Hmm...there's something wrong with that number. It's first month [November] had it selling 296k units, so to make it up to 865k on the year it would have had to sell 569k units. But it's not in the top ten for December and the #10 game sold 497k.

Edit: Forgot that it came out in October, that's probably where the extra units came from.

Here's the deal with the wii christmas sales/bad economy thing  - if you have more than one kid, it's cheaper to buy a wii + extra remote/stick + a couple of cheap games as a "family present" than it is to go out and buy a lot of presents for each individual kid.  That's what my buddy did for his two little girls.

also, no Fallout 3 on those lists = :(

Nintendorks got so shat on last generation, by the gaming community and their beloved console overlord itself that the sales figures and resurgence of Nintendo's brand recognition amongst the elderly is like sweet, sweet vindication.  But it is nothing than an empty victory, because Nintendo has shunned them in favor of waggle minigames and other crappery.

NPD data released for December and all of 2008 also included the following:

* The industry’s top 4 selling games of 2008 were: Wii Play™ at No. 1, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 2, Wii Fit™ at No.3, and Super Smash Brothers™ Brawl, at No. 4.
* Industry annual revenues jumped 19% in 2008 over 2007, and Nintendo products were responsible for 99% of those additional retail dollars.
* Nintendo DS set another industry record for system sales in any month, with 3.04 million units sold in December.
* Wii broke its own monthly record, set in December 2007, by selling 2.14 million units last month.
* In December, Nintendo titles filled 20 of the top 30 spots on the best-seller list. Six games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10, including Wii Music™ for Wii (No. 9), which has now sold 865,000 units following its launch in October 2008, and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS (No. 7), which has sold a total of 4.3 million units 38 months after launch.
* Activision’s Guitar Heroฎ III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Heroฎ World Tour, and MTV Games/EA’s* Rock Band Special Edition Bundle all sold more units on Nintendo platforms than any other platforms in 2008.
* More 3rd party units were sold for Wii than any other home consoles in December for the 2nd consecutive month.
* For the year, more than 132 million games were sold in America for play on Nintendo systems.

Depending on the whims of the government, sales might equal the latest census figure.

Prince of Persia bomba makes me happy as a hardcore gamer.

Sony needs to get their shit together. They should make the Killzone 2 MP beta an open beta RIGHT NOW and make people see the amazing or something.

Huh.

Well, that makes sense. He's working on some licensed flash online client type game for tweens, and apparently Free Realms and Club Penguin are two of the titles he always mentions.

Poor guy, he went from creating a big MMO to working on this.  :(

Gotta love Sony's PR:

PlayStation by the Numbers - December 2008

PlayStation Brand Staged for Continued Momentum in 2009

Total 2008 PS3 Hardware Sales Up 40% and PS3 Software Sales Up 115% in the U.S.

In December, 726,005 PS3 hardware units were sold, representing an increase of 92% from November.

PS3 also generated one of its strongest months in software unit sales in the U.S., with almost 6 million units sold in December. For the calendar year, PS3 software unit sales increased 116%.

    * Top-selling games for PS3 in December included exclusive hits Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet, as well as third-party blockbusters, such as Activision’s Call of Duty: World at War, Midway Games’ Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, and Ubisoft’s Price of Persia.

    Executive Perspective

“The PlayStation brand has had a solid calendar year with total PS3 hardware sales up 40% and total PS3 software sales up 115%. We remain confident in our momentum into 2009 as we continue to deliver to our consumers the best entertainment content and technology out there. And we delivered on that promise this past year with one of the best software line-ups in the industry, a dramatically expanded PlayStation Network with the launch of the video delivery service and the beta of PlayStation Home, as well as extended hardware offerings with the PSP 3000 and Uncharted 160GB PS3 bundle. We also hit a remarkable milestone for the PlayStation 2 platform in North America with 50 million units sold. It’s truly an amazing testament to the power and legacy of our brand.”

Not sure why they can't just make the Killzone 2 MP beta an open beta. Even though COD4 was not an open beta, the MP demo did A LOT of good for that game's buzz prior to release. Seems rather shortsighted to try and monetize this demo when they could be spreading the good word about KZ2.

And does someone have me on ignore already? More powah 2 U.

On the one hand, I'm happy that they aren't going with the demo "beta" shit that every damned developer/publisher is going for these days. The beta felt very much like a beta, and not a demo version in need of a serious disclaimer. On the other hand, the game could probably use a demo then, and it should probably be released soon.

If they screw up the marketing of the most marketable property around, then they might as well drop out for the next few years.

Isn't the demo coming out 1 DAY before the retail game for anyone who doesn't give a shit enough to try and score it from Gamestop?

Truly shows a lot of confidence in letting their game speak for itself.

Also, I was not under the impression (at least from GAF) that the MP demo had mixed reviews. It's a creamblast over there.

Sure, David Ellis doesn't like it, but that's because I moneyhatted him.

I still wonder how Insomniac felt about the KZ2 beta hitting R2 right on the cock. It was a limited beta so the actual effect can't have been that significant, but it seemed like a pretty dick thing to do. Not that R2 deserved any spotlight, though.

I don't understand how Sony operates.  The Resistance 2 beta was more of a demo, the Motorstorm PR demo was more of a beta, the demo for Killzone 2 is is almost a month exclusive to preorders at Gamestop.  The only reasoning I could think of is that they've given up on having a single game make a huge splash in it's first month and now focus on consistent decent sales and marketing post-release.  I mean, I wouldn't exactly be shocked if MGS4 is still in the demo reel at their next E3 conference.

And I didn't read many impressions of Killzone 2, but even outside of David Ellis, I saw a few others having problems with the general movement and all that.

and again, speaking of exclusive demos, if the FEAR 2 demo on PSN is any indication of the quality of the final game, then the PS3 version should give you flashbacks of the early PS3 ports.

Mostly initial reactions from people who assumed that it would be a COD4 or Halo 3 clone, though. I think my initial reaction was of that sort, but it changed pretty quickly. Although, that may be a fair point in regards to a demo, as I'm sure plenty of people will have the same first reaction. Then again, the game has a few things going for it to keep people at it until the controls and game pacing feels natural, so that may not be a realistic concern beyond the very first impressions.

I thought the game was great and I'm confident the PC version (which I'm getting) will be great, but there was slowdown all over the place along with some weird audio glitches.  Last E3 they would show off the same demo played on the 360 without all these problems.

Pachter will go to the end of the generation thinking Blu-Ray is going to cause Sony to eventually prevail. It has been his tune for over two years now, it doesn't appear to be changing. And his calculus on the cost/benefit to a price drop seems to be overly optimistic, in my opinion. I don't think the games and movie tie-ratios will be nearly as high as he thinks they will be over the course of the next few years for the average consumer buying into the systems from now going forward.

But, hey, he could be right. Sony might mount a comeback. Good luck to the both of them.

After Wii skyrocketed was it ever really in doubt 360 could sell as much third party software? The gap in the hardware base makes it impossible no matter how shitty a lot of third party software on Wii is Wii was clearly going to sell more third party software than 360+PS3.

All the doom and gloom about HD gaming dying or getting replaced is a little bit exaggerated.

Nintendo might be raking it in, but it the gaming industry isn't about the console war. Sure, the goal is to make as much money as possible given the market, and it seems Nintendo has hit that goal and lifted the bar for everyone else to hit, but as long as publishers/hardware makers are hitting and exceeding their quarterlies, then they win too.

The danger that publishers are going to create nothing but shitty waggle shovelware is alleviated by the fact that, apparently, it's hard to make shovelware sell if your name is not Nintendo.

I'm glad Wii is gonna run this hobby into the ground.

Harcore games make people have violent behavior, have anti social stances in life, cynical view of things, and overall just depressive. Wii is like a rainbow in the battlefield.

The war is at an end.

Who cares Burnout lost the game

so youre saying driving sims are better?

because they are fyi

Sims are better, I agree. But it's a quick ticket to bankruptcy in these "economically challenging times".

The key is to hit that perfect middle of the road between hardcore and mainstream. Which game has done that, in your opinion?

Test Drive: Unlimited does a really good job of finding the middle ground between those two extremes. Plus, it's a great game.

How about we meet in the middle?

Project Gotham Racing series

bullshit.  pgr4 was a huge downgrade from pgr3's driving engine.  everything felt way too light and skidded out on a dime around corners

imo anything that has tried to mix sim with arcade has sucked.  i dont see how a sim would be hard to sell in 2G2D.  you could market it as something like "200 different cars on one disc!" obvious value versus the 5 or whatever tonka hotwheels in burnout

It would pretty fun to see Nintendo exterminate "core" gaming just for the bitter tears.

"See?"  When your idea of a game for the "hardcore gamer" is Animal Crossing, I'd say you've pretty much already done so.

It has to die to be reborn, free from the wagglecancer

Like a phoenix with 20 buttons, dual analog sticks, and a keyboard attachment it will rise anew

And ninthing jews will weep

The videogame market is like the comic book market, and the Wii is Crisis on Infinite Earths.

I do wonder if there will be a point where the masses just get bored of Nintendo, and more importantly, if it will come before Sony/Microsoft do something distinguished mentally-challenged like release an underpowered, overpriced, motion based system of their own.  But it's hard to tell with all the analogies between Nintendo and Apple to know if Nintendo will continue to allure people like Apple does.

It's just a hobby. I don't want to see it exterminated, but it wouldn't matter if it was. Meanwhile, the meltdowns of manchildren who take this stuff way too seriously would be a beauty to behold.

There are toys and then there are toys.

I'm talking about Nintendo bringing gaming back into the Action Man category. That's right, Nintendo has always been there, but now it's gonna drag the whole hobby with it.

With all the faggaty ass peripherals and shit, and bitch ass Mario Kart etc. Whatever son, whatever, dem japafags be getting they paper, i can understand that, fine by me.

Videogames are bad.

Ah memories. I had that Tiger handheld along with Mega Man 2, Double Dragon, and Gauntlet. Amazing how quickly I trashed those once the Gameboy came out.

Cmon, let's cut the shit.

As if son, as if. Worst generation since the 60's? Bet your sweet ass, why? Fucking videogames. All these, anti social, murder simulators are ruining all ya suckas lifes.

A nicca can learn how to cap a son of a bitch these days playing fucking halo. Not only do you learn how to kill, but you are labeled a cigarillo, a distinguished black fellow, by other kids.

Time to wake up people, i've personally never played so few games in such a large timespan, and i have the Wii to thank for that. Keep up the good work Nintendo, bringing morals back to our youth, bringing them a system that only works if you play local mp, bringin a system with such few games for the core gamers, that they stop playing, and start gaining other interests, like reading, and playing violin, and stop being fatass bitches.

Go smoke some rocks, do something with your life.

Ha, I like video games just fine. (And I'm playing Gears of War right now, stay up to speed.) But it's just one hobby. But to the point, Nintendo isn't killing anything. Every single month people whine about Nintendo killing gaming, and every single month developers release and announce more and more games for Xbox 360 and PS3 and nothing much for the Wii. Every single month. Whining about something that just isn't happening.

Don't be blind my man.

You're just seeing what you want to see. For example, take a look at this year, 09'. What do you see? A year that looks far too good for the Ps3. What does that mean? That you ain't seeing straight, because clearly such a thing is impossible.

See, it's your brain censoring reality, because the hold hard truth is, the only reason why Ps3 lineup looks so good is because the year looks exceptionally shit, like cold dog shit, why?

The Wii. That is right, i fuken said it, the bitchass Wii. Oh you don't understand? Open your eyes mate, the Wii lineup for 09 is much better than it was for last year, which means a drop off in quality games released for the 360, what do we have, halo wars? Bitch ass nicca game, solja that superman where at! AaIiiiiii.

Eeeeenn, eeeenn, eeennn. See what i'm talking about? ^Wii, ^(+180บ) 360 = PS3 :). That's right, ps3 smiley face, because let's get real for a sec, the only reason why the Ps3 lineup looks good is because the 360 lineup looks like shit, and the only reason why the 360 lineup looks like shit is because the Wii lineup looks like less shit than before. Real Talk. So you can see how the Ps3 lineup looks as shit as years past, but since Nintendo is like "Oh look, pikachu just Michael Jacksoned your kid", and 360 is like "I can't do the moonwalk no more", you are turning into the Ps3 and thinking "Even if Michael looks like a goolish white motherfucker, he still made thriller". Thriller is long gone dude, you need a reality check. Real talk uuuuuuummmgonnaaaa.

Michael Jackson has become a middle earth cocksucker, and you are still hoping for Pop to come back, but it ain't. Because Avril Levigne is what's up, and Britney is like womanizing the world, while Little John is going yaaaaa ok, yaaaaa, takes this dicks its yours bitch, and meanwhile the whole industry is being run into the ground.

I just watched Taxi Driver, so i ain't got anything to do with this shit, whatever bitches, holla.
