No, its actually really fun. Its like Stalker + Africa + Insert Open World Game Here elements. The graphic effects really come together when its all in motion, and those screens ive seem like anything ive seen on my tv, even when giving them the benefit of the doubt and standing fuck still.

Yeah thats right Lyte, Stalker, another game you may want to start calling 'bad'

i'm a big Stalker fan, but some of the design decisions I've heard in this game sound really annoying.
then again I did play through Stalker....

The mysterie of it all had me go ahead and start the install.

Looks like about 2 minutes....then ill try it.

Post by: abrader on October 25, 2008, 06:25:55 AM
I played a bit of it.

I like it - it has a pace I will expect from fallout3.

It does do some sloppy ass stuff like when you use the scope to locate things on the map (WTF makes the sight turn green?) and the save points are metal boxes with a 3.5 floppy disk image on it that flash/glow blue ?

On my first go at it I had the brightness set too dark (trying to get max blacks for 3D pop)

Some part of the world look great - and some look last genish.

It makes MErcs 2 feel more like "Return Fire X"

Im gonna put it back in the cabinet for now - but im intrigued and feeling neutral about it at the moment.

AI seems pretty MErcs2ish. (which is OK for mercs 2 due to enemy number) but in this game being able to easily and not even sneak a round about circle around move on an enemy and shoot him form behind is kinda lame.

I think the driving is fun.

Does this game have multi co-op or what?

Oh well - back to DeadSpace.

The gunplay is designed to simulate being a drunken Russian, and in that respect it is damn near uncanny.

What isn't better than GTA4.

I was surprised to see you playing this on 360 and not PC.  I think I'll try to rent this after I return Saints Row 2.

I don't know why everyone hates on the STALKER shotoing mechanics, I actually enjoyed it.  I liked that I had to adjust my shot to factor in distance and angle of decent.

Far Cry 2 is killer. People need to stop bitching about it and realize that if you play more than 20 minutes you get better guns and the thing turns out to be fucking awesome. So much to do.
Title: Re: Far Cry 2 > GTA4

this game is fucking awesome. the lengths ubisoft montreal went to sustain immersion without making the game retardedly obtuse is awesome, and the gunplay is great. how can you like fps titles and hate this game?

Did you get the 360 version as well?

I'm itching for an open world FPS...this game is looking pretty exciting to be honest.  I just wish it didn't have the typical UBI bugginess attached.

yeah, i got the 360 version. i've played roughly an hour and seen no bugs; it seems really polished.

I don't like this game.

"Come to the other side of the map"

"Ok now go back to the other side of the map"

Me- "Motherfucker couldn't you've just said that shit on the phone? Man fuck you."

Boring and repetitive. Yikes!

Yeah I think it boils down to whether you like the open-ended game play style or not.  I like it in games like Saint's Row 2 but not so much in this.  The controls are fine but the game play itself just feels a little sluggish to me.  It was particularly noticeable in multiplayer, which is my favorite part of FPS games; don't think it's all that great in FC2 and I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about it.

stalker comparisons eh?

I've been playing the PC version. I'm digging it. My 7800gt is holding up well on medium settings though I'm half tempted to bust into my 360 fund and get an 8800gt. I can't imagine how good this would look with a better rig than I got.
I had to stop playing because the gunfire was "too loud" and turning it down even more kills it for me. I gotta gets some headphones I guess.

Overall, I can't wait to get into it more.

Shit game. 1up's Ryan O'Donnell likes it. That is usually the kiss of death. I find the setting uninteresting and the gameplay repetitive. I might just be sick of the genre, though.
Title: Re: Far Cry 2 > GTA4
Post by: MrAngryFace on October 27, 2008, 02:40:27 AM
you mean FPS? or open world? is open world a genre now?

I was looking at my shelf and i've got 4 sequels that are at least partially open-world games.

Mercs 2, Far Cry 2, Saints Row 2, Fable 2

This also runs like, phenomenally well on the PC, even in DX10 mode.  It's rather pretty, as well.  But I have everything maxed, AA on and vsync, and it's locked at 30fps, aside from rather infrequent stutters, which are (sadly) common in most high end games.

Mercs 2, Saints Row 2, Fable 2
All excellent games. Far Cry 2 is much different. It feels like a very traditional FPS at its core.

The online community kinda sucks. Everyone just plays the official maps and no one joins custom map games.

The framerate hitches get annoying when driving, where they appear to occur much more often.  It's not game breaking, but I hope a patch can fix it.

You mean the stuttering?

You have to limit your FPS. For example, if i don't limit my FPS, the game goes north of 50FPS sometimes, but there's stuttering when driving and stuff. So i limit the framerate to 40 FPS (open console, gfx_maxfps**), and the stuttering is gone.

The design of this game is slightly janky but it's interesting nonetheless

The voice actors all sound REALLY bored

The proximity thing took some getting used to. (Meaning, you have to stay close to a person to have them keep continuing the conversation -- if you move away they say something random and you're like WTF)

How far along are the people that like the game? I only had yesterday to play so I'm still a little green and I like to sneak around a lot. I rescued that girl that told me to meet her in a bar without being spotted on the way in or out.
Last thing I did was take out a hidden truck of supplies along with clearing a few safe houses along the way. Maybe 9% I think the save was at.

I just finished it. The ending was absolutely

spoiler (click to show/hide)
terrible. Just like Assassin's Creed, the final stage involves you running down a trough fighting shitloads of enemies that they throw at you. There are multiple endings, and in both you commit suicide. I thought there might be some sort of moral choice where you could opt to take the coward's way out instead and doom the country.

Maybe the ending changes if you give all of the Jackal's audio logs to the journalist, but I'm not on a collectathon here.

Annoying shit:
-- The number of times you can shoot a shirtless man in the face before he falls over is staggering
-- Your gun seems to jam way more at the ending, but maybe that's because you fight 100x the dudes
-- Jeeps tend to get stuck way too often

Anyway, it was pretty good for 19 of the 20 hours, so there ya go.

I finished this as well.  I think there's some sort of French Canadian or Euro sensibility I lack, b/c all of Ubi's stories seem distinguished mentally-challenged to me.  I still don't understand the horrible voice acting they produce.  It's almost like they get non-English speakers to record lines by reading the dialog phonetically or something.

It wouldn't surprise me if that isn't the "canon" ending. Didn't Prince of Persia have two endings,

after finishing the game i'd say it's no better then GTA4 at all.

it had the same flaws as gta4 - repetitive missions (it didn't even have a standout mission like 3 leaf clover). and LOL at the arms dealer missions. go to area, destroy truck that just so happens to drive in a circle instead of trying to actually deliver its goods. plus once you get to the heart of darkness the game becomes linear and the two ending choices fucking suck.

and oh my at the awful MP. :lol
