At the start of this gen, I was a GAF member and I hated this gen. Then I came to EvilBore, now I love this gen.

Video games are so fucking good now it's amazing. Endless amounts of awesome video games.

I hope this gen doesn't end for at least two more years. There's still so much left to unlock as far as the hardware in these consoles.

This is shaping up to be a banner year for someone of my gaming interests. I'd argue that already there has been more good games than the whole of '09.

Fall 2012 is the earliest we will see new consoles. And even then all 3 guys will still support the current gen consoles at least a little bit longer unlike last gen where Xbox just ditched the OG system to move on.

I completely disagree that today's console hardware are good enough for a couple more years.  On the console front, we're still a long ways off from the holy grail of 60 fps gaming.  Console companies have promised 60fps gaming since the N64 days yet so far, they've failed to deliver.
Title: Re: So why is gaming so damn good?
Post by: Stoney Mason on April 21, 2010, 02:57:41 PM
Most console gamers are fine with 30 fps and while I personally also strongly prefer 60 fps, that's not gonna stop this gen from being extended. All three companies have large and multiple reasons to want to extend this gen as long as possible to recoup costs.

And there is no outcrying from the masses for the next gen to start yet. Most "regular" people are still fine with what their hardware is delivering.

I don't know about always.  The PS1, Saturn and N64 era was mostly painful.
Title: Re: So why is gaming so damn good?
Post by: demi on April 21, 2010, 03:10:47 PM
Well what did you play? I would agree with Saturn and N64... but PS1 had it all.
Title: Re: So why is gaming so damn good?
Post by: Smooth Groove on April 21, 2010, 03:16:45 PM
PC obviously.  You could even run big name N64 titles on a 3DFX rig with 60fps and much higher resolutions.

I just couldn't get into PS1 games because the framerates were terrible and loading took forever.  I remember my cousin calling me to go over because he was all hyped about Gran Turismo.  I was like WTF, you asked me to come over for this?  Crap was like a slideshow although I admit that the presentation was impressive for its time.

Dreamcast was when I became interested in consoles again.

I wasnt specifically talking about Consoles only... my point is gaming is and always will be good. If you just now think it is, you obviously had a rough spot in your life at that time that was completely unrelated to gaming. No job, no girlfriend (LOL), dead mom...

I've always liked games. The only time I wanted to quit gaming was after last gen, but when I got a 360 the first time I around I got involved once again.

I had a lot of fun with Mario 64, Waverace and Starfox @ launch then the good games just stopped coming.  I just think the first 3d gen was kinda crap because many devs had a time making the transition from 2d to 3d.

PS1 was a gold mine, bro, you missed out.

Actually a lot of the big PS1 titles were available on the PC, relatively quickly, like FF7 & 8, MGS1 and all the RE games.  They were alright but still quite primitive compared to PC 3D games.

The only genre lacking on the PC during the PS1 era was fighters, which was still pretty big.  PC had VF1 & 2 but I was a dumb kid back then and preferred the flashier Tekkens.

ps1 was cool but JESUS CHRIST every game was so fucking slow.  hey let's watch these shitty unskippable cutscenes with a shitton of loading in betwen, then force you to deal with all kinds of shitty rpg elements in games that didn't need them just cuz it was the popular thing to do at the time.  i almost cried when dmc came out because i knew we'd finally be seeing more faced paced action games after YEARS of stupid action-rpg-type games.
Title: Re: So why is gaming so damn good?

I never regretted not paying more attention to the ps1.  Its really overated and I noticed all the flaws tomb raider, resident evil, etc had that everyone miraculously noted only years later.  Tony Hawk was fun though.

Well long winded exposition and shoehorned rpg elements are in many many games these days.  As much as I like Modern Warfare multiplayer, its stupid that I have to unlock weapons with exp.  I want a full toybox right away goddamit.

It was a good system, I admit. But about 60% of its best games haven't aged well, and the N64's best were definitely better than the PS1's.

I'll agree with that somewhat, in that I can still easily play N64 games like Super Mario 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Blast Corps, Ocarina of Time, and others [but not Perfect Dark and Goldeneye, though].

Still, there are a good number of PS1 RPGs that are still really, really good.

psx is my favorite system.

It had a wealth of experimental and just plain WHACKY games that were crafted in a very interesting time in gaming history.

Nintendo 64 has nothing nearly as unique as Intelligent Qube, and that's just a highly touted mainstream title. Going through the psx library reveals my favorite game library in gaming history.

N64's processing power was all right, especially with the add-on ram pack.  What killed it was Nintendo's distinguished mentally-challenged decision to go with cartridges instead of optical media.

Himu, remember the PSX version of X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, where both players had to choose the same two characters to be able to switch them out at will because the PSX didn't have enough RAM to store more than two characters at the same time?  Not to mention all the frames that got cut out of the game.

PSX was awwwwful at 2D.

That's one of the worst examples.  The Saturn version was only that good because of the 4MB RAM cart.  Marvel Super Heroes sucked on both systems, despite the Saturn version making use the 1MB RAM cart.  Despite the cut frames, Capcom still showed the PSX could do a good job with 2D when they released Street Fighter Alpha 3.  That was an amazing, amazing port.  Shitloads of extras, the world tour mode, the extra characters...they outdid themselves.

 :rofl

I tried playing a bunch of N64 'hits' lately....  :-\
I did and guess what...

THEY ROCK! :rock

I want a Saturn so bad though, its the only worthwhile console I never played. And I call myself an old school Sega fanboy.

Hey Ichi I'll buy yours for 200$

Sure, tell Mupepe to send you the one I "lent" him.
