You can. Wrath of the Lich King is already out to download and there's already private servers to play it on.

I hope WAR will ass rape WOTLK and that Blizz will try to step up their game again. I love Blizz but there is no War in WoW and plenty of WAR in WAR.

Blizzard will keep breaking new ground and polishing their game like they have for TBC. I don't think that they'll ever really be too far behind the competition in the areas where WoW excels. Age of Conan and WAR are just taking the next logical step for the MMO market-after the huge explosion in the market due to WoW, they are starting the inevitable specialization trend to ruthlessly monopolize a niche in the market.

And yeah it's lich king release date I would imagine.

AoC isn't crap, but its not a WoW Killer. Im not sure Warhammer will either. Both AoC and War are working heavily in territory that doesn't interest 80% of WoW's subscription base.

The nice thing about MMORPGs, however, is that it doesnt take a large base to sustain the game for years, or make a sequel possible.

Its not Diablo III, its Iced Runes, a puzzle game involving runes and ice!

Every time I see death knight previews with the rune stuff they use I keep thinking how funny it would be if they could incorporate match-3 elements into the class.

"Match Three Frost Runes, Clear the pull of one mob!" . Chuzzle meets tanking!

I think War will do well. One of the biggest reasons I got into WoW was because I was very familiar with the franchise already. I played W2/3 religiously for a very long time, knew the races and characters etc. So I already had one foot into WoW before I even played it. Stuff like EO and FFXI doesn't interest me for many reasons like the art, but I'm also not familiar with the franchises. Warhammer is a huge, storied franchise that many people are familiar with. I bet many people who used to play the board game in high school are going to at least check out the mmo.

I gave AoC a shot, so I will give War a shot. Both AoC and War are from devs that have proven they belong as devs in the genre.

Diablo 3 will mark Blizzard's first foray into the casual gaming market. Can you spot the 10 differences in these two screenshots? Can you match all the runes before the timer runs out? How many skeletons are in this screenshot? Complete this slider puzzle in order to cast Diablo back into the abyss once again!

I'm betting my new widescreen monitor that it is the release date of WotLK, mostly because that would mean the announcement would coincide with the release of Arena Season 4 on WoW.

Or it could just be coincidence.

What model of monitor is that?  I might be willing to take that bet, depending on what i have to put up against it.

CSS links to pieces of a larger image, it seems.

This is the detective work that evidently let people figure out it was the purple walrus image initially.

It is if it's frozen over, and that might be what it takes to get a Diablo 3.

Fuckers tricked me with that stupid ice. HELL IS NOT COLD GODDAMNIT

Not according to ol Dante:

The Ninth Circle is ringed by classical and Biblical giants. The giants are standing either on, or on a ledge above, the ninth circle of Hell, and are visible from the waist up at the ninth circle of the Malebolge. The giant Antaeus lowers Dante and Virgil into the pit that forms the ninth circle of Hell. (Canto XXXI) Traitors, distinguished from the "merely" fraudulent in that their acts involve betraying one in a special relationship to the betrayer, are frozen in a lake of ice known as Cocytus. Each group of traitors is encased in ice to a different depth, ranging from only the waist down to complete immersion. The circle is divided into four concentric zones:

Round 1: Caïna, named for Cain, is home to traitors to their kindred. The souls here are immersed in the ice up to their necks. (Canto XXXII)
Round 2: Antenora is named for Antenor of Troy, who according to medieval tradition betrayed his city to the Greeks. Traitors to political entities, such as party, city, or country, are located here. Count Ugolino pauses from gnawing on the head of his rival Archbishop Ruggieri to describe how Ruggieri imprisoned and starved him and his children. The souls here are immersed at almost the same level as those in Caïna, except they are unable to bend their necks. (Cantos XXXII and XXXIII)
Round 3: Ptolomæa is probably named for Ptolemy, the captain of Jericho, who invited Simon Maccabaeus and his sons to a banquet and then killed them. Traitors to their guests are punished here. Fra Alberigo explains that sometimes a soul falls here before the time that Atropos (the Fate who cuts the thread of life) should send it. Their bodies on Earth are immediately possessed by a fiend. The souls here are immersed so much that only half of their faces are visible. As they cry, their tears freeze and seal their eyes shut- they are denied even the comfort of tears. (Canto XXXIII)
Round 4: Judecca, named for Judas the Iscariot, Biblical betrayer of Christ, is for traitors to their lords and benefactors. All of the sinners punished within are completely encapsulated in ice, distorted to all conceivable positions.

Satan is trapped in the frozen central zone in the Ninth Circle of Hell, Inferno, Canto 34.
Dante and Virgil, with no one to talk to, quickly move on to the center of hell. Condemned to the very center of hell for committing the ultimate sin (treachery against God) is Satan, who has three faces, one red, one black, and one a pale yellow, each having a mouth that chews on a prominent traitor. Satan himself is represented as a giant, terrifying beast, weeping tears from his six eyes, which mix with the traitors' blood sickeningly. He is waist deep in ice, and beats his six wings as if trying to escape, but the icy wind that emanates only further ensures his imprisonment (as well as that of the others in the ring). The sinners in the mouths of Satan are Brutus and Cassius in the left and right mouths, respectively, who were involved in the assassination of Julius Caesar (an act which, to Dante, represented the destruction of a unified Italy), and Judas Iscariot (the namesake of this zone) in the central, most vicious mouth, who betrayed Jesus. Judas is being administered the most horrifying torture of the three traitors, his head in the mouth of Lucifer, and his back being forever skinned by the claws of Lucifer. (Canto XXXIV) What is seen here is a perverted trinity. Satan is impotent, ignorant, and evil while God can be attributed as the opposite: all powerful, all knowing, and good. The two poets escape by climbing down the ragged fur of Lucifer, passing through the center of the earth, emerging in the other hemisphere just before dawn on Easter Sunday beneath a sky studded with stars.

:lol I almost half-hope that it turns out to be a huge hoax and at the end of this Blizzard goes "HAH we got you bitches good" so I can hear every PC gamer cry out across the internet in unison.

I would love to see Diablo 3, but I find myself being a lot less excited about this than I would have been 3 years ago, before WoW consumed me.

WAR will shit all over WoW and its shitty PvP.

From what I've seen of the beta, the PvP (sorry, RvR  :-X) looks depressingly vapid and slow-paced. Of course, it might be too soon to say. Still, Blizzard has had 4 years on Mythic to fine-tune PvP; I can't see them being able to close the gap anytime soon. Plus, with the level of competition arena is now reaching with the recent attention from MLG, things can only get better. The one thing Warhammer's PvP has going for it is the myriad of classes (careers  ::)), something arena in WoW suffers from.

Then again, I am a good bit biased.

Not going to lie, though. As far as graphics go, Conan and Warhammer both look wayyyyyy better. Hopefully WotLK steps it up a little.

I also want to punch Paul Barnett in the throat, by the way. He's like that 9 year old kid with ADD on the bus that doesn't shut up

Ir eally enjoyed my time with WoW, but now I am looking for something a bit different.  LorTO was kind of a step in the right direction with strong story elements and the like, but there were many FORCED group quests which were needed to advance the main plot along.  the issue was that it was quite difficult to find a full party in those early level ranges.  also, the crafting was really kind of horrible.

Conan, on the other hand does a lot of stuff right so I'm with it for now.

I'd LOVE to see Warhammer come out and do even greater things because I'm a fan of the original tabletop game, but I'm not really holding my breath too much at this point.

Not sure why you think its Arthas. The face match up shit is bullshit. Two diablo boxarts have matched up just as well. Hell doesnt have to be hot, as written by Dante, and there's some kind of claw thing in the lower right corner of the opening. The ridge above the eyes DOESNT exactly match Arthas helmet, so its not like he wore a special one for that. It most closely resembles Tassadar but like wtf would that even mean? The smiley rune is clearly there to throw people off the pentagram.

Someone also noted the smiley rune is next to the diablo rune.

I know there's a lot of focus on loot and mulitplayer with Diablo, but i hope the story is good, and no i don't know if the story is normally good in Diablo because i haven't played the previous ones.

I guess they'd rather make a Diablo for the WoW fans rather then the Diablo fans that have been waiting for years for this.

right, as if all 2 screenshots and 1 minute of gameplay has told us this much. :lol  edit: actually, if anything, I'm seeing some Titan Quest in there, but I like i've said, this is one area.  There'll be deep, hellish caves a plenty (or else I'll burn down blizzard.)

Blizzard is not dumb and don't need to cash in on WoW, especially considering Diablo II is still the king of action RPGs and is still played by tons of people.  they won't try to replicate WoW in Diablo 3.

if not, I'll eat crow in 5 years when this comes out.  save the post.

It just doesn't look like Diablo. If you showed me these screens, without me having any knowledge of Diablo 3 coming out, I'd think it was a new game by ex iron lore guys.

I agree somewhat (besides the red and blue potion parts.)  I have a feeling this game is going to be ridiculously huge though.  plus D1 and D2 were before day/night cycles and crazy lighting were all that viable in a huge game, so D3's environments will probably be more varied (instead of dark all the time.)

[Fugu_]: Game that focuses on co-op.
[Elzevir]: Video demonstrating skills

[Fugu_]: The video's making some pretty greusome noises, the witch doctor is going loco.

[Fugu_]: "Less spam and more death"
[Fugu_]: Refering to the amount of skills you'd have to use.
[Fugu_]: "Cooler monster design"
[Corni_]: they want the playeer to us emore ksills
[Fugu_]: They want to tone down the focus on potions.
[Corni_]: no focus on f1-f12
[Corni_]: easier system for swtiching to skills
[Fugu_]: They don't want it so that you can just ignore combat convention and just spam potions.
[-- kalmah has quit (Signed off)
[Fugu_]: Left-right interface gone in place of a WoW-esque hotbar.
[Fugu_]: In order to allow the player to use skills faster.
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: You can access skill directly from the hotbar, instead of the Function bars. You can also scroll between skills with the mouse-wheel
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: skills*
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: function keys* :P
[Fugu_]: Emphasis on making it so that you have to use more diverse skills to be able to get through the harder difficulties.
[Fugu_]: Previously the reaction of the player when overwhelmed was simply to use a potion.
[Fugu_]: Blizzard wants to make it so that the reaction in Diablo 3 is to use your skills.
[Corni]: but easier start of getting into the game
[Fugu_]: I'm still good.

[Fugu_]: Which feed are you on?
[TacticSiege]: "better gameplay, less carpral tunnel"

[Fugu_]: "We really needed a new health system"
[Corni]: 1k main
[Fugu_]: They tried a halo-esque health system.
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: New health system
[Fugu_]: But they ditched it because they didn't want players to leave combat.
[TacticSiege]: dont want to slow down pace a la drinking in WoW
[Fugu_]: Health system will complement fast-paced action game.
[Fugu_]: Health globes are items that you can run over that will heal you like potions in Diablo 2 except you don't have to pick them up.
[Fugu_]: You merely run over them.
[TacticSiege]: placement important in battle, health 'globes' encourage taking risks to survive
[Fugu_]: When you pick up a health globe, anyone near you will also be healed.
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: Co-op play is very integrated in the game
[Fugu_]: Talkin' about monsters now.
[Fugu_]: Diablo 3 is filled with monsters who get crushed in large numbers.
[Fugu_]: Wanted to create larger and more complex monsters.
[Fugu_]: Beserker - swings a large mace that does a lot of damage, but if he misses he gets stuck in the ground.
[Fugu_]: Skeletal shield barrier is slow but has a shield that blocks your shots
[Fugu_]: Mine's still fine, I'm watching the 400 though.

[TacticSiege]: skeletal shield bearer (can be seen on diablo 3 site), can knock his shield off
[Fugu_]: Monster groups will synergize with each other and will be compatible with each other, just like players.
[p0isonapple]: Shield barrier absorbs HUGE amounts of damage, but when shieldless, isn't tough.
[Fugu_]: Really wanted to make a better story
[Fugu_]: (talking about story now)
[Fugu_]: They didn't want the story to be on the off-hand like it is in WoW and such.
[TacticSiege]: opt in approach, you dont need to pay attention to it, but you can
[Fugu_]: Won't subject those who aren't interested in the story to it but want the story to be there for those who are.
[Fugu_]: Will be integrated with quest design.
[Fugu_]: NEw system called adventures.
[Fugu_]: Expansion on the randomness from Diablo 2 - allows them to place scripted event anywhere.
[Fugu_]: Such as an old abandoned house!
[Fugu_]: Could come across a clearing where some guys are summoning demons.
[Fugu_]: Basically spontaneous, randomized "quests".
[p0isonapple]: Wuushu, I have the entire thing in a Notepad Document to upload and email to you.
[Fugu_]: New conversation system (NPCs).
[Fugu_]: Characters actually talk as opposed to grunting occasionally.
[TacticSiege]: panel tomorrow to go more in depth on character 'voice'
[Fugu_]: Two more panels tomorrow that will go in-depth with the environment and NPCs.
[TacticSiege]: panel tomorrow to go more in depth on character 'voice'
[Fugu_]: Objective was to maintain feel of Diablo universe while bringing in deeper gameplay.
[p0isonapple]: Remaining true to Diablo, creating a fantastic Action RPG game, bringing deeper gameplay.
[Fugu_]: A lot of "really cool" features that they'll be announcing in the coming months.
[Fugu_]: It's question time~
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: P0isonapple, you have msg
* Wuushu[IncGamer gives voice to Corni_
[Fugu_]: So they're getting Q + A ready.
[Corni_]: soudn away
[Corni_]: but video
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: I got sound now
[Fugu_]: Typical group size?
[Fugu_]: "Can support a lot of players"
[Fugu_]: CAN
[Fugu_]: Smaller groups work better.
[Corni_]: soudn back
[Fugu_]: Haven't decided a final number.
[Corni_]: ~4-5
[Fugu_]: Will probably focus on 4-5.
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: They are not limited by the technical side
[Corni_]: increased inv size?
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: But from a gamplay POV, 4-5
[Fugu_]: Are you going to increase the inventory size?
[Corni_]: improvement to inv system
[-- Mah` (mah@Mah.users.quakenet.org) has left #Dii.net
[Fugu_]: Will make a lot of improvements to the inventory stem.
[Corni_]: easiert trade system
[Fugu_]: "Will make it easier for you to trade between YOUR characters and other players"
[Fugu_]: Inventory doesn't work exactly the same as Diablo 2.
[Fugu_]: It's no longer a grid, each item occupies one space.
[Fugu_]: Oh, this guy's asking the tough questions.
[p0isonapple]: Haha
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: love the accent on this guy
[Fugu_]: He's asking who they're trying to attract - Diablo 2 players, WoW players...
[[SC]Freelancer]: Target audience
[Fugu_]: "We want to make a game for Diablo players"
[Fugu_]: Don't worry about World of Warcraft players
[Fugu_]: There will be plenty of room for both.
[Fugu_]: He's talking about classes.
[Fugu_]: Will the seven classes be kept...?
[Corni]: will the 7 classes be keptn when you added new?
[Fugu_]: No plan to specifically carry them over.
[Fugu_]: Final number has not been nailed - IE, classes not finalized.
[Corni]: not exactly decided now
[-- moiselvus has quit (Read error: EOF from client)
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: They are "sort of" doing a fresh start with the classes
[Fugu_]: Not specifically trying to bring back the old classes.
[p0isonapple]: Will certain classes be using different power mechanics.
[Corni]: no specific plans now, but interested generally
[Fugu_]: Question was actually about rage a la Warrior WoW, answer is inconclusive.
[Fugu_]: Hardcore.
[Corni]: THAT accent is cool
[Fugu_]: HAHAHA, your deeds will be remembered.
[Corni]: sounds german
[Fugu_]: Eastern european for sure.
[Corni]: not actually decided
[Fugu_]: Haven't decided.
[p0isonapple]: Haha poor guy.
[Fugu_]: Don't see why they wouldn't.
[Corni]: he don't see why they wouldn't support
[Fugu_]: ^His words
[Corni]: probably will
[Fugu_]: His question's about loot.
[Corni]: and v+s lost

[Fugu_]: Any new loot system?
[Fugu_]: To ensure that loot is given evenly throughout the group
[Fugu_]: "That really sucked"
[p0isonapple]: How will loot be given evenly through the group compared to Diablo 2?
[Fugu_]: Spent a lot of time thinking the loot system.
[p0isonapple]: Loot is generated per character in the party.
[Fugu_]: Each player will see loot generated for them as opposed to a collective system.
[Fugu_]: So you won't be able to steal other player's loot because you won't see it.
[Fugu_]: Will you be able to respec?
[Fugu_]: Not talking about skill systems yet.

[p0isonapple]: Respec or change the skill tree, is it possible?
[Fugu_]: He thinks it's a bad idea not to allow someone to respec their character, no specifics.
[p0isonapple]: No specifics at the time.
[Fugu_]: They haven't even announced they're using a skill tree.
[Fugu_]: Witch doctor = spiritual successor to the necromancer?
[Fugu_]: ...No
[-- maltize has quit (Read error: EOF from client)
[Fugu_]: Thought about improving Necromancer, really cool class.
[Fugu_]: Witch Doctor would not prohibit making a necromancer.
[Fugu_]: How does the gear system differ from Diablo 2
[Fugu_]: A whole bunch of new features!
[p0isonapple]: Whole bunch of new features for items
[Fugu_]: Core system is not drastically changed.

[Fugu_]: One of the best things about Diablo 2 was how they handled items.
[Corni]: back on 1k stream
[Fugu_]: I'm on the 400 still, no problems thus far.
[Wuushu[IncGamer]: great
[Fugu_]: Features are not finalized regarding items.
[Corni]: overpowered bnet. what do you to prevent that?
[Corni]: cheats
[Corni]: no specifics
[Fugu_]: Yours is ahead of mine, it seems.
[p0isonapple]: How will you combat cheaters and over powered people on b.net?
[Corni]: huge focus on, they want to prevent it
[Fugu_]: NEw version of battle.net will be effective at stopping cheats.
[Corni]: same as for d2
[Fugu_]: One of their biggest focuses.
[p0isonapple]: New b.net has a huge focus on stopping cheaters.
[Fugu_]: Cow Level
[Corni]: or have secrets in?
[p0isonapple]: Oh, my bad.
[Corni]: yes, super secret stuff, that's a secret
[p0isonapple]: Perhaps secret penguin level
[Fugu_]: (THat was the quesiton asking guy, by the way - [09:24] [Fugu_]: Hahahahahaha.)
[p0isonapple]:
[Corni]: sp and mp are balanved??
[Fugu_]: Oh wow, didn't even think of that.

[Fugu_]: Some things can only be tackled in a large group
[Fugu_]: CAn everything be taclked by a single person"?
[Corni]: not planned
[Corni]: french
[Fugu_]: Game experience will be different for large players but anything a group can do one can do as well.
[Fugu_]: Wants to know what has been going on since Lord of Destruction that there's been no news.
[Fugu_]: "We've been working"
[p0isonapple]: Why was the gap so long between Lord of Destruction and Diablo 3.
[Fugu_]: WAnted to establish a game that they would think was worthy for the fans, this is how long it took them to be ready.
[Fugu_]: Will gender selection influence character attributes?
[Fugu_]: No.
[p0isonapple]: No differences between genders apart from visual appearance.
[Corni]: can system which runs wow run d3?
[Corni]: use of dx10?
[Corni]: supoort of very (broad) systems
[Fugu_]: Hasn't settled on system specs yet.
[Corni]: they want low sysreqs
[Corni]: no hiendgames
[Corni]: NO DX10!!!!
[Fugu_]: Not a super high end game.
[Corni]: french
[Fugu_]: Corni...
[Fugu_]: He said they wouldn't require it
[p0isonapple]: Doesn't require DirectX10, nothing about support for it however.
[p0isonapple]: Do you plan on creating a d3 map editor?
[p0isonapple]: No nailed specifics about it as yet.
[Corni]: not modfriendable
[Fugu_]: No nailed specifics about mod development.
[Fugu_]: But that's not true, Diablo 2 is very mod friendly...
[Corni]: no big focus for them but not decided yet
[p0isonapple]: Because of how random the game is, its hard to get user made content in.
[Corni]: in d2 were rw's will you keep them?
[Corni]: no coment
[Fugu_]: Hmmmmm...
[p0isonapple]: Will their be runewords in Diablo 3 like in Diablo 2?
[Fugu_]: No comment.
[Corni]: and closed

Uhh, everyone needs to watch GAMEPLAY VIDEO #2 instead of looking at screenshots.  Watch all 9 minutes.  The last ~4 minutes are incredible.  This absolutely looks like Diablo.  All the blood, gore and gibs are there.  The atmosphere is there.  The visuals look amazing.  It doesn't look anything like World of Warcraft.

Did you watch that huge boss fight at the end? Amazing... I loved how he crashed into the scene blowing up all the environment, and also how he died and exploded.

To play over Battle.net (which is a must, imo), you need a CD key.  Even in D2, there's no CD key generator or anything like that after all these years because Blizzard bans CD keys.  You will definitely have to buy it to play over Battle.net.

For some reasons, I loved the original and played it to death; but I could never get into D2. It just felt odd to me; simply because I had played so much D1. I won't be playing D3 but I can understand why the fans are going apeshit, the game looks phenom.

The movements of the barbarian are real nice and the less-static areas are nice, even if it looked to play exactly the same with them. They did use some WoW stuff, the first boss is basically Stitches from duskwood, but lets see outside of a crypt area more.

Main concern was that the Witch Doctor just looked like a variation on a Necromancer. I want truly new classes, new ideas, etc.

No. You can setup a game with a password, so only EB can join.

You can also do this to keep people from joining you so you can level a ladder character alone. I can't remember if you can limit the amount of players that can join :(

Is anyone else dumbfounded how tight they manage to keep the lid on this shit? I remember shortly after them announcing SC2 last year it was mentioned that they had started development on that way back in 2003. That whole time and no one even leaked so much as a screenshot?

• Group loot. When a boss was killed in the old games, the player with the fastest connection would typically grab the loot first. However, in “Diablo III,” the loot will generate and drop for each player.

Good news about the big focus on cheats and hacks.

Duping and hacks completely destroyed D2 from a competitive standpoint.  I'll admit, I used a maphack but that's a minor hack compared to what else is out there (gmod, which gives you all the breakpoints for free, pickit which automatically picks up drops before anyone else can, and many more).

Duping was just terrible.  It destroyed the economy.  I remember having an account full of high runes... ridiculous.

Interview with Jay Wilson (who was the lead designer of Dawn of War) (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/29/joystiq-chats-with-jay-wilson-on-diablo-3/)

The barbarian in D3 is the same one in D2!  :o

Group Loot sounds like the best way to deal with super rare loot where pointing and clicking on the items as quick as possible is a game aspect in itself. I'm happy to hear that groups won't be at odds in that regard in D3.

Do you have any plans for Diablo on consoles?
We don't have any plans.

Are there an plans for mobile or any other platforms, or is it purely PC/Mac?
Right now we're just focused on PC/Mac. I believe we've got people who are focused on mobile stuff and I'm sure we're going to be having conversations with them on some point on what we can do, but in terms of taking Diablo 3 as a game to mobile ... I doubt it.
Suck it down, console looooooooooooosers.

Maybe a rolling system or something. The whole quicker reflex shit is dumb. I actually wouldn't mind rolling on a Rare piece of loot. Its true that Group Loot will probably take away from the rarity of all rare items since whole groups can acquire them.

Group loot sucks. I got it first, too fucking bad for the rest of you. Click faster or stop playing.

Getting to the loot that you helped win shouldn't itself be a game.

Amen. It promotes better teamwork and you won't just sit there waiting for the regular loot stealer to get the last blow for a change.

Maybe the loot will be random for everyone.

that would be interesting, but there'd be a lot of crybabies when someone gets a nice item and the rest get shit. unless they give out random rare items.

Loot will probably be like guild wars, where drops are automatically assigned to players and only those players can click on it and receive it. Sort of a constant hidden greed roll.

Diablo III looks really cool.  Even a non-PC gamer such as myself is interested!   :o

I don't suppose this game will run on a MacBook, will it?  I know WoW works great...

i know blizz is dedicated to low end PCs, which is fine, but I really hope their new engine scales well to the high-midddle range cards.

those screens look technically lowgrade so far

and yes, i saw all the vids in HD, my opnion still stands
