Wi isn't surprising. I didn't do a ton of shopping in stores for the holidays, but the few times I did go to some store, you could always see some grandparents lug around Wii boxes. I imagine there are a lot of disappointed grandkids out there. Found out during the family get together with the wife's family that just about all of them had gotten a Wii, and just about all the kids were disappointed that it wasn't a PS3 or 360.  :'(

PS3 crushing the 360 is more surprising. I'm sure software sales do not show this in the slightest.

I dunno.  Like, turning a gif into a video takes about 2 seconds (actually, I'm pretty sure I made the gif the guy edited) but going in and editing each frame seems like it would take a while.  I can't imagine a lot of people doing that and assume there is a simpler way, like a program that overlays frames and makes it simple.

To borrow an overused sports phrase, the Wii is what it is. 3.8 million is ridiculously impressive, but we know it matters little in terms of impacting software that matters to most typical gamers. So, yeah, good job, Nintendo. Now get off my lawn.

I don't see how anyone at Microsoft or Sony could be disappointed in their own numbers. On the Microsoft side, it's a system in its fifth holiday season that has seen very little in terms of price reduction over its lifetime and really nothing to speak of in the past year outside of a SKU shuffle. 1.3 million? They'll take it. And for Sony, they're finally putting that dern thing in homes at a decent clip. No, it will never track down the 360 in America overall, but I don't see why it won't continue to go neck and neck with the 360 from here on. It still has a bit of brand power to help it overcome relative library weakness. Anecdotal ahoy, but I'm reminded of the PSN giftcard I received from my brother and his wife at Christmas. Apparently, the conversation they had on their end was something like this: "Does he have a Playstation or a Nintendo? ... I don't know, I think the Playstation? ... OK, let's get him this giftcard." I have neither.

So anyway... good grades all around. That's my opinion, at least.

That would be sage wisdom and good advice if it were true that Wii sales had any real negative impact on HD-console software. From my perspective, it doesn't appear to have changed a thing. Nintendo's making money hand-over-first, to be sure, but other developers? I don't think the butter for their bread has changed all that much.

I saw some Wii dudes suggesting that Ubi and the others are probably eating the words now, and I think those dudes just don't get it. Those games that they want on the Wii would be alien to the system and uninteresting to the new market. Ubi and others have seen great results on the 360 and PS3 despite the marketshare gap. The Wii isn't like the other systems.

Why are you people continually surprised that Nintendo is steamrolling the competition. It's been this way for FOUR YEARS. That's quite a lot of time to get adjusted to our Casual Overlords. Get with the program, chiefs.

They're surprised and angry that despite price drops, hardware revisions, and a virtually endless stream of expensive Hollywood games starring bald Marines, transexuals, and other shock/blockbuster characters, their manly-man video game consoles and manly-man games did very little in terms of catching up to the Big N.

This is great news for the industry and gamers alike, in my opinion. Of course, most of the Hollywood gamers here hate the news, claiming its the fault of grandmas or whatever, while playing off these numbers as meaningless, but who cares what they think? It seems the industry don't!

Nintendo did great but only their shit sold for Wii software.  We only have the Top 10 to go off of but the story is the same every month.  Nintendo games sell well, shitware third party titles do ok over time because the bar is set low for them, and good third party Wii titles are left behind.  Each and every month angsty Nintards scratch their heads wondering why Resident Evil 5 didn't get a Wii version.

The PS3 didn't steamroll 360, that is pretty lolworthy.  It was by 50,000 and even then, the 360 versions of games last month outsold the PS3 iterations on the top of the charts.  Hardware might be more evened out but the 360 is still trouncing the PS3 in software.  I could see things level out over time but it isn't anywhere near now and Microsoft hardly has anything to worry about.  So sry :(

I'm finding myself less and less interested in the CONSOLE WARZ because at this point, it is decided.  Not much will change except a couple months here and there where the 360 and PS3 might interchange between 2nd and 3rd for the month but other than that, it is it.  The new systems will be out probably in 2-3 years and there will be no miraculous turnaround, unless Sony collapses from all of the losses it is (still) taking from the PS3.

I still don't know why the NPD includes sales of novelty gifts (i.e. Wii) in their monthly figures. I thought this was for tracking video game sales ???

Pretty much everything is set now. Publishers (EA, Capcom, Sega, Ubisoft) have moved on from Nintendo to where games are sold. Better for us. Less dev time wasted on downporting and compromising titles to fit on the Wii.

Get with the program, ole chums. Nintendo is undergoing quite the renaissance and its a site to behold.

Two things you big-budget Hollywood gamers need to understand: one, the customer is always right. Two, numbers do not lie. In other words, the customers don't give enough of a shit about the HD consoles and there are numbers there to prove it.

If I were an anti-Nintendo mongrel like the rest of you crying losers, I wouldn't be bitching about these numbers as much as I'd be worried about how Nintendo's unparallel success will shape and affect next-gen.

Looks like that boycott worked, MW2 PC nowhere to be seen.
It charted on the PC-only charts, but in all honesty, you don't need a boycott when they already made it suck. (Kinda like a Leno boycott, as if anyone was 'giving up' Leno out of disgust)

What hurts more -- the Wii annihilating the competition from every conceivable angle, or the Wii destroying the single month sales record, formerly held by the PS2?

The Wii is making history; Nintendo is yet again poised to redefine the industry (if they haven't done so already), and records are once again yielding to the uncompromising push from the Big N's numerous diamond selling (i.e.,10 million plus) software titles.

Face it, whoresons, HD gaming is a mere afterthought.

Let me ask you bitches something:

What hurts more -- the Wii annihilating the competition from every conceivable angle, or the Wii destroying the single month sales record, formerly held by the PS2?

The Wii is making history; Nintendo is yet again poised to redefine the industry (if they haven't done so already), and records are once again yielding to the uncompromising push from the Big N's numerous diamond selling (i.e.,10 million plus) software titles.

Face it, whoresons, HD gaming is a mere afterthought.

Which hurts more: not getting a third as many significant third party releases as the 360/PS3, or the fact that Nintendo hardly churns out any games these days to make up for it?

Last time I checked, RE4 was on the Wii. Your argument has been annihilated

The best party games include Strip Twister, Beirut, Flip-Cup, Never Have I Ever and Asshole. Are those games on the Wii? Didn't think so. :greenshinobi

No one gives a shit if you think the Wii hasn't cornered certain "hardcore" markets. That irrelevant.

The modern day video game industry is about being a jack of all trades. The XBox 360 has first person and third person shooters locked, along with western RPGs, and what has it gotten it? A tentative second place spot this generation. The PS3 has all the hardcore leftovers. What good has that served Sony? Oh, third place in the U.S. And their shitty handheld has all those great PS2 games, what are the perks in that? That's right, a machine on life support.

More like a 7 of diamonds, kid. That's how many 10 million plus sellers they'll have at the end of this round IF they stop making new games.

This is an NPD thread, look at the numbers, drag your ass back down to reality, and shut up. I know it hurts, but that's life. Just accept the fact that Nintendo is your hobby's new daddy.

Sales of The Beatles: Rock Band game during the holidays turned out to be less than fab.

The costly music game sold 357,000 units in the U.S. in December, bringing its total since launching Sept. 9 of last year to 1.18 million, according to new data from the NPD Group.

Including foreign sales, The Beatles: Rock Band sold more than 1.7 million units worldwide.

Quote
Overall, sales of music video games plunged 46% to $1.06 billion last year, according to NPD. It was the largest decline of any genre, indicating that the once red-hot music gaming trend, which took off with the original Guitar Hero in 2005, is losing steam.

I was mostly joking, but Beatles Rock Band sold 3 million less than expected, and didn't come close to turning a profit.

who was expecting it to sell more than 4 million copies in less than four months in NA?

It still sold more than Guitar Hero 5, and the previous Guitar Hero installments outsold regular Rock Band games.

edit:
seems like Guitar Hero 5 was a much, much bigger bomb
Quote
Rock Band has done quite well for itself, and The Beatles Rock Band has been getting much of the buzz this holiday season. But EEDAR analyst Jessie Divnich still predicts that Guitar Hero 5 will outsell The Beatles Rock Band by more than 2:1.

According to Bloomberg, EEDAR is predicting "4 million-plus" units sold for Guitar Hero 5 and 1.7 million for The Beatles Rock Band.

That the genre ever got as big as it did in the first place was mostly a fluke. Based around the gimmick of playing with plastic instruments and tricking casuals to get involved into the whole mix and not think it was nerdy like they the view the rest of gaming.

You can't sell that shit every year to a new group of people at the same numbers. Eventually burn out sets in. All that happened was the market corrected itself. Music games will always represent a money-making genre. I just doubt they will be the monster they were at the high point.

WTF?  I don't understand how a Beatles fan could have gone this long without buying it.  It's HEAVENLY.  I hope they change the stance of album-only DLC though..I am sure that is hurting sales of it.

I am going to buy the bundle and then sell off my disc/GH instruments once it's down to like $120-$150 I think.  That is the main reason that the $$ comparison is a little unfair for the genre although obviously the bottom line is all that matters.

Pretty much. It reached its saturation point awhile ago. There will always be those who support the game, but buying the same game plus a few new songs a year isn't going to appeal to casual gamers. Making DLC more accessible should be the way to go. Do they sell song cards, for instance? I'm not too familiar with things, but I know game cards work pretty well for online games like WoW. Has anyone introduced similar cards for Rock Band/Guitar Hero, but they'd include new songs? Seems like a good idea, and just the thing that would fly off the shelves at Wal Mart
Title: Re: npd
Post by: archie4208 on January 17, 2010, 09:14:28 AM
The closest thing that you are talking about are MS points cards with GH and RB logos at retailers.  The largest problem was oversaturation.  If there was only one mainline GH and RB game with everything else being DLC, then music games would have suffered a gradual decline instead of dying overnight.

I suspected the developers/publishers knew this as well - which is why we got stuff like Guitar Hero Aerosmith and Lego Rock Band: they knew the gravy train would end and it was best to milk the popularity of all of its worth before the audience moved on to something else.

They specifically dropped Tony Hawk because they got sick of it. (Gun however they'd love to go back to.)

I don't feel bad for those guys.  I feel bad for the 30+ people within the company who got laid off because music games are flopping.

Dude, read between the lines on the layoffs. They just pushed out two huge games. You don't need that much QA after that. Throw in SEASONAL CONTRACT interns and maybe a few people you dislike, and that adds up to the amount canned. It was just a way to get rid of someone without making it look like he was getting fired.

While I see sales lower, I think that by having less titles, it can do a lot better.
I for one ONLY bought Guitar Hero 5. I got Lego Rock Band for FREE at Old Navy, Guitar Hero Van Halen for FREE with GH5 and I'm waiting for an inevitable price-drop on The Beatles. Still can't afford DJ Hero.

When you rush out that much shit all within 60 days of each other, you're going to cannibalize your own sales, no bones about it. The genre did find, but both companies need to focus on releasing less titles since it is obvious people only want to buy one a year, so releasing a half-dozen all at the same time hurts everyone. Oh, and the ridiculous cost of the Beatles bundle didn't help at all, either. Harmonix deserves every lost sale thinking that. (Same with Activision for their Renegade bundle)
