Title: WAT R U PLAYING?
Post by: Rman on March 13, 2009, 08:32:54 PM
I'm sticking with SFIV and Peggle Deluxe on XBLA.  I'm skipping RE5 this weekend and probably pick up later next week.

Deja Vu- Felt like playing an old adventure/mystery game so I chose this...

Uninvited- ...and this one too. I've never finished them in the past so now I'm going to try to now.

Vesperia- At the very end, finally. Right now I'm 80 hrs in the hard mode and gearing up for the final battle which may take place tonight. After that it's...

Fallout 3- Been holding off on this until I finished Vesperia. Can't wait!  :hyper

Street Fighter IV- My snack food of games.

Metal Slug 7- Ok so far. Kind of iffy on some of the levels as some moments seem too cluttered.

Also I picked up Resident Evil V and may put a little bit of time into it.

Lovin' RE5 so far, started on veteran. If I can bring myself away from it, I'll start the second DLC for TR:U I recently downloaded.

Chzo Mythos games -  Played 5 Days a stranger yesterday and just finished 7 Days a Skeptic.  Probably will finish the last two by tomorrow's end.

RE5 - Played 1-1.  Going to wait until it's dark to play more.  I get a lot of glare during the daylight which sucks for darker games so I play them at night.

Madworld - Playing a little here and there.

SF4
Musou Orochi Z
Resident Evil 5 (a bit, anyway...Mercenaries!)
Soul Calibur IV (going back to this after a break for a few months)

Was thinking of maybe finally starting on Devil May Cry 3 SE.  Never played DMC3 and it's been sitting in my collection along with the still-unplayed DMC4.  And I still have Ninja Gaiden (all three of 'em lol) to play.

SFIV ~ still a blast

Silent Hill Homecoming ~ finally unwrapped it after getting it for my wife for christmas. It's honestly better than I expected, but how the fuck are the character models seemingly uglier than SH3's? Environments are decent so far though, like the real-time transitions, even if they rip off the movie. Also, the music and sound effects are pretty ace...even if the monster/design is mediocre. shitgetsrustyalldoorsarelocked.jpeg

REV~ will probably open it up sometime this weekend. my experience purchasing it was so terrible, it made me lose all desire to play it. fuck toys r us.  :punch

^ugh, not playing anymore of it until they patch the achievements. good game though, in spite of its bugginess.

I started Tales of Vesperia earlier this week and of course started RE5, currently on chapter 4 on veteran. So far, RE5 is the best game I've played since.......Gears of war 2, or maybe even BioShock. yeah, its that good

also, Resistance and Patapon 2 psp

Wow Deja Vu is really short. I guess they figured throwing a ton of useless items at the player will confuse them long enough to artificially lengthen the game. Looking through Icom's history I see that they made a sequel that came out for Gameboy Color and Windows. I'll probably check that out next and see how it compares.
Title: Re: WAT R U PLAYING?

It also pretty much uses the same "make sure to have the right items at the right time, or you're screwed lol" mechanic. I would get the Mac versions btw.

"Baseball" on the Gameboy was awesome.  It was just an even simpler version of RBI Baseball.  And Baseball Stars 2 is amazing until the cpu starts cheating like a fucking asshole.  It's worse than Puzzle Quest.

I need to play MLB 09 more, but I'm awful at batting and can barely even manage a single.  One thing I really like about the game is how good it works with custom soundtracks.

Yes. I had one glitch where the style audio wouldn't go away until I rebooted, and of course the game doesn't recognize your custom playlists on the 360, so you have to go in before booting the game to start your music and then turn off all the playlists within the game. (Which brings up the point that it kind of sucks that you can't access the 360 guide from BC games.) Anyway, despite that one glitch that hasn't happened again, it plays pretty good on 360.

White Chamber is a pretty fun little adventure game. Very trippy and mind bending. I do agree with you about the anime-ish art. Didn't fit the game at all. Still, it's free and quite fun.

Yeah, I just finished it.  Was alright and good enough for the time required to play it.  I thought the voice acting was quite good for freeware and the puzzles were enjoyable.

Because there were only a few screens, it relied a little too heavily on "ok, you've done 1 trigger...so go back to every screen in the game and see if anything has changed", which I hate in games (same with the "you've done 1 trigger, go back and talk to every character again").  Also the story, while functional could've been a little more expanded (background of the artefact and stuff).

But for a free game it's good.

Today was PS3 day for me. I didn't boot up my 360, but I might in a minute just to see if the HD Remix patch is up.

Today was also PATCH DAY-- I downloaded patches for HD Remix, MGO, and Killzone 2, and it took longer than it should have for all of them. -_- PSN just sucks compared to 360, I'm sorry...it does.  The wait for MGO in particular was ridiculously, ridiculously, ludicrously long.  When I got the three-expansion pack download deal last week, it took half a day to download the previous patch, since I went the torrent route.  This time I did it from the server, and it still took hours.  Fucking insane.

But back to more positive things, I played MGO, HD Remix, Killzone 2 (multiplayer), Musou Orochi Z, and then some Soul Calibur IV. It's been months since I played the latter, and while I didn't beat any high-level players, I got really close...played one guy with level 88 and he barely beat me each time, and some 100 and 200+ guys that sadly (for them) also went to round three for both of us. I LOL'd. The game obviously takes skill to be at the top, but at the same time, it's just so "broken" in terms of how easy it is for a beginner or just generally clueless player to do well in comparison to a 2D fighter. Despite my whuppings I still managed to gain a rank in the end.

I went back to SF4 after this and whupped some ass of my own with Miss Li. One match I forgot who I was and picked Abel...the other guy picked Chun and I thought it was me! Same color and everything, LOL! I still got him though.

I'm playing Beyond Good & Evil, which is good so far. I'm only just heading to the factory, but the presentation is swell (dated, sure, but my fault for waiting so long to play it) and it's fun enough.

I'm also playing Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting. The one that came out for XBLA, like, three years ago. What can I say, Gamefly has yet to send me SFIV (although I did rent that last weekend. Hot.)

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup- Rogue-like gaming crack.

Dragon Quest (SNES)- The original is my most replayed RPG ever, but I've never played through the SNES remake. Now I am. I'm not quite digging the easier difficulty in this one though.

Fallout 3- Finally started playing this. The game has the most stunning use of the color brown I have seen so far in a game. At the moment I disarmed Megaton's bomb and am working on sidequests for the Wasteland Guide. While I can see myself sinking a lot of time into this, I am not a huge fan of how they handled the AP system. I kinda wish that they allowed a turnbase option similar to the older games rather than keeping it all in real time.

Street Fighter 4- Still playing this on the side.

Inazuma Eleven - getting closer to finishing this.  It's L5s best game.
Madworld - It's going pretty well
Kororinpa 2 - Dunno
Resistance PSP - Dunno

Going to play some Unreal Tourney 3 again tonight with the new Titan Pack update to check it out.

Will probably start 50 Cent, or get back to Star Ocean 4 this weekend after Madworld.  Probably play some Adventure games this weekend as well like The Path, Strongbad ep2 or Overclocked.  I started playing What Linus Bruckman Sees When his Eyes are Closed the other night and it's a genius concept but it seemed a bit boring to actually play so no idea if I'll actually play through it.

-SF4: Got knocked out of the 360 tournament last night by a great Chun-Li player; there was lag that factored in (he's in Australia), but only bitches whine.  I adjusted!  It was a close battle and he got my Chun, but I came back with Cammy to win the second match.  He got me again in the third and final match; it was really fucking fun!  Got further in the tourney than I would ever have expected to.  Still in the PS3 tournament too!

-RE5: A bit of mercenaries here and there.  Played split screen for the first time yesterday with a friend and got a few more achievements.  I doubt I'll go for 1000/1000, but I am looking to get all the weapons maxxed-out and still need to clear it on Professional.

-Unreal Tournament III: Like MGO last week, this wasn't so much playing as it was WAITING.  I decided to pick the game up again ($20 new) and try the new (free!) DLC pack that adds a bunch of stuff into the PS3 version.  It also adds in split screen play, which unfortunately is restricted to offline play, so after a few minutes, my friend and I went back to Halo 3.

huh?  I downloaded the Titan Pack expansion and played and it was fast as hell.  There's like one 30 second patch to 2.0 which adds trophies/split-screen/new GUI, but then the game has the fastest menus and is the quickest console FPS to jump right into a game out of any out there.

The main problem is that no one is playing the game.  You can get in games that have like 10 people, or coop campaign maps with 3 others, but huge 20+ person games are almost impossible to find.  Still the game is awesome when you're actually playing.  Best controlling FPS out there IMO.  Feels so good with a controller.

Wasn't so fast for me!  I also had to download an additional patch to get the game to the current version...the titan pack is 500mb and the patch is 93mb.  Wasn't lighting quick.

Nobody was ever playing this game, haha.   :-\  On top of that, if you want to play with the various mods, others need to have the same ones to play in your games.  The old UT2K4 would let you download the mods right away; this doesn't offer it.

What are the best UT3 mods, anyway?  I know I'd like to get the 3rd person view mod...

Finished Inazuma Eleven.  It's great and totally worth playing if/when it comes to the US if you like soccer at all (even if you suck at soccer games, it's ok.  I can't win in WE but I was fine here).  The only thing is the game is like I AM AN RPG throughout the whole thing with 20 hour+ story and stuff, but then the ending is literally like 15 seconds and totally unsatisfying for an rpg ending >_<

Also finished Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword this past weekend.  Great game as well.  Still the best use of the touch screen so far on DS.

Probably.  I mean it doesn't have that much competition.  GBA was cool but it didn't really have many classic 3rd party games as most devs were focused on console games.  Same with GB.  I wouldn't be surprised if the DS has a bigger library of titles released than GB+GBA already.

Can only speak from personal experience.  I only owned 5 games on Game Boy and GBC...neither portable did anything for me.  PSP is ok, but nothing I really want.

I don't buy many DS games as I don't play many portable games (3 to 4 a year maybe), but I've racked up 11 DS games over the years now with GTA being the latest purchase.

Beat Beyond Good & Evil last night. Fine game, better than I expected considering I imagined the hype for it was way over the top.

Likes:
-Presentation
-Score
-Sound effects
-Collecting stuff didn't feel like a chore
-No bullshit where the game is hard for the sake of making it a challenge. The game's fun. Fancy that!
-Brevity. 12 hours is about perfect for me.

Dislikes:
-That shitty mechanic where you use one control scheme for an entire game (and really, for every game you've ever played), and then WHOOPS WE FLIP DA SCRIPT DAT SHIT IS BACKWARDZ NOW, YO! Look, if you can't come up with innovative ways to make your main boss fight more difficult, don't do some stupid control scheme manipulation bullshit to make it seem more difficult, especially when the game's combat is based upon being incredibly simple.
-Story wasn't particularly fleshed out. Not a big deal for me, because the brevity is far more important to me, but it's not like I really understood why Jade ran an oprhanage, or what the hell Carlson and Peters was (until I looked at Double H's inventory).
-The hovercraft handled kind of poorly, particularly during some of the racing sequences.

that's what is making me hesitant about dc universe

i want to play, but i don't want to keep paying $15 a month when i don't have the time and forget to cancel my subscription

i keep saying they need to rate these things - $5 for 10 hrs or less a month, $10 for 20 hrs, $15 for unlimited play, and sell blocks of playtime by the hour

is DC Universe going to be pay-to-play? I thought for both that and The Agency they were thinking about a different way of dealing with it.

I've never been into an MMO game and the last ones that interested me were Neocron (which I played the beta of, which sucked) Planetside (ditto, but better) and WW2 online (dabbled with after big into BF1942, quickly dropoped).  DC Universe looks like MMO Crackdown with more action based combat while The Agency looks like a spy themed shooter online.  If they aren't pay to play, I can see myself getting into those two and playing every once in a while; I just can't see myself playing a game as regularly that most MMO require.

DS is a case where it has a lot of amazing games, but I'm not a fan of the device itself.  I still think having two screens is completely distinguished mentally-challenged.  The worst is that Nintendo is probably going to stick with the two screens for the next system too for BC purposes and it's going to be a cycle of badly designed handhelds.

On DS, I like the Ace Attorney games (and the first three are GBA ports, lolz) and the Castlevania games, plus Space Invaders Extreme, Rhythm Tengoku Gold, and some of the puzzle games like Tetris DS, Panel De Pon, and Meteos.  But I could live without this system.  There are far more games I like on PSP.

I don't think NSMB is bad, I just think it's highly generic and soulless.  It's a good game overall, i just can't see it actually provoking emotions.

Drill Dozer>NSMB

I agree with you, and feel NSMB doesn't reach the lofty heights set by the other 2D Marios, but the game definitely has its moments. The walljumping was a great addition to the 2D Mario games, and some of the level design... specifically the desert world with the moving platform and the koopa troopas falling on it, were genius.

Hmm, I feel that way about the PSP, never was a fan of the controls, the ergonomics, or the screen with the heavy ghosting. But it has a fair amount of games I'm into on it, more than most people give it credit for. Absolutely fucking love my DS, way more than any home system this gen.

I feel that way about the PSP and the DS.  I love their game libraries but both systems have problems.

DS
-Hurts my hands if I play for long sessions (cramping on the non-pen hand holding the system)
-The two screen thing is pointless for most games and just a waste of space
-The sound chip sucks, but great speakers
-The 3d sucks
-Limited voice acting because of cart format

PSP
-Ghosting ghosting ghosting
-Black level sucks
-Analogue nub sucks
-UMD sucks because of load times (thankfully memory card playing fixes this)
-Awesome sound chip but terrible speakers

Well, past initial reactions, it's no Super Mario Galaxy (which did manage to evoke feelings of playing SMB3 for the first time). But it's a great 2d Mario that isn't a port of some existing game, and I'm actually enjoying a game on this handheld piece of shit. It's damned awesome.

Problems 1 and 2 are solved in the 3000 series.  The screen is SOOOOOO much better.  The ghosting is reduced significantly (in line with modern LCD panels) while the contrast ratio is miles beyond the original screen.

Yeah but the 3000 has interlace problems.  I'm not will to trade one problem for another.  I'm definitely up for re-buying a PSP, but Sony needs to make a fixed 3000 screen model first.  Hopefully that will be the 4000.

Even Sony knows they fucked up when a 4000 model is already coming. Plus you can't mod 3000s, so eff dat.  If you are playing on a vanilla PSP, you are playing with a gimped system.

I was actually going to pick up a 3000 just before the rumors of a new PSP (the 4000, PSP2 and slide screen PSP all came out near each other).  I'm hoping that whatever is planned, it isn't too long a wait.  The nub on my 2000 is messed up and the screen has a weird burn, halo-like effect to it.

btw, superior version of Tenchu 4 is out tomorrow.

Banjo N&B. Just built a bouncing, flying dreadnought with homing missiles. That aspect of the game is fucking awesome, but it also highlights how weak the missions are, since this dreadnought is going to see much less usage than the basic chopper with a tray. And collecting notes and boxes with parts is such shit.

I'm getting near the end of Resistance PSP and probably about a quarter through Killzone 2 and halfway through 50cent.  Unfortunately all these games involve shooting and I get burnt out on shooting pretty quick, so just been reading and watching some movies between shooting sessions.

I keep feeling like starting DQ3 or DQ7 to have some non-shooting variety, but I don't really want to start another game before I finish what's currently on my plate.

It's Harvest Moon meets Animal Crossing. A super massive collect-athon of recipes, clothing, minerals, food, etc etc. Grow pets and they can find even more stuff for you. It has acheivements, it has quests, it has an ending. It's one of the highest rated games on casual sites this year.

Did you install those graphical mods?  It's pretty impressive how much they improve the graphics.  I wonder how the modders were able to rip the assets from the GC version.

Yes.

I don't like god of war, but GoW II is one of my favorite PS2 games and GoW PSP is one of my favorite psp games.  GoW was good for laying the foundation, but the other games make the combat more fun and are just so much better in level design/story/graphics.

Some people prefer the combat in GoW1 because it's more technical or hard or something, but the combat in GoW II/PSP is more fun.

That's what I keep hearing, but I always like to go through the game on my own first before doing coop on my next run. I'm just annoyed with having to lose due to a random death of my shoddy AI partner. They really should've had the SP like Gears to where if your partner goes down they're just heavily wounded. The game itself looks great and I can deal with the controls, but the forced partner keeps me from enjoying it the way that I want to.

One particular section in-game aside, I had no problems with Sheva.

-Give her one or two weapons to use the entire game and nothing else; ammo is not an issue any longer.  Don't give her a stun rod.  I let her use the handgun the entire time.
-Keep her on "cover" and don't bother with "attack" unless you want her to switch weapons.  (Then switch back to cover)
-Let her use the rifle in sections where it's needed.  She does great with it.
-Give her health power-ups.  As long as you have her on "cover," she will heal you when you need it.

Once you have enough cash and points to use for buying extra stuff, give your A.I. partner a powerful gun with unlimited ammo and it won't matter anymore.

Pikmin got tossed in favor of new arrivals STREET FIGHTER IV and also Retro Game Challenge.

Retro Game Challenge sure does have some annoying stuff in it. Star Prince was fun. The racing games stink. The RPG is fine, but it's weird going from all of these challenges that take about a minute to complete to "take a few hours to grind so you can beat a boss that will take you a while to find."

I'm playing Ninja Gaiden now.

Street Fighter IV has HADOKEN, so <3.

I installed Dawn of War 2 and, err, i couldn't control the camera at all. My PC was playing up a fair bit that day, so i assume something was going screwy.

Does it pan with the mouse movement no matter what you do? I forget exactly what I did to fix it, but there was a setting in the game menu that looked completely unrelated, but it somehow made the camera usable.

What do you think of DOW 2 so far?

I've only dabbled with it for about an hour so all I can say is that the graphics are fantastic.  What do you think of the complaints that some EBers have had about DOW 2 being a watered down strategy game and a major step down from Company of Heroes?

Other people on podcasts have mentioned that DOW 2 is enjoyable as long as you accept the fact that it's more of an action RPG/strategy hybrid rather than a hardcore strategy game.  Is that true?

To be honest, I don't mind the lack of basebuilding. There's nothing wrong with resource crafting and farming, but since nearly every other RTS I've ever played has focused on that, this seems pretty fresh. It does feel scaled down, though, and definitely more tactical than strategic.

I'm not an RTS expert by any stretch, though, but I'm liking it quite a bit. I think calling it an action rpg/rts hybrid is spot on, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

World of Goo- cool beans.  Its miraculous that such a polished and beautiful game was done by two guys.

Bit Trip Beat- pong is relevant again.  Keeps throwing new dots and patterns that challenge my beliefs of what this game is capable of.  Some bullshit here and there which is going to require muscle memory to pass.

More pro evolution soccer- really impressive online options for Wii. Take this template and build on it with WiiSpeak and game invites and I might never sorta maybe want an xbox.  I'm really scared to play above amateur difficulty and the ancillary stuff goes way over my head, but the controls are so damn sexy.  At first I was lost but I remember the littlest things from the tutorials that really keep thing dynamic and interesting.  If anything I'd love a more arcadey soccer title with this exact scheme so I don't have to care about formation and player ratings and all this other whosuhwasets.

360 backwards compatibility is such trash.  I want to replay Red Dead Revolver without hooking up my old Xbox, and it's listed as a BC title, but it's almost unplayable with models disappearing and reappearing all the time.

and the PC version of Beyond Good and Evil I got has graphical problems and no controller support.  It's like a sign to hook up the old Xbox or something.
