Title: VGA Game Premieres
Post by: Stoney Mason on December 07, 2009, 12:38:30 AM
On the 12th. Apparently a bunch of videos for games will be shown. I don't give a crap about the awards or if your favorite game or your favorite system validates your love by winning something but video game footage of new games is always nice.

Stolen from a GAF thread so I have no idea if he is right or not but the dude who is updating that thread posted this below.

Quote
Okay, so when they first announced this we found out who seven of the publishers were going to be and that they were going to have at least 11 games at the show. Currently, if we include Dead Space 2 due to Keighley's rather obvious hint, we have 10 games and only Warner is missing. Warner also accidentally sent out their 2010 schedule, so it seems we know what they're making as well.

So unless they have more than 11 games for the show, it seems this might be the final list:

2K:
1.) Spec Ops

Activision:
2.) Black Lotus

Disney Interactive Studios:
3.) Tron

Electronic Arts:
4.) Dead Space 2
5.) Medal of Honor

LucasArts Entertainment:
6.) New Star Wars Game

Microsoft Game Studios:
7.) Halo Reach
8.) Crackdown 2

THQ:
9.) UFC Undisputed 2010

Ubisoft:
10.) Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

Warner Bros. Interactive:
11.) F.E.A.R. 3 or LotR RPG 360/PS3

Quote
Halo Reach’s premiere at the VGAs next week will be a true, in-game showing of the title and looks set to debut 2010’s biggest game “by far,” if Spike’s Geoff Keighley’s comments on the latest Major Nelson podcast are to be believed.
“At the VGAs we’re actually going to be able to go down on the planet Reach and see this game for the first time,” said the presenter.
“It’s all going to be in-game stuff. This is not CG, this is not live action, like all the kids on Twitter are speculating. You’re going to get a first glimpse of the world of Reach, which is phenomenal.
He added: “I think it’s going to be the biggest game of next year by far. Folks loved ODST and thought it was great, but when people see the huge leap forward Bungie’s taking with Reach… Everyone I’ve talked to that’s been on the team and seen it is incredibly excited about that game.”
Hot shit. These quotes are pretty much the first thing Keighley says in his segment. Listen to the file at about 1.18.
The VGAs take place on December 12

I don't know about bringing Isaac back. I liked his character but Dead Space was more about the ship and mythology. It didn't matter who you played as. Plus I really enjoyed the ambigious ending.

It will be interesting to see where they take the series. If they set it on another ship it could be argued that it's just more of the same. I'm hoping they take us deeper into the planet and to where the Marker was actually excavated from. That would make for some pretty creepy and claustrophobic locations once again. Hell bring Isaac back with a squad of Marines and go from there.

I would hope it would expand its concept sort of like Alien to Aliens but if its just another ship crawl, as long as its enjoyable, I probably would be fine with that also.

I think Issac is shaping up to be an iconic video game character for EA, much in the same way Chris Redfield is for Capcom.

Outside of a handful of videogame nerds on a messageboard no ones knows either character or cares about either character. People are focused on the gameplay in these series. Laura Croft or even Nathan Drake they are not.

I never said he was already, I said he was shaping up to be.

And I'm pretty sure more people know about Chris than Drake.

Yes because one series is much bigger than the other. Only RE nerds know who Chris Redfield is. The same types who know who Heihachi Mishima is.

I won't believe anything until I play the game for myself. Between the Halo 2 E3 demo and the touched up "in-engine" Halo 3 stuff, Bungie can't be trusted.

Excited about the Medal of Honor stuff, though. Not enough so to watch this miserable tripe, but I'll look around for the footage for sure.

If anything was iconic about the first game, it was how they handled the HUD, but I guess the parts you can show off are the visor and how they handled the laser beam.

Personally, I think it would be fucking awesome if they went Aliens on this sequel and did make it more action packed because you're now more prepared for the threat.  They made a big deal about how in the first game you were using worker space suits and tools to fight off the enemies.  There were military weapons, but those too weren't designed to fight off the monsters.  Assuming this game takes a good bit of time after the first game, it would be cool if the new weapons were designed to fight these monsters.  The suit in that picture looks straight up Iron Man in parts.

Not too keen on multiplayer, though. I blame Green Man. The only way this will be acceptable is if they essentially ripoff L4D and let you play coop campaigns with randomly generated enemies. Or Necromorphs vs humans.

Now for an interesting bit which I'm not sure fans will like or hate. It seems the makers are aware that people in the first game could only play 30 minutes to an hour always on the edge something was going to happen all the way through. Speaking as a horror fan that was fantastic, but the director talks about pacing. In other words, they clarify they are definitely not going to take any of the horror from the original game, in fact they aim to make it even scarier, but with better pacing. In other words, they want there to be times you feel and are more powerful than the enemies you're facing thanks to some new gun, or a situation you get the leap on your foes. However, they also want situations where it feels you have to do the impossible, cornered, scared, confused and fighting to merely live. They also say they want to put more "epic" moments in the game, and jokingly talk about fighting bosses from the inside, surfing on top of a tram, and fighting a giant Sphincter. These could be real situations or they could be mere jokes, but whatever the case they are planning for some epic moments. However, they also set out to make a scary game, and they want you to know that. They are trying to make monster comings less predictable, but won't say much more than that except they all worked as a team to make many genuine scares in the game, many original scares, and not just something popping out and loud sounds playing. They also want to make missions a lot more intuitive and interesting and not just fetch quests. More puzzles are also going to be implemented, and figuring out what to do.

Oh man, this sounds great. It sounds like there's a good chance it won't be fucked up.

As they would have a budget set for the game, I'd rather they were devoting their entire budget to developing the single player game.  It's not that big a deal that I care to argue with you over it.

Halo Reach. UFC 2010 Undisputed. Tron. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. Electronic Art's Medal of Honor reboot.

That's only five of the games that will make their world premiere at the Spike 2009 Video Game Awards, which airs on Spike TV this Saturday. But according to GameTrailers TV host and VGA producer Geoff Keighley, we haven't seen anything yet. He promises "more than 12" exclusives, including all new footage of Ruffian's Crackdown 2, a new Star Wars title, and at least two games Spike can't even hint at.

"We definitely have some pretty major surprises still to come," he tells me. "Essentially, the biggest thing in the show hasn't even been announced yet."

Despite the busy VGA production schedule, Keighley took some time to chat with me about getting those big exclusives, what should (and shouldn't expect) from the show, and his personal pick for "Game of the Year."

While last year's VGAs ushered in "Gamer Heaven" -- complete with stunning, silver-painted female models wearing angel's wings -- Spike is taking 2009 in a new direction. The theme this year, Keighley tells me, is a virtual digital set that will evolve as the show progresses. The set you see when the show breaks for commercial won't be the one you see when it comes back, a quick environmental costume change, if you will.

"We're going to keep some of the environments secret," Keighley tells me, "but you'll definitely get to see that we'll be transforming a lot of worlds, even some games worlds, as well. We're working with some game publishers to actually create some of the very cool content."

When it comes to gamers, the coolest content will be the game exclusives. While Spike chose over a little over a dozen, there were plenty of exclusives -- pitched by the publishers themselves -- it had to choose from.

"Publishers really get excited about it," he explains. "I think what happened last year is that we had so many exclusives with God of War II and Uncharted 2, everyone who was in the show last year had an incredible experience and wanted to come back."

Those left out, he tells me, were clamoring to be involved, coming in really early to find out how to get involved. The fact that the VGAs will air in some form across 180 countries didn't hurt matters either; a worldwide footprint like that is a dream come true for publishers in terms of promotion.

In fact, Keighley said they had "north of about about 40 games" offered for the show, but had to make the difficult decision to pick and choose the best fits for the VGA audience. It's balancing act, he says, between offering up content for the hardcore gamers, while still  appealing to Spike's more mainstream demographic.

"You know, I think we do a pretty good job that will get the hardcore excited, but we also have to look at the broader more mainstream audience," he says. "Because if I booked ten Japanese RPGs on the show, that might be great for some of the real hardcore guys, but that's not what's going to appeal to the mainstream crowd."

The perfect example of this balance is the first-look world premiere of Bungie's Halo Reach. The Halo franchise has garnered acclaim from traditional hardcore gamers and a mainstream audience alike. In 2008, Microsoft touted Halo 3 as having the biggest launch day in entertainment history, pulling in a whopping $170 million in sales in its first 24 hours of release. The appeal of Bungie's next Halo project is undeniable, and according to Keighley, the Halo Reach reveal at the Spike VGAs is set to blow people away.

Clocking in at two minutes and thirty seconds, it's "basically the opening of the game," and will give gamers the first look at the Halo Reach engine running in real-time. You'll meet the game's characters for the first time, complete with dialogue, all backed by an original score by Bungie's musical daddy, Marty O'Donnell.

"It's been a couple of years since we've seen new technology from Bungie," he explains. "As soon as you see Reach, you'll realize that these guys have definitely upped the ante when it comes to visual firepower of the engine."

As for the other premieres, Keighely is keeping them close to his chest, saying they couldn't even "pre-promote them because no one knows they exist yet." Spike has even teased two "mystery games," which the Internet quickly speculated were a 2K Games' Spec Ops reboot, and a potential open-world Activision-published title called Black Lotus. He won't reveal if any of these guesses are on the money or completely off-base.

"There's been a lot of speculation online," he admits, being careful not to say too much. "I think people have been speculating in the wrong way sometimes, as well."

One reveal you won't be seeing, as some have guessed, is the recently announced Dead Space 2. Keighley quickly put his foot down on that one saying "it's not at the show and wasn't planned to be at the show." Don't expect to see anything from Microsoft on Project Natal, or even Sony's motion controller, codenamed "Gem," either.

But what of other quiet Internet chatter that perhaps Epic would be revealed Gears of War 3?

"What I can say on that," he says after some hesitation. "There are some I can't confirm or deny. What I can say is that I think some people saw our original publisher list and were speculating what games could be a part of that."

What you will see, as with previous shows, are plenty of celebrity appearances. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal will be on hand to introduce an exclusive clip from the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time film, for instance. Snoop Dogg and The Bravery will perform. Keighley also mentions that Year One's Olivia Wilde and Heroes' "Sylar," Zachary Quinto, are also scheduled to attend.

"One thing you'll see is that the vast majority of the people in the show celebrity-wise have a tie to the gaming world," he explains. "I'm not going to say that every person on the show is going to be a hardcore gamer. There will be some exceptions, and there will be some fun things. Like Mike Tyson will be there, because he was in Fight Night Round 4. We'll have a couple of tips of the hat for those entertainment junkies."

The tie between Hollywood and gaming doesn't get more obvious than with Tron Legacy, which hits theaters next year; the film's game tie-in will makes it premiere at the VGAs. Keighley says that Spike has been working closely with the film's director, Joseph Kosinski, to premiere the game big at the awards show.

Tron Legacy is Kosinski's first feature film, but he's no stranger to gaming -- he directed a commercial spot for Halo 3, as well as the now-legendary "Mad World" commercial to promote Gears of War. Keighley calls the Tron game reveal a "killer piece of content," which will feature exclusive new music from Daft Punk, with original visuals and footage created by Hollywood special effects juggernaut Digital Domain.

Hollywood connections aside, you can expect a ton of folks from the game industry to make appearances as well. Epic's Cliff Bleszinski has already picked out his outfit. Infinity Ward's Vince Zampella and Jason Ward will be on hand to look on as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is nominated for a handful of awards. Harmonix's Alex Rigopulos, Randy Pitchford from Gearbox, Double Fine's Tim Schafer, the Naughty Dog crew... the list goes on. In short, the VGAs won't be short of videogame "celebrity," that's for sure.

With all of the exclusives, glitz, and glamor, it's easy to forget about the reason why the show exists -- the awards. There are over two dozen categories, with games hand-selected by a panel of industry professionals selected by Spike. [Full disclosure: I participated as part of this year's VGA Judges panel.] Keighley says he wasn't surprised by the final game choices, especially for Game of the Year -- Assassin's Creed 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Left 4 Dead 2.

"I think it's hard to argue that anything else deserved to be in there," he says, before admitting he was surprised by one game that didn't get any nominations -- Capcom's Resident Evil 5.

"I think that's a game that came out so early in the year that people kind of forgot about it. It certainly wasn't a '95' rated game, but I thought that it might get some nominations."

As for his own Game of the Year pick, he wouldn't commit to one, but throws out that two of his favorite games of 2009 were Uncharted 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum. He admits it may seem like a bit of a cop out, Uncharted 2 being an obvious choice, but praises the "pure cinematic mastery" that Naughty Dog brought with the title. But it does sound like he's got a soft spot for Rocksteady's take on the Dark Knight.

"Everyone knew Assassin's Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 were going to be great games," he tells me,"and they were. But Batman sort of came out of nowhere, from an unknown studio and sort of surprised us. So I think I have a certain place in my heart for the game."

We'll find out which game takes home the statue tomorrow, December 12, when Spike TV airs the 7th Annual "Video Game Awards 2009" at 8:00 PM Eastern.

New Crackdown footage? I'm in.

"Biggest thing of the show hasn't been announced yet."  :lol What will be bigger than Reach? GTA5? CoD7? I don't think those will be there.

I don't care for the franchise, but what can be bigger than Halo Reach? Gears 3? That new MGS game with Raiden as the lead? ???

I doubt Nintendo will show anything, but if they do then Zelda Wii is the best they got.

Medal of Honor was the best/funniest thing shown because it was Call of Duty 4 to a T.  Not even Modern Warfare 2.  The night vision, the aerial attack via cap, even the presentation of the trailer was all CoD4.  The gameplay could be better, like, there could be AI and engaging firefights, but it's still amazing how much it is CoD4 based on that trailer.

You're being trolled, dude. Besides, Medal of Honor is hardly an indie franchise. I am starting to get increasingly irritated with the limited memory of gamers, though. IW makes good, addictive games, but the MW games are hardly trailblazers for current-era war games. Hell, the air support bits there looked like straight up Battlefield.

Ah, the environments look better for sure.  The special effects in the sky looked crazy, Bungie has good art direction.
Character models looked about the same as ODST, which is to say very good with helmets on, poor without.

What I'm not happy about is we still don't know what genre of game this is.  Is it an MMOFPS, is it like MAG, is it a 4p coop story campaign like Halo 3?  I'd like to know wtf Reach actually is.

I'm talking about the irritating amount of "Medal of Warfare" and "rip-off total" shit elsewhere. Popularity is one thing, but when popularity ends up clouding the history of things, it gets to be irritating. Smart move of IW nabbing "modern warfare," I bet Ubi wishes that it picked that instead of "advanced warfighter."

Meh. I think you are being over-sensitive to that. People will judge the game based on the end product. Until then they will snipe at it like every other game gets sniped at by people including all the pre-release sniping that occured towards Modern Warfare.

All that matters in the end is reviews and sales and what an indivdual thinks about an individual game. That last thing matters the most anyway.

Just saying, it gets on my nerves, especially when it all seems based on a common era. On the other hand, I'm hoping that this focus on explosive skirmishes in present day will push Ubi in the other direction, back towards the GR legacy style. But that is just wishful thinking.

I think you are being over-sensitive

And this from the dude that went into a sales and reviews argument with manabyte. smh.

Just saying, it gets on my nerves, especially when it all seems based on a common era. On the other hand, I'm hoping that this focus on explosive skirmishes in present day will push Ubi in the other direction, back towards the GR legacy style. But that is just wishful thinking.

My point is more that the people who say things like that weren't going to buy it anyway. Because they have pre-made up their minds. As far as old school Ghost Recon, that's probably a really bad idea if they want actual big sales to compete with the other top shooters imo.

Just saying. But obviously that is their call.

There wasnt even a Best Wii category. I think the only Wii game mentioned was Wii Sports Resort. Yeah... ok.

New Super Mario Brothers won best Wii game.

Ah, the environments look better for sure.  The special effects in the sky looked crazy, Bungie has good art direction.

I wouldn't go that far, not when talking about the company behind space rhinorillas and sometimes fisher-price looking guns and vehicles. What Bungie does well, probably better than any other company, is scale. Things are big, and they look even bigger. They are also good at valleys, and natural environments in general, and here you get a big fucking valley. I guess they may be able to mostly avoid indoor locations with this one? That would work in their favor.

As far as old school Ghost Recon, that's probably a really bad idea if they want actual big sales to compete with the other top shooters imo.

I'm not sure about that. A slower, proper recon game wouldn't get to enjoy a slice of the military action movie game pie, but that marketing is getting crowded. A well know, popular franchise doing its own thing doesn't sound like a completely bad idea.

For what its worth as I've said I hope Medal of Honor is good. I pretty much play all of the top shooters at least a bit so I always hope for more good ones. I haven't liked the direction of Medal of Honor for quite awhile so I'm skeptical about this one but this is a Treyarch year and I generally pass on their games and wait for the IW version so it's much more likely that I personally will pick up Medal of Honor this fall rather than the Treyarch COD game. (Although I'll admit if it is a Vietnam game like its been rumoured, I'm kinda curious to see that as I've wanted a Vietnam game from anybody for awhile)

The only thing about MOH that I'm skeptical about is whether or not DICE can make the multiplayer different enough from Battlefield to stand on its own, so to speak. But then on the other hand, the worst case scenario is that you get Operation Anaconda SP with BF MP, so that's hardly a god awful situation.

Just saw the Crackdown 2 trailer.  Definitely best trailer of the bunch.  Looks fun!  The super coop + flying seems like good additions.

The gliding and the zombie stuff gave it a brief but unpleasant scent of Prototype, but I'm sure they know better than to borrow anything from that piece of shit game.

With all the zombies and mutants in Crackdown 2, I hope it has some massive Shadow of the Colossus style boss battles. Going around and killing weak mob leaders in the first game was lame as hell. Platforming on top of some giant mutant would be awesome. :drool

I thought that too, and the zombie thing doesn't look too hot.  But gliding was maybe the only thing I liked about Prototype, even though they made the controls unnecessarily convoluted.

The character was clearly modeled after Jake Gyllenhaal from the movie. In fact, I'm betting the only reason they aren't calling it Prince of Persia: Sands of Time: The Movie: The Game is because they already have a game called Sands of Time. Hence the lame "Forgotten Sands" logo to try to tie-in into the movie vainly.

Basically, all that shitty cg trailer did was convince me that the game is just a shitty movie tie-in like we all assumed :/

Wait, DICE is doing MoH?  How big are they?  They're doing MoH, Battlefield 3 and ME2?

It's weird how they do these war games and then they do awesome non-war games (RSC2, ME).  Usually a studio just specializes at one type of game.

My only concern about Batman and the announcement is that hopefully Batman isn't a 2010 release. A good sequel like that needs a 2 year dev cycle. It's a bit odd to make the announcement so early though for a 2011 game, so that is a bit worrying.

The funny thing is that the team who made the definitive (arguably) MoH game, Allied Assault on PC, went on to form Infinity Ward and the CoD series.  It's not so different from the Rock Band / Guitar Hero thing.  At the same time, people are bashing this new MoH for making the jump from WW2 to modern thinking that CoD invented that transition when DICE, who is making the multiplayer part, had a similar jump with BF1942 to BF2 (and Vietnam in the middle).  In conclusion, people are dumb.

and that Halo Reach trailer, I don't understand what there is to get excited about from it.  They showed off that the game is slightly closer to the visual standard of today, they made human faces not hideous and now use mo-cap for the 'in-engine but pre-recorded' cutscenes (which is a lame trend if only because they claim it's real time; KZ2 did this).  So, we know it managed to improve on a game from 2007, yay?  I wish they showed off gameplay or anything.  Between the trailer introduction and the trailer only containing dialogue (and the Halo anime) I'm still shocked that this is apparently a selling point for the series.  The only cool thing shown was that Elites are back, which is great since Brutes are smelly.

Can't wait for the beta, though.  I just hope they use the FOV from ODST instead of Halo 3.  Going from ODST campaign and firefight to Halo 3 multiplayer, it was really noticeable.  Not that I wouldn't play it regardless.

They're fun games.  In single player each battle has a lot of variety.  AI is pretty good.

From most important:

1) Sci-fi FPS in an ocean of shitty MODERN IRAQ WAR FPSes (hello new Medal of Honor!)
2) Great story
3) Challenge (Legendary mode). No Sniper Town distinguished mentally-challenged like in CoD games. Also no infinity respawns.
4) Xbox exclusivity
5) Humour
6) Soundtrack

Eh, that list isn't so far off.

Halo is great because the battles always intense & interesting, the guns feel great, it's sci-fi and not some generic war shooter, it's well written with humour and tact like a pixar film (I don't even understand how Halo games get M ratings, I guess cause in MP you shoot other humans?) instead of being full of cursing and violence and tits, it has excellent art & music, and yeah it doesn't have the stupid shit that bogs down other fps like infinite respawning enemies or grenade spam or sniper spam etc... It also has the most fun vehicles in any FPS.

Oh and I think a few people play it multiplayer.
Title: Re: VGA Game Premieres
Post by: Stoney Mason on December 13, 2009, 05:15:39 PM
Halo is popular because:

A.) It has a legacy on the Xbox consoles and satisfies fans of the series.
B.) It still controls well as a console fps compared to most series (Hint this is also a large reason why COD is popular)
C.) The single player campaign while it does nothing really for me is liked by quite a number of people due to the AI and the story elements.
D.) Bungie takes the MP part seriously and services their community well.

Its not a grand mystery. Whether you personally like Halo or not, its not too hard to figure out why its a popular series.

As far as Reach, it will come down to the MP on whether I buy. ODST was a bit of scam imo but Reach seems like a legit game from all the info we have and the time spent on the development side. I'm bit tired of traditional Halo MP so I hope they re-work a lot of that stuff and do a lot of the class based stuff that has been rumoured.

Halo games are really good entertainment, and that's fairly consistent. The story has been super-crappy and really intrusive since Halo 2, and there's been way too much location hopping as of late, but it's always fun causing chain reactions of grenades and beating up grunts. The magneto-aim and barn size reticles seem a bit silly at first, but it keeps you winning, so hey. I don't know if it's an illusion or not, but the enemies also seem a bit more adept at higher difficulties.

I'm not really the best person to speak towards the single player. I generally find the single player in Halo games immensely boring and repetitive and the story absolutely impossible to follow.

But then that is just a my taste kind of thing. I prefer a campaign like Gears of War where its more about fun and being on a roller coaster ride. I had more fun playing Modern Warfare 2 campaign than I do Halo campaigns. I can obviously see why somebody would have the complete opposite view however.

Like a lot of people I fell in love with Halo 2 MP and that carried over to 3 for awhile but at this point like I said, I'm ready for a change. Other fps MP games have evolved to where I prefer them so hopefully Reach also evolves quite a bit.

Is it my imagination, or did DJ Hero win the VGA for Best Soundtrack -- over not only 100+ epic metal tracks in Brutal Legend, but also The Beatles Rock Band?

That's pretty funny, you should do one with a 360 and that girl having sex, and when they're done, make her all nervous because the condom broke, the condom being the 360 getting red ringed.

That ps3 one wasn't very funny at all.

Prince of Persia is so dissapointing. The last one was great. They didn't need to remake Sands of Time.

Pretty much. It's a fun game, and one of the few console FPS games that features the tight controls I like. I've only played bits and pieces of the single player so I can't comment on it, but the multiplayer is amazing

Halo multiplayer is still the best console FPS out there.  I never bothered with the campaigns in Halo 1 or 2, nor did I ever care to.  Multi was always where it was at.  The game was so popular that it was easy to get 12-16 player LAN games going before Halo 2 took it online.

I miss those days.  It was more fun being with a bunch of friends in the same room(s) versus playing online.

Definitely. Some friends and I still get together and do system link with two TVs and two OG Xboxes and do 8-player rocket ball in Halo 2.

I am not sure if God of War 3 is a system seller, but if anything is, it's that.

I am not sure if God of War 3 is a system seller, but if anything is, it's that.

I've been saying it for two E3s now, God of War 3 and GT5 are the only two games with potential to sell big.  Well, at least in Western places.  Final Fantasy XIII is probably going to be in Japan along with Versus XIII, and depending on how popular that brand still in (and if Versus XIII remains exclusive) it might do fine here.  There is also the Agent game from Rockstar, which probably won't be relevant when it comes out in 2011 or something.  This is without factoring in the almost assured failure of the saggle diddle stick and whatever minor support sony give sit.
