A few reputable sources had articles saying he's dead, but they withdrew them and are sticking with the hospitalization. Maybe this is just a rumor.

My mom lived a few blocks from one of Barry Gordy's houses, where the Jacksons would come to hang out/play in between rehearsals. She said all the kids in the neighborhood would be lined along the gate of the place, trying to catch a glimpse of Michael but he was never outside with his brothers

Single handedly influenced my generation's style of dance and brought them to relevance/prominence. Every college performance I watched was a nod to his greatness. All the best dancers I ever knew all credit him as the inspiration behind their styles -- and almost all the dancers I ever knew found roots in his lockin and tightness of delivery.

In fairness, Guybrush's comment was more of a brainfart moment than a slur against homosexuals.  Anyway, you can read about it in Outside Links.

WTF?

Jackson, James Brown, Diana Ross, etc...they were icons even then, to many blacks growing up at the time. Music played a very important role in the civil rights era. To me personally as a 22yo, Say It Loud doesn't mean much. But to my mom or anyone else growing up in the 60s it had an entirely different importance and relevance.

I was thinking about it just now, and you know how people say "I grew up listening to/watching <celebrity>?"  Well, I honestly couldn't think of a time from the year I was born until I reached adulthood that Jackson wasn't on the radio/television/movies in some fashion.  And I don't mean in the gossip rags, I mean actively producing new work.  From The Jackson 5 straight through to Dangerous, I literally grew up watching and listening to this guy.

Not entirely unexpected, though.  You can't do the clinically insane things he did to his face and body and expect to outrun the side effects forever.

So...

Will Weird Al Yankovic retire "Eat It" and "Fat" from his live setlist?
Is the Lewis Black joke about Jacko being the punchline to everything not funny anymore?
Will Sega put the arcade and Genesis versions of the Moonwalker video game on the Wii Virtual Console in his honor?
Will Jim Rome spend half of his show tomorrow berating the clones for trying to make a joke out of this?

I think what is so sad about Michael is he was so innocent. All of the accusations aside, he really did maintain a child like wonder and view of the world that is hard not to be envious of. I'm such a jaded fuck that it's encouraging to know there are people out there that always see the glass half full even when things are going really bad.

That's a real post made by a real person. Aren't they now saying that the cardiac arrest might have stemmed from Demerol? Real innocent stuff for sure.

'innocent 'til proven guilty' would be so much more meaningful in a society where millionaires weren't able to settle out of court and use lawyers and the media to harass the crap out of their accusers. See also: Kobe Bryant.

Bit of a tangent here, but I I remember while I lived in Sydney, there was a spouse battery case involving a young, very rich entrepreneur (Brit, I think). The judge actually went on record stating that he would not sentence the guy since his business would prove too costly for Australia to lose.

I personally think that whole thing was a big money grab.  Just a calculated move for more money.

He agreed to do a rape kit test, voluntary lie detector test, etc.  And after all of that, the accuser would not testify at trial.  That just doesn't add up, man.

But I do pity him because of what his father did to him as a child. I don't think he would have turned into a troubled person if it wasn't for the fact that his dad abused him. He should have gotten help though.

what you think of this

Quote
*sigh*
n1ggas is reacting emotionally, instead of rationally, nothing about mikes death is going to change anything, if he died 20 years from now, instead of today, it would be the same result, people would be honoring him as a legend, singing his song's, doing tributes and all that....WHENEVER he died, it was going to be long after the fact, of his legacy being set in stone
pac left UNANSWERED QUESTIONS with his passing, he left a VOID in rap music
yall keep going into "more people listened to MJ so when it's really not about who's a bigger icon
to make another analogy, so maybe some of you can understand:
i'd say richard pryor/george carlin are two of the greatest comedians of all time....they died, people mourned, people payed tribute, people cited influence, nothing about "comedy" changed, with either of their passing, their legacies were already cemented and accounted for, their deaths were just the closing chapters to great stories
had dave chappelle died, a tragic death during the filming of "chappelle's show" at the height of it's popularity, his death would have changed the landscape of comedy, and left a question mark as to what could of been, he only would have been like 29 years old....you can tell me you can't understand the logic of this with a straight face
dave dying in his prime, would have had a way bigger impact, than rich or carlin, even tho they are by far the bigger icons

I see his point, definitely Himu.

In terms of general world impact obviously MJ's death is far bigger, like Elvis or Lennon.

On Tupac though, sure a void was created in the genre that definitely remains. He wasn't the first or last hypocritical rapper to mix gangsta imagery with socially conscious messages. But I'd agree that since his death no one has replaced/surpassed him as an artist (in hip hop). That's not to say no one has made better hip hop than him, just that for me personally no rapper has made more of an impact on me.

But that void only effects one genre of music. MJ, Lennon, and Elvis were bigger than genres. If Tupac had lived longer and accomplished more who knows (he wouldn't have reached their levels obviously, but he could have had a huge impact if he lived long enough to "grow up" imo)
Title: Re: Michael Jackson is dead

Although the premise of the thread is entirely idiotic, I think still believe it bears good discussion.

I mean, MJ has done it all.

But Tupac's death affected and still affects hip hop to this day.

Hip hop fans still carry this question 13 years after his death,"What would Pac think of modern rap?" "How would rap be different today if he (and this is important as well) and Biggie didn't die?"

And it really gets you thinking.

I think there's two different forms of impact here. MJ's death has impacted me emotionally, and while Tupac's death did back then, it wasn't nearly on par with this. However, Pac's death DEFINITELY left a scar in the music he left behind. I can't say the same for MJ because, like I said, he did it all.

I really don't give a fuck about anything else good he did because nothing can offset that in my mind. There may be worse crimes, but there is nothing that instils greater revulsion in me. How did he rape little kids? There has never been an ounce of quantitative proof that he raped or molested anyone and it was always pure media drivel. If you honestly believe that the parents of the "victims" were willing to come to terms with Michael Jackson allegedly raping/molesting their kid with a simple settlement, then you have a wild definition of the word.

If my kid were molested or raped, I would hunt that nigger with a shotgun and make him pay, I wouldn't settle for any cash at all.

The fact that the parents in ALL of these cases settled just speaks textbook case money grabbing to me.

Don't be so narrow-minded and think outside the box.

Yes, he was weird, but a child molester?  No one ever proved such a claim.

What exactly is "quantitative proof" in a molestation case?

If my kid were molested or raped, I would hunt that nigger with a shotgun and make him pay

I don't see the relevance of what you would do in a similar situation. Very few parents kill their child's molester.

I wouldn't settle for any cash at all.

The fact that the parents in ALL of these cases settled just speaks textbook case money grabbing to me.

If the family and its attorneys believed that the prosecution had very little chance of proving its criminal case beyond a reasonable doubt, they may have thought that a civil settlement would be the only way to get some sort of justice for the child.

There's always the option that the parents are money-hungry, but Jackson still molested their child. I don't think it's too hard to believe that some parents would put wealth ahead of getting justice for their children.

Maybe the MJ defenders don't really have a grasp on just how common a thing child molestation is. Maybe that's why you refuse to believe your idol could do these things.

http://childsafetips.abouttips.com/child-molestation-statistics.php

"The statistics say that one out of every three to four girls has been sexually assaulted by the age of 18. One boy out of every six will be abused by the age of 18. Although we have some reports and convictions to base these statistics on, they are actually not accurate. So many cases of child molestation go unreported each year, so we really cannot estimate the real numbers. The FBI reports that the National Institute for Mental Health found that only 1% to 10% of victims ever tell that they were abused. Boys report far less than girls.

The average child molester will molest fifty girls before being caught and convicted.

A child molester that seeks out boys will molest 150 boys before being caught and convicted and he will commit at least 280 sexual crimes in his lifetime.

The standard pedophile will commit 117 sexual crimes in their lifetime.

Most sexual abuse happens between the ages of 7 and 13.

There are over 491,720 registered sex offenders in the United States.

80,000 to 100,000 of the above offenders are missing.

Molesters known by the family or victim are the most common abusers. The “Acquaintance Molester” accounts for 70-90% of reported cases."

Go on, tell me again how wildly unlikely it is that someone who fetished children, went to incredible lengths to get them into his bed with no other adult supervision, and was twice accused of molesting could possibly have actually done so.

MJ was the reason people like Pac could do and say what they did and said. I mean, the guy single handedly launched Music Videos to a whole new level and subsequently MTV networks. Back in Africa, even as a 5 year old, there were 2 things we knew:

Coca-Cola
Michael Jackson

NOT EVEN SUPERMAN.

Michael was fame and talent.  Bigger then Elvis, that's for sure.

Btw. Jarosh FTW.

What's next? Posting the wikipedia article on child molestation? What does the general issue of child molestation have to do with Michael Jackson's case? One individual who had a weird path in life, abused as a child and still stuck in his childhood dreams. Michael never matured. He was 'weird' and lacked self-confidence. People just used his disadvantages to get his money and ruin him.

That's where I got it from but yeah, the guy is messed up but I can understand the parents' legal situation.  Anybody with children would eventually get freaked out by him and so it's pretty understandable how the parents might have initially been convinced that he was a child molester even without evidence and then backed down and taken a settlement.  I don't know for sure if he is a molester or not.

Crackers will tell you different, but MJ's death far surpasses both those two. Far, far surpasses.
MJ was huge, one of the biggest but he was no Elvis. To say otherwise is insane.

Guys, like I said MJ was the most famous thing next to coca-cola [in Africa, and other underdeveloped regions, wich are totally ignored]. So basically everywhere else in the world. He was like the beatles, but for the entire world.

MJ was the greatest musician to hit the industry for the last 100 frikkin' years in terms of GLOBAL recognition.

i agree that mj had a huge influence on music and had a very positive effect on many people's lives, even though i didn't much like his music myself. on the other hand, i see no convincing evidence that he wasn't a pedophile and a lot that he was -- as an adult, you just don't get to sleep with other peoples' kids. it's something his legacy is gonna hafta deal with, and that his fans are gonna hafta accept. there's very little that's pure in this world, and mj was a complex, fucked up sonuvabitch.

This is valid, for the first case...but I'm sorry, when you already KNOW his reputation for this and still send your kid to his ranch, THEN sue?  That is negligent child exploitation, at the very least.  I would never allow my kid to spend the night with someone who had even been ACCUSED of drugging and molesting kids.

Also, the dude dangled an infant off a balcony.  That's all I need to know to judge him unhinged and unsafe.

Linda: Really, why?

Larry: Well, he's admitted to sleeping with boys in the same bed. Several of the boys have accused him of rape and molestation, and a few of his former employees corroborated their stories. He's settled a few of those cases out of court for millions of dollars. Police have seized several books with nude pictures of boys and a number adult porn magazines with some of the children's finger prints on them.

Linda: All this is very innocent; he's just trying to relive his childhood.

Re: Lennon v. Jackson v. Elvis

I'd put Lennon and Jackson ahead of Elvis. Elvis was an empty vessel, propelled forward into superstardom by teams of unseen songwriters thanklessly throwing sheet music into his hungry furnace. When their sheet music dried out, Elvis turned into an irrelevant lounge act, coasting in shallow waters.

I like to think of Elvis as the Alexandre Dumas of rock music.

Also, today has been horrible. It's like the OJ verdict day mixed with some strange beast. Tempers are flaring to a Michael Jackson soundtrack. It's surreal.

And I suspect if Lennon didn't die so "young" that he'd be somewhat of a joke today as was Elvis in his later years (and I say that as a huge fan of him, solo and with beatles). He'd write endless over the top anti-Bush songs and be marching about with Cindy Sheehan I'd imagine.

Yes he is, but that's pretty irrelevant to whether he knocked off other musicians' songs.

Lennon was only two years younger than Elvis when he died. And before his death, Lennon was writing introspective music that wasn't very political.

And my point was that Elvis wasn't the artist that Lennon was because he didn't really write much original music. Without others writing for him, he'd be nothing.

If Hendrix wasn't black enough, then Jackson wasn't black enough.

Anyway Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Fats Domino, though underplayed, beat both of them to the punch.

And I don't think Michael has ever gotten much play on rock stations. By the time he launched his single career, radio had already become fragmented. Rock stations at the time would have been playing ACDC or Val Halen records, not Michael Jackson. They sure as hell weren't playing "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

I've never heard Jackson on classic rock stations either, but I'd imagine "Beat It" would have received plenty of play on modern rock stations at the time because of its great guitar riff. Hell, I've heard Fall Out Boy's lousy cover on a few rock stations. This hardly supports Himuro's point though; Jackson was no Jackie Robinson.

Plus stations were playing black music long before Jackson; Motown in general heavily contributed to the bridging between urban and mainstream radio. MTV on the other hand, wasn't playing black artists.

Quote
'Bruno' filmmakers remove Michael Jackson-related scene
Jun 26, 2009, 01:40 PM | by Entertainment Weekly

Categories: Movies, Music, News

After Michael Jackson's death was reported yesterday, actor Sacha Baron Cohen and the makers of his new shockfest Bruno scrambled to delete a scene featuring Michael's sister LaToya just before the film's premiere at Mann's Chinese Theater, in Los Angeles. An inside source tells EW the cut was made in the projection room just an hour before the screening was scheduled to begin. The sudden cut made for a slightly jumpy stretch, but the filmmakers narrowly avoided what would have been some uncomfortable, buzz-killing silence at the premiere. No one connected to the film would comment on the deletion of the scene, but it is hard to imagine that it will be restored to the movie before Bruno opens on July 10.

The scene, which had previously been seen by journalists, found Baron Cohen's Bruno -- a wildly gay, fame-seeking Austrian fashionista -- snagging an interview with LaToya. Ms. Jackson, who did not appear to be in on the joke, gamely tried to answer Bruno's questions even as he interrogated her about her brother Michael and tried surreptitiously to find Michael's number on her cellphone. The scene ended, as most things in Bruno's world do, with a moment of raw, funny discomfort. Universal pictures has yet to announce whether the scene will be cut from the film permanently.

Before the screening at Mann's Chinese, journalists on the red carpet were told they could not ask any questions about Michael Jackson (which is ironic given that Baron Cohen has built a career on blindsiding people with his camera and mic). The actor, who worked the red carpet only in character, made a grand arrival atop a tank. The vehicle was covered with mirrors, like a disco ball, and Bruno, naturally, was straddling the canon.

Precisely. That is what annoys me. Making business on somebody's death. Such is life yadda, yadda but the same bar owners would never, ever run a MJ track if he wouldn't have died.

Isn't that sort of a core problem with bars in general? Dude who is alright with poisoning people for money is also alright with exploiting the death of celebrity for business, new news. On the other hand, you could also see it as the bar owner trying to satisfy his customers by playing the songs of a much liked artist following the artist's death.

Jackson's share of the catalog generates $60 million dollars a year. It seems like a father would rather give it to his children than to a billionaire who could have purchased it as early as the late 60s.

Of course, I'd rather have Macca in control of the catalog. I'd imagine he'd okay fewer television commercials using covers of "We can Work it Out."

If you mean that his kids will have to pay the debt, isn't that not true? I remember reading that credit card companies can try to collect a parent's debt from the children but they don't actually have to pay.

Or maybe that was just bs.
His children don't inherit his debt, but his estate does. His Executor has to settle the estate's debts before the children can inherit anything.

That's kind of dumb.  Sure he made a career out of covering black blues artists and singers, but he brought them to the mainstream.  He's a legend period.

Go talk to a random asian, black, middle eastern, or hispanic person and they will not give a shit about that dude.

Even old folks in my family don't give a shit about Elvis.

The Beatles, Sinatra, Jackson, they have universal appeal.

Himu...

Elvis influenced the British invasion. To me the best analogy for Elvis is that of a sampler. Today, if I listen to a rap or electronic or whatever song and hear a cool sample...I'll look it up. Many white people were introduced to BB King, Little Richard, etc through Elvis. And they'll tell you that he helped their careers enormously. Elvis wasn't just an American legend, confined to our borders.

Prole has a SOHH account.

I don't think Elvis was or is very popular outside the US and the Commonwealth (to be fair to him, most of the world didn't have access to record players or imported records in the 50s). But I don't think he even had a number one hit in a country like Germany.

The Beatles and Jackson had more universal appeal.

I assume the source for these figures is Colonel Parker because the show wasn't even live in America or Europe. Yet they claim a billion live viewers? 1.5 billion total?

In comparison, only 1 billion people saw the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in 2008!
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/olympics/article6256063.ece (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/olympics/article6256063.ece)

So the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, broadcast in every country in 2008, gets 1 billion viewers. Yet Elvis' concert, shown in just 40 countries in 1973, gets 1.5 billion?

Is anyone really that credulous?

So 166 million people watched the Euro Cup final last year, but 1.5 billion people watched Elvis in 1973? You kidding me? This was not even shown in China, India, or the USSR.

it was shown in 40 countries.

viewed in prime time in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines, and by American servicemen in Southeast Asia. The next night the show would be shown in twenty-eight European countries via a Euro vision simulcast. NBC would air the concert in the United States [three months later].
Page 61 Elvis in Hawaii By Jerry Hopkins
That's five short, but that figure may include some of the smaller South East Asian countries the US servicemen were stationed in.

1973 population figures

Asia
Japan: 108,079,000
Philippines: 39,758,820
Thailand: 39,271,380
Korea, South:33,934,870
Australia: 13,380,000
New Zealand: 2,956,000
Asian Total: 237,380,070

28 Euro vision Countries in 1973: my generous estimate is at 400 million

US: 211,909,000

Total: 849,289,070

Even if every single man, woman, child, fetus, pet cat, goldfish in each and every one of those countries watched the fucking thing, it doesn't add up to a billion, let alone 1.5 billion.

And I was right: the source for the figures was the colonel!

Ugh, Elvis. Sick of hearing that name in my area. We look upon his fanatics much in the same way Prole looks down upon Ninthings. Despite my severe distaste in Elvis, I cannot deny the importance of his role in both the music scene and history.

Malek, you can take out Philippines from that list too. 1972 Marshall Law  instituted by Marcos only allowed Filipino songs on TV+Radio to be played. That lasted three or four years.

They need Singstar Jackson just to to further justify my future purchase of Singstar Queen.

No way Elvis gets pissed on.  Don't Be Cruel and Return to Sender give him a free pass.  The Beatles, well, duh it's the Beatles; bigger than Jesus.  Michael Jackson 'cause he was that awesome.  They could probably put his videos in constant rotation on VH1 and get better ratings than they usually get.  MTV as well, for that matter.

But Lennon, other than Double Fantasy, needed the treacle of McCartney to temper his outre tendencies.  Just as McCartney is nearly unlistenable as a solo artist without Lennon's snear.  Fuck Ram; that album is unlistenable pablum.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

An imam at the Mosque in this city is visiting from CA and he said that the Jackson family approached the Islamic association in LA to prepare an islamic burial for Michael Jackson after the autopsies are done!!

I really hope that this is true for Michael's sake. I don't know if any of the allegations are true or not, but if he did convert then God will wipe away all his sins he commited before converting, excluding any major ones. But if he truely repented for anything he did then hopefully God will forgive him.

As I said, it is ultimately up to God to decide. But I think the surest way to go to heaven is to be a good muslim. There are verses in the Quran that say that Christians, Jews and people who believe in one God, the last day and do good deeds will be rewarded. And there are verses that say that people should die good muslims in order to be guaranteed to heaven. So, I think it is up to God in the end, because He is the ultimate judge.

I really don't want to derail the thread so I will stop here.

His records are selling out all over the world, he left 200 unreleased tracks to his children, and Sony will most likely continue to put out compilations. It's perfectly possible.

Actually, he'd only have to sell about 6 million per year over the next 41 years to get to 1 billion, not 63 million.

That's much more doable, especially considering this year should see a huge spike in sales.

  ???

6 million x 41 +750 million = 996 million
63 million x 4 decades + 750 million= 1.002 billion

I didn't count this year in my calculations.

But if you want to get more technical and count the sales from this year, it will probably be something like this:

4-5 million this year because he just died + 750 million + 61 million x 4 decades= 998-999 million

So, he would actually have to sell 6.1 million albums a year (after this year)  :P

Apparently he was in really shitty condition before he died.  Our celebrity obsessed society killed a man.  :-\

jeez, this article is pretty crazy. Just the day before his death Michael was rehearsing for the concert, dancing on tables and shit. He certainly didn't look fragile or unable to sing/dance. Not done with the article tho

Yea but this article makes it sound like Jackson was some cripple who couldn't do shit. The rehearsal picks prove otherwise. Eh, I dunno how factual this is

edit: ah, he collapsed after the second rehearsal. yea this makes sense  :(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists#1_billion_records_or_more

sheeeeiiiiittttt

I wonder if Michael can get to the 1 billion mark by 2050. It means he would have to sell 63 million albums a decade... I don't see it happening this soon though.

Ah, I misread "decade" in your post as "year", which really made your post come off as having some bizarre maths. I think he'll make it to 1 billion, though, especially with a huge spike this year and over the next few years as some unreleased stuff comes out.

I watched about 30 or so minutes of those BET awards, because I'd read there were gonna be some musical tributes to Jackson and I figured I'd get a few laughs out of it, but I'm not kidding when I say that those were 30 excruciating minutes.  It's not an exaggeration when I tell you that was one of the worst things I have ever viewed on television.  Not a single person on that stage sang worth a fuck, out of tune and just wretched, wretched.

Joe Jackson was in the audience wearing a baseball cap and standing beside Al Sharpton, clapping along to a Bel Biv Devoe performance.  I don't think I've ever wished for a pseudo-celebrity-parasite double death, but I did when I saw that - a light structure from the ceiling, a crazy Michael Jackson fan with a pistol and poor aim on the first shot, anything.  Surreal.

From UKR comments:

Quote
Collected jokes so far:
His family have told Sky News that they haven’t seem him this stiff since he watched Peter Pan.

Undertakers have announced that Michael Jackson will be cremated and the plastic will be recycled into toys so that kids can play with him for a change

what a coincidence, farrah fawcett and michael jackson dying on the same day. one played with majors and the other played with minors

MJ left it in his will that in spirit of recycling and healing the world he asked to be melted down and turned into plastic party cups, so kids can still get their lips around his rim.

Was there a flyer handed out to the BET presenters admonishing them to mention and honor Joe Jackson more than Michael?

Ya know, the guy who by all accounts absolutely gutted with beatings, accusations, and taunts what was probably a rather isolated and sensitive young kid.

Surreal is a good way of putting it.  When Maya Angelou passes are we going to pay tribute to her rapist for infusing her "voice" with a unique experience from which to draw?

Looking to pay tribute to Michael Jackson’s passing? Well then you should probably pay MONEY to Electronic Arts.

“Battlefield Heroes” players will be able to pony up 420 Battlefunds (about $3 in real money) for each Michael Jackson-themed costume. The good guys have access to the white suit from the “Smooth Criminal” music video, while the bad guys get the black leather getup from “Bad.”

I don’t take issue with the concept, an in-game memorial of MJ, but to sell them? Sure, Battlefield Heroes is a free game and it makes its money off of in-game customization options, but this just smacks of bad taste.

Good jon, EA. :duh

Michael Jackson was married and his wife is demanding all of his property -- this according to a woman who just filed a petition in L.A. County Superior Court. Nona Paris Lola Ankhesenamun Jackson, who lives in London, asks "that all my husband's properties, monies and assets must be transferred to me immediately" and "my husband's body must be returned to the coroner's body [sic] or the mortuary immediately." Of course, there is no evidence this woman had any relationship whatsoever to Michael Jackson. She's had an active court case since December of last year, claiming she was married to the singer. Nona also claims all of Michael's children are hers and that she didn't authorize them to live with Katherine Jackson.
