thrown out, changed or reigned in.  We can correct those.  Why worry about social reforms when we are literally plummeting into the third circle of hell?

Suppose there are candidates you agree with 90%, 70%, and 20%

But suppose that supporting the 90% candidate will cause the 70% candidate to lose to the 20% candidate.

Is "supporting what you believe in" worth it, in that case?

I work with low income families. I can't tell you the number of times kids tell me about how their phones and electricity are turned off because their parents couldn't pay the bills, or how they had to move in with an auntie or grandma because they got evicted. These are also the same kids whose only meals sometimes are the free breakfast and lunch they get during the day at school. A lot of these kiddos hate going home, and would rather stay at school.

If a person is budgeting as tightly and carefully as you are and living paycheck to paycheck, and has to commute to work, spending an extra $100 a month on gas is instantly putting them in the red. Never mind smaller boxes of cereal, more expensive milk and eggs and rice, on and on and on.

it costs more to live and people are making less, you can't just do magic math to fix this. And if you're not a single white male you can't always just move to a smaller apartment or to a shittier area or whatever and just pack up your shit and go.

First, we need to take into account inflation. The result of the Federal Reserve printing too much money is a loss of purchasing power of the dollar: something that cost $1.00 in 1950 would cost about $8.78 today. As for gas prices, in 1950 the price of gas was approximately 30 cents per gallon. Adjusted for inflation, a gallon of gas today should cost right at $2.64, assuming taxes are the same.

But taxes have not stayed the same. The tax per gallon of gas in 1950 was roughly 1.5% of the price. Today, federal, state, and local taxes account for approximately 20% of gas's posted price. Taking inflation and the increase in taxes into account (assuming no change in supply or demand) the same gallon of gas that cost 30 cents in 1950 should today cost about $3.13.

Because when compared to Iraq, the cost social programs have way more to do with our problems:

Ignoring that social programs have a tangible benefit for millions of Americans

Never said they didn't. In fact, it can be argued that virtually all of the money paid out to SS recipients is pumped right back into the economy.

But, the fact of the matter is that the numbers don't add up and we are in serious trouble when it comes to paying for these programs. To say that they can be easily reformed like Willco is suggesting ignores reality. They're the most politically untouchable programs ever. This is easily seen by the fact that Medicare goes bankrupt in nine short years (2017) and nobody on either side wants to touch it. Its not hard to imagine what would happen if 300 million+ people are given "free" healthcare/insurance and then are told they have to give it up/have their benefits slashed.

So what you're saying is Barack Obama is going to totally ignore the Social Security problem that has been an open talking point for at least a couple of years now and he's already spoken openly about several times in this campaign?

I don't see how the McCain alternative is going to solve anything you just said but I do see how he will bumble around like an asshole and pump huge amounts of money into a war we're always 6 more months away from winning.

That is a good point about Social Security sd, but it doesn't change the fact that many people are pretty wary of Republicans (and Democrats to an extent) calling for cuts in the social benefits programs.

As far as noone wanting to 'fix' Medicare...old people vote....that shit will never be touched. (nothing you don't already know)

So what you're saying is Barack Obama is going to totally ignore the Social Security problem...

I don't know what he's going to do. But, the idea that he'll be working with a huge DEM majority in Congress gives me great pause. Not even Reagan had that luxury with the Greenspan Commission.

Its not that I don't trust Obama. I just don't trust Pelosi and her wing of the party. My hope is that Obama will end up being more of a centrist like Clinton. I'm not holding my breath though. There's more of a chance than not that he'll overplay his hand.

Here's the thing about SS and Medicare.

We're gonna have a lot of old people in the future.  They will have material and medical needs.  Dismantling the safety net doesn't change this; it just changes how we pay for it as a society.

If you talk about the need to severely cut those programs, you need to explain why it's okay for seniors to have a much lower standard of living and medical care and/or why it's fair for the burden of senior care to be shifted to their adult children.

PS No "ZOMG bankrupt in 20XX" stuff when by that standard the discretionary/military part of the budget is already "bankrupt".
Title: Re: PRIMARIES: THE FINAL SHOWDOWN
Post by: siamesedreamer on June 04, 2008, 01:32:33 AM
The burden of the boomer Medicare costs has already been shifted to their adult children, adolescent grand children, unborn great grand children, and unborn great great grand children.

OTOH future generations are richer by almost every economic metric and we all get to enjoy the infrastructure that was built and paid for before our own adulthoods.

The point remains:  This isn't a SS/Medicare crunch.  This is a sick old person crunch and paying for it through private markets rather than the government does NOTHING to take the economic strain off our society.  So what's there to bitch about?

Because they are old bastards and have earned their seats in their lower tar pits by the sins of their lives. If it was up to me, I'd re-introduce the ättestupa system. I'd also make sure that the government got in on the military contracting deal on an official level, so that we could on some level go back to good old fashioned blatant pillaging, to follow the razing. Books for war!

Since February I've been saying "President McCain, President John McCain" out loud to get used to the idea.

I figure a Democratic Congress would mostly keep him in check and even though I don't think terribly much of him as a politician, I won't have that depressing "How can we elect this asshole!?" feeling I had in 2004.  Plus I suspect whoever wins won't be able to stop some real economic pain over the next couple years.

I kind of worry about him appointing Supreme Court justices, though.  A few of the current ones make him look young.

Who of distinction calls Obama the most liberal politician ever?  No one?  Then what's your point?  You have none?  Then why respond with this?  Because you like being contrary without actually saying anything?  Well I can certainly appreciate that.

There was this awesome TV show on Japanese TV last night where some university professor had used some NASA material to clean up the rivers in China. Iran is a serious threat.  I've said for awhile that Bush has invaded the wrong country.  Iraq was an isolated dictatorship that obviously posed no real threat.  That said, we don't have the resources or the international goodwill to launch a military campaign against Tehran, and I highly doubt Obama is interested in doing so.

Iran also has a pretty progressive youth movement, so I think most are hoping that they change their own country.

Or the fact that they've tried to destablize the entire region and delcare war on Western interests by proxy?  Who do you think funded Hezbollah, which led to to the total destabilization of Lebanon after they captured those two Israeli soldiers (albeit Israel totally overreacted with a crazy amount of force)?  Who do you think is trying to destablize Iraq even more than it already is, in attempt to have control over most of the Middle East?  Iran is becoming a scary power broker.

I'm not saying we should invade Iran, I was more or less joking that Iraq was the wrong country to invade, if you were to invade any at all.  I personally think they we can solve a lot of issues with Iran with firm diplomacy - keeping open channels of communication, but not bending to demands.  There is a progressive youth movement there.

There is a legitimate concern of them attaining nuclear capabilities, especially since they are gradually consuming control over the region and a conflict with Israel seems inevitable.  But they're not at the point that we need to invade.

Indeed.  We should have invaded the home country of 15 of the 9/11 hijackers:  SAUDI FUCKING ARABIA.

You deny that Iran funds Hezbollah and helped destabilize the country?  It all went well for Iran.  Lebanon was on our side, for the most part.  Now it's more pro-Hezbollah than ever before.

Eh, Iran doesn't have any plans for regional domination.  It wants to be a player but it's never started a war and it has a historic identification with its own borders.

What it generally does do is screw with American and Israeli interests, especially in places without a completely functioning state (south Lebanon, Iraq, the occupied territories).  I wouldn't say it's working to destabilize Iraq.  It's doing the same thing as the US:  trying to create a stable equilibrium that favors their own interests.

There's no sane reason why Israel and Iran should have a direct conflict in the next couple decades.  It would be a losing proposition for everyone involved.  The only way I could see that happening is through a series of escalating miscalculations and failures in communication.

But that's the case for most wars and it hasn't stopped them.

I'm not quite sure what Hezbollah thought Israel would do when they kidnapped their soldiers, y'know, since the country has a long standing history of being peacefully diplomatic with hostile forc- OH WAIT.  The whole thing was a manipulation.

Mandark, I generally agree that Iran doesn't want regional domination, and as I stated, is working towards becoming a power broker.  But quite frankly, if we're dealing with the same type of people in power a few decades from now, when Iran pretty much controls the interests of the Middle East, are we that safe?

I'm not quite sure why you don't think a conflict is inevitable.  Its leader pretty much wants to wipe Israel off the map and so far, has been playing its cards quite well in the region.  Yeah, they're just a cub right now, but soon they'll be a tiger.

I feel it's important to address the threat, but not necessarily with bullets.  We shouldn't downplay the long term threat, though.

The "right" country [/ies] to invade after 9/11 wasn't Iran or Saudi Arabia.  It was Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Also, if Iran's interests and the US' interests (and / or those of our allies) are in conflict, that's a conflict.  Since the way those power struggles are playing out in Iraq is through armed conflict, and not solely diplomatic wrangling, how is that not a direct conflict?  I'm not sure why saying Iran is working in its interest should somehow pacify the reality that this work is being done via violent means against the US.

Willco: I don't think conflict is inevitable because I don't think Israel and Iran have permanent, irreconcilable interests that will lead to war.

Iran basically wants to maintainWestphalian sovereignty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westphalian_sovereignty), have a say in regional decisions that affect it, and expand its economy. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=GDfToFcJ2J4&fmt=18)  Essentially the same as Israel.

The danger is in a cycle of suspicion, where each side thinks the other is rigidly hostile and bent on the destruction of the other.  It's not true but it can easily turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Besides which Iran just doesn't have the economic or industrial capacity to find themselves pulling the strings in the ME 20 years from now.

Some fundies like Tom Delay would candidly say to reporters that they support Israel because of something in the bible about "jews get holy land=apocalypse".  I think we can all agree that Israel needs to be kept in check but that it's not going anywhere.

As you mentioned, about 2/3 of the country is under 25.  I'm guessing that's because a lot of the older generation was killed in the Iran-Iraq war so the country probably isn't interested in starting a war (not that they ever did start a war).

Also, ahmadinejad said "wiped off the page of time" in Farsi.  There's no other way to translate that.  However, some Iranians say that it ahmadinejad's to scale back diplomacy with other countries in order to focus on corruption in the government.  The problem is that this caused much higher food costs and now the majority of the country doesn't like him.

So unless relatively peaceful countries decide to commit suicide for an unpopular president's mistranslation, Israel probably won't be blown up.  Repeat that many times.

The Clinton drama has competed for attention, one last time, with the scope and meaning of Obama's win. Now, it's Obama's party, and he will finally have the spotlight to himself.

Roll Call reports that during a Senate vote today, Sen. Barack Obama "dragged" Sen. Joe Lieberman "by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation."

"While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating."

"Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances."

"Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange. Afterwards, Obama smiled and pointed up at reporters peering over the edge of the press gallery for a better glimpse of their interaction."

Based on his tone and THE WORDS HE USED, he was more likely implying that the creation of Israel was wrong but not that invading Israel is right.  I will not trust anything you say on this subject until you learn Farsi.  I did so you have to too.

But seriously, Bush has recently shown that the fear-mongering it takes to get a country to go to an unprovoked war is really out of this guy's league.  He's unpopular and he's the president of Iran, so he hasn't got much power in the country.  If he had a lot more power, the means to start a war, the PEOPLE to start a war, and if he was constantly fear-mongering every single day, then I'd be worried about a war between Iran and Israel.

However today, blackouts are very common in Iran so building a nuclear power facility that they are open to the rest of the world about doesn't sound like a bad idea.

One is active and forceful, the other ("vanish from the page of time") is passive.  But really, quibbling over the translations of isolated idiomatic phrases that don't translate directly anyway doesn't get you much.  It's more fruitful to look at the context, and from the other examples he cited (the fall of the Soviet Union, the fall of the Pahlavis) it's clear he's not threatening genocide, but predicting the fall of a regime.  The whole "Ahmadinejad has been threatening to nuke Israel" line is nothing but incredibly tendentious propaganda.
