Title: Nerdlinger movie fantasies
Post by: Cormacaroni on July 18, 2008, 02:43:03 AM
The tiny sparks of hope engendered in me by the Watchmen trailer/hype started me thinking about what other geek nonsense from my youth could potentially be filmable in the current nerdlinger-friendly Hollywood environment.

My #1 choice would probably be Dan Simmons' Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion' books. Done right, this could be the space opera to end all space opera.  It has a fantastic and visually arresting antagonist in the form of the Shrike. It has space battles, lasers, kinky sex and mystery galore. It has tech fantasy on an epic scale (Martin Silenus' house that spans multiple worlds etc), and literary pretension in spades (the poet John Keats is a key character, and the whole thing is structured like Chaucer's Canterbury Tales).

Of course, it's all absurdly complex and self-indulgent and too damn long. The scale is far beyond what cineplex hordes could digest. But still. I'd love to see it done right, in all its bizarre glory.

What about you lot then?

Like I said, Sandman, buuuut:

Quote
Throughout the late 1990s, a movie adaptation of the comic was periodically planned by Warner Brothers, parent company of DC Comics. Roger Avary was originally attached to direct after the success of Pulp Fiction, collaborating with Pirates of the Caribbean screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio in 1996 on a revision of their first script draft, which merged the Preludes and Nocturnes storyline with that of The Doll's House. Avary intended the film to be in part visually inspired by animator Jan Švankmajer's work. Avary was fired after disagreements over the creative direction with executive producer Jon Peters, best known for Batman (1989) and Superman Lives.

It looks like Sandman dodged a bunch of bullets of terribleness, there.

Though i'm not sure anyone could do it.

Morrison is working on this, isn't he? With Disney I think. As a computer-rendered thing...

Guillermo Del Toro directing At the Mountains of Madness. And I want this to be depicted on screen:

Quote
Another race--a land race of beings shaped like octopi and probably corresponding to the fabulous pre-human spawn of Cthulhu--soon began filtering down from cosmic infinity and precipitated a monstrous war which for a time drove the Old Ones wholly back to the sea.

fuck off really?  i think the only way it could have the same impact is if they used real animals but then, how?  As long as they don't give it comic relief I am still on board, tentatively.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We3#Movie_adaptation

'New Line Cinema has optioned We3 as a movie project. Morrison is attached as screenwriter and completed the script in 2006, while Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Rick Benattar are attached as producers. The film is currently in development. If the film is made, the cybernetic animals would be completely computer-generated. '

Now that's more like it. And this one actually has a passing chance of coming to fruition, since he's done a lot of work on it already. Got anything even further out? Dig deep into your nerd lore!
