Title: Should I walk out or give my two weeks?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on April 24, 2009, 10:14:06 AM: I've kind of been abused like a donkey the past month and was planning on turning in my notice today.

However, my LONE keyholder is acting like he's going to quit, which would mean in addition to 30+ hour work schedule I was likely going to have to maintain on weekends - I'm going to be working open to close on weekdays too.

My supportive DM sent me this message minutes ago:

"done scanning yet i want to be golfing on a day like this"

Uh. Not sure if the reference is worth this.

Fine. Just call in your DM, tell him it's an emergency. When he gets there, throw the keys on the counter, kick over a magazine rack, and storm out. Make sure you have a friend in the back of the store with a small video camera to capture this gold on.

I walked away from a contractor position once and I was officially put on some sort of blacklist by the contractor and the company that I was working at... lol.

At first I was like, "huh, what?" because the thing I signed said I could terminate at any time without warning (first real job I'd ever had). But after 2 minutes I realized I didn't give a shit because I walked away for a better job.

Even in a shitty economic climate, you're getting used and abused. What is worse is even if things get better, economically, your boss (and their bosses) know that they have a footstool in you because if you worked 12-14 hour shifts for a few weeks, you can do it for a few weeks more, etc. So they'll cut back on hiring you additional help because of your hard (read: foolish) work ethic.

Not sure if Wilco is salaried or not, but most managers in retail are, which kinda sucks in the end since you may not qualify for overtime in some cases.

It only makes sense that they would try and squeeze more and more out of salaried employees as their relevance dwindled. Why were you so optimistic about this job in the first place? Not to say "Oh you suck you should have seen this coming", but I never quite understood why you thought it would work out well.

I have not put in my two weeks - yet.

On June 5th, I'm leaving the country for a week to embark on a cruise to the Caribbean with my brother (who will be turning 21-years-old on the boat). This was already in the cards and I e-mailed my time off request weeks ago.

This weekend however, I reached out to a family friend that works for Discovery Communications and he has agreed to put me in contact with acquaintances in production. He is going to give me a foot in the door with other folks - on the basis that I go get "learned up" on Final Cut Pro (he happens to be a instructor at one of the programs I was looking to attend to) and slog through an internship with Discovery, National Geographic or one of their independent contractors (both organizations acquire rights from other companies for documentaries, footage, etc.).

I've been squirreling away a little money, so I have enough money to buy a - yuck! - MacBook, partially pay college credits and survive off an internship. I set up appointments on my two days off with campus counselors and getting all my ducks in a row.

I will be putting my two weeks in a week before my vacation (giving a full two weeks), so that gives me a projected date of May 22nd of formally resigning. That way I don't have to work my full two weeks and the way pay works, I would get a paycheck after I return from the Caribbean.

Threaten to quit, then tell them that you'll stay on if they bump you down to an hourly keyholder. Take the opportunity to explain about the extra money you'd be making at that rate with the criminal amount of hours they have you working... not that they don't already know that.

I went to two campuses today, trying to research costs, where I need to go for credits, etc. I think I will have a final solution on that by mid-Month. I'd also like to speak to some more local professionals on what skills and education they're looking for before making my dive. Regardless, Memorial Day will be my last day at work.
