THE BORE

Emphasis on owned, not just random games you picked up and rented or downloaded, but stuff you actually spent money on only to discover that you had just bought a piece of crap.
1. Beyond the Beyond: The definition of "shit game." Unfun battles, uninteresting story, ridiculously high encounter rate. I can't believe they chose to translate this over the original Arc the Lad just 'cause it was 3D. Fucking Bernie Stolar. It's incomprehensible to me that this game was made by the same folks behind the Shining Force series.
2. The Granstream Saga: Pretty sure I bought this game when there was an RPG drought on the PSX. What a crap game. Character models had no faces so it looked like you were talking to fucking mannequins. You had a stupid talking parrot thing for a sidekick. About the only thing that made this notable is that it's the first video game I ever played that had nudity (animated FMV cut scene of some chick's ass). Played about three hours and never touched it again. I think it's one of the few games I've ever traded in (I like to collect shit so I very rarely get rid of games).
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Still has one of the best cover arts for a TMNT game ever, IMO. Unfortunately, the game itself is crap. Shitty platforming sections, lame enemies...the arcade games shit all over this.
4. Jaws: Another game I bought as an impressionable youngster because the cover art was awesome. Unfortunately the bulk of the game is spent shooting manta rays and collecting seashells from the ocean floor. Along with TMNT, they were two of my first NES games. It's a miracle I wasn't turned off on gaming forever.
5. SaGa Frontier: It's weird to put this one on my list since I'm actually a big fan of SaGa Frontier 2. But the first one is terrible, disjointed, disconnected, incomprehensible, and, the biggest sin of all - BORING. The battle system is crap because the way you gain skills and increase your stats seems completely randomized (as I remember), the way your character interacts with the CG backgrounds makes everything look incredibly fake, the game world seems like they took a bunch of random CGs from fantasy, horror, and contemporary settings and just pasted them all together, etc., etc., etc.

Star Wars: Episode One for the PS1.

Dragon Age

Sssssnake for the 2600. There were plenty of shitty games for the 2600 but I remember buying this in a clearence bin for 50 cents (seriously) and I still felt ripped off.

-
The dumbest moment in gaming.
-
that I myself bought:
I thought it was a good story and fun game at the time. I grew up since then.
the worst game that anybody has ever bought for me? probably this:
Of course I asked for it because it initially looked like that FUN NES simpson's game that I would play at my friend's house.
-
probably some stupid jap game gaf overhyped.
-
If you thought it was a fun game at the time, then it's definitely not one of the worst games you've ever owned, nintenho.
-
South Park for the N64 :fbm

Real List:
Still in the shrinkwrap. I will never open it and I don't know anyone dumb enough to buy it at a good price.
I actually borrowed this from a friend and we lost contact. Me and my cousins had some good laughs with this game. I sold it to Gamestop eventually.
-
Persona 3? Wow, you're lucky if that's one of the worst games you've ever owned...
-
If you thought it was a fun game at the time, then it's definitely not one of the worst games you've ever owned, nintenho.
the krusty game looked fun until the controller was in my hands. I was trying to be lenient on MGS:TTS because I just discovered gaming forums praising MGS and was trying to give it a fair chance.
-
Persona 3? Wow, you're lucky if that's one of the worst games you've ever owned...
You missed the part where I said "real list". You took my Himu bait. :lol
-
I totally missed that part. :lol
I did play Bloodrayne. What complete crap...I can't believe they actually made a movie adaptation out of it!
-
About two thirds of my Playstation library is downright shameful, but this takes the cake for unplayability:
:-\

I played the demo of that game!

Want an unopened copy for collectors purposes? :lol

Give it to me Beezy.

I think the developer/studio that made it is now bankrupt.
-
About the only thing that made this notable is that it's the first video game I ever played that had nudity (animated FMV cut scene of some chick's ass).
That's the only thing I can remember about this game. :lol
My dad was watching me while that cutscene came up. He got kind of mad. :-\
-
Pretty much the only interesting thing about the game, I think. :lol
Well, that and at the end you had to choose which of the female characters lived or died.

its shit

Give it to me Beezy.
Sorry, I wasn't giving it away. :(
-
The battle system is crap because the way you gain skills and increase your stats seems completely randomized (as I remember)
It's based on what you do in battle. But more to the point, how could you hate this and like Saga Frontier 2 when they both use more or less the same progression system?
-
*Orta*
its shit

Enchanted Arms for PS3. Bought it for $60 and returned it a month later for $3 credit toward another game. :yuck

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a big one for me.

SGF2 rox. SGF1 sux. That's why.

God this game sucked. I remember EGM giving it a 10, and I bought it on day one. what the fuck.

Beezy I just hooked you up with over 3 years of Live. I dont get a free shit game?
Not this one. I'm willing to giveaway my weeaboo version of Jump Superstars though. It's only missing the manuals.
Did that game ever come out over here btw?
Edit: It's actually Jump Ultimate Stars. I don't remember where I got the case for the older game. :lol

I loved the genesis game but hated the hell outta the Xbox version.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/bzchanboy/dbecc4a86aa2bc7f38ab92dfe86185bf-De.jpg?t=1268621071g)Bought this back when gamestop had its 7 day "rental" returns, got it home looked at it and noticed I had more fun with virtual tennis... Ended up going back and getting panzor dragoon orta which was returned as well for Bloodwake...
FUCK THIS GAME! I couldn't play this game for the life of me. It was just shit.
I thought It was the poor man's syphon filter but it ended up just being crap.
Brought out towards the end of the dreamcasts life and the fact that I had a PS2 before buying one I was all hyped for online console gaming. This shit didnt even work 10% of the time. Thankfully gamestop had its return policy, oh how I miss it.
as for this one I got it as a gift, no one thought to find me a damn dreamcast gun... being that I was in hickville at the time none of the stores had them and so I never got to play this game till I played the arcade version disappointment...
and a crap more that I'm glad I either don't own or have forgotten I own.
-
(http://www.chrisgreensted.co.uk/bloodrayne.jpg)
I actually borrowed this from a friend and we lost contact. Me and my cousins had some good laughs with this game. I sold it to Gamestop eventually.
I got this on the Game Cube over the other versions back when I was briefly a Cube whore. It sucked on GC, but was okay on Xbox and PC. This was back when it was easy to return stuff to Gamestop, so I'd "rent" games like this one all time. The sequel was a big improvement.
God this game sucked. I remember EGM giving it a 10, and I bought it on day one. what the fuck.
Yeah, I bought this because of the GAF hype train and EGM review. So fucking boring.
-

Awesome game. :bow2
-
I think the worse game that I can remember paying real money for (not counting when I ironically bought Superman 64 for $5, or all those SegaCD games I got at a flea market) was the REAL ULTIMATE JAPAFAG EDITION of Growlanser Generations.
Only $90, and you get a keychain, a watch, a CD soundtrack, a map, some other bullshit, and then two games that look like they were rejected SNES titles. Shocking surprise that Working Designs went out of business.
-
Wow, did Bz really list Goemon? You fat piece of shit. Dont come back.
-
Otogi, Fable 2, and pretty much anything I've ever played from Ubisoft.
-
Oh yeah, also Fable. :yuck
-
Wtf, Goemon was great.
-

I thought Growlanser II was mediocre, but Grow III was great.
-

I liked Fable too. :(
Man, I might have horrible taste.
-
Bad Company 2.
jk. Kind of.
Probably Bart vs the Aliens or whatever that NES Simpson's game was
-
Probably Metal Gear Solid 2. Or ICO. Whichever.
-
E.T.
Journey Escape
Towers of Darkness
Ultima NES
Top Gun (NES)
Dragon's Lair (C64)
lol I'm old
After 1989, I rented everything. Or I would buy it .. beat it in a week and return it for full price (back when you could do something like that).

So bad its unplayable
-----------------------------
(http://i40.tinypic.com/1118oko.jpg)
And this was just awful. Ruined RPGs for me for a good 6 years
-
some billiards game for the genesis
it was wretched, and i couldn't even do the double return at toys r us and get my money back because they had started opening the games at the service when you did returns
and realsports football for the atari 5200, what a goddamned hunk of shit that was
-
I own things like Superman 64 and ET on the 2600 but they're kinda popularly bad I guess. I didn't exactly have expectations for them.
In the past couple years, I'd say maybe Prototype or SOCOM Confrontation. Don't know why I haven't sold them yet. There are a lot of games I own that I wish I just rented, like Brutal Legend.
-
I owned Knight Rider, Werewolf and Beetlejuice for the NES.
I wasn't too wise in game selections as a kid. I should have let my friends pick out the games. The best choice I ever made back then was Arch Rivals.
-
When I bought my Duo from ebay, this was one of the games I got with it (along with R-Type, Ys Book 1 and 2, the Gate of Thunder/Bonk 1/Bonk 2 disk, all of which are amazing games):
Graphic style is very original, it uses lots of bright colors - the art is well-done, slightly offputting and maybe a tad macabre. Best thing about the game though... the rest of the game is extremely broken, it's entirely possible to get totally stuck and have to reset the game. This is first apparent if you head to the right (like you would do in all sidescrollers) instead of going left and jumping in a well.
Some other games I bought but hated:
-Legend of Mana (I wanted to like this game, it looked and sounded absolutely beautiful for instance, but the total lack of challenge and the sloppy/confusing story didn't help matters... plus the crafting system and 'world building' system was not well done at all)
-Gears of War (Bought when I got my 360, I couldn't stand this game)
-Xenosaga (soooooo slooooooooooow, cinemas dragged on forever, awful characters, battle system moved like molasses. 35 hour game that felt like 90 hours)
-Bugs Bunny Rabbit Rampage (there are much worse games out there, I just picked to buy this game over the incredible Shinobi 3 when I was younger, so I have a bit of extra hate for this)
-Eternal Sonata (looks beautiful, but everything else about this game was the pits. Worst big-name RPG of this gen so far)
-
mmm... i bought this second hand for some euro before ffx got ever released
(http://imageboard4free.com/uploads/data/ror_ib4f.jpg)
to be fair it wasn't that bad but i guess it's the best i can come with it
otherwise someone gave me this for free,i guess that doesn't make it count?
it was badbadbadbadbadbadbad but it should be no surprise considering it's a kawazu game
-
Ring of Red wasn't THAT bad, but since you couldn't save mid-game and the matches took FOREVER, it was a serious fucking chore to play. I don't know anyone who didn't play more than a few rounds at most before calling it quits for good.
As I was driving to work this morning, I remembered that owned Where's Waldo? for NES for a short period of time:
:derp :derp :derp :derp
-
Probably the worst game I've ever owned was either Superman 64 [although it was unintentionally hilarious for a few minutes] and this football game on the Sega CD that was showed you come FMV cutscene after you picked a play.
-
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZG15325EL._SS400_.gif)
THIS. Good lord. THIS!! Talk about crap!! This game was unplayable. The backgrounds are all pre-rendered, terribly I might add. It all blurs together into one big diahrrea looking mess. The controls make Resident Evil's tank controls look precise and perfect.
This is hands down Acclaim at their worst. I can usually find something redeeming about a game but this crap has none.
-
I just finished TMNT the 360 game. So crappy. How crappy? The whole game can be more or less slept through, including a couple mindless boss encounters. But the end of the game requires some insane, timed platforming, and then culminates in a multi-stage, start from the beginning if you die multi-boss battle with single-hit knockback/fall to death gameplay AND a mechanic that they only mentioned once, halfway through the game. :maf
Oh, Guitar Hero III. Not a bad game, but the worst, most stingy Achievements of any game I own. I've played the hell out of it, and still only have less than 300 in it.
Crazy Taxi Double Punch (PSP). This would probably be a good game if the controls could be remapped. I can never get used to controlling something which has different controls than every other driving game on the PSP.
I've got a feeling Warhammer Battle March is going to end up on this list if I ever open it
-
and this football game on the Sega CD that was showed you come FMV cutscene after you picked a play.
lol i think i know what you're talking about. There were only two teams, and after you picked your play you'd watch the outcome in one of a handful of grainy-ass fmv. and that was the entire game. so glad i only rented that one.
anyway:
bought it based on the cover art; man was i happy to find out that the game moved slow as fuck and had NO MID-MISSION CHECKPOINTS EVEN AT THE BOSSFIGHTS
(http://i42.tinypic.com/2h3vu9z.jpg)
YAY i'm having so much fun protecting the poor dumb little girl by mashing on square over and over and over and over..
what the fuck is even going on in this game? i don't know but at least you can get laid
(http://i44.tinypic.com/2q062d5.jpg)
FUCK YOU MAF :maf

drill dozer was so mind numbing boring,it even had it's own brand of high-tone squeaky pokemon music! i can't believe this game has fan...

Minesweeper on XBLA is by far the dumbest purchase I've made in recent times. Don't know what I was thinking.
Airwolf was the first game I bought for my NES, because it had a cool helicopter on the cover. I learned that lesson the hard way. :'(
(http://i40.tinypic.com/107qm1w.jpg)
The only game I ever sold. Fuck you Turok 2.
-
My brother owned Airwolf because he was a fan of the TV show. What a horrible, horrible game.
-
Just thought of another one. Carmageddon 64. I swear the frame rate in that game hovers around 5-8 fps. A children's flip book is smoother than that game. Yes I own a lot of bad games :-\

I decided to troll sega fans instead

This made me reconsider all future collector's editions. Such a giant pissbucket of cum. Waste of an extra $10 plus the framerate was Jet-Force-Gemini level.
-
Minesweeper on XBLA is by far the dumbest purchase I've made in recent times. Don't know what I was thinking.

Why the fuck would anyone buy Minesweeper? Doesn't it still come with Windows?
-

The only game I ever sold. Fuck you Turok 2.
I didn't think Turok 2 was all that bad. The only thing I remember really hating about it (framerate and fog aside because that was pretty par for the course at the time) were the enormous gaps between save points. I think they were occasionally well over an hour apart.
-

Special Edition Minesweeper. Comes with an actual mine.

oh man i totally blanked out the fact i once owned turok evolution

My thought was that I wanted to play it from the comfort of my couch. I am still totally perplexed as to why I thought it was a good idea because the game sucks horribly with a controller, a fact I somehow missed while trying the demo. Everyone berate me, for wasting my money is not punishment enough for such phenomenal stupidity. :'(

I think it was OK and far from the worst game ever, but it must have made a special impression on me. I think it was the huge distance between savepoints, as I realised I'd never have the time to play it.
My brother owned Airwolf because he was a fan of the TV show. What a horrible, horrible game.
That's such a tragic story. :(

Actually, it wasn't horrible, once you knew what to look for. I could easily beat the game with plenty of time to spare once I was in the zone. The only hard part is the subway tile puzzle. Ending sucks, by the way.
-
I always wonder why this game doesn't get mentioned in threads like this, but then that's probably because most people had the good sense to avoid it.

HALO 2
I never got that far - I regretted my Halo 1 purchase too much. :(

it was a trash game, but it tried something different. it didn't really trick you into anything either. when you played it, you got exactly what you knew you'd get. for better or for worse.
I have fond memories of that game, because it had a dual use of placating people who happened to be way too messed up in the bad way at my house. probably because it was boring and kind of shitty, but hey.
-
I bought Mach Rider at the same time as Excitebike because I saw that they were "programmable" and you could make your own tracks. :o Of course, Excitebike is amazing, but Mach Rider is fucking awful.

Yeah, I guess Tail of the Sun was at least...interesting. I actually remember kinda liking it back then, but I think that was just because (aside from the fact that I was 9) it was the first legit open world game I played in 3D. Still, when I tried to play it a few years later I wanted to break the disc in half and use the pieces for seppuku

Loved it. :elephant
I positively obsessed over that game.

It actually really is when you take into account that he was like 8 years old and that was the only thing our parents gave him for his birthday. :lol

Knight Rider, Airwolf, Mach Riders. It's like you people are trying to make me feel bad about enjoying these games when I was younger.

Sorry for bumping this but it suddenly dawned on me what magazine was responsible for this. Actually, after a quick search, I managed to find the offending cover itself:

Goddammit Halverson
-
I bet he was high when he played that game too.
-
"Exclusive interview with Bruce Campbell!"
:omg
-
fuck gamefan. a friend of mine collects old issues and jesus christ those guys were fucking lame. EVERY game got great ratings unless it was a less-than-perfect arcade port, or later on, 3D games after it became cool to hate on them and pine for the old days. They gave Bubsy 3D super high scores ffs. shit mag
-
When I bought a ps3 I got some random-ass NBA game with it. So I went to Gamestop and said that I'd gotten it for my birfday and that I wanted to trade it so I got MGS4 for free :pimp
But then MGS4 was so violently shitty I felt like I lost out :duh
MGS4, retroactively making the entire franchise, and most of Konami's catalog, shitty.
-
I liked Quest 64.
-
I liked Quest 64.
I sort of liked it when it first came out, but even I knew back then that it wasn't even close to being as good as Ocarina of Time.

archie, play the Game Boy color version. Cum buckets

I remember when the N64 came out and everyone was like "Oh man Mario 64 is so amazing, the hardware is unbelievable, nobody could ever make a bad game with this hardware"

I bought a ton of shit when stores were liquidating their Dreamcast stock. Hanging around on the DC forums like Blast City, a lot of shit games got hyped to hell and with these supposed unappreciated gems going for $5 or less, I got a lot of shit like Elemental Gimmick Gear, TrickStyle, and others.
The worst one I played from the bunch was Seventh Cross: Evolution, a game I bought from $1.99 and was panned by even the most hyperbolic Segatards. I expected shit and shit is what I got:

I continued to buy a lot of hyped shitware after the Dreamcast until I stopped listening to GAF.
