Holy crap at "Next-Gen" numbers.

killzone + halo wars already gone

Aerosmith? ???

Archie devastated... Aerosmith selling more than Rock Band as usual. GH :bow

The game was probably on clearance for $10.
-
mmhmm, sure
-
where's Killzone 2
-
Fuck, it's NPD day?
Those HW numbers (minus the DS) are pretty damn pathetic.
-
Wow, I figured the 360 would be high-
Wait, what the fuck am I doing in a sales thread??!
-
Low hardware numbers are not surprising, April is historically the worst month, year in, year out. The Wii number stands out in that although it once again easily trounces the competition, it is not astronomically high. Perhaps demand is finally levelling off? I don't believe there were any supply issues.
-
Comical
-
Awesome, there should be some great price drops and gaming deals coming up.
-
That's true.
Every day but one in any given month: A 360 is going to cost you $300 + at least $200 more for 4 years of Live + $100 for wireless. So it's really $600. Might as well buy a PS3 at $399.
NPD Day: What did you expect? 360 is only half the price of PS3.

It's amazing how Patcher was wrong this time. He projected that all four consoles would sell twice as they did this month. So yeah, analysts lulz etc etc.
its fucking patcher, why do you give a shit?
-
It's pretty sad for MS when their $199 console can't outsell a $400 console by a large margain.
It's time for MS to announce a new console before the next Ps3 pricedrop hits.
And the Wii hw sales dropped the most, relatively speaking.
-
time for MS to announce a new console before the next Ps3 pricedrop hits.
given what has happened with sales of the X360 after price drops, why is there this assumption that a PS3 price drop will send its sales into the stratosphere?
Because in the end, a Playstation console is more popular than a MS console.
Both consoles are selling at the same pace worldwide. One being $199, the other being $399.
Why is that?
-

sony are only forecasting 3million more units than last year, where they sold 10million. they can't be expecting much from a price drop so I'm thinking it has to be $349, or a very late year $299

Nintendo's sales victory means that no matter what, we (gamers) all lose.
-
I like NPD as its the one time that everyone agrees that the X360 costs $199 and not $380 because that's how much you have to pay to really have the machine do what it's supposed to.
Especially since every single month it's pointed out that the average transaction price for a 360 console is $270 or more.

They should have called it "Nintendo's Excitetruck2 w/Mario and Zelda" and it would have sold 5 million copies.

just drop the goddamn PS3's price already

Sony just posted a billion dollar loss. Not in a division, as a company. It isn't the same as Microsoft's H&E bleeding red ink when there's Office and Windows there to more than compensate. A price drop could still happen, but it's easier said than done.

Yea it seems that their game division actually lost less money compared to the last time (more than half) and a price drop could push it up again. But the new numbers could be hard to follow since it should be the debut of the whole "Entertainment Division" thing.
We'll see what happens though.

Nintendo #1 again. Another win for real gaming. :bow
-
Funny thing is that Wii+Wii fit+Wii play costs nearly 400$ and people are buying it like crazy.
The question is:Do people feel that PS3 is worth 400$?
Obviously not
Last time PS3 was at 120-130k it had 600$ price tag and now 200$ cheaper goes back to the same spot.
-
The system still needs to be a part of the high end CE market, so the Nintendo route probably isn't a realistic one. But I do doubt we will see many more projects of the KZ2 sort. Ideally (unrealistic, of course) MS and Sony would get over themselves and partner up. And hey, maybe avoid new media formats for a while. I don't care much if there is no PS4, but I'd like to see companies like Sucker Punch and certain internal teams stay well funded and with some freedom to do what they want.
-
Well, what I'm getting at is that they need the power bit, or it won't be of much value to their other product lines, like TV and sound systems. But as long as they stay away from Proprietary Dream Engines and Extra HD physical media, it should be doable.
-
MS+Sony making up a console together is my dream too will never happen though.
Nintendo really fucked this whole generation up. I can see MS and Sony following its steps in the future (waggle, low-end hardware (low-end hardware in 2011 is pretty much high-end now BTW)).
Who woulda think it?
What would Sony and Microsoft do together? Twice the boring cliches FPS's, just on one system?
-
hollywood you fail at both english and trolling, just quit now
-
Excitebots numbers are super sad. I guess Nintendo has enough corpses resulting from their stealth launch strategy to realise its never going to work. At least give it a fucking commercial.
edit: although if we go by sega's example, advertising your wii game caps sales at like 70,000. Jesus.
-
damn so what can Sony do?
pricedrop PS3?
release PS4 fast?
forget the PS brand altogether(andrews)?

look on the bright side, Wii sales are decreasing!
-
But as long as they stay away from Proprietary Dream Engines and Extra HD physical media
Yes, Sony always has way too much proprietary tech in their consoles. If you are familiar with economics, they have a high asset specificity in comparison to MS when it comes to Williamson's model
-
but the ps3 is twice as expensive as the 360 yet is only being outsold by a few thousand each month. once a pricedrop hits it'll be equal with the 360 in sales, perhaps surpassing it :violin
-
Sony is done for.
MGS4 didn't help them, LBP didn't help them, Killzone 2 didn't help them and FF13 is multiplatform eitherway. I don't even count shit like Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Lair etc.
They don't have their own blockbuster hits like Microsoft had Halo 3 or Gears of War 2.
3rd party games not only bomb horrendously on PS3 but they are also an afterthought for publishers - Fallout 3, Orange Box, BioShock etc.
When you have your most hyped, beloved, advertised, AAA+ titles struggle to reach 1M copies sold and other AAA titles struggling to move beyond 300K you know you knee deep in feces.
And to think this is all coming from the hegemony era of PS2 where Sony was untouchable.
Un-fucking-believable.
It's really not that bad dude. Konami just revealed that MGS4 sold 4.7 million copies. Most of the other hyped Sony games, while not breaking the bank, sold respectable amounts. Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet can still be seen on many PAL charts and will definitely end up selling at least 3 million copies each, without counting the future Greatest Hits releases and other such discounts. Other games like Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted sold like 1.5 million copies each, made some profit and have sequels coming up this year. Infamous and Heavy Rain will probably meet the same fate.
Third party games definitely do not bomb on PS3 if you look at the performance of basically all the latest big multiplatform games in the last year and a half. Sometimes the PS3 version sells more on a worldwide basis. Third parties simply cannot ignore the platform.
Plus Sony has a little something called Gran Turismo 5 which promises to be the best selling PS3 game yet.
I really want to see a price drop ASAP, but so far I don't think Sony's performance for this gen is all that catastrophic. There's still some tremendous potential left to be untapped with lower price points, and with a slimline system redesign among others.
-

The Konami number for MGS4 is so bs.
At least 1.5 million of that number is over shipping, where did the copies go seriously? It certainly didn't do that in charts, but it's another one of those Sony games that must do like 2 million sales in some written off country like Andorra, right. And LBP and Killzone 2 doing 3 million must be a joke prediction clearly. "at least" lol
Ratchet did not sell 1.5 million, it had shipped a million and change very close to launch, when it was charting like crap.
Seriously. The numbers for Ps3 game sales 1st party are always kinda funny, they might be selling on par with stuff like Army of Two or whatever, but somehow, the game will hit really big numbers, somehow.
I do think GT5 is gonna be a good seller, but considering how long it has been, how the hardware sales have been, how stuff just completely changed, i don't think it's gonna be doing anything near what it used to do before when kids would also buy Gt5, the Pokemon of cars.
-
The answer is bundles, especially in Europe...
For some reason Europe is Sony bundle land,PS3,PSP,PS2 included.
As for GT5,i would move hardware in EU if prologue wasn't released
-
Because in the end, a Playstation console is more popular than a MS console.
Both consoles are selling at the same pace worldwide. One being $199, the other being $399.
Why is that?
The average selling price of a 360 is nearly $300. And this is an NPD thread, not a worldwide sales thread.
-
ok, I don't really follow sales so I may be wrong, but isn't Sony still selling the PS3 at a loss or making minimal profit?
whatever the case, nothing ever really changes. Nintendo stuff sells a lot, everyone else doesn't. Sony loses faster than Microsoft. When sales eventually slow down for Nintendo, they will release another overpriced piece of hardware and dominate then.
-
But as long as they stay away from Proprietary Dream Engines and Extra HD physical media
Yes, Sony always has way too much proprietary tech in their consoles. If you are familiar with economics, they have a high asset specificity in comparison to MS when it comes to Williamson's model
Sony's love of proprietary tech doesn't even make sense. Neither the PS2 nor the PS3 outperformed off the shelf PC hardware.
It's like Sony spent a whole bunch of money just to make programmers' lives more difficult.
-
Aparently they are losing aprox 40$ per PS3
This is something I failed to notice in my couple of reports on Sony's earnings report yesterday. ITmedia, covering Sony's Tokyo earnings briefing from yesterday, has a quote from CFO Nobuyuki Oneda stating that the PS3's cost to Sony is still about 10% higher than the system's price. This is current as of the end of March.
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/05/15/sony_ps3_profitability/
No surprise there, system price dropped 200$ within first year, that is huge...
If it was up to them PS3 would still cost 600$,but real world thought otherwise.
-
In other words, a price drop isn't likely for the short term, but possibly something by fall.

Those software numbers for Europe can't be real. Look at the hardware numbers for Europe in that link at Gaf.
Sony sells less hardware in all of Europe every month than they do in the US. They can't be selling that much software if they aren't even selling that much hardware.
It's really funny how Sony has been using magical numbers from Europe to proselytize to its fans this gen. How the mighty has fallen!
-
Sony failing feels almost natural. Two generations at the top, it was bound to come down. Microsoft has got to be fucking salty about Wii, though. This was supposed to be the Xbox generation, and Microsoft sacrificed a lot while gunning squarely for a company and brand that practically committed suicide anyway. Between the massive blunder that was the PS3 launch and first year and the RROD fiasco, it seems unfair to give Nintendo all the credit for its own success.
-
MS could do nothing about Wii's success but they shot themselves in the foot with the RROD fiasco. They could have been the second profitable company this gen.
-
uh, all credit should go to Nintendo. Nintendo managed to capture lowest common denominator, something that the 360, PS3 or whatever other game system would not have done. The 360 has done a great job already capturing the crowd that actually plays video games, the same people who bought the PS2 or whatever last gen. Nintendo got old people and other groups that generally who don't play video games. The people who actually played video games last gen have moved on to the 360, PS3 or whatever. People who only play games on the Wii are the aforementioned groups of non-gamers or the people who want Nintendo to ream their asshole.
-
You underestimate how many people went from PS2 to Wii. There were a shitton of PS2 owners who used to get by on the latest Spongebob game and maybe some Ratchet, but don't bother with PS360.
-
The people who make games should just listen to my next-door neighbor, who says:
"Why doesn't someone just make a system that plays all the games"
WHY INDEED
-
Universal game console is like single-payer health care... it'll never happen!

The Konami number for MGS4 is so bs.
If Konami is HAPPY with the numbers, however, there is no problem (regardless of what they may really be).

The people who actually played video games last gen have moved on to the 360, PS3 or whatever. People who only play games on the Wii are the aforementioned groups of non-gamers or the people who want Nintendo to ream their asshole.
I don't know about that. I know a lot of families who owned PS2s and Gamecubes last generation who are sticking with Wii for this one. It's in part because it's the only game system the wives understand and that the wives can play with their mothers (and of course husbands tolerate it because it keeps the wife happy, and because they think that it might open the door to buying a real system) but there's also the kid appeal which neither of the other two can really compete with. It's a safe system.
-
I was going to mention kids, but as you said, it's bought for them and not a choice they make themselves.
The people who make games should just listen to my next-door neighbor, who says:
"Why doesn't someone just make a system that plays all the games"

PC :rock
except the games not on PC and the ones that don't work on Vista :rock
and games on the DS that probably won't work well without the touch screen :rock
and people who only have a mac and only play Blizzard games :rock

so yeah, PC :rock
-
Because it's a corporation out to make some mad money and have a bigger slice of the market without having to compete on the terms set by the competition. It's a bit sad, but hey, at least there is amusement to be had in seeing the poorly hidden agony of belligerent Nintendo fanboys who were desperate to see Nintendo win.

Why the fuck has Nintedo dropped the ball on their own lineup?
Why bother releasing new games when they can sit on sales of Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart until the end of time?
-

That pretty much is their line of thinking, unfortunately. It makes business sense, of course, but it certainly isn't a good thing for us.
Reggie noted that the "hardcore gamer" can never be satisfied, and that may be true, but they haven't even been trying. There hasn't been a single first party Nintendo game I've really enjoyed since Mario Galaxy in 2007. Their 2008 lineup was beyond pathetic.

I wouldn't even fucking mind the last-gen graphics. I just want a new Zelda game :bawl
Well the new DS Zelda game has graphics from 2 generations ago. :lol

I think it helps if you stop making unnecessary distinctions. I have purchased about 8 retail and alot of ware games this year. All enjoyable. Two are first party. Why is it imperative that Nintendo has to provide a torrent of games when I can get my fix from various providers?
-
The one thing I never understand about game release patterns is when people think there are game release patterns.
-
I think it helps if you stop making unnecessary distinctions. I have purchased about 8 retail and alot of ware games this year. All enjoyable. Two are first party. Why is it imperative that Nintendo has to provide a torrent of games when I can get my fix from various providers?
Well, simple...
Third party software on the Wii is, by and large, a waste of time. I would much rather play such games on a more powerful platform and, unless the game is of extremely high quality, I will simply avoid Wii third party releases. Nintendo, on the other hand, will only release games for the Wii console (obviously) and, as such, I would actually like to see some effort placed into software fans of traditional game titles might enjoy. Nintendo is capable of making incredible software, but most of their internal development seems to be focused on casual titles (the "Wii--" series) or mediocre sequels to already uninteresting Gamecube titles (Battalion War 2, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Animal Crossing, Mario sports titles, etc). Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and Smash Bros are their best efforts thus far. Considering the machine was released in 2006 and it is now 2009, the lack of high quality Nintendo software is a bit of a drag.
Of course, I'm well aware that you don't feel that way and have different standards, so I wouldn't expect agreement. That's simply my point of view on the matter.

the last time i was in a gamestop someone was returning halo wars for that exact reason, didnt know it was an rts

Halo Wars was still the #7 or so selling 360 title. KZ2 was #4 for PS3 I think.

You're not really giving Nintendo credit there. I actually doubt the old people demographic matters all that much in this case, even if they make it seem like it does. They capitalized on image and marketing more than ANYTHING else, something 360 or PS3 didn't do. They're selling to the same people who buy iPods and Macs, even though they're really less functional and more expensive than their counterparts, but they have brand value. Nintendo created brand value, Microsoft and Sony didn't.
-
They're selling to the same people who buy iPods and Macs
Bullshit. Looking at sales one could possibly make the argument that they are selling to everyone, but really, the brunt of the customer base here is the same type that buys a Dell at Best Buy because it comes bundled with a "good enough" monitor and printer. I'd imagine Oprah has helped quite a bit, too.

Those people are the ones still buying PS2's dude (which sold more than Ps3 funny enough.) Although I'm sure some of the Wii sales come from that, the fact is that the image of the product is pretty much more important than the content itself. If every single thing else was the same, motion control, Wii Fit, all that and Nintendo instead made a hulking black electronic looking console that looked like a Blu Ray players, they would be dead to rights now. Image is everything. They took advantage of doing what Apple did to the MP3 player market and brought it to the videogame market, and created an image and brand value.
-
I'm not disputing that image is important or that marketing has been very cleverly designed, I'm disputing the claim that they are selling to the Mac crowd. Ntards are in the company of soccer moms and whipped husbands for this round.

What do you define the Apple crowd as? I define them as a group of people who care more about the image or marketing performance than necessarily functionality. Wanting the different looking product or buying into innovation marketing. I won't dispute the type of people they're selling to includes what you say, but I sincerly doubt thats a huge chunk of their sales.
-

Exactly, they're selling to the old PS2 crowd
