John Hughes, the director and screenwriter who helped define a young generation with his ’80s films “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink,” has died, according to the Associated Press.

Michelle Bega, a spokeswoman for the filmmaker, said that Mr. Hughes died of a heart attack in Manhattan during a morning walk.

More to come.

Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, all good stuff.

Going to watch Planes, Trains & Automobiles this weekend.

Awesome movie!

It's funny. It never really grabbed me the first time, but with subsequent viewings it became one of my all time favorites. John Candy performs his role flawlessly.

The second half of the movie drags with needless drama, like an Apatow movie. But the movie is short, unlike an Apatow movie, so it's tolerable.

Yeah, it gets pretty sappy, but I finally came around to even liking those parts, probably due to my old age. :'(

I won't deny that it would have been a much stronger film if they had stuck the course as a straight-up comedy though.

Bethany: McHenry is pretty far from Jersey, might I ask what brings you guys to Illinois?
Jay: Some fuck named John Hughes.
Bethany: "16 Candles" John Hughes?
Jay: You know him too? That fucking guy. Made this flick "16 Candles" right? Not bad it's got tits in it, but no bush. Of course Ebert over here don't give a shit about that stuff cause he's all in love with this John Hughes guy and rents every one of his movies. Fucking "Breakfast Club" all these stupid kids actually show up to detention, fucking "Weird Science" where this one chick wants to take off her gear and get down, but aw, no she don't cause it's a PG movie, and then there's "Pretty In Pink" which I can't watch with this tubby muthafucker any more, because everytime we get to the part where the red head hooks up with her dream guy, he starts sobbin' like a little eight-year-old with a skinned knee and shit. And nothing is worse then watching a fat man weep.

I hope Kevin Smith is ok

So the man who defined the music of the 80's, and the man who defined the films of 80's died this year. So who defined the books and games of that decade? Stephen King and Miyamoto? uh oh

That's how you know it's a John Hughes movie.

Even so, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Uncle Buck were so awesome. Not to mention Home Alone and Beethoven. :'(

Don't worry, a remake will probably be coming in the next year or two.

I actually think that a sequel that tells the story of a middle-aged Ferris Bueller played by Matthew Broderick, directed and written by John Hughes would be one helluva movie concept.

I mean, the philosophy in Ferris Bueller's Day Off is even more relevant now than it was then, due to office jobs, over reliance on computers and more.

Matthew said he'd only be in a sequel if John wrote/directed it. Now it ain't happenin.

P.S. My mother said he's a better director then Spielberg. Anyone else like to agree with her and be wrong?

Spielberg from the past ten years? Easily. But not when Spielberg was at the top of his game: Jaws, Close Encounters, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T.
