Title: THE SOUL STILL BURNS
Post by: abrader on July 29, 2008, 10:20:06 AM
Since Soul Caliber IV is serious business - we needed a thread.

Who is picking up their copy today? Gamestop has them RIGHT NOW.

I am stuck here for a bit waiting on a contractor to give me an estimate for new kitchen tile....

I hope I can sneak out and get mine before lunch.

Anyone played it yet?

It's in the mail from Gamerang. I liked SC2, I could see myself sinking some time into this.

I had it shipped from GameFly yesterday. I dunnoo.....I loved SC1 and 2 but I don't think Namco has it in them anymore and SC4 looks like a broken, unbalanced fanservice animess.

coming from gamefly.  i expect it to be trash, just like the past couple of games.  i'm just looking forward to the character creator, really.

I wants it, I WANTS IT!!

But I have to wait until thursday to get it.   :'(  Might trade in GTA IV so then I can double dip and get it on both platforms, cuz I'm a fucking addict.  Haven't finished it yet, but I get the feeling I never will, nor will I care once Saints Row 2 is out.

I'm picking it up later today.  Gotta dust off my VSHG for this.  I actually intended to switch the square gate for a circle or octagon one at one point, but I never got around to it.  I also hope my hard drive comes in the mail so I can make the swap before playing SC4.  I already backed up my PS3 drive and everything.

I'm gonna try to pick it up later. I didn't preorder, so hopefully places other than gamestop are selling it today. I don't want to risk the "if you didn't preorder we don't have any more copies of this huge blockbuster game left" spiel.  ::)

Post by: dark1x on July 29, 2008, 01:07:32 PM
I've already picked it up.  It's been a while since I've played Soul Calibur.  I used to be really hardcore into the game (going to tournaments and such), though I was never really a GREAT player or anything.  I did enjoy it, though.  I still know a few people who love the series so I should have some folks to play with plus I've been wanting another now-gen fighter.  VF5 didn't really do it for me (like VF4 before it) as I know very few people who would really give it a shot and the single player options aren't all that hot.

I picked up the PS3 version as I just prefer the controller (though I'm going to try one of my sticks just to see if it works using one of those PS2-USB adapters).

picked it up it before lunch

it's pretty cool, graphics are great

not much available in character creation to start with, guess you have to slog through all the sp modes to get the goods

i made one character, and played through story mode (really short) with vader and two other characters

i just had the good idea of making sure i install it now - so later when i get done working I dont gotta wait 15 minutes...

BTW - on the PS3 edition the install is NOT mandatory. It was gonna let me play anyway...

There is also already a v1.01 update for it.

so...  in SC3, you could create custom characters with different fighting styles than the other characters (ninja, etc).  is that no longer the case?  and what's the quickest way to unlock equipment for custom characters?

so far this game is even worse than 3.  soul calibur's fighting system is such trash :lol.

I just played thru Darth Brooks story mode...

I cannot believe that they actually wrote this into the Soul Calibur universe...

See - Lord V was just hanging out on the Deth Star and kept having dreams about something and then this portal opens so he decides to go thru the portal and find the source of the power...he whips everyones ass, take the two soul blades and then returns to his own worls where the power of the "demon blade" "brings the fear of the empire to a new level..."

Darth tosses his lightsabre for the 2 soul blades, gets in his ship and flys away...

hahahah

His character is just OK....im also playing story mode which is very different from arcade...

I do think its cool how they have aged ivy - she is more like a 40+ sword swinger in this game....she looks tired here as the game has some fresh new young blood ;)

Title: Re: THE SOUL STILL BURNS

what do these style lvls do?

I just played thru Darth Brooks story mode...

I cannot believe that they actually wrote this into the Soul Calibur universe...
really?  do you really consider SC's story to take itself seriously?  even guilty gear has a more fleshed out story mode.  the vader bit is just as bit as distinguished mentally-challenged as any of the regular characters' stories.
Title: Re: THE SOUL STILL BURNS
Post by: cool breeze on July 29, 2008, 06:42:42 PM
I made the Flash in character create.  This is awesome.

And Darth Vader is really cheap.  He isn't broken and garbage like Yoda, but he is still really cheap.  The force gauge shit isn't balanced.

Also, fuck you Namco for not letting me use Darth Vader as a template for other characters.
Title: Re: THE SOUL STILL BURNS
Post by: abrader on July 29, 2008, 06:44:11 PM
No I dont take it serious - its just funny - the whole subplot they wrote around darth.

I believe you get the style levels when you either do new moves or it means you have unlocked new moves....arcade mode seems to have al moves unlocked no?

Im pretty good at it so far - time to ping the online chaps and se how strategic it is...

star wars characters bring a refreshing change to the shit-fest that is the soul calibur universe.  it doesn't make sense and it isn't anything more than shitty shoehorning, but seriously, soul calibur's characters/story fails so hard already--star wars characters certainly don't hurt anything.

How available is the Hori Real Arcade Pro for the 360 in Japan?  I still can't decide which version to get because I'm trying to get either a Virtua Stick High Grade or an arcade in a box (http://www.arcadeinabox.com)joystick for the 360.

I'll be happy with the HRAP but it's been unavailble at all the online import stores.

no loading times in arcade, 5-7 seconds in multi-character story mode fights

I played a lot as the apprentice, who is awesome, and some of Vader (and Yoda on a friends game) and both of them are horrible.  I will try her tomorrow or something.  I can't think of a character in popular media that uses her weapon so that I can copy them.

In games like this, it's all about the compulsive collecting rather than the usefulness of the actual unlocked items.  I will never use 349 of the things I unlock.

You have to use either Yoda or Vader to beat him.

It is both really hard and really is with Vader since you can place his throw perfectly to toss the apprentice off the stage, but if you want to play fair it is a bit tough.

Because it seems like they really ramp up the difficulty against the Apprentice when you reach him.  Everything up to him was easy, even the final enemy after him was easy, but he is a bitch.  He has combos where he would fly in the air and shoot lightening down at you, then toss his light saber and make a force bubble appear on the ground, then he could pull you closer using the force and do this really strong grab move.

Lemme guess, he also has the skill that makes him difficult to ring out?

I don't think so, but the stage is more or less boxed off except for one far ledge.  I did beat him by Vader tossing him off the stage, but that depended on Vader's awesome throw (basically the same one he used on the Emperor in ROTJ)

i usually just take it for granted when i buy a fighting game that the story and voice acting will be fuckawful, i don't expect a well thought-out plot or meaningful dialogue from games that have women in panties fighting to the death against dudes with mouths in their chest

but i don't really mind this story, it's about as simple as it gets

i mean, they all want the swords, to either own them or destroy them or walk away from them, and that's about it

sort of wish i'd bought this on 360 now, since everyone else did, but then again no one on here ever plays me online lol

they probably could have given vader a few original lines instead of just sampling from the movies

nah -- per b3d it renders at something like 1360x960, but it hasn't got any aa, just a full screen blur. and apparently it's scaling twice if you output 1080p, i.e. down to 720p and then up again. the 360 version has a slight technical edge, but the unblurred ps3 version looks better...and this is the first i've heard about differing effects

That's right, it does not use AA.  There was also a mistake early on with a PS3 comparison where earlier PS3 shots were used.  The final game looks exactly the same on both systems.  What I'm uncertain of is whether or not the PS3 version will upscale.  By default, it uses 1280x720 mode.  They both have very similar image quality and look great.

I don't know where the "more effects" claim comes from, though.  I'll have to test for slowdown on the ice stage as well, but I encountered none during play on PS3.

Just stick to 720p if there's no native 1080p support.  The PS3 sucks at upscaling (it can't do a full 1920x1080 upscale).  There're also performance hits in some games when you force it to upscale to 1080P with Drohne's method.

Well, as long as your TV is 720p also.  On my 58" plasma, the difference between 720p and 1080P is pretty obvious.  Flat panels just suck at scaling, compared to CRTs.

Yeah, she's my new main. But she has a lot of problems vs 8-way at longer ranges and up close there are characters that can totally monopolize the space. I've had the AI so easily sidestep the longer spear attacks and she takes a second longer to recover than I would like ;)

She still has some great short-range moves thanks to some great fast short sword attacks and solid kick attacks, but really keeping the enemy in midrange allows her to deal massive pain.

If it is the same as the PS3 one, then it is passable, but not nearly as good as a a HRAP or VSHG.  It is better than playing with a controller at least.  I create characters using the controllers and when I need to test them out, it always feels really awkward playing with it.

I have the PS3 stick.  It's kinda crap.  I'd rather use the Tekken 5 10th anniversary stick, which is still not quite as good as a HRAP.

Is there someplace that sells a custom stick that works for both the PS3 and 360?  I like what arcadeinabox is selling but $150-200 is kinda expensive for a stick that only works with one system.

I think the good part of an arcade stick isn't really the stick, but comfortable access to all the responsive face buttons at once.  I would say that I am actually better at pulling on specific moves and things with my saturn controller than I am with a stick, but having all 6 buttons there makes it much easier to play.  An example is when playing with Taxi and I wanted to do the move where she jumps of you, I would need to somehow press square and circle at the same time, but on the arcade stick since I am using fingers and not my thumb, I am able to do combinations easily.

vf5 was one of the first ps3 games to upscale, and it actually renders at a lower resolution in its forced 1080p mode. there's really nothing magical about upscaling, and a 360, your tv, or a recent, well-coded ps3 game will all do a very similar job of interpolating and filtering. the 360's universal scaling is useful if your tv's scaler is particularly laggy, i guess

Put me into the "360 version is better" camp.  I played the PS3 version all last night, unlocking stuff and messing around.  This morning I hooked up my 360 (just moved) and tried the game out, and there is a noticeable difference.  The 360 version looks a little better (cleaner picture) and DEFINITELY loads faster (and yes, I installed data on my PS3).  It's also nice that you can unlock all the stock characters in like 10 minutes.  Unlocking everyone doesn't take that much time either.  I'm glad it doesn't take forever; I hate unlocking characters in general but this felt relatively painless.  Now to do it again on 360.

Vader is okay I guess.  He's better than Yoda, who is just WEIRD.  Apprentice seems kinda cool, but I don't want fucking Star Wars characters in Namco fighting games.  Sure this is better than Spawn, but not by too much.

I see DLC is already up too.  You can buy old songs and some custom parts from the original SC.

Is there a way to unlock tag mode for normal versus matches?  It has to be an option, right?

Anyone?  The feature HAS to be in there.

If it's by Richard Li, then it's probably totally believable and well done. If there is input from Shane, it's garbage.

Man, the Star Wars shit kinda ruins arcade mode.  Both Yoda and The Apprentice are so cheap (and in the case of the Apprentice, way overpowered) that it ruins the flow of the game.

I'm also kinda pissed that there is no tag team option for vs player.  Why is it only in story mode?  That's so fucking distinguished mentally-challenged.

Yeah, the Apprentice seemed twice as hard as the hardest fight you had up to that point.  All he does is spam that force power move and then low hit you constantly before you can get up or roll around.

Yoda's just really annoying because he is immune to throws and his movement is so erratic.

So kicking is a very powerful "weapon."  After all this losing, I stopped trying to parry so much and went back to good old fashioned blocking.  And kicking. Lots and lots of kicking (with Taki and Taki-style characters).

I got an unranked win streak going against these three Japanese players that were clearly much better than I was.  I don't think they knew what to do against so many kick attacks; I was shocked, but I beat everyone they threw at me.  Finally after losing, I got booted.   :lol

Yeah, when I play as Taki or Maxi, I use kicks as my main attacks.  Good range and snap to every attack.  Very easy to lay on a few attacks and back off without getting caught in a flimsy weapon combo.

Holy shit, I just fought against this guy with a custom Maxi character that looked EXACTLY like Jacky from Virtua Fighter!!  Same hair, black jacket, red pants, and black shoes...spot on!   :o

Yeah, when I play as Taki or Maxi, I use kicks as my main attacks.  Good range and snap to every attack.  Very easy to lay on a few attacks and back off without getting caught in a flimsy weapon combo.

Yeah, may have to look into Maxi (and perhaps Yun Sung?) now too.  This strategy is working great online; started playing ranked matches and was beating people with higher levels than me easily.

I love how easy they made it to unlock stuff: Don't feel like grinding in the tower of souls mode for custom character items?  Just play versus and rack up achievements...voila!

Vader is the worst fucking fighter character ever.  He's like a lumbering fool and his slow, awkward slashes do next to no damage at all.  I just spent the past half hour trying to beat The Apprentice (who's cheap as hell) and I want to throw my controller through the wall.  God damn that sucked.

I'm not liking this SC as much as the previous ones though, especially the single player mission/story modes.  It just feels gimped.

i don't use him much based on the fact that he is a novelty character (i don't use apprentice or algor for same reasons).  but i didn't really have a problem doing arcade mode with vader.  against the apprentice, i just threw him out of the ring twice because i wanted to get it over with quickly.  i think i do better with vader than with some other characters, but again, i don't really play as vader much.  i think it's distinguished mentally-challenged that you can't disallow the novelty characters online.

I just had a great match against a shit-talking kid.  I'm Taki, he picks a Cervantes style custom (animu Bleach version!).  I unleash the trusted "kickmaster method," doing almost nothing but kicks.  He keeps talking shit through his mic as he loses.  Then he gets pissed, and beats me down in the third battle.  He goes to finish it with the torpedo move, but I manage to sidestep and avoid it as he goes right off the edge of the stage, ending the match.   :lol

I wish I had a mic, I was :rofl the entire time listening to him bitch and talk shit as he lost.

Vader has some pretty cheap high priority combos.

Vader, Yoda- YUCK.  At least Vader is more "fair" than Yoda, but surprisingly I haven't encountered Yoda much in online bouts.  He's not as manueverable as the other characters, maybe that's why.

Apprentice has some cool moves, too bad he's related to Star Wars.

Haha, people have gotta be hating me online now.  I am making a series of characters all named "Kickmaster," and I do just that...kick kick kick KICK.  One guy got so mad at me cuz I knocked him out of the ring twice...I let him win the next two fights as he talked shit, then I kicked his ass right out again on the final match!   :lol  One guy was even like "oh, you're not a kick spammer, ARE YOU?"  "Kick Spammer," huh? Any decent player can get around the kick shit easy, laggy match or not.  There's just a LOT of shitty players out there.   ;)  You have to change up your game online.  A more simplistic approach works, and generally forget about trying to parry.  It's not my problem if your dumb ass won't roll or block.

i've yet to play an online fighter that didn't have crippling lag.  it's not a matter of poor netcode--it's the inherent design of fighting games.  fighting games depend on things like perfect frame execution and precise timing.  perfect online fighting is just not going to happen until network infrastructures are improved.

i play some online on ps3.  i've usually stuck with unranked matches because they keep you in that group after you play so it's less of a hassle.  ranked or unranked, i still win most the matches.  and i still don't like the fighting system--it's just so bad.  i don't see how anyone could still like this series that much.

and i still don't like the fighting system--it's just so bad.  i don't see how anyone could still like this series that much.

What is it that you don't like?
compared to something like street fighter or even guilty gear, soul calibur just feels obtuse.  the difference really lies with how you execute more complex attacks.  in street fighter and guilty gear, you use stick commands--in soul calibur, you use button combinations.  i think stick commands are MUCH more intuitive than pressing two buttons to do a move.

soul calibur gives you have a horizontal weapon attack button, a vertical weapon attack button, and a kick button...  but those only really make any sense when doing the most basic moves.  as soon as you start doing more advanced moves, the individual buttons often lose all definition.  there's little rhyme or reason when it comes to the more advanced moves--you just press two buttons and your character does a dance.  in the end i just feel like i'm recalling moves by memorizing the almost random button combinations--in games like street fighter and guilty gear, it's more intuitive.

guilty gear has a somewhat similar control scheme to soul calibur--there's a button dedicated to kicks (though gg also has punch), and gg's 'weapon' buttons are slash and hard slash.  but gg uses stick commands.  so for slayer's sliding moves, for example, you use quarter circle back + kick (kick = legs = movement)--it makes sense because your input correlates with the character's actions.  cervantes's teleport attack uses back+kick+b... yet the character goes up and then comes down--other directions with kick+b are totally different moves.  with taki, i can roll forward and attack, follow that up with an aerial horizontal dive...  and i never even touched the stick.

in general, soul calibur has less correlation between your input and the actions on screen.  sure, there are some attacks (like some of the diagnals) that make more sense, but there's just so many moves that do have that disconnect i reference above.

it'd be one thing if that was just the direction soul calibur went--button combos instead of stick commands isn't necessarily invalid.  but soul calibur decides it also wants to have stick commands...   which are often even MORE complex than stuff in guilty gear and street fighter (214 to 3?  :wag).

Justin, it seems you clearly like 2D fighters far more than 3D fighters.  Me too!  But I enjoy Soul Calibur a whole bunch; my general problem with 3D fighters is the overall "stiffness" of everything.  It doesn't feel like you have complete control over everything the character does, or it's just way too unresponsive, unlike a sprite-based fighter.  But SC is one of the few fighters that has always felt very smooth to me.

I seem to be having good luck against level 42 players on the PS3 version.  Here's another one, FALLEN VICTIM TO THE KICKMASTER!

It's like these guys cannot fathom "uh-buh?  Kick?  high, low, high?  CANNOT BLOCK ONLY HIGH CANNOT BLOCK ONLY HIGH GAME OVER MAN, GAME OVER!"

I'm loving this game although I have no clue wtf i'm doing. I didn't even kinow there were finishers or secret special moves (what button performs these on 360?)

I haven't seen a single finisher yet myself.  You have to break all of a character's armor off first, and in all the matches I've played that's never happened!

just one piece of broken armor is needed

i did it in training mode.  i think it'll only effect turtles.

you press all 4 (K+A+B+G) at the same time (or use the L1 macro)

really easy

I bought the American version of the game.  In the manual, the back has a 1 dollar off coupon for Church's chicken.

What the hell is Church's chicken, I'm from NY and have never heard of it.  Perhaps the bigger question is why there is a coupon for goddamn food in a videogame instruction manual.

The character creation is much better then previous attempts, I made talim with green hair and I think amys outfit :heartbeat

also won a bunch of matches online, then got my ass kicked
pretty lag free, only one laggy match so far which is pretty impressive.

anyone with the ps3 version wish to challenge me, I accept in advance

LOL LOL LOL LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL I just beat the level 53 (I'm at 16) Soul Calibur 4 player twice in a row-- major beat down by me both times with Taki and Cassandra.  Dude was PISSED; I could tell even without a mic that he was getting desperate and failing miserably.  Japanese players typically don't do anything after a round when they win; this guy started wailing on me the one or two rounds he got a victory.  So I made sure to do cancel-taunts at the end of every round over and over again.    :lol

I beat a level 81 player earlier today with a PERFECT in one round.  He won in the end but I couldn't stop laughing at how I did it, and this was over a perfect connection so it wasn't lag.  He had to have heard me on the mic.    :lol :lol

Anyone on the Bore still playing?  I am still only doing online matches; think I have almost all the customizable parts unlocked in the PS3 version.  Haven't touched the 360 version lately.

EDIT: Make that level 17.  I just beat another joker with a level that seems to be far too high for his playing ability.  He got me before.  Revenge is sweet.

I'm still playing.  I'm level 14 on PS3 with 75% win ratio.  I've been dedicating a lot of time to the Tower lately and have now completed it.  I'm more into descending the tower than playing online, but I will get on if friends want me to.

My PSN handle is Uno_Ill_Nino.  Anybody who wants another SC4 player on their list should add me.

I love this game, but I can't beat the tower.  It's impossible! :(

The trick is to outfit your character with the best armor and "powers".  My guy had a total mismatch of the ugliest shit possible, but he had a ton of HP and 3 of the best powers you could get.  HP Drain, Venom Fang A, and Start Dash B.  Plus I had backup characters that I'd occassionally put Shave Damage powers on.  Then just learn to be real good about tagging in and out your guys.  You recover HP when you're not fighting, so anytime you take damage, change guys.

I also ended up making 2 of the same guy.  Same powers and all that.  Usually I wouldn't need my 3rd guy on the floors where they give you one, so I'd start with him and give him the crazy kind of powers I wouldn't normally try.

You know, I think I prefer the PS3 version to the 360 version simply because there's no one using mics whenever I play it.

Hopped onto the 360 version after about a week (maybe more) of only playing the PS3 version.  The first match I had was against a guy with a shitacular connection.  I picked Taki and he was Maxi.  It didn't take much to beat him; just doing the tracking kicks stuff pretty much took him out.  But right off the bat I was greeted with chants of "taco U SUCK!!" and my favorite at the end, "you don't know how to play this game!  YOU SUCK!"  even though I am not yet level 20 and he was 40-something.  Then what made me crack up was his profile: "I make endgame bosses commit suicide.  Also you don't want to fight me on SC IV.  3973 kills to go."  El-oh-el.  Dude's name is "Matrim 611."  If you spot him, kick his ass with just kicks since he doesn't know what to do against them.
