Title: Battlefield 1943
Post by: demi on July 02, 2009, 02:15:29 PM
It is out next week for XBLA... who is getting it. I'm considering it. It seems like it will have some good legs.

Definitely.

Been playing some ARMA II and controlling the aircrafts are the worst. I don't remember Operation Flashpoint being this bad, but that was ages ago when I could still play games like Street Fighter and Counter-Strike to a decent level.

It would be nice to have something simpler. So I'm really looking forward BF1943.

I need to find a cheap deal on XBL points before I can get anything else on XBLA.  If there is one, i'll probably get it on 360.

I wish the PC version was out the same day, but I can adapt.  The controls in Bad company were a bit too touchy, almost like the acceleration was too high or something.

Just create a US Live profile and buy one of those 4000 points for about £18.

Use the US profile to buy and download what you want, and then you can play those games using your European profile. Just make sure both profiles are tied to the same console.

I have a US account that I have used to buy over 8000 points of content and it all works great with my regular Canadian account. Go for it.

No catch, I've purchased plenty of Japanese content for use on my U.S. account.  As long as both accounts are tied to the same Xbox, there's no problem!

Alright so just to make sure, this works with add-ons as well? I got 4000 points from some ebay ad that I found through CAG, so I dl'ed Worms 2 and everything works just fine. Thinking I should get the Fallout DLC now.

For those looking for points, the ad in question was from this guy: http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/emoryjackie - got my code in less than a minute.

I can vouch for the points from that ebay classified. Between the cards I have from circuit city closing down, your360connection, and the ebay peeps I'm set for a long time on xbla.

Both me and the girlfriend are gonna get battlefield come wednesday on 360. If you guys wish to play maybe we should setup a time.

I dont care where these points are coming from as long as I'm able to keep the ones I have already :)

game modes are just conquest and a separate "air superiority" mode for the coral sea map

you can form four-man squads, though, which is nice

So there's no way to hold private games with just friends?  That's what I'm looking for.  The squad thing sound great though.
Title: Re: Battlefield 1943
Post by: The Fake Shemp on July 06, 2009, 09:00:05 PM
The game runs on dedicated servers, which would kind of make private games silly.  Just invite your friends and put them in a squad, so you only take to one another.

We'd be wanting to do games where it was one squad of friends versus another, but all friends-only.  Not a big deal if you can't do this; I'm buying the game regardless but they might not.

This is still feasible, just take over a server with nobody on it and everyone squad up.

That's not good. I've played 2 games now and they both had considerable lag  :(. Also, there doesn't seem to be much choice when it comes to matchmaking, and quickmatch doesn't automatically research if no game or connection is made (i.e. "game is not available").

I managed to play one game that had almost no lag and it was alot of fun, so apparently that is hit or miss right now. But right after that game, my Xbox froze  :-\. Sure am glad that this game spent a month in certification.......wouldn't want to release a buggy mess or anything  ::)

Good News, the game is incredibly successful beyond even my expectations. We have reached server capacity, but the bad news about this now some people can't join unless someone leaves. But don't worry, we are adding more servers ASAP to Xbox and in preparation PS3 that should start going up ASAP with priority on Xbox 360.

We have also isolated the issue and improving until we have close to 0 packet loss.

Please keep an eye here for updates.

Bullshit, some gaffer's console did the same thing. Not that it couldn't be an incoming RROD, which is entirely possible. I would say that's unlikely though as only a few games have ever froze on my console

anyone got a spare 48 hour gold trial so I can buy this off of my US profile?

It won't let me buy it on silver - probably 'cause it's a multiplayer only game.

Played the trial, didn't have that big of a lag issue. Quite fun.

Wait, one other person's console did the SAME thing?  It's an epidemic!

... again, sounds like you guys have typical RROD issues incoming (someone else having RROD problems - impossible!).  There has been real reports of freezing or bugs, just that EA couldn't get their ass together in terms of setting up adequate servers for demand.

played until the trial ended (2 games I think) and it's a lot fun; I'll wait for the PC version.  Controls are better than Bad Company, but they still don't let you change them enough to become comfortable (for me).  They have the option to walk using the right stick, but I can't make accelerate the right trigger for ground vehicles? still, they let you do it for the planes? wtf? the planes control are more complicated than they need to be, like, you can't even reverse anymore; they just have just copied Crimson Skies or Warhawk.  And in general I'm shit when using dual analog.

The game changes from 1942 seem fine to me.  I mean, I played a lot of 1942 (1942 and 2 are my favorite multiplayer games) and the charm is still there with it all streamlined.  The one thing I don't get is the sniper load out.  It's the class that has the det packs, yet it is only good at far range since it only has a sniper and pistol.  They should have given the sniper a gimped Thompson and the Engineer (or support, whatever it is now) the BAR.  And the bombing planes are pretty awesome.  That seems like the best addition.

The graphics upgrade is ok.  The water and destructible environments are the only two things that really stand out.  It has pretty bad aliasing if you look out in the distance.

and no real lag in the two games.  Seems to run fine despite whatever problems there were.

you'd think in two hours of trying i'd be able to get into at least one game, but no

also, once it launches the endless "searching for games" screen you can't back out of it - you actually have to quit to the dashboard and restart the game

Eel, I recommend taking a look at my friends list or the NeoGAF friends list and joining from there.  It's pretty easy joining off a friend - Quick Match is still busted.

Once in, it's bliss.  It really is great.  I think I just spent over 60 minutes playing, with no problems.  Battlefield is like crack.  This is the best version of the gameplay style for consoles.

I was able to get into a server this morning after 10 or so tries. When you get into a lag free game with even teams, it is really fun. I was able to put together a couple of games as a sniper where I had 13 or so kills and 0 deaths. I would just camp a few spots and lay out some explosives on the nearest road. When an enemy tank or jeep comes by....BOOM :lol

I wish there were map voting or veto or something. We played one of the maps like five times in a row before it finally switched.

Does anyone know if there is any tangible effect from the stamps that you earn? (e.g. "sniper efficiency")

played the PS3 demo, because I wanted to try more of the game and the 360 trial ran out, and now I really want to buy it for 360.  I guess it clicked for me or whatever, at least the plane controls did.

I was getting headshots from while doing swooping runs

btw, I still don't get the problems are having with the game.  On the 360, I played two games and only had to try and connect twice.  On the PS3, I connected first time.  The four games I played were smooth and lag free.

fffffffffffff

I've had some bullshit deaths in this game, and it just feels inconsistent. First of all, why is it that enemies only sometimes appear on your radar? I thought it had to do with crouching, but that does not appear to be it as even vehicles have even not shown up on radar. Also, the counter seems to be off. I just got out of a game in which we help all the cap points for a good 10 minutes from the start of the game, and out meter was at the same length as theirs  :maf

I spawned at one of our flag locations and sprinted toward the Air Raid building. I go up to the door and try to get in, but I can't. My reticle is white, which means that there isn't a teammate using it right now. The 3 airplanes were showing on my map, so it was ready to be used. I am standing there getting all pissed off that I can't use it when a fucking jap comes out and shoots me in the face. wtf. I laughed, but I had to turn it off before I put my fist through the wall  :maf

Title: Re: Battlefield 1943
Post by: Eel O'Brian on July 12, 2009, 09:50:15 AM
i ended up falling asleep last night so i never went back on, sorry

nah, my nat is open, i was able to connect fine for a while, but then i ran into a period of about 1/2 an hour where i couldn't connect to a game to save my ass

that'll probably be corrected shortly with the servers they allegedly keep adding, but the crappy interface will never be fixed

requiring 16 players before you can even start a private match is just utter bullshit

they really, really should have included a peer-to-peer option for private matches

haha, i need to learn when to mute my mic

i got my tank stuck on a dragon's tooth near a base, and since i was surrounded by enemies i had no choice but to stay inside the tank to duke it out

i'm not very good at this game, but i do know what i'm doing, and that was something i couldn't avoid

of course we got murdered, then i heard this jackass say "the guy driving the tank is an idiot, you gotta keep moving"

so i yelled "GO FUCK YOURSELF" as loud as i could - he's one of those dudes who never stop talking for one second and he was getting on my nerves anyway

i've decided i'm not talking anymore, and i'm just gonna mute everyone in games from now on, so if you're one of those people who hate that then you probably just shouldn't play with me

i miss the days of text-only chat :(

Agreed.

Squads make this game.  I load up my jeep with my friends and explosives, and constantly honk the horn.  I run through an enemy base and their guys are like, "Wtf is this?" and then - boom! - we blow up the jeep and cap their flag.  Everytime. :lol

I'd bet we'll get three more Pacific island maps for another $15, probably no more than that.  They're not going to waste too much time or too many resources creating new assets, so any maps will use what they already have and be really similar to what's already in the game.  I was thinking a European expansion map pack would be cool, but I doubt that'll happen now given that they'd have to create new weapons, player models, ground and building textures, etc.  More than likely that stuff will show up next year around this time in a separate Battlefield 1944 title (and, knowing EA, it won't interface with BF1943 in any way).

Coral Sea is cool I guess... sucks ass waiting on a carrier for a plane.

It's awesome flying real low and sneaking onto the enemies carrier then getting in their AA gun and annihilating their planes  :lol

I was worried when you said that, but you really don't even wait that long - if at all.

It's neat in a kind of online tutorial on how to fly planes, but not very engaging.

It sold many times over what they were expecting it to sell, so I'd say the odds are pretty good.  I wouldn't expect any Euopean maps (they'll save that for a 1944 sequel), but I'd guess we'll get a couple more Pacific maps before the year is out.

i think i'm about done with this, to be honest

after that initial rush wears off, without proper matchmaking it's getting to be more frustrating than fun

you've either got people on your team just fucking off and suiciding all the time on purpose, or you're paired against dudes who are already experts and know every nook and cranny

there's no way to get paired up with people at your own skill level (or lack thereof), you're just tossed into the pit against guys who have already put an entire work week worth of hours into it - and if someone puts over forty hours into a game that's only been out for 11 days then it's like, "Congratulations!  You're officially, no doubt about it, a pathetic sack of shit."
Title: Re: Battlefield 1943
Post by: The Fake Shemp on July 19, 2009, 01:57:57 AM
Is this because I didn't invite you to tonight's squad?  Our matches are so much fun - you'd be silly to throw it all away.

... unless you have a BETTER idea?
Title: Re: Battlefield 1943
Post by: Eel O'Brian on July 19, 2009, 02:27:21 AM
i had no idea you guys were even playing tonight, i played some force unleashed and hopped into a few matches afterwards

it just honestly isn't much fun going up against a team of people who've played so much the skin of their ass cheeks have started growing into their chairs, like that lady who spent a year on the toilet

i know i'm never going to be very good at the game simply because i'll never even want to invest/waste that amount of my life on it, but it sure would be nice if they'd put some/a little/any matchmaking into it so i could play with people around my own level and feel like i at least have a tiny chance - instead of throwing my hands up in the air and just piloting the boat around the island in circles until the match is over

27-0 game on Guadalcanal, sniping bitches left and right.

Wonder if any further expansions are in the works. Surely so with all the money this one made. Maps are getting a bit dull. Guada and Iwo Jima are good but Coral Sea is full of douchebags and Wake Island is boring.

I can't see them letting those potential dollars get away from them, and I'd be surprised if there weren't at least some sketchy plans for DLC made before the game launched.  If even half the people who buy the game buy maps, that would still be an enormous amount of profit for a nominal investment of time and resources.

I might not be on the Boresquad tonight, a friend is in town.

Don't worry Eel. If you guys are still playing this in the fall, I will teach you the meaning of "suck". You've never met a man who can look at the sky and then the ground so many times while trying to hit a target in between as myself.

You missed some awesome matches.  We attempted drive-by swording today.

The best was when we pegged down the entire team to one respawn point on Guadacanal and mowed them down.
