Title: Oblivion, an exercise in frustration!
Post by: The Fake Shemp on November 20, 2008, 12:08:28 AM: So I nabbed a used copy of the GOTY edition after beating Fallout 3 because I decided that even though I had attempted to "get into" Oblivion once and failed miserably, Fallout was so good that I must have more.

I just wanted to know from you Oblivion vets about the following:

Is the map system shoddy or do I suck?

Is there anyway to stop the texture fade/pop in?

Is there a specific way to go about the maintenance of armor/weapons?

Is the main quest any satisfying?

Post by: MrAngryFace on November 20, 2008, 12:13:30 AM: People bitch about Fallout 3's map (*cough* Methodis *cough*) but gee golly Oblivion's map is argh. Im playing on PC tho so im not having the technical issues you are.

Repairing weapons requires repair hammers in your inventory, its not as convenient as fallout. As for the main quest, I dunno. I lost interest as well but Fallout 3 had the same effect on me.

MY recommendation? Load up a game, instant you leave the prison find the entrance to the Shivering Isles area. Its an island close to the prison iirc and its fantabulous

The main quest is OK, but I wouldn't concentrate on it - just do a bit of it now and then like any other quest. Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild are pretty good quests and some of the smaller ones can be quite good.

Armour and weapon maintenance isn't anything really special. See people to fix them up at first in the Fighters Guild or something, or steal a ton of hammers as you go and just fix them yourself to get your skill up.

Save frequently (especially before entering a dungeon) and keep old saves, because there's a reasonable amount of game breaking bugs. At least on PC you can get around a door if it doesn't want to open, and I think the modding community on PC have probably fixed most of the bugs since Bethesda couldn't be bothered. Although if it breaks while you've got a tag-along NPC, you might be totally fucked. I played it on 360 so don't know much about the PC version (are you on PC?).

I cheated in ELS4 (that's what the cool kidz call it) by making it so one arrow would kill anyone.

Post by: Bildi on November 20, 2008, 12:25:28 AM: Shivering Isles is great, I missed that Willco got the GOTY edition. Depending on the type of person you are, I'd consider saving it until you're tired of the same old scenery in Cyrodiil.

I think I'm only half way through Knights of the Nine but it's pretty meh.

also dunno...i got stuck at the mehrunes razor part where you go undercover into this cave and have to kill an offering to some demons or something. whatever. that part is BULLSHIT, its fucking impossible to not die.

As for repairing in Oblivion, I actually prefer it more than Fallout 3's repair system. In Oblivion, you gain experience by just doing anything, for instance you gain repair XP by repairing equipment/weapons. It does require that you carry repair hammers, but that beats the hell out of having to carry around duplicate items as in Fallout 3 imo. Also, there is an incentive to repair items in Oblivion because when you reach a certain level in the skill you can repair equip/weapons past 100% which gives them an additional attack/defense bonus as well as more durability.

There are some LOD texture packs that will make this problem less noticeable, but it won't fix it completely.

Repair hammers and points in the repair skill.

Not really. It has a few decent moments, but the Dark Brotherhood and Shivering Isle quests are much better.

The leveling up system and the Oblivion planes required way, way too much grinding though. Fallout 3 made a lot of improvements on the formula, especially with having unique and interesting weapons plus locations.

Obviously, they must have patched and changed a lot of things. The main difference is the loot you get from enemies, I'm lv10 and I've been getting some great enchanted gear. Though, it could just be I'm getting lucky.

I've also taken up Alchemy this time around and its fun just going on foot and seeing new specimens to pick and mix. I'm surprised I totally neglected this last time I played.

Say what you will about Oblivion but what I've played is more enjoyable than Morrowind. I couldn't get into Morrowind because dice roll combat. Swing your sword in an action rpg and you somehow MISS because of a fucking DICE ROLL? Bullshit. in an action rpg, if I stab a fucker, I stab a fucker.

Even being overpowered, I would still run away from Cliff Racers. Such a horrible monster.

They aren't hard to beat, but they're everywhere and they fly down from sky at you and the only way to hit them is to look directly up only sometimes they'll hover just out of reach and squawk at you incessantly.

I guess it depends on what you value in games. I will always enjoy exploration and adventuring more than combat in games, and Morrowind was so much better in that regard. And Oblivion combat was better, but it was still pretty bad. Bethesda struck a balance with Fallout 3 because the combat can basically play itself while you're free to do the fun stuff.

But Oblivion, my character rocks. Self sufficient with Restoration and Armoring as her main skills and Blade, Heavy Armor and Sneak to finish them off. Love this character build. I hate the vanilla "Thief" build since its built around Light Armor. Sneak is more than usable with Heavy Armor.

Also, having my luck up at 71 = Lot of good loot

I value expoloration and adventure quite a bit. But if I'm wiffing at the first fucking enemy I encounter in the game - a damn crab - when I'm hitting him point blank I already know that game is not for me.

I think Fallout 3's combat's not the best but the exploration makes up for it. I didn't get that with Morrowind. If it had Oblivion esque combat I'd be along for the ride.

Morrowind was pretty shitty if you ask me, as I had the same problems Willco had getting into the game. Those problems weren't apparent in Oblivion to me, and I loved the game, but not enough to beat the main quest, which was pretty lame if you ask me.

Fallout 3 is the pinnacle of the studio's achievements so far. I just wish the game was the size and scope of Oblivion, that's all.

If you include the DLC levels for Fallout 3, isn't it about as large as Oblivion?

Should be pretty close, but Oblivion had Shivering Isles, which was probably bigger than all the Fallout 3 DLC so far combined.
