Wow. One of the first cassette tapes I bought with my own earned money was Thriller. I rode around the neighborhood on my bike listening to it endlessly on one of these:

Well this was definitely unexpected.
I never knew until I saw that poster that Francis Coppola directed Captain Eo. Is that still playing at Disney?
So unexpected.
So unexpected.
Why do people keep saying this?
I was thinking about it just now, and you know how people say "I grew up listening to/watching <celebrity>?" Well, I honestly couldn't think of a time from the year I was born until I reached adulthood that Jackson wasn't on the radio/television/movies in some fashion. And I don't mean in the gossip rags, I mean actively producing new work. From The Jackson 5 straight through to Dangerous, I literally grew up watching and listening to this guy.
Not entirely unexpected, though. You can't do the clinically insane things he did to his face and body and expect to outrun the side effects forever.

how awesome is mtv right now?
Who plays M.J. in the movie? Robert Downey Jr.? He can play him in blackface and gradually take the makeup off.
I usually never care when celebrities die but why does Michael dying choke me up?Same here. I keep getting chills for no reason every few minutes.
When MTV was playing Rock With You, I had tears in my eyes, Beezy. TEARS. WHAT THE FUCKYeah, I'm actually depressed over this. I didn't expect to be when I first heard the rumors a few hours ago.
It's always unsettling to see little pieces of your childhood die away.I guess that's true. I'm not crying or anything, but I honestly don't wanna talk to anyone right now.

MJ was awesome. Icon. He was the human coca-cola, in terms of recognition.

Sweet. He was a great man, good man.
We get MJ and Dave Chapelle and Ali.

He wasn't a pedophile. He was just a guy who lost his childhood and wanted to live it through the happiness of children.

Great artist, and believe me, I get that it's possible to love the art and hate the artist, but sorry, I just can't get over the pedophilia. Once it became clear what was going on, I just couldn't stand to see or hear the freak anymore. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear all this talk of how much he'll be missed etc. Fucker never even did jail time!
I think what is so sad about Michael is he was so innocent. All of the accusations aside, he really did maintain a child like wonder and view of the world that is hard not to be envious of. I'm such a jaded fuck that it's encouraging to know there are people out there that always see the glass half full even when things are going really bad.
'innocent 'til proven guilty' would be so much more meaningful in a society where millionaires weren't able to settle out of court and use lawyers and the media to harass the crap out of their accusers. See also: Kobe Bryant.
Willco playing devil's advocate for a pedophile, how shocking. :P

I was more or less playing it for Kobe Bryant - I think the body of evidence of Michael Jackson shows there was inappropiate behavior at the very least.

Remember the tactics used by kobe's lawyers? That young woman was not eager to settle out of court at the outset until she was bullied and harassed and shamed in a quite shocking fashion.

You know, honestly...who fucking cares that Michael Jackson died? He hasn't made a good album in more than a decade, he was of questionable moral fiber, and there are actual tragedies going on in the world, right now.

She's older than me and I'm very immature. I could sooo help her find her lost childhood, if you know what I mean.
I had a couple buddies over tongiht. We had too much to drink and sat on my porch and smoked cigars. We ended up watching the full-length video for Thriller along with Smooth Criminal and Beat It. We all got a little sad remembering him as the talented musician that he was, instead of the strange individual that he became later on in life.
My boss just called me. He has "RIP Michael Jackson We Love You" written on the side of his car and he said he's been driving it past MJs house today. He sounded pretty down.
*sigh*
n1ggas is reacting emotionally, instead of rationally, nothing about mikes death is going to change anything, if he died 20 years from now, instead of today, it would be the same result, people would be honoring him as a legend, singing his song's, doing tributes and all that....WHENEVER he died, it was going to be long after the fact, of his legacy being set in stone
pac left UNANSWERED QUESTIONS with his passing, he left a VOID in rap music
yall keep going into "more people listened to MJ so when it's really not about who's a bigger icon
to make another analogy, so maybe some of you can understand:
i'd say richard pryor/george carlin are two of the greatest comedians of all time....they died, people mourned, people payed tribute, people cited influence, nothing about "comedy" changed, with either of their passing, their legacies were already cemented and accounted for, their deaths were just the closing chapters to great stories
had dave chappelle died, a tragic death during the filming of "chappelle's show" at the height of it's popularity, his death would have changed the landscape of comedy, and left a question mark as to what could of been, he only would have been like 29 years old....you can tell me you can't understand the logic of this with a straight face
dave dying in his prime, would have had a way bigger impact, than rich or carlin, even tho they are by far the bigger icons
My boss just called me. He has "RIP Michael Jackson We Love You" written on the side of his car and he said he's been driving it past MJs house today. He sounded pretty down.

It's amazing what the passing of a celebrity will do for his/her image. I notice most of the videos being played on CNN when I was watching didn't showcase anything past Black Or White. 80's Michael was on fire though!
are you dense? some of you guys are fucking HIGH. This is what is upsetting me the most!! I would be upset if he was a good person and tried his best to make a positive change to world. Although he did charity work, that doesn't really change my view of him since he didn't really try to change his lifestyle and his behavior.
I just don't think you can seperate Michael the performer and Michael the person.
edit: I feel bad for talking about the man since he just died. I don't know :-\
go ahead and dismiss everything he stands for because "he didn't make a positive change to the world", if you actually believe the bullshit you spout. well, fuck you, i bet the whole world would cry if you died, right? how have you changed the world for the better, asshole? yeah, thought so.

There has never been an ounce of quantitative proof that he raped or molested anyone and it was always pure media drivel.
If my kid were molested or raped, I would hunt that nigger with a shotgun and make him pay
I wouldn't settle for any cash at all.
The fact that the parents in ALL of these cases settled just speaks textbook case money grabbing to me.
If you had children and if Michael was still alive, would you let him babysit them (alone)?I wouldn't let him babysit even if he wasn't a pedo, he is a strange guy.

He had major issues. Even if there wasn't enough evidence to prove the molestation charges, I can understand if the parents got scared of him and prematurely accused him.
I see his point, definitely Himu.
In terms of general world impact obviously MJ's death is far bigger, like Elvis or Lennon.
On Tupac though, sure a void was created in the genre that definitely remains. He wasn't the first or last hypocritical rapper to mix gangsta imagery with socially conscious messages. But I'd agree that since his death no one has replaced/surpassed him as an artist (in hip hop). That's not to say no one has made better hip hop than him, just that for me personally no rapper has made more of an impact on me.
But that void only effects one genre of music. MJ, Lennon, and Elvis were bigger than genres. If Tupac had lived longer and accomplished more who knows (he wouldn't have reached their levels obviously, but he could have had a huge impact if he lived long enough to "grow up" imo)
MJ was huge, one of the biggest but he was no Elvis. To say otherwise is insane.I see his point, definitely Himu.

Crackers will tell you different, but MJ's death far surpasses both those two. Far, far surpasses.

as for the parents settling, would YOU want to have your kids at the center of a protracted, media-focused court battle with millions of angry fans clamoring for your head? or would you take the money?
I'd put Lennon and Jackson ahead of Elvis. Elvis was an empty vessel, propelled forward into superstardom by teams of unseen songwriters thanklessly throwing sheet music into his hungry furnace. When their sheet music dried out, Elvis turned into an irrelevant lounge act, coasting in shallow waters.
And by unseen songwriters, he means black musicians he callously knocked off.
When Powerslave, Borys, and Veidt are attacking you, you can't help feeling you're right. And I suspect if Lennon didn't die so "young" that he'd be somewhat of a joke today as was Elvis in his later years (and I say that as a huge fan of him, solo and with beatles). He'd write endless over the top anti-Bush songs and be marching about with Cindy Sheehan I'd imagine.

Page was a legitimately great guitarist; many black musicians claim he sold his sold to the devil like Robert Johnson.

Really? Wow, I imagined Lennon being much younger. Probably because of just how horrible Elvis looked in his later years.
Lennon was only two years younger than Elvis when he died. And before his death, Lennon was writing introspective music that wasn't very political.
Larry: I'm concerned about our new neighbor--I think he might be a child molester.
Linda: Really, why?
Larry: Well, he's admitted to sleeping with boys in the same bed. Several of the boys have accused him of rape and molestation, and a few of his former employees corroborated their stories. He's settled a few of those cases out of court for millions of dollars. Police have seized several books with nude pictures of boys and a number adult porn magazines with some of the children's finger prints on them.
Linda: All this is very innocent; he's just trying to relive his childhood.
Larry: Yeah, plus he's made such wonderful music that we love so much. If his fans can excuse his behavior, why can't we? Kids, go get your bike shorts and pokeymans; we're gonna go see rich uncle Emjay!
Linda: Also The Beatles suck.

I've ever heard MJ on classic rock radio, but I wouldn't be surprised if some stations do play him. I can imagine Beat It being on rock radio rotations in the 80s I guess
I am not! Just because I play Blanka in street fighter and do nothing but hunker down and electrocute....
'Bruno' filmmakers remove Michael Jackson-related scene
Jun 26, 2009, 01:40 PM | by Entertainment Weekly
Categories: Movies, Music, News
After Michael Jackson's death was reported yesterday, actor Sacha Baron Cohen and the makers of his new shockfest Bruno scrambled to delete a scene featuring Michael's sister LaToya just before the film's premiere at Mann's Chinese Theater, in Los Angeles. An inside source tells EW the cut was made in the projection room just an hour before the screening was scheduled to begin. The sudden cut made for a slightly jumpy stretch, but the filmmakers narrowly avoided what would have been some uncomfortable, buzz-killing silence at the premiere. No one connected to the film would comment on the deletion of the scene, but it is hard to imagine that it will be restored to the movie before Bruno opens on July 10.
The scene, which had previously been seen by journalists, found Baron Cohen's Bruno -- a wildly gay, fame-seeking Austrian fashionista -- snagging an interview with LaToya. Ms. Jackson, who did not appear to be in on the joke, gamely tried to answer Bruno's questions even as he interrogated her about her brother Michael and tried surreptitiously to find Michael's number on her cellphone. The scene ended, as most things in Bruno's world do, with a moment of raw, funny discomfort. Universal pictures has yet to announce whether the scene will be cut from the film permanently.
Before the screening at Mann's Chinese, journalists on the red carpet were told they could not ask any questions about Michael Jackson (which is ironic given that Baron Cohen has built a career on blindsiding people with his camera and mic). The actor, who worked the red carpet only in character, made a grand arrival atop a tank. The vehicle was covered with mirrors, like a disco ball, and Bruno, naturally, was straddling the canon.
Where were you fans, when he was still alive and pedoing? You're a fucking idiot, you know that? How is it a problem that people are playing his music they day after he died?
1) Fake fans are annoying.
2) Blasting MJ music inside a pub to lure people inside beacuse "It's MJ music! And he died yesterday! Let's have a drink in that pub!" is even more annoying.
So you're saying that unless you disagree that he might have been a pedo, you're a fake fan? Seriously?
The 'pedoing' thing was a joke man. I added it in the last second.Quote from: MalekWhy do bar owners have to be fans of the music they play in their bars?
Aren't all bar owners trying to attract customers?
Precisely. That is what annoys me. Making business on somebody's death. Such is life yadda, yadda but the same bar owners would never, ever run a MJ track if he wouldn't have died.

Stop feigning moral outrage. Newspapers, book publishers, movie producers, record companies, radio stations, television stations, web sites will all make money off of his death.
And?
And I disagree with that kind of business running. That's all. No moral outrage here just smh-ing.
It was a sad day when the owner of Poland's premiere Michael Jackson-themed restaurant and bar was chided by Borys for playing music after the musician's death. :'(
Everyone will be trying to make business on it. Who do you think will be on the cover of People, Us, Time, Newsweek...etc next week?So you're saying that unless you disagree that he might have been a pedo, you're a fake fan? Seriously?

I still don't believe this. Micheal's share of the catalog is worth at least half a billion dollars. It's not something you just give away to an old acquaintance from 30 years ago.

edit: If the Times claim that he's $400 million in debt is correct, he's not going to give his share of Beatles catalog away.
I imagine he'd okay MORE. McCartney is an asshat.
His children don't inherit his debt, but his estate does. His Executor has to settle the estate's debts before the children can inherit anything.edit: If the Times claim that he's $400 million in debt is correct, he's not going to give his share of Beatles catalog away.
If you mean that his kids will have to pay the debt, isn't that not true? I remember reading that credit card companies can try to collect a parent's debt from the children but they don't actually have to pay.
Or maybe that was just bs.

Even old folks in my family don't give a shit about Elvis.
The Beatles, Sinatra, Jackson, they have universal appeal.

The one thing I will say, is growing in the up in the 80s, Halloween (the holiday) and "Thriller" are virtually inseparable for me. I play it every year - it's my ringtone around the fall holiday nowadays.

The show was seen live by a billion people worldwide, and on delay to a further 500 million. It was seen by over 50% of the US TV audience, prompting Billboard to present Elvis Presley with a "trendsetter" award.
Walk away. Just... walk away.
viewed in prime time in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines, and by American servicemen in Southeast Asia. The next night the show would be shown in twenty-eight European countries via a Euro vision simulcast. NBC would air the concert in the United States [three months later].Page 61 Elvis in Hawaii By Jerry Hopkins

No way Elvis gets pissed on. Don't Be Cruel and Return to Sender give him a free pass. The Beatles, well, duh it's the Beatles; bigger than Jesus. Michael Jackson 'cause he was that awesome. They could probably put his videos in constant rotation on VH1 and get better ratings than they usually get. MTV as well, for that matter.
But Lennon, other than Double Fantasy, needed the treacle of McCartney to temper his outre tendencies. Just as McCartney is nearly unlistenable as a solo artist without Lennon's snear. Fuck Ram; that album is unlistenable pablum.
Was Freddie Mercury's death as big a deal as MJ's?
I just realised all the people who hate on MJ after he died are white.

They also seem to be the most generally cynical people.
BREAKING NEWS!!!What if he repented as a Christian? Going straight to hell then eh?
An imam at the Mosque in this city is visiting from CA and he said that the Jackson family approached the Islamic association in LA to prepare an islamic burial for Michael Jackson after the autopsies are done!!
I really hope that this is true for Michael's sake. I don't know if the any of the allegations are true or not, but if he did convert then God will wipe away all his sins he commited before converting, excluding any major ones. But if he truely repented for anything he did then hopefully God will forgive him.

Mother Teresa and Ghandi have less of a shot in heaven than the random muslim off the street? Doesn't sound like a very logical God.

His records are selling out all over the world, he left 200 unreleased tracks to his children, and Sony will most likely continue to put out compilations. It's perfectly possible.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists#1_billion_records_or_more

I wonder if Michael can get to the 1 billion mark by 2050. It means he would have to sell 63 million albums a decade... I don't see it happening this soon though.

All I know is somehow Alien Ant Farm is going to get some money out of this, and that makes me sad.

Actually, he'd only have to sell about 6 million per year over the next 41 years to get to 1 billion, not 63 million.
That's much more doable, especially considering this year should see a huge spike in sales.

Apparently he was in really shitty condition before he died. Our celebrity obsessed society killed a man. :-\

???
6 million x 41 +750 million = 996 million
63 million x 4 decades + 750 million= 1.002 billion
I didn't count this year in my calculations.
But if you want to get more technical and count the sales from this year, it will probably be something like this:
4-5 million this year because he just died + 750 million + 61 million x 4 decades= 998-999 million
So, he would actually have to sell 6.1 million albums a year (after this year) :P
allow me to artistically express my admiration and grief

Collected jokes so far:
His family have told Sky News that they haven’t seem him this stiff since he watched Peter Pan.
Undertakers have announced that Michael Jackson will be cremated and the plastic will be recycled into toys so that kids can play with him for a change
what a coincidence, farrah fawcett and michael jackson dying on the same day. one played with majors and the other played with minors
MJ left it in his will that in spirit of recycling and healing the world he asked to be melted down and turned into plastic party cups, so kids can still get their lips around his rim.
I watched about 30 or so minutes of those BET awards, because I'd read there were gonna be some musical tributes to Jackson and I figured I'd get a few laughs out of it, but I'm not kidding when I say that those were 30 excruciating minutes. It's not an exaggeration when I tell you that was one of the worst things I have ever viewed on television. Not a single person on that stage sang worth a fuck, out of tune and just wretched, wretched.
Joe Jackson was in the audience wearing a baseball cap and standing beside Al Sharpton, clapping along to a Bel Biv Devoe performance. I don't think I've ever wished for a pseudo-celebrity-parasite double death, but I did when I saw that - a light structure from the ceiling, a crazy Michael Jackson fan with a pistol and poor aim on the first shot, anything. Surreal.
I never thought of Blanket as more than a baby, it's kind of weird seeing him grown up. :lol
The mom said that they weren't his biological kids, he used a sperm bank or something.
How come his kids are completely white?
Looking to pay tribute to Michael Jackson’s passing? Well then you should probably pay MONEY to Electronic Arts.
“Battlefield Heroes” players will be able to pony up 420 Battlefunds (about $3 in real money) for each Michael Jackson-themed costume. The good guys have access to the white suit from the “Smooth Criminal” music video, while the bad guys get the black leather getup from “Bad.”
I don’t take issue with the concept, an in-game memorial of MJ, but to sell them? Sure, Battlefield Heroes is a free game and it makes its money off of in-game customization options, but this just smacks of bad taste.

Doesn't change the fact that they were always going to be free.
Michael Jackson was married and his wife is demanding all of his property -- this according to a woman who just filed a petition in L.A. County Superior Court. Nona Paris Lola Ankhesenamun Jackson, who lives in London, asks "that all my husband's properties, monies and assets must be transferred to me immediately" and "my husband's body must be returned to the coroner's body [sic] or the mortuary immediately." Of course, there is no evidence this woman had any relationship whatsoever to Michael Jackson. She's had an active court case since December of last year, claiming she was married to the singer. Nona also claims all of Michael's children are hers and that she didn't authorize them to live with Katherine Jackson. She now claims, "Though he died to this earth he lives with my father [Satan the Devil] Khalid Lucifer." The doc says "For any questions, I can be contacted at [email address removed] or leave my children alone."
