Will so fucking support. I've had my preorder for a couple years now, before Sierra got bought by Activision and then dropped the game.

Day one.

Only question I'm gonna ask is has there been any word on if it runs ok on PS3?  I have it pre-ordered on that but since this is Double Fine's first game this gen and PS3 is a tough machine to program for........

Bebpo, there's no reason to chance a multiplatform game on the PS3 unless you've specifically heard there's no difference or it runs better.  360 should be default.

I'll check out the demo, but I'm already buying 3 full price games over the next month and a half or so.  THREE!  That's just silly.  I'll get this when it hits the magical $40 mark.

I didn't preorder so I won't try the demo until next week.  I'm curious about what type it will be.  E3 demo was action and driving stuff.  Recent demos were the multiplayer Action RTS gameplay that is supposed to be more of what the game is made up of.

PS3 is my default for multiplatform titles for a variety of reasons.  As long as it's near similar quality I'm fine with the PS3 version.  I'm hoping since this is the old and not intensive WoW engine that it'll run fine even on the PS3.....hoping.

I'm not sure WHY unless you just really, really dig on the dual shock or something.  I mean, most games developed using the 360 as their base platform end up cruddier on the PS3, and since it's apparently easier to develop for the 360 than the PS3...  It's not rocket science or anything, is all I'm saying.

Why do so many Bore-ians want to boycott this game? Did Tim Schafer anally rape Demi's mom? I'd totally buy this if I had a next-gen console, it looks fucking sick.
Title: Re: Brutal Legend thread
Post by: Human Snorenado on September 17, 2009, 04:58:20 AM
I dunno, it looks fun and Psychonauts was awesome.  I'm just kind of against paying $60 for games unless I deem them OMFG MUST OWN NOW NOW NOW.  And since I'm probably already buying Fallout 3 GOTY, Borderlands and Dragon Age this fall, it's hard for me to justify spending my hard earned monies... especially since I haven't had any jobs in about a month.

Ah, if I had an HD console, I'm not really interested in any other game this year except Brutal Legend. Kind of interested in Uncharted, but the stupid amount of hype is getting isn't a good sign.

What, that everyone loved the beta and is loving the demo?   :lol  It's going to be a great game.  The 21/20 thing was awful, though.

-My X360 freezes in games more often and causes me to redo sections which is annoying (my Lost Planet experience was basically ruined by this; Star Ocean 4 had a BAD freeze which almost caused me to quit playing, etc...)
-My X360 dies on me if I use it too much (I don't have a fancy falcon or whatever the new models are called.  Launch-era still)
-My brother only has a PS3 for blu-ray and I lend him games I think he'd like (he liked and beat Psychonauts; he's not a gamer)

If I had a newer X360 that I could rely on and never think twice about, I'd probably get more stuff on X360.  But as it is, I only feel that comfort when playing things on PS3.

Those are the main reasons.  Then little things like most of my friends are on PSN for comparing trophies, the fact I enjoy the dual shock more except in FPS games (which I get on X360), the save game manager/XMB, the HDMI black levels look better than my X360's component, etc... are just minor things that add to it.  If a game is significantly better looking on X360 I'll get it there (like in RE5's case I bought both X360 & PS3 version since I didn't want the graphically inferior PS3 one, but I wanted my brother to play it), but otherwise I'll just get everything multi on PS3 at this point.  Though most the bargain bin X360 versions are $5-15 less than the same game in the bin on PS3; so I get X360 versions there.

Well that's a valid reason.  If your 360 was still under warranty you should towel the fucker to death so you could get a replacement.

Day 1. Psychonauts was high-larious, challenging, and engaging. Except for the platforming sequence on the last boss. Which sucked.

Anyone else get one of the promotional shirts for Brutal Legend back when Sierra was releasing this?

Yup. I'm sporting the 3/4 sleeve T-shirt in '80s retro homage navy blue. Unfortunately it's XL and I'm an L, so it looks like a Hawaiian muʻumuʻu on me.

what ever happened to the idea that there would be section where we can use our rock band guitar?

The Dishwasher proved that it's a stupid idea. If you're playing with someone who's good enough to rip a riff for you, you should just be playing co-op.

Tried out the demo.  Presentation is top notch.  Menu screen is a guy messing around with a record, like, stop motion of a real person doing it.  The opening cutscene is hilarious.  The demo is just the intro of the game, so explaining the action combat and a brief driving sequence with boss fight.  Can't judge the action and driving too harsh since I know there is more later on.  Bad section for a demo.

Had to do the PS3 version since the 360 version would have taken too long; seems like a fine version of the game.  Only big difference I noticed from 360 videos is the frame rate was a bit off at times.  Only advantage seems like DTS audio.  Won't cancel Amazon 360 preorder.

It wasn't going to be made by Double Fine, EA was going to have another developer work on it. Not much was ever said.

Quote from: Wiki
When rumors of a possible Wii port arose in March 2009, Schafer stated that "We are making an Xbox 360 and a PS3 version of Brütal Legend."[42] However, according to Ben Fritz at Variety, another studio has been engaged by Electronic Arts to bring the game to the Wii, albeit at a later date than the other console versions, suggesting that it may follow the same model as Dead Space: Extraction, a Wii title scheduled to be released about a year after Dead Space's first release.[43] However, further industry rumors, which claimed that the Wii version was being done by Electronic Arts in-house, have stated that the effort to port the game to the Wii has been canceled due to quality and technical concerns.[44] There is presently no planned PC version of the game, as Schafer has stated that the game is primarily an action game and "meant to be on a console".[8]

1.58 GB demo. Worth it for the opening cinematic, where a nu-metal group gets their comeuppance. I laughed several times, but had to bail for work before getting more than 5 minutes of gameplay in.

Need a RealDoll of Ophelia. Someone in DF marketing, please see to it.

So I'm playing both demos back to back...PS3 version holds up quite well.

It is a shame the sound is tinny on PS3.  Hopefully this is fixed with the final version.

Running through 5.1 on 360 and as usual, PS3 version trounces the 360 version in actual surround quality.  But the effects are shittier.  5.1 shines through all 5 speakers on PS3...on my 360 I hardly hear a damn thing out of my rear speakers.  I checked my 360 settings and they are set to dolby digital.  Not sure why this is going on.

Not really.

Schaefer needs to go back to making adventure games with as little game play as possible.

His games are great when you aren't trying to control them like a regular video game character.

It was ok.  But it wasn't close to the brilliance of his adventure games like Maniac Mansion, Grim Fandango, or Full Throttle.  Heck even the first couple Monkey Island games (which I would put behind these three) are better than Psychonauts.

you get more abilities later on

...I traded in my old version of Fallout 3 a while ago.

Besides, with Brutal Legend, probably Borderlands and Dragon Age I'll have plenty of new games to keep me busy in the meantime.  Plus I am taking two classes this semester, so I kind of need to pay attention to school a bit.  Not that I've yet to get anything other than an A yet... it's funny how if you pay attention, study and do all of your assignments school is pretty easy.

I thought the demo was pretty disappointing. Sure, the writing was excellent, as I'd expect from Schafer. I love the heavy metal stylings and it's all very funny but the gameplay just felt too simplistic and uninteresting. There didn't seem to be much strategy in fighting the different creatures and it just wasn't satisfying. The camera wasn't doing it any favors either. I want to play through it just to see what happens but I doubt I'll buy this at full price, I'll probably wait a month and get it at €20.

But...it was at the beginning of the game.

Then again, in OoT, you have different ways to kill all the monsters you fight from the get go.

This is a Zelda-esque type game right? Or is it a sandbox type game?

I thought Dragon Age was delayed?

Alpha Protocol was delayed.  You might be thinking about that.

and Dragon Age actually looks kinda alright from the recent gameplay videos.  Bioware marketing is really awful (see: new mass effect 2 trailer http://www.gametrailers.com/video/subject-zero-mass-effect/56983  :nsfw) and the writing is pretty bad, but other aspects seem solid.  It seems like different classes at the start have quite different paths.

Apparently if you buy Brutal Legend at Best Buy you get a voucher for 3 Rock Band songs.  I don't know if it will be new songs or old stuff, though.  It would make sense to have some of the BL soundtrack show up as Rock Band DLC next week considering they release on the same day.

Granted, Psychonauts was a fine fit for the GameCube back then, but now... fuck the Wii.

Also, something about buying it and it comes with a 3-song voucher for Rock Band.

Yeah, but you've repeatedly proven that your opinion is worth about a pound of rancid crap, so no one CARES what you think.  Go bitch about the subways in Fallout 3 some more because you got scared, bitch.

The game isn't out for a week. If you're not a Sony exclusive, you don't get reviewed a month in advance.

Demo is too short for 1.5GB+ but I enjoyed what was there. Looking at the footage after finishing the playable part, it looks more like an RTS or a squad-direction game than a direct action game. Too bad the demo makes it feel like a mashy brawler with a car; I suspect it's got more than that when it goes to a full exploration game rather than a single hallway with a boss fight.

Are you fucking kidding me? This is my most hyped game this fall.

But I can't play the demo because I don't have a 360 or ps3 up here, which also means I can't play it on day one. I'm going to have to wait for Thanksgiving when I get a ps3 slim.

I have the ps3 version pre-ordered and paid in full.

yeah, it's the size of the original PS2 if you ignore how far back it goes.  If you cut off the back and made it a rectangle instead of a square, then it would be comparable.  It's even longer than the original PS3.  I think the actual height and thinness is a bit less than the PS2.

this seems like a nice comparison: http://xs343.xs.to/xs343/09374/ps2-ps2-xbox-xbox-360-wii-size-comparison816.jpg

over 10 cm longer than the PS2.  Smaller everywhere else, but damn.  It's even longer than the beast Xbox.  And wow, The PS3 is bigger than the original Xbox all around too.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but an opening salvo like that makes for a comical echo of message board blabber. If the game is appealing, it will sell. It's got EA backing it, it has received a ton of media attention, so it's up to the game now.

All it said was that the game is so good that it deserves to sell, and videogame media coverage and EA publishing doesn't necessarily translate into dollars (see: Mirror's Edge).

Still getting it, but now I'm gonna try and do some TRU buy 2 get 1 action with it tomorrow.  A side note- OH SWEET JESUS IS GOING INTO A TRU A PAINFUL FUCKING EXPERIENCE.  I had probably blocked out the stupid video game set up from past dealings with them, but the "grab a ticket and take it to the register" old school set up is just baaaaad.  And then you have to deal with the ignorant staff- I was trying to find out if they're gonna get Fallout 3 GOTY edition tomorrow and had to wait like 10 minutes for someone to have three separate phone/intercom messages with an unseen associate that could look it up only to find out "we don't know" AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU

I probably don't need to tell you this Federwang, but make sure that you're not actually losing out on that deal.  Lots of games on the list for that promotion will get you more than $20 in trade in credit at your local GS... although now that I think about it, Halo 3 is $39.99 new now, right?  And they're probably dropping the price on the OG Fallout 3 since GOTY is coming out, too.  Well, anyway it's good to be aware of it is all I'm saying.

Also, multiplayer tomorrow night.  :rock

There's no way you get $30 for Fallout 3, considering that is what it sells for used and GOTY edition is currently out.

So I may or may not be able to score $10 more (most likely not), and will have to ship said games out, instead of one quick transaction for approximately the same value at the place where I pickup my copy of a new game.

I'm not necessarily an advocate of trades and I trade in my stuff sparingly, for good reason, but when it makes sense, I'll bite.

http://www.gamestop.com/gs/specialty/tradeins/

Looks like you can get an extra 25% on your trade-ins towards certain titles, but Mangina Carta 2 isn't one of them.  There's another where you get and extra $10 in credit if you trade in 3 games, or an extra $20 if you trade in 4.  Although it only applies to X360, PS3 and Wii games, and excludes crap like old sports and Barbie games that would trade in for $2 or less.  I'm sure given your tastes you've got a pile of crap that would qualify.

So what the hell is going on with this game on NeoGAF? The game appears to have suddenly gained an obnoxious defense force, which must have given birth to a troll force, or is it the other way around? At worst, the game seems a bit blah, hardly something that would inspire the kind of passion these guys have for, or against it.

What Twerd said. Tim's games are always entertaining. Psychonauts gets bashed by some, but I really liked it and a lot of reviewers also seemed to like it plenty, and yet the game sold for shit. A lot of people who are fans of Psychonauts are in fear that Brutal Legend will get the same treatment: epic reviews, piss-ant sales. It would be nice to have a games marketplace where more than half the titles are not licensed properties, promoting other media. Tim's one of the guys that not only brings the originality, but doesn't fumble it at the last few yards prior to launch.

People can bash Psychonauts, but I felt the game had such creative level design in some places (The Milkman Conspiracy, Black Velvet, the Napoleon level, Goggalor) that I felt that made up for the poor platforming.

I've played every game that has Schafer's name in the credits and I enjoy each and every one.

I'm just about to fight my first big set piece battle- right after you help Ophelia get weapons for the Razor Girls.

Quick impressions so far:

-The world is awesome to look at.  While the game is not the most impressive in the graphics department, all of the metal iconography all over the place, the cool weather effects and stuff like flaming meteors falling in the distance make this a winner.
-The combat is kind of simplistic, but the game does a good job so far of giving you different stuff to do to keep things varied.  Utilizing your headbangers and other allies in battle helps.
-I'm pretty sure that this is the best voiceover work I've seen in any game... ever.  Everyone fits perfectly for their role and the dialog is, as always, top notch.  Lars is a bit of a ponce, but everyone else is awesome.
-The Metal Forge is bad ass, and so is Ozzy.  Upgrades are cool.
-The Face Melter solo is as awesome as you'd think.

My only real complaints are that I can see the side missions getting repetitive, since the bulk of them seem to be ambushes, and that as far as I can tell you can't turn rumble off.  I hate wasting my batteries.

Yeah I just got done with that a bit ago myself.  It was a lot of fun- although it's pretty powerful to be able to run into the middle of a group of enemies and pull of the face melter solo.  Those ranged girls on the other side are a pain in the ass, tho.  I think playing multiplayer in teams could be a lot of fun.

Because hearing cuss words isn't funnier than hearing bleeped words past the age of 10.

I cuss all the time; I don't give a shit. But I plan on playing BL with the cuss word filter on for a few chuckles.

Quote from: Tim Schafer
First, a note on the differences: In an RTS game you float high above the action, making one split-second strategic decision after another. You often command individual units to position them based on their heath and context. In Brütal Legend, you make strategic choices once in a while, but then you jump into the battle and slug it out in person. You can fly, but it's mostly for quick scouting and transportation. You will spend a few seconds every once in a while popping into a menu to build troops or pick a guitar solo, but then you should be right back in the action. To play the game most effectively you need to be on the ground with your army most of the time, mixing it up with your axe, and your guitar, but most of all-using your Double Team attacks.

Double Team attacks are critical to your success in Stage Battles. Every friendly unit in your army has a move that they can only perform in conjunction with the player character. These moves are extremely varied, extremely powerful, and extremely fun to perform. Sometimes you might simply gain control that unit's weapon-for instance, when a Razor Girl jumps up on your shoulders-but when you do so you increase it's damage significantly. Other units, like the Bride, seem to be just passive, debuffing units most of the time (the Bride slows down enemy units) but when you Double Team with her she has a devastating lighting attack. More complicated Double Teams include the Frightwig, who Ophelia can pick up and throw onto an enemy unit. The Frightwig then wraps itself around the enemy's head and causes the victim to join Ophelia's side in the battle. (You can even use this to commandeer the enemy's Rock Crusher!) The Organist is another passive unit whose Double Team attack allows you to gain direct player control over an enemy unit, giving you command over whatever attacks they normally have.

There are important strategic choices to make in Stage Battles. Should I spend my fans to upgrade my stage and gain access to more powerful units, or should I spend it now on cheap infantry? Which fan geysers should I fight for and which should I concede? What is the right time to block my enemies troop production with a Rock Block solo? Would anti-infantry units be better against the current enemy army, or should I switch to anti-vehicle? But these strategic decisions only take a second, and then you should get right back in the action. You should never be up in the air or away from the battle for too long.

Some people find it hard to split up the army and give individual orders to individual troops. This is kinda true, mostly because you shouldn't be doing it! That's how you play an RTS game, not how you should play Brütal Legend. True, there are times where you might want to split your army, but it's not common. I play complete Stage Battles most of the time without issuing a single Individual order. Your army is most effective when it's together. The AI automatically groups your warriors into battle formations where the troops support each other. Many of the units buff or heal each other. When they are together they can all be enhanced with a single Battle Cry (or other buffing) solo. And when they are all together and you are in the middle of them, that is when you have the greatest number of options for Double Team attacks.

So to summarize my advice for playing Brütal Legend Stage Battles:
Get in the center of the action!
Use Double Team attacks!
Don't stay in the air too long!
Use Double Team attacks!!
For the most part, keep your army together!
Use Double Team attacks!!!
Don't think of it as an RTS game!

If you have tried the Stage Battles before reading these tips, and felt overwhelmed by the controls, or frustrated with the lack of detailed troop controls, I'm hoping you will be able to take this info and go back into the fray and be much more successful. We know that the Stage Battles are tons of fun for most players-and for people who are open to new kinds of action gameplay experiences, they are in fact the core of what makes Brütal Legend a fun game experience and unlike any other. I'll see you online!

-TimOfLegend (that's my name on both XBL and PSN. Play against me and you'll get an achievement!)

P.S. Here are some more tips from our Lead Designer, Erik Robson:

General Tips
*Early in the game, low-level troops are vulnerable to enemy Avatar harassment; make sure you watch over them and protect them if necessary.
*USE YOUR DOUBLE TEAMS!
*Don't play timidly. The game is about projecting power and taking control of territory. If you try to play defensively and stay in or near your base, you'll be at a resource disadvantage.
*If you set the beacon on a building, your dudes will attack the building until it's destroyed, ignoring any incoming attacks.
*The right solo played at the right time can be devastating - don't forget you have those tools at your disposal!

Ironheade Tips
*Ironheade is extremely mobile - use this to your advantage.
*Razor Girls' Double Team is great for dealing with early-game Avatar harassment.
*Remember that you can upgrade your level 1 troops once your stage hits level 3. If you've spent the game massing up those small infantry, an upgrade can really pay off.

Drowning Doom Tips
*Gravediggers, while more numerous, have lower health than other basic melee troops. They may need extra support in the early game.
*Use your debuffers (Bride, Organ, and Dirgible). They're powerful, and the Bride and Organ stack their debilitating effects.
*Bride's Double Team is great for dealing with early-game Avatar harassment.
*Remember that you can upgrade your level 1 troops once your stage hits level 3. If you've spent the game massing up those small infantry, an upgrade can really pay off.

Tainted Coil Tips
*Your hierarchy units (Nuns, Warfather, and Overblessers) are extremely vulnerable while alone. They're much safer when they're surrounded by minions, because they get a small stacking healing bonus from each nearby minion.
*Punishing Parties' Double Team is good for dealing with early-game Avatar harassment.
*Remember your Superior and Divine troops - for example, if you build a Warfather, he can then build a Superior Nun, which in turn can produce Superior Soul Kissers and Punishing Parties. Superior and Divine squads are more powerful than the basic troops, but cost the same!

I just don't like metal much.  When they were making fun of the emo metal shit, that was funny.  Now it just seems like a big wank fest to metal stuff and not really satire or anything.  It's just people making observations about metal culture and it's totally lost on me.

The gameplay and all that is alright.  The big problem is that there is no feedback for anything you do or happens to you.  Like, in one of the missions, I was fighting some guy and suddenly it says brutal defeat without even giving me a hint of what I did wrong.  Apparently I was escorting someone, but they never mentioned that they were in trouble.  Even damage done to your own character doesn't seem to register until the screen goes red.  I only said so far because the RTS stuff is building up and it can get better from here.

Because I liked most other Tim Schafer games and the demo was pretty funny and I thought the humor would be more inline with that than straight up metal jargon.  His past games didn't actually require you to have past experience with the setting to find them interesting.  Like, I'm not a biker or even into that stuff but Full Throttle is probably my favorite adventure game.   I'm also still hopeful that as the RTS stuff expands it becomes more interesting.  So far it's more of an action game than previews led me to believe.  Everything I've been saying has been prefaced with "so far" because I'm not even half way done (according to the percentage counter) and it could end up getting better.  Just so far it hasn't been too great.

And the escort mission was that one where you first went to meet the guy from Motorhead.  Also doing some of those side mission with the headbangers ambush.

There are definite audio cues for the escort stuff, ambush side missions are just that - ambush side missions. They're kind of like tutorials for the larger stage battles.

Sorry you don't get all the metal stuff, but that's why I find it incredibly awesome. My brother and I are pretty big metal fans, and this is kind of like a dream come true for the two of us.

my final consensus on single player is that it was alright.  It really did feel like a tutorial and when it seems like you finally learned everything, it just ends.  I don't know if it has online skirmish battles or not that might add to it.  It never really became funny and the story was mildly interesting.  The actual world and metal style grew on me, and some of the music I enjoyed more than I expected to.  And it says I played for about 8 hours.  I didn't do all the side missions but I did spend a good amount of time just driving around finding stuff.

The game is pretty funny throughout, but will rely on musical knowledge the deeper the game goes on. I could see people with no knowledge of metal or rock not getting a lot of the humor.

... swaggaz, if you feel that way, you should play the game online. The single player was built around the multiplayer - even Schafer thinks the game is more like a tutorial for its online component.

I thought the story and everything was rad. Really dug it. One of my favorite games of the year.

Looking forward to what Double Fine has in store for DLC.

I still think the single player is stronger than the multiplayer, I was merely talking about how he felt the gameplay was a tutorial - and in that effect, it is.

The game has flaws. It's a jack of all trades and a master of none. Schafer tried to reinvent the wheel, when merely using preexisting methods of gameplay from any number of action titles and Overlord would have sufficed.

It's still fun, but I do felt that the core gameplay never, truly feels completely satisfying. I never felt like I mastered anything.

The story and characters and world are incredible, though. Some of the missions are really fun.

Music rocks.

I'll probably play online sometime.  I checked and saw that there are skirmishes against the AI, which is good enough for me.

What I was expecting the structure of the game to be was:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
glam rock group covers the tutorial -> depressing/dark rock is a series of battles -> demon rock is a series of battles.  You barely had one with the demon rock guys.
[close]
and that's just about the RTS stuff.  Early on, there were still some signs that it was an action game, like in that spider lair, but then that stuff just disappears.  It's just a really weird single player game.

wait, I remember another time when the game was funny.  One section has Through the Fires and Flames (that Dragonforce song) playing and it seems sarcastic because it was used was such cheesy usage of it.  At least I laughed when it happened.

I thought it was action game but the rts stuff is heavily emphasized? :rock

It's hard to explain.  Everything you do before you're in the thick of the RTS gameplay is still there during the RTS gameplay.   Like, you're expected to drive the car around on the battlefield, hack and slash enemies, team up with the units, etc.  But that action gameplay and driving stuff isn't too good because the "true" gameplay doesn't really focus on them.  The single player basically teaches you the game by evolving from the action game from the demo to something like Overlord to the full on RTS mode.  But nothing from the previous stages is really lost.  It's all to teach you how to play the final RTS stuff.

What about when Riggs and Mangus are talking about "preparing to die"? Eddie's dream montage of walks on the beach and slaying demons? Anything with Genral Lionwhyte? Etc.?

All the stuff the emo units say ("Nobody understands our sorrow...")?

C'mon, dude.

Don't you have a date with some horse nipples?  Begone, troll.

Willco is basically right about the game- it has some errors in design but that doesn't stop it from being really fun and definitely worth a purchase imo.

Honestly, "errors in design" is probably too harsh a criticism... lack of focus on any one aspect of the game kind of keeps it from excelling in any one area and instead just ends up being merely good in a couple is a better way to put it I suppose.  I still haven't beaten the game yet but I kind of feel like the RTS battles (which aren't REALLY rts battles, as Schafer pointed out in that Kotaku piece posted earlier in the thread) are the best part of the game but there aren't that many of them... yet anyway, like I said I figure I'm probably half way through the game.  I need to play some online multi soon too.

Even if it seems I'm down on the game I'd also say it's worth the purchase (granted, I got it at around half price) if you enjoy RTS games.  I mean, it's one of the few good console RTS games out there that seem to be designed for consoles.  And it is an RTS despite Schafer claiming it's not.  The only thing that makes it different is the ability to go down and fight with your other units; however, alone you barely do any damage and double teaming with a unit is basically a buff to make them stronger (with you in control).  It's not like the game becomes a Musou game where you can take out piles of enemies alone.  Even with the most powerful car weapon, you won't be doing that much damage to enemies or buildings.  When in the air, your character just acts like a cursor.  You can't do solos or attack from up there and only command troops.

I don't get it.  Is there a way that I can find out how much damage I've taken besides having the screen turn red right before I die?  I need a lifebar up in this.

The screen turns red and the music fades about three times before you die. Since it's regenerative health, an indicator seems kind of meaningless. Not to mention, that the only way to really die in combat is to assault a vehicle or from another avatar.

Well then I've discovered a new way to die.  I'm somewhere towards the beginning of the game where you're going through the spider caves and have died about 3 times now from the swarm.  Maybe I'll bump the difficulty back to normal.

Yeah, the game is not the demo. It's not on rails, it's an OWG. It's not a buttonmashing brawler; playing on Brutal the random encounter fights can get serious pretty quickly, but even against the overpowered-looking hordes in the demo it was impossible to die.

My copy arrived yesterday and I've put about three hours in, game says I'm 22% done -- I'm having fun, but I think it's gonna be short.

I'm at 47% from pretty rigorously following up on the side missions. (Ambush, Ambush, Ambush, Race, Ambush...) I've just now cleared the Wall of Speakers mission to get weapons for the Roadie unit class. So far I am enjoying the humor and the exploration (the vistas are excellent; I want wallpapers) but I suck at RTS so even the "RTS-lite" nature becomes frustrating.

Maybe if I play some online battles I can get trained up in a hurry, but because of the way I'm playing -- lots of driving/exploring between RTS story missions -- I have a tendency to forget the controls for waypoints, summon the SOLO wheel instead of the UNIT wheel, etc.

by the time you warm up to the rts the game will be over. i was kinda shocked at how quickly the conclusion came. storywise they just give you the 5min rundown at the end of the game which, imo, really hurt the overall experience since one of the big draws to this game is the writing, story, and characters. shoehorning all the revelations into one scene at the end was lame.

Great. Day 2 of same mission. I am torn over trying to get all the available Dragon Statue buffs for Eddie so that he gets more HP, faster regen, and regens his nearby troops, practicing against the singleplayer-vs-AI RTS skirmish mode -- or just lowering the fucking difficulty.

I am seriously not enjoying this mission at this point, and need to make a "life decision" to play this for fun or to play it for the 'cheevs. I want to finish on "Brutal," but it's turning out to be more really-real-brutal than expected.

And the next mission (Which may be the last mission in the game?) appears to be heaploads worse frustrating.

You know, the last mission in Psychonauts was crazy frustrating, and all I was targeting there was completion. Here, I'm afraid some fellow borito will get the "completed on Brutal" 'cheev and I'll feel left out.  :-[

But in truth, as was Card Cheated and Demified, the game is not as good as Psychonauts, except in its setting (which is fuck-awesome).

Working Brütal Legend again; I'm still on the same mission, but finding some hope after getting a pretty good run on it last night, until I called my army to my position (Battle Cry) and the bulk of them did their pathfinding directly in front of the enemy stage.  :-\

It turns out my main problem earlier was squad composition and not staying on the upgrades. Tim Schafer lies when he says it's not an RTS. Sure, there are brawler elements, but it's an RTS in spades.

I've changed my mind. Game rocks, now that I've figured out how to play it. It's still an RTS, and the singleplayer game does not do a thorough job teaching how to deal with "Load," managing split forces, tech development, etc. But actually playing that level with more thorough knowledge of the game mechanics was pretty fun. Also, harassing the enemy by drying The Deuce next to their stage and activating splash-damage weapons during a drive-by: :rock :rock :rock

Double Fine's rocking, semi-strategy game, Brütal Legend, which debuted on Rocktober 13, totaled 216,000 units in sales across two platforms during October: 150,000 on Xbox 360 (almost enough to launch it into the monthly top ten) and 66,000 on PS3. This total fails to hit analyst Jesse Divnich's prediction for the month. However, Divnich suggested that Brütal Legend would go on to be an attractive holiday item -- something that may also be true for the bulky box with the cool turntable thingy in it.

Christ. I hope sales pick up for Christmas. The game deserves to do a lot better than this.

Tuesday onward is open for me! You may want to play a little beforehand; last time I tried, I realized I'd forgotten all the RTS controls.

Interviews point to it actually being a 20-25 hour long main quest with more side quests in the overworld but they ultimately decided they still want to use the RTS halfway through development I believe. Which led to actual bosses, levels, gameplay and such being scrapped for RTS missions instead. While I liked the RTS missions I can't help but feel like they would have been better off without it.

Game is still good, but the shift of focus to RTS marked a shift of quality for me and plenty of others, which is why you still find people bitching about false advertisement and what not.
I don't remember any of that talk, and my impression is that RTS was in from the beginning, before it turned out that RTS-on-console is basically a recipe for How Not to Sell At All. However there are enough open-world components which make me think that maybe there were more incidental encounters and exploration.

It's documented that there was a whole other faction which was dropped from the world; there was another island, on which lived a race of Rat Fink style hot-rodders, of whom the froggish racing opponent is the only remaining vestige.

Has anybody ever made the comparison that the "RTS" bits in this game are akin to Herzog Zwei? The gameplay is nearly the exact same (especially once you're able to fly), you just get to romp around a heavy metal open world between missions.

Anyways, I'm stoked to be getting this on PC and hopefully I can finish it this time.

This is one of the worst RTS games ever made.

edit: I found some of my initial impressions in the What are you playing? thread:

Currently trying to enjoy Brutal Legend.  It's tough.  Not like, the game is tough - it's tough to enjoy.  I love the humor, I love the art, the setting, the music -- I was really digging it for awhile in spite of being peppered with relatively minor, yet annoying oversights in design (like, why the fuck is there no mini-map on the HUD?) -- but where I am now, just as the goth people appear and the RTS is in full-swing, it's pissing me off more than anything.

I could go on and on about things I'm finding irritating with the RTS: no indication as to the units you're selectings as you issue broad commands; issuing commands to individual groups is like building a Rube Goldberg machine to make toast; units seemingly taking priority on combat over your commands if they're already engaged, making it impossible to retreat or shift position until everyone is dead, one way or the other; random target selector on 'Attack', which is more like 'Attack Move' anyway because...; it's apparently impossible to focus-fire on any individual target, even if you were to get lucky and somehow select the actual target you wanted to attack (although the A.I. doesn't have a problem doing this, of course, as they always managed to rush and gangbang my ranged units or healer).

There are plenty more I won't bother to mention, but I think that about covers the ones that stand out the most since they all effect my ability to coherently strategize without ridiculous exertion.  And they're effectively ruining my experience with the game.

I'm sure someone out there has opposition to at least one or all of those issues.  If anybody's figured this fucking game out, by all means, please tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong.

edit: reading the official thread, it seems I shouldn't be trying to play this game as an RTS and instead just be doing more stuff w/ Eddie and using more Double Team attacks.

My suspicion is, like many other Doublefine genre offerings, it doesn't please people who are heavily invested in that genre. DF doesn't make hardcore games which appeal to the core-of-the-core audience; they make pretty mainstream stuff, I think.

Okay, so, I boosted today for the 50 wins and it went great. Unfortunately, I still need the one for Ranked or Brütal AI 10 wins on Hammer of Infinite Fate DLC achievement. It's my last one.

Scenester, I may need your help. Brütal AI on those maps is spanking me.

Well we can give it a shot, but I think that my ping sucks too bad for us to get matched up. Well, if we do manage to get matched up, I wouldnt mind if you could help me with the 50 wins one  :'(

My SP progress is going real well, only a couple more missions to go and I'll have beaten the game on Brutal. What an awesome game.

Starting now and through the next two hours, I am running a boosting session for Brütal Legend through trueachievements.com.

We are prioritizing to achievements participants' but it would be great if any of you want to join. I should have posted sooner, but didn't think about it.

It will be a surrender fest, for boosting speed's sake, but after we clear the Achievements, ill be on to play.

ah gutted I missed this, my ping may have not been an issue if there were many other players on. All good, I can always try and boost with fellow kiwis/aussies

Got the last one. The TA.com solution for the Achievement worked a treat. That really is an ugly AI bug. So I got just under half my Brütal AI wins legit, and now I can put the disc to bed permanently.

I know the RTS stuff is not hardcore-satisfying, but I loved this game, and think it should have been better-received than it was.

beat the game on Brutal difficulty last night. I can't believe how good I am at videogames.

The "RTS" shit is in fact awesome, and makes the game better than if it were to be simply just your average hack n slash adventure game. It's innovative and interesting. Not my fault people just want to investigate zombie reports, neutralize tangos, and hack the CIA intel database in every game.

Glad you ended up having fun with it. I was unsure about it when I bought it as your seekrit santa, so long ago.

Well you know I'm a fiend for sandbox games and collectibles! In retrospect I was surprised RDR didnt have a ludicrous amount of arbitrary collectibles for health upgrades. I was expecting "collect the 120 hidden sherrifs badges" and the like

Are you fucking kidding me? What do you thing all the Herbalist and Hunter side content was? I mean, sure, they're not missable, one-off items, but they are still collectibles we had to do both in singleplayer and exactly all the same shit again in multiplayer. GAH! It was not fun the second time.

Single player has a radio playlist function, iirc; you can tell it which songs you never want to hear at least.
