Title: evilbore sonic mega drive collection thread
Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on February 09, 2009, 12:37:21 PM
It comes out tomorrow.

Kinda stupid that they didn't take the extra five seconds to add Sonic 3 & Knuckles to the collection (maybe they'll patch it in if enough people complain) but it's worth it for the other games.

Awesome collection for dirt cheap ($30).  Support Phil and Ethan and pick up a copy.  Or two!

A nice bonus is that you can get 1000 points fairly easily.

$30? For some reason I thought this was going to be $50-$60. I may get this down the road but I wish they had included the Wonderboy games. This collection seems empty without it.

Kinda stupid that they didn't take the extra five seconds to add Sonic 3 & Knuckles to the collection (maybe they'll patch it in if enough people complain) but it's worth it for the other games.

Wait? So this isn't Sonic's ultimate collection?

"patch" in an entirely new game? It's $30. I'm sorry that is too much for you all. I suppose the allure of VC is much better.

It's not really an entirely new game, though, technically speaking. All Sega has to do is take five seconds and combine the Sonic 3 ROM and the S&K ROM. It's really that easy.

I mean it looks OK but controls are from 1988 and is too slow and clunky really compared to awesome Treasure games of that era. Dynamite Headdy shits all over it, esp. in regards to art direction

I don't know all the games, but some of those arcade unlocks look kind of easy.  If I remember right the Megadrive conversion of Alien Storm was stupidly easy.

What about Flicky?  I've been dying to play that.

I really enjoyed Ristar back in the day, and I thought it was still pretty good the last time I played it [on my PSP]. It's definitely one of the best platform games on the system. The reason you hear so many people talking about it on GAF is because the game was criminally underrated and ignored when it came out. The game got great reviews but totally bombed in sales so Sega decided to kill the IP. It was a really sad result for such a promising new IP.

Just my $0.02.

Flicky is a good game.

I can remember it getting absolutely horrific scores when it was reviewed back in the day, but it's pretty decent fun.

I remember UK mag Mean Machines gave it an awesome score even though the graphics and sound were naff.

92% actually: http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/pdf/flickymd.pdf?PHPSESSID=7bdb0934954322e0d0fc86ee381fc458

Eff Yea!  Hell, SOR 2&3 still have deeper movesets then lots of beat-em-ups that come out today.  And far, far better music then almost anything else out there.

that wouldn't be the only reason I'll be picking this up, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Im not sure how 'promising' the IP was. I mean the game came out around the end of the MD's/Genesis' life ('94-'95) so a sequel wouldve been on Saturn and been a shithouse 3d platformer. And there is the fact that the main character is just a faggy ass star with a face.

Yeah, not so promising imo

I flat out refuse to believe that they had to either "risk" dropping all the extras for a single game. False... I am taking this game back when I'm done with it. Sorry, but Mr. Einhorn is a piece of shit.

He is a producer going by what he was told from the development teams.  So basically, you're calling him a piece of shit for being the messenger.

You don't always have to such a dick, but it's usually funny.  Just be informed next time on where to direct your "rage."

Changing the course of discussion, let's assume for a moment that Ethan is innocent. Let's ask a different question:

What changes in the development process allowed for the Sonic 3 & Knuckles "lock-on" feature to be implemented in the Sonic Mega Collection on the previous consoles, while opting out on a medium and platform that allowed for much more?

Ugh, you aren't kidding.  I wanted the MS games for so long, and when I got a Genesis one of the first five games I got was Alex Kidd.  Man, it was pretty but so floaty it was just garbage.  I've played some of the MS ones on emu and they still hold up a bit, they at least are unique.  The Gen version is such a letdown in comparison.  I can't remember but I don't even think I beat it which was rare back then for me.

Well, another 1000 in the bag. Go me. So I will use this post to show what games I rated, and a little blurb on them. It's time to recollect, and see just what stood the test, and what deserves to be mocked and made fun of.

(Games can be rated from 0 to 5)

Alex Kidd: 0 - This game is awful.

Alien Storm: 0 - This game is awful.

Altered Beast: 0 - Awful

Beyond Oasis: 5 - A classic, I could play this over and over

Bonanza Bros: 0 - Not fun at all

Columns: 3 - Pretty basic, very difficult if you dont pause every move, but holds up

Comix Zone: 3 - Love the setting, the graphics, but can be frustrating

Decap Attack: 4 - One of the more fun platformers, inventory usage is different, but pretty easy

Dr Robotnik's MBM: 0 - I hate puyo puyo Protip: Use the code to go to the last level for the achievement - still gotta beat it though

Dynamite Headdy: 3 - Pretty, but frustrating

E-Swat: 1 - Cool, but frustrating and clunky

Ecco The Dolphin: 0 - Shit

Ecco The Dolphin 2: 0 - See Ecco

Fatal Labyrinth: 5 - Awesome, never knew about this game. Roguelike on Genny? Childhood would have gone by much better. A+

Flicky: 3 - Enjoyable, graphics are uggo

Gain Ground: 0 - Awful

Golden Axe: 0 - Dear god awful

Golden Axe 2: 1 - Still awful, but... no, still awful

Golden Axe 3: 3 - Muuuuch better. Still awful.

Kid Chameleon: 5 - Awesome, the level warp in stage 2 still works.

Phantasy Star 2: 5 - Default rating

Phantasy Star 3: 1 - Ughhh

Phantasy Star 4: 5 - You know it baby

Ristar: 3 - Mehhhhhhhhhh

Shining Force: 5 - Awesome

Shining Force 2: 5 - Awesome

Shining in the Darkness: 5 - Awesome

Shinobi 3: 5 - Awesome

Sonic & Knuckles: 3 - Meh

Sonic 3D Blast: 3 - Meh

Sonic Spinball: 5 - Awesome

Sonic the Hedgehog: 3 - Ok, for a mascot game

Sonic The Hedgehog 2: 5 - Very memorable, probably the best

Sonic The Hedgehog 3: 3 - They overdid it, graphics are crap. But whatever

Streets of Rage: 3 - Default

Streets of Rage 2: 4 - +1 Increase cause

Streets of Rage 3: 5 - Best beat em up ever... god I love this game (Protip: The Roo code doesnt work, you have to earn it the other way)

Super Thunder Blade: 0 - God Awful

Vectorman: 1 - Didnt hold up at all

Vectorman 2: 1 - Ditto. (Protip: Just use the level select code to warp to Level 11)

Holy shit, this has the two Shining Force games AND Shining in the Darkness?  I made SitD maps on graph paper as a kid, I loved that game.

This collection is stacked, I need to check it out.

edit:  Makes the lack of Shadow Dancer that more curious.  Glad it has the other two Shinobi games, but I liked Shadow Dancer :(

Demi was wrong about ESwat btw

Ecco The Dolphin: 0 - Shit

Ecco The Dolphin 2: 0 - See Ecco

Kid Chameleon: 5 - Awesome, the level warp in stage 2 still works.

Phantasy Star 2: 5 - Default rating

Phantasy Star 3: 1 - Ughhh

Phantasy Star 4: 5 - You know it baby

Yeah, I had Ecco and Ecco CD and hated both back in the day.  I guess I just never 'got' those games, although it was fun to swim around for awhile.

Did anyone ever beat the Ecco games?  Can it even be done?

Uh, it's been FOREVER since I played Genesis games, but did they always run at like 10fps with crazy slowdown or is this just bad emulation.  Sonic Spinball's framerate is wacky and all over the place.

Also I think I've been spoiled by the Sega Ages packs :(

They all ran fine for me. Comix Zone had some nasty glitches though.

What's with the bullshit fuzzy filter they put on the games? (I'm talking about the default appearance, not the smoothing option.) It's just sick and wrong that Phantasy Star IV on the Wii via component cables is sharper than Phantasy Star IV on the 360 via HDMI.

I want razor sharp chunky pixels, dammit!

p.s.
E-Swat is horrible.

Wait, there's some kind of filter on the graphics even without the smoothing? They said it'd be straight pixel scaling. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/MastahCrushed/Emote/emot-jerkbag.gif)

It's really sad that Phantasy Star III was so long and mediocre with no pay off that I couldn't justify the $100 price tag for Phantasy Star IV back in the day.  I've still never played it, probably one of the last 16-bit RPG gems left for me.  Maybe this is when I actually play it.

Scenester - I'd go in order, unlock I and play that, then II and IV. IV has a lot of references to older games in the series, so make sure to play that last... III doesn't have much to do with the main series, and it's not a horrible game (there were much worse RPGs released around that time), but it just doesn't compare at all to the others.

Tet - Make sure to play IV, it's an excellent game in every sense of the word.

I want to play Phantasy Star I->IV (I missed all the Genesis rpgs growing up; only played the SNES ones) but my attempt at II a few years ago left me cold as the dungeons were all confusing and the game was reaaaaaally grindy.  Plus tbh, the whole "we can only fit 'this' much text" per box makes it difficult for me to read the dialogue and enjoy it from a story perspective.

I think IV is more modern and playable from what I remember, but I'd feel wrong jumping into a series with continuity at the last game.

Man, Altered Beast is basically unplayable.  Offhand, I cannot think of a game that has aged as poorly as that.

The games are barely continuity, Bebpo. As much continuity as Star Ocean.

demi speaks the truth - as a PS fan from the beginning, it actually kinda frustrated me how little each game had to do with the others.

But IV references I more than any of the others (only a few references to II, and a slight nod to III). If you're up for playing 4 30-hours games, then by all means play them all in order. But if you want an overview, play the first and the fourth. The only caveat is that I is very old-school, and the grinding it takes (especially to get started) is pretty hardcore.

Altered Beast is very dull, but there are other games I think that held up much worse... Super Thunder Blade in particular, ugh.

The dungeons in II can definitely get confusing.  You have to remember that the game came with extensive color maps for most of the dungeons though.  I don't suppose they included that in the instruction booklet.

II is like the first one in the sense that if you don't at least sketch a rudimentary map of the dungeons you're in (or find a map online), you're going to do a lot of walking in circles. Uzo Island in particular is a colossal pain in the ass.

This is my favorite site for Phantasy Star info:

Just use the drop down menu under PS.

You ever see the guide/hint book that came with PSII?  It's like 60 full color pages with maps and old PC manual-style red filtered hints.  It was bad-ass.

Comix Zone is also one of the few games that actually looks okay with the godawful filter.

I know this is an old observation, but: it makes no sense that a free emulator can have a dozen different filter effects but Backbone's ports have all of one. I've been enjoying a bit of the original Phantasy Star, and putting the filter on it is almost funny: it blurs shit so badly the characters don't even have eyes anymore (not to mention some of the Genesis games where the filter more or less erases thin text).
