That's really chilling to look through...  I've always wanted to see what it's like there.

If I was going to die of cancer or something, I would say goodbye to my family, climb to the top of the sarcophagus, fall asleep, and never wake up.

i liked the old political posters/art/books/newspapers left behind

also he is constantly setting his geiger counter right on top of things that are dangerously radioactive.  i wonder if he threw it away after or if it messed up some of the readings

Pretty amazing how much vegetation there still is despite all the radiation.

It looks like plants just don't give a fuck, basically.

I can't believe they got that close to the reactor.

Having been exposed to radiation from cancer treatments in the past, I wonder if it would even be advisable for someone like me to go there. He's using a different metric than what I am familiar with though. I was exposed to 46 gray(s) - most of which went right through my spinal cord. My doc told me that anything above 50 gray(s) on the spinal cord and you start significantly increasing the risk of paralysis. Complete paralysis happens around 75 gray(s). There's gotta be a difference though since cancer treatment radiation is so localized.

I'm now confused. Radiation is complicated business.

Man, that's really amazing and scary at the same time. How the hell does that Yuri fella not have supercancer (or superpowers) yet after 8 years of on-and-off exposure to that place?

There's a good documentary episode, some English guy that goes around eating dangerous food. He went to Chernobyl and got tricked into drinking some brandy made with contanimated plums. As soon as he found he had a look on his face like shit there's 5 years of my life gone or he maybe of even said it.

Theres broken glass everywhere in Pripyat, not just cause of vandalism, but also down to the fact that all the windows had to be left open in the town, to stop pockets of radiation collecting indoors.

interesting

Google fails me, but I watched a show on Discovery that showed how nature is taking back Chernobyl. Animal living in the abandoned homes.

One thing they touched on was the timing of the meltdown. It happened right as springtime was starting off with trees newly budding and the animals that had just came back to the area from their winter migration. Scientists were shocked to see nature thrive after the disaster.

The only mutation that was discovered was a set of birds where normally a tuft of blue feathers were had turned red. But they noted that the birds with the blue tufts killed off these mutations because they were seen as outsiders in their population.

Very interesting show if you can find it.

There's different ways of measuring radiation depending on what it's being exposed to.  A roentgen is 1/100 of a gray.  This tourist says I think that 500 roentgens was fatal but cancer treatments are highly localized so maybe that's why they can get really high levels of radiation?

If you can get hold of it, I recommend watching the nz docu The Nuclear Comeback (http://www.thetvset.co.nz/projects.php?id=15). In this, among other things, they film inside the Chernobyl control room that's INSIDE the Sarcophagus. It was really spooky, I was getting uncomfortable just watching it.

Watched this version now, quite heavily cut down for TV, the Sellafield incident was left out and the entire section about New Zeeland as well. But nice that this film crew had the same Pripyat guide as the guy in the OP link  :ussrcry

Okay, there's about a 75% chance that I'm going to take this Chernobyl tour during my Europe trip.

I went on the DMZ tour thing while in Korea--it was pretty weird.  This one looks interesting as hell too.
