The tiny sparks of hope engendered in me by the Watchmen trailer/hype started me thinking about what other geek nonsense from my youth could potentially be filmable in the current nerdlinger-friendly Hollywood environment.
My #1 choice would probably be Dan Simmons' Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion' books. Done right, this could be the space opera to end all space opera. It has a fantastic and visually arresting antagonist in the form of the Shrike. It has space battles, lasers, kinky sex and mystery galore. It has tech fantasy on an epic scale (Martin Silenus' house that spans multiple worlds etc), and literary pretension in spades (the poet John Keats is a key character, and the whole thing is structured like Chaucer's Canterbury Tales).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperion_CantosOf course, it's all absurdly complex and self-indulgent and too damn long. The scale is far beyond what cineplex hordes could digest. But still. I'd love to see it done right, in all its bizarre glory.
What about you lot then?
