Wonder when they'll make a PS3.  Sony has been pretty quiet on that for the past few years.

I still miss my old PS1.  I traded it in when I bought my PS2 and a few months ago I bought a PSone (with screen) for $30 at Gamestop.   But so far I haven't figured out a way to play imports on it.  On my old PS1, I would do the paperclip trick where you swap a NA disk with the import one.  PS1 was the first system that I started importing games for.

I never had a PSX/PS1. I pretty much sat out the Saturn/Playstation/N64 era and did all my gaming on the PC (the only versions of FFVII and VIII that I've played are the PC iterations). I got back into consoles when I started college and bought a Dreamcast. I did buy a ton of PSX games when I got my PS2 in 2000, though.

So Borys are you getting a 360 to play FFXIII?

No. Getting a PS3 Slim for that as soon as it hits 999 zlote. For FF13 and GoW3.

Be smart.  Get a 360 for FF13 and Bayonetta.

I kind of agree. I've played many more games on 360 than I ever did on PS2, sad thing is that I am now on my third console while my PS2 from 2001 is still kickin  :-\

My family rented a PS1 when it first came out (choice games we rented with it were Wipeout, NFS and PO'ed).  I ended up getting an N64 that Christmas and that was my only system for a while, but I occasionally played the PS1 at a friends house.  I bought it myself a few years later (98 I think).  I think the game that made me really need it was Armored Core.  I bought my PS2 because of Armored Core 2.  I used to really like that series  :lol

and despite owning the N64 first, I think the PS1 had far more games of quality on it.  Just the surge of jrpg was insane.  Still liked my N64 a lot and the games I liked most were on that (OoT).  I remember that year being one of the only years where I was really shocked by my Christmas present.  Basically, my family went to Toys R Us to buy an N64 with Mario 64, but they were sold out.  My mom said to buy Mario 64 anyway, so I did.  Later I realized that she secretly went across the street and bought an N64 from Best Buy.  What a treat that was.

Demi's right. The western games are alot better on 360 than PS2 (western games in general are better this gen). If you are mainly interested in Japanese games, like Tiesto, then I can understand why 360 is disappointing from a content perspective.

There's a ton of Japanese content though. And it's better.

The only thing X360 does better is online play.

Ps2 had a much more diverse and overall better quality of titles to choose from.

Ps2 had great console exlusives and wasn't riddled with bad PC ports.

Only exclusive games PS2 was lacking in were exclusive shooters.  You had the SOCOM games, which everyone seemed to love but I never got into, and Killzone lol.  There were still fun multi-console shooters, but I bought all of those for Xbox.  It also had the best platformers last gen, mostly from western devs.
Title: Re: Playstation is 15 years old now
Post by: Olivia Wilde Homo on December 05, 2009, 11:54:55 AM
360 isn't anywhere near the PS2.

The PS2 had dat quality and in a nice quantity too.  Every genre was represented well.  It was a rare moment where every relevant third party produced their flagship wares on it.  It was the only time we'd probably ever experience a one console generation along with the NES.  The Xbox had some decent titles but they were mostly FPS.  Frat gamers saved the Xbox from total irrelevancy.  The GC is pretty lol, Nintendo was at their worst here, thinking that in a time where nobody gave a fuck about them that it was ok to start tinkering with their flagship franchises by saddling them with unnecessary and cumbersome gimmicks.

Being the last major j-game system is not a big deal at all.  Most western games suck, aping D&D fantasy or sci-fi bullshit, neither of which tickle my pickle.  Although I do want to get around to finally playing Fallout 3.  It seems like one of the rare moments where a western RPG isn't a total fanwank.  I still like my j-games and wish developers didn't want to just dump a bunch of SNES or first or second year era PS One shit on the DS instead.  I doubt Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey did that terrible and if they want more sales, they could just release it on both PS3 and 360.  Oh wellz.

360 does have a much better online system than the PS2.  The achievements and xbox live community is probably responsible for the high software:hardware ratio.  It is a great system that keeps gamers from putting the 360 in the closet like the Wii and keeps them wanting to play the latest and greatest.  It is also obvious that people are willing to pay money for Live, something dumbfuck Sfags assumed would be a fatal flaw for Live.  Then again Sfags thought that Killzone 2 was going to sell gangbusters but a couple months later, it was getting outsold by low budget fitness games lol.

If people suggest the PS3 is better than the PS2, they're a mongoloid.  If you think the Wii is better than the PS2, it is time to become an hero.

The X360 is no PS2.

None of the systems this gen are PS2.  PC could be the closest now that it's getting definitive versions of Japanese games like NSMB Wii, SFIV, Ninja Blade, Last Rem + definitive versions of western games + indie exclusive stuff BUT console devs are still lame about making PC versions of every game.  If there was a PC version of everything on consoles and steam achievements on everything PC would be the best system ever.

9/9/95 will always be stuck in my head.  I was so amped about the PS1 coming out and I was re-reading my Next Generation magazines so much that they were basically falling apart.  I don't think I was ever so excited about a console in my life...well, the SNES was close....but I was completely geeking out over the Playstation.  Of course that date will also stick out in my mind because the night before I went to a house party, got completely torn up, fucked my girlfriend's best friend, and had my car impounded.  I woke up on 9/9/95 in the back of some guy's van and had to wait until 10am, the time the impound lot opened, so I could get my car and pick up that damned Playstation.  Of course then I got bit by the fucking dog at the lot so I had to go to the emergency room before I could even make it over to Kay-Be Toys (good lord, are they even still around?).  Sometime later that afternoon I finally got home so I could be mezmerized by Battle Arena Toshinden's Gouraud shading, lol.

I also being totally blown away that you could take out the Ridge Racer disc after it got done loading and then replace it with a music cd and have that playing instead of the game's music.  PS1- tech beast.

I remember thinking how incredible it was to be playing basically an exact replica of Tekken at home, especially since it was still pretty new in the arcade at the time.   And my brain absolutely melted the first time I played Twisted Metal and Warhawk a little later on.  Now that was some amazing stuff back in '95.

I have a hard time going back and playing PS1 stuff 'cause I think that generally they haven't aged all that well but imo that era was the biggest generational leap in gaming.  Lots of good memories.
Title: Re: Playstation is 15 years old now
Post by: bork on December 06, 2009, 05:01:09 PM
I remember first seeing the PS-X in action at the end of 1994.  The Electronics Boutique I always went to had Battle Arena Toshinden playing on their TVs.  I was like " :o It's out?!" and the clerk said "naw man, my friend imported one and I'm playing a VHS of footage he recorded."

Then later on, in summer '95, I went to Dragoncon and the video game store I'd end up working at had a Playstation with Toshinden set up.  The line to play it was MASSIVE.  I didn't care because they also had a Neo-Geo with Samurai Shodown II.

I worked my ass off all summer and saved up enough to get a Playstation at launch.  Also took major advantage of EB's trade-in deal where you'd get $10 or more on any SNES games.  We'd find games priced cheaper than this and buy them all (I think it was Sam's Club that had Super Ghouls N' Ghosts for $5) to trade in for more credit.

As I was incredibly impatient back then, I almost made the huge mistake of buying a Virtual Boy at launch.  It was my father who talked me out of it and basically said I'd be fucking nuts to waste my money on that crap.   :lol

Got a Playstation on 9/9/95 with Battle Arena Toshiden, Ridge Racer, NBA Jam TE, and Street Fighter The Movie.  As I recall, Jam went back to the store for The Raiden Project, and SF The Movie was returned for something else.  Toshinden got pretty old after a few weeks, and then everyone was back on the SNES playing Street Fighter.  I played the shit out Ridge Racer and The Raiden Project.  Other games purchased were Tekken, Twisted Metal, Zero Divide (loved the Tiny Phalanx shmup that was hidden), and Rayman, which got plenty of play time.  Despite liking the demo for it, I never did get Jumping Flash! until importing the sequel almost a year later.  Still have the old demo discs, including the "black ice" disc.  Wonder if that's worth something?

A few months later, I got into importing.  Early Playstation models could make use of a swap trick, where you could just tape down the lid button and use American game discs as boot discs to swap out with Japanese games.  I was mainly interested in Street Fighter Zero, but ended up getting one of the Live Power Pro baseball games and the Twinbee Deluxe Pack beforehand.  Then in December, Street Fighter Zero came out, and I went NUTS.  A perfect port of the game I was playing in the arcades?  Several months ahead of the U.S.?!  Crazy!  I got pretty heavily into importing at this point and never looked back.  I always wondered why games like Tekken 2 (came out like 8 months ahead of the U.S. version) and Tekken 3 (six months or so ahead) took so long to come out.

Anyway, I loved the Playstation.  It was easily the best 32-bit system released, and without question the "NES" of its time.  So many classics.

Honestly, I wasn't terribly impressed with what I saw with the PS1 at first. I remember playing Ridge Racer and MK3 over a high school friend's house when he got a launch system. I was just thinking it was another 3D0/SEGA-CD/etc system that wasn't ever gonna go anywhere, and to wait for the "Ultra 64". Saturn had my eye a bit, due to the RPGs, but it wasn't till FF7 was announced for PS1 that I seriously considered it - got the system for Christmas 1996, along with copies of Tekken 2, Resident Evil, and Contra: Legacy of War.

Got my PS1 back on Christmas '98. It was a good time to jump in because the Dual Shock and Final Fantasy 7 had just hit the scene a few months prior. The first games I got were FF7, Heart of Darkness, and Spyro the Dragon. FF7 really blew me away, although I distinctly remember not being too impressed with the character models even during the CG scenes ["Link in Ocarina of Time looks better than this!"]. Good times.

yeah, the PS1 didn't really blow me away when I first saw it.  Both Mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64 were the games that made me think 3D was so incredible.  It was still impressive and all, it was just like, the majority of the games were done poorly before on existing systems.

I never bought into that whole "N64 ushered in the era of 3D gaming" nonsense or "that it wasn't until Mario 64 that real 3D gaming was achieved" line of thought.  I mean I loved Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 and played the hell out of them (you obviously had no choice during the early months of the N64 ), but I don't know how that was any more immersive than some of the 3D stuff that came out before on the PS1 like Kings Field.  I know, apples and oranges, but I didn't think it was as big of a step as people made it out to be.

Of course back then everyone was being spoon fed a metric ton of shit from Nintendo and the press about "Project Reality" that the expectations for the system were off the charts so I suppose I can understand some of the feelings about the machine.

I remember plays King's Field back on the PS1. Its what set the bar for what I was looking for in a game type (as far as first person sword and magic games). Lots of ambiance, exploring, desolation etc . I still cannot believe no dev studios have picked up on this style of game yet.

I didn't play Kings Field and a lot of early PS1 games.  I'm merely talking about what I was exposed to as someone who bought a PS1 after the N64.  I didn't have access to the internet and could only compare what I saw, and to me it was comparing the few PS1 games I did play to older 3D-ish games like Doom or Star Fox.  Like, if I played Jumping Flash when it came out, I'm sure that would have been just as impressive.  But I didn't.

the first console i bought was a psx until then i was an amiga guy (love the amiga!) the first three game i played (i think they were borrowed i can't remember) were tomb raider, syndicate wars and abe odyssey
kinda a sad list,i know but the console novelty still made me play quite a lot of these three

the first rpg i played was the original suikoden but after getting my hands on an article about FF7 i couldn't think about anything else and after getting my hand on it,i just stopped playing anything else (including suikoden) and that was how a weeaboo was born :rock :rock :rock
