Title: FFXIII
Post by: Bebpo on September 08, 2009, 02:07:56 AM
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/bebpo/PID_1105355_ff13_banner_after.jpg)

Expect a media blowout from now until December.  I'm on media blackout so yeaaaaaaah.  EXCITED though.  Hopefully this won't be a "years of waiting -> disappointment" like FFXII & DQIX were.  The demo was great and showed a lot of potential.

Except the mainline ones are all pretty good.  Plus this gen is TERRIBLE for jrpgs.  This is the first chance to have a real big budget epic and meaty j-rpg.

This is a release date ?

:omg

For Japan, yeah.  PS3/X360 US versions should be between March->June.

I'm too lazy to look for myself, is their video of combat gameplay? Last video I saw was the initial trailer and the combat looked like a mutation of 12, if this game is another single-player MMO grindfest, then count me out.

Seriously a demo? Did it come out in Japan only? Can you download it on PSN with a Japanese account?

EDIT: Holy shit that looks awesome.

I've played the demo. A friend of mine is a huge japafag and bought the Ps3 FFVIIAC bundle with the demo.
It was pretty good.

Can't wait to get th whole game. I'm also blocking new media out.

Yeah, this gen has been pretty lame for the jrpg.  Fortunately there have been awesome wowsome games like Fallout 3 to play.

Honestly Vesperia is the only one that seems good.

I think with the amount of good western RPGs that have come out recently people started to not give a shit.

Nah, we just realized that Japan is fucking useless this gen and we no longer expect shit from them after FFXIII.

I can't really think of too many western RPGs that I liked recently aside from the 2 Bethesda games... Prefer the oldskool Infinity Engine games and the Ultimas and such.

Nice to see FF13 has a date... hopefully the game will be somewhat decent, especially after the long-ass wait. FF games tend to be hit or miss with me, and lately it's been mostly miss.

This really is the gen of Western ascension, if by default if nothing else.  Honestly, name a Japanese based dev that HASN'T disappointed this gen, other than Capcom.

Does this mean 360 production is nearly finished or nearly starting. I can't recall how the production schedule on this thing was supposed to work.

At any rate, I'm there whenever the US American 360 version is released.

Post by: Hitler Stole My Potato on September 08, 2009, 11:28:07 AM
Vesperia and Fallout 3 are the only two RPGs that have been worth a damn this gen.

I think Blue Dragon had the potential to be good it had too many faults that were hard to overlook.  Liked it better than Lost Odyssey though.

The Last Remnant is supposed to be pretty good. Haven't played it myself, though.

Also: Mass Effect and The Witcher. Drakensang is pretty good too. And King's Bounty, of course.

Last Remnant, Mass Effect and Blue Dragon are all solid but unspectacular rpgs from this gen.  Actually, ME is a notch above the others but still not GREAT.  Then again, I'm a sucker for BioWare games- I bought and enjoyed Jade Empire, for the love of Christ.
Title: Re: FFXIII
Post by: Himu on September 08, 2009, 11:44:30 AM
This gen has seen a lot of good rpgs.

The problem is the general lack of GREAT rpgs and so far Fallout 3 and Vesperia only fill that void.

I'm talking bout consoles btw.

Post by: Human Snorenado on September 08, 2009, 12:14:00 PM
Jade Empire was a great homage to old, cheesy kung fu movies.  As an action rpg it kind of stunk but it sure was pretty to look at for it's time and had a mostly engaging story... up until the end anyway.

Jad9.9mpire was fucking terrible. Worst Bioware game ever.

For this gen, I'd say Lost Odyssey is the best jrpg. But overal best RPG is Demon's Souls.

I bought and enjoyed Jade Empire, for the love of Christ.

It had some good parts to it, namely the side quests and graphics/art style in a few areas, but the combat was janky and the main story felt kind of bland. The final act or two was just terrible, though. Way too rushed.

I enjoyed Blue Dragon (why the hate? it was great for what it was and you can get it now for $9.99) and Lost Odyssey quite a bit, still need to play through Vesperia.

And  :o @ the fucking ¥8,800 price-point on FFXIII! I'm planning on buying it, but ¥8800 = $95 and ¥9200 = $99.80! FUCK!

Not that I was planning on getting it at launch, but if it launches at more than $60 here for the vanilla, regular edition then it deserves to fail.  I think that's probably a case of Squeenix gouging the Japanese market because, well, they CAN.
Title: Re: FFXIII
Post by: Himu on September 08, 2009, 03:54:15 PM
why would the game be priced at more than 60 dollars in the us?

i can't think of any game who's regular edition costs more than 60 this gen aside from rockband/guitar hero.
Title: Re: FFXIII
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on September 08, 2009, 03:55:03 PM
FFX and XII were the same price.

Square's late SNES games were even more expensive.  Chrono Trigger was 11,400, which was $127 in 1995 dollars or $182 in 2009 dollars.

Anyway, +1 soundtrack purchase

Like recursive said, FFXII was the same price.  So was Star Ocean 4.  It's a SE tax thing.  Then again it's only about $10 more than the competition, as Bayonetta is $80 and so was Enchant Arms and stuff.

Yeah I'm just going to wait and get the US X360 Bayonetta for $20-30 less in January.  Not like there's much out in Jan and Oct is already very crowded.

Demon's Soul is a jrpg.

I consider JRPG as a genre, and not a product of who's developing it. JRPG is just one of the different styles of the RPG genre.

Demon's Souls is not a JRPG for me. It's definitely more of a WRPG-type...

Only fools pay full prices for games here in Japan.  Most retailers slash the price quite a bit...I would expect to pay around 6000-7000 for 13 when all is said and done.  I guess exporters sell games at full price tho, ouch.

One of my friends here is going to buy the FF13 bundle.  He doesn't have an HDTV, so he says he'll just leave the system at my place and come over to play it.  Haha, I guess it'll be one way to experience the game.

the way the battle system looked it was impossible for full party control, unless you had 6 arms or something.

I don't know why people thought full party control was in.
