Title: I'm visiting NYC/Connecticut
Post by: Himu on April 30, 2010, 10:27:14 PM
This summer I'm fulfilling my life long dream of visiting NYC.

What are the best, but not exactly expensive places to eat? Any good Mexican food...by Tex-Mex standards? What about places to visit? Particularly art and movie related places? There's so much to NYC that I don't know where to start.

NYCbore give me your best shot! I want to soak in the best NYC has to offer.

Visit the top of the Empire State building [at night] and check out Liberty Island.

Well, beyond the obvious shit like the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty of course.

A decade ago, I visited NYC on a school trip.

Wandered through Central Park, saw a broadway show, visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of Liberty (wasn't able to go to the top of the Statue, even though it was pre-9/11), top of the Empire State Building at night.

I'd recommend all of the above activities.  Can't really make eating recommendations though.

I did all that except Central Park and the MMA [we didn't have time for it]. We also went to some cathedral.

Make sure you get a hotdog from a street vendor, Himuro.

There's tons of stuff to do.

Mexican sucks in NYC.  You'll need to visit the borough of the Mets for decent Mexican.  I'll come up with my big post later.

Oh, that reminded me, we also went to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, largest cathedral in the U.S.  Might have been the same one you went to.

Highly recommend the MMA, though you should reserve a day as it's HUGE. Worth it though especially if you like history.

We also did the Real Kramer Tour, lol

I've always wanted to try an authentic NYC hot dog.
Nathan's in Coney Island is the best.  Don't bother with the street vendors and their gross boiled hot dogs.  Gray's Papaya is decent for the price.  Sauerkraut and mustard is the classic New York topping.

How lax are weed laws in NYC? I want to tour through Central Park high, goddamit.
I wouldn't do it, bro.  Not in Central Park, which is full of cops.  Ever since Guiliani, the cops are very aggressive about ''quality of life'' crimes--weed smoking, public drunkness, etc.

That said, I smell weed in downtown Manhattan constantly.

Here are some of favorite places and shops in New York:

Restaurants:
Momofuku Ssam Bar-Chef David Chang does some creative stuff here, with his love of American comfort food and Asian touches.  I prefer it to his original ramen place.  Get the pork buns.  A must!
Minca-Best ramen in NYC
Hill Country-The best BBQ in NYC.  The Texas Style Beef Brisket is amazing.
Balthazar-Overpriced, but a classic french bistro.  Awesome dining room.
Blue Ribbon-open late.  Great fried chicken.
Shake Shack.  In Madison Square Park, near the iconic Flatiron Building.  Great burgers.
The Burger Joint.  Hidden in the Parker Meridien Hotel.  Another great burger joint.

Shops:
Muji: Japanese wares of all kinds
Uniqlo: Great fashion at low prices.  Another Japanese import.
Kid Robot: Cool vinyl toys

Gaming:
Chinatown Fair Arcade: The only decent arcade in NYC.  Great SFIV competition.
J&L Games: great back catalog of games, not found in GS or BB.

Along with the other touristy suggestions.  Going across the Brooklyn Bridge on foot or bike is awesome on a sunny day.

Here's a great guide to eating on the go:

some shit's going down

Somebody's goin' to emergency

somebody's going' to jail.

/West Wing

That's the true appeal of policing.  That, whatever shit you have to deal with, every so often, you have a front row seat to the greatest show on earth.

As someone who doesn't drive a patrol car and respond to 911 calls, any time I'm in the city, and I hear sirens, I think "If only I were a part of that, if only I were in the middle of it, the one responding to that call, and having to deal with the unknown of what comes with it".

For nightclubs, you'd probably like the Sullivan Room, Cielo or Love (though Love is more trance music) - pretty small places with good crowds of people. Stay away from Pacha, it sucks. MoMA is pretty damn amazing and you will get a lot out of that, as well as the Museum of Natural History. Central Park has concerts in the summertime called Summerstage, I've seen PVD and Talib Kweli before and they were pretty cool (though make sure you piss before the concert, the bathroom situation was a mess).

Oh yeah and let me know when you are in NYC Himu  :-*

Himu, don't smoke weed outside in Manhattan unless you're on a roof somewhere. Don't smoke outside in any other borough either unless you're in someone's backyard or something.

Have to know a dealer and stuff, it's illegal so we don't divulge.

And hash is weed. In fact, hash > weed. Hash is stronger. Hash is mostly pure THC. It comes from the crystals and resin of the plant.

I've been told that plenty of times but the first time I tried weed, it was the most incredible experience. A girl I know got me some through her friend in the US and the experience was just second to none. My arms were wobbly, I was giggly as fuck and everything was practically in slow motion. I've been smoking hash ever since and never, not even once, got that same experience. So I'm out on the hunt for good weed when I get to the US.

Depending on what kind of art you want to see, the Chelsea district has a ton of galleries.  Obviously a higher crap:good ratio (imo) than if you were just to hit up the important museums, but there is a lot of good stuff nonetheless.

might be the type of weed being used for the hash you're smoking.  indica or sativa...I forget which one gives the more energetic high.

Okay, we drove through NYC and we're at Milford, Connecticut which is near New Haven. Going to the Yale graduation tomorrow and then it's time for a week of NYC.

Experiences driving through NYC:

"Where the fuck is I-95?! What's it say on the map Lorene?"
"I DON'T KNOW IT ONLY SAYS I-95"
"FUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC"

Thought I got on the wrong exit, but I was on the right one the whole time.

Traffic:

"You know, we've been in bumper to bumper traffic ever since we got here over an hour ago! Go I-95! And it's SUNDAY!"
"The traffic is long, but it keeps going at a steady pace. It doesn't make me want to kill myself surprisingly."

Smell:

"I love NYC already and I haven't set foot in it yet!"
"It's gotta be that trash smell. I think we just drove past Queensbridge Projects. It smelled like shit but it smelled so homely."

:heartbeat

Then we all went to dinner at some place called Bin 100, lit up some of the weed we brought from Florida and now we're making fun of Lost.

East Coast :bow2

Sometimes it sucks to have such a stereotypically gay friend :-\

If you want to pay rent up to 2-3k a month, right out of high school with no college degree go right ahead.

Where do you think I wanna live, in Union Square? There are places in Manhattan that are in the 1k area, split between two/three people, doesn't sound like a huge problem. If it's too much for me to handle I'll bail out to another borough, mother-fucker won't have anybody to blame but himself.

It makes no difference to me, but unfortunately for the moment I'm tied at the ankle to this guy.

Oh god what? What is it with 20 somethings and that unbearable superiority complex? Am I doing something stupid? Do you feel I am blindly making my life decisions? Why do older people always look at the younger with silent judgement?

I'm not quite sure that's what's going on here, but it has in the past and frankly I'm sick of being judged by people who aren't even satisfied with their own, sad lives. And this post is probably getting lumped in with the rest of mine as "typical adolescent shit" by anybody who cares to read it. For the record I'm usually apathetic towards this shit but I just want some kind of answer lacking the unhelpful sarcasm and irony.

Most people fresh out of highschool aren't so sure what they want to be, so having free time and work to figure it out is no big deal.  The problem only comes in when you stay in that waiting period too long, get too comfortable and then have that "ohwait my life sucks" moment. It is not really a progression, but one life ending and then hitting reboot.

Try and find the job first obviously.

In short it will be a good experience, having a stereotypical gay friend with all sorts of wacky hijinks you'll the realise at the age of say 27 you 'wasted' a lot of money living this lifestyle and then depending on you economic circumstances move to the outer city\suburbs where you want to settle down with you gf, buy a house and talk about replacing the carpet with timbre floors.

Gathering pics from my trip to New Haven and what I saw of the Yale campus. Unfortunately, I don't have much as the people I'm with don't really absorb or soak in new places and we were in a rush to get to the "luncheon" after the graduation ceromony. Why we were in a rush I don't know, but almost all of my pictures were taken on the (albeit extremely short) walk through New Haven and the Yale campus.

It's really beautiful.

If these people impede on my journey through the greatest city in the world I'll be mad. I've wanted to visit NYC my whole life and I won't let anyone else ruin it.

It reminds me of the Radiohead song The Tourist.

Food Review

Name: Restaurant whose name no one can remember:
Meal: Western Omelette
How was it?: Alright, I regret getting it though, as everything everyone got looked 9999x better. IHOP makes a better omelette but the potatoes owned. The toasted rye bread I ordered kinda sucked. There was hardly any butter on it. The Sumatra French Roast Coffee (funny how I remember the coffee but not the name of the place?) was pretty good. Extremely bitter, though. Funny; over the past few days at all the hotels we've stayed at, their coffee is so delicious black that I never bothered to put any cream in.
Rating *** out of ***** better than Pan's Labyrinth

Unfortunately this is the bulk of what I saw. Or rather, what I took photos of and actually turned out well. I'd like to devote some time just exploring the place and taking photos but honestly I'd rather just head to NYC instead.  :P

Don't you live in the midwest?

Also, my friend revised his living criteria when I questioned his choice. He wants to live on the east side of Manhattan, not specifically the Upper East. And it has nothing to do with Sex and the City, when he lived in NY he only got to be familiar with that area, so he's sticking with it for now.

Pretty much my philosophy. I  just remind myself it's not always me against the world.

Oh I'm fully aware, but being lost with somebody is easier to bear than being lost all alone. And the few close friends I have know better than to misguide others where they have no experience. I won't be any worse off is what I'm saying, here.

Huh? I wanna take pictures and see it :( We all do. It's a part of the American spirit. Like...the Alamo! The Alamo and the war between Texas and Mexico was a war mostly waged because Texas wanted slaves; but we forget all of those icky details and celebrate the glory that is the Alamo in its racially clean white superior coated paint!

Fuck the Alamo. I visited that place when I was in 4th grade. A victory for the common man against the tyranny of slavery; a victory for our new overlords -- MEXICO!!!

I love the East Coast so much. I don't know what it is but just being around so much history and pizazz and public transportation makes me feel good, whereas Texas makes me down in the dumps. And it's all so close together! DC, Philly, Boston...they're all a stone's throw away. I don't want to move to California, I wanna move to NYC :( : ( :(

Himu, if you're gonna go to the Bronx Zoo go on a Wednesday. You pay whatever you want to get in on Wednesday. The price to get in is $15 every other day.

You can go to Central Park any fucking time. I haven't been to the rest, unfortunately.

don't go to wall st.  it's stupid.  it's a bunch of european tourists taking photos of the stock exchange building and posing with a statue of George Washington at Federal Hall

I feel sorry for startselect's parents, since they're going to have to bail him out when he's thirty and realizes he may have made a tiny huge mistake.

My dad is bankrupt, I won't have the luxury of getting bailed out. I'm afraid its the streets for me if I screw this up.

Why are you intent on annihilating yourself?

I misplaced my camera charger and my camera ran out of gas right when we got out of Grand Central Terminal Station. I took some pics with my cell phone but they're so...bad. :(

But I got a couple of new pics with my cam. Went to NYC today...I'm pretty amazed. Saw a lot of the sights in downtown. We saw a ridiculous amount of stuff and we didn't even do anything, which feels like a contradiction.

First off...these mother fuckers pay for this on a regular basis? Gotdamn.

A round trip ticket cost 25 bucks. Which is what I was expecting, but then I looked at the monthly rate. :lol Between the four of us, it took 100 bucks to get to NYC. :lol

Wanted to take photos of Grand Central. I thought my cam would last the trip if I conserved shots but...nope. It petered out right outside Grand Central.

It's got me down in the dumps.

Things we did:

- Take a grey line tour of all of Downtown. Cost 44 dollars.
- Visited Harlem, explored it quite a bit, walking down the various streets, especially Malcolm X Blvd.
- Saw Apollo Theater. Really wanted to go in...
- Bought I <3 NY hats
- Drank coffee at Dean and Deluca's...best coffee ever
- visited Empire State Building...jogged a few floors to see how high up we could make it without keeling over and dying.
- visited St. Paul's Chapel and observed the various things inside. The letters from the kids were really heartwarming and cute.
- visited 9/11 Memorial. Pretty sad.
- Saw the Statue of Liberty. I was moved.
- Ate lunch at Shake Shack. Holy shit.
- Saw McGruber at a movie theater in downtown
- Went to Times Square...wished we were rich
- Had a hot dog at a vendor. Was alright. Was more impressed by the fact they made the mustard spicy mustard than the hot dog itself.

Notes about NYC itself as it's my first time visiting:

- Place seems pretty liberal. It's fast-paced, it's got lots of action. It's my kinda place and I really want to live here. :(

- We were betting on how long it'd take to see the freaks of New York. No sooner than right outside Grand Central we saw: a bunch of Asian dudes in tight pants and cowboy boots and hipster vests with spiky hair, I'm sure Tokyo is like this; dude with a guitar digging his hand in his ass with his butt exposed in public, was sure he was homeless but not too sure; lots of cute girls in spandex and 80's clothes. I want to live here just to see all the characters you encounter. In fact, on the train ride to NYC some guy sat next to me and he's making jokes about serial murders and shit...and then suddenly brings up wrestling and we had a 30 minute talk about pro wrestling. It was so random and weird.

- I have never seen such a diversity of people in my life, even though I'm from Houston, Texas, reportedly one of the most diverse cities in the USA. But you never see so many different types of people in one place in Houston. In NYC I saw: more asians than I've ever seen at once, tons of black people, lots of Jewish wearing those skull caps and even the old Amish type Jewish guys, tons of Muslims, and a variety of white folks. In fact, I've never seen so many people all at once in a city. In Houston and LA and all the other cities I've been to, even in downtown...people walk, but not this much. Over in NYC everywhere I went there was a batch of people and yet I wasn't overwhelmed. I actually feel comfort from this for some reason.

I want to live in NYC so bad. :( I don't know if I'm just being starry-eyed here or if NYC has actually lived up to the hype I've built it up to be my whole life.

We had an eventful day and we didn't do, well, anything.

Just move to NYC, Garret, you make it sound as difficult as moving to the moon ffs. Do you fear the hardship of "making it"? Who cares if you're in a squalid, 150 sq. ft. studio for 900 a month, you'll be living in New fucking York.

And people trying to talk me outta moving there. Looking at Himumu here if I wait any longer the balls to go and move to NY I have will be long gone. Where's your sense of adventure? Your lust for danger? You're in your 20s for the love of God, you have no excuse to be so fatalistic.

Uh....I can't move to NYC because NYC doesn't have shit for a film industry. I have to move to LA to get any progress in my career. But my heart lies with the east coast, not the west coast. But the west coast has all the jobs I've grown up wanting to do, not the east coast.

It's called being realistic.

Career aspirations > adventure

What exactly is adventurous about it?

I mean is this like a theory that you're going to go there and then be in a constantly excited state of mind or are there physical things attracting you to the place (certain people, schools, businesses, etc)?

It's less about the location specifically and more about experiencing a different world than your own. I've been in California my whole life and one of the reasons I'm so attracted to NY is because of how culturally different it is from here.

On a personal level however, New York is a place of absolute wonder since my dad owns a pizza shop he created called Giant Manhattan Pizza, and my entire life I've been surrounded by images of New York, of stories from people who live and have lived back east.

I don't expect anything except a severe ass-whooping when I move to New York, and I have no preconception or assumptions about what it is in reality since I've never been there, but it's considered the crossroads of the world, and it being host to so much history and so many generations of people makes it an incredibly exciting place to be.

it goes into effect at like midnight, so it will only be happening when i am trying to come home from a show in manhattan, which is, of course, the time i will least want to deal with some train bullshit

but basically what will be happening is that the L train past the second stop in brooklyn will be nonfunctional so i catch a now infrequent train to about half a mile away from where i live.  thank god i don't live in bushwick or futher than williamsburg

Startselect, people are trying to talk you out of living in expensive ass manhattan. Go to the Bx, Qnz, or Bk. It's much cheaper and Manhattan is only a train ride away.

I know that! My friend is only familiar with Manhattan, if we can find a place to stay and explore the area and become more familiar with the other boroughs, we'll surely move around. If I can't make it in Man., I'm not going to force it just to prove a point. I'm more than down to try the other boroughs, since the tourists are probably going to sicken me after a short while in Manhattan. From what I hear they tend to stay in Times Square, though.

i know you don't want any advice and want to succeed or fail on your own, but i think that setting yourself up in a prohibitively expensive area of manhattan is more a chance to fail than a chance to succeed

but that's all i'm going to say on the subject.

It isn't that I don't want advice, I would love advice, I just don't want snarky, condescending advice. I know Manhattan is expensive, and I'm not ruling out other areas. My roommate is familiar with Manhattan's east side, I am not familiar with any of New York, since I'm going with this dude I want at least one of us to know where the hell everything is. After I get my bearings I'm probably going to find some other place or convince him to move to place that's easier to make rent for.

Also, what's up with Himu's picture of subway tickets? Aren't they $2 a pop for the day pass, or is that something different?
Title: Re: I'm visiting NYC/Connecticut
Post by: Himu on May 25, 2010, 11:28:20 PM
I didn't take pic of Subway tickets. I took pics of RAILROAD tickets. I'm in Connecticut, not NY. One of my friends we're staying got us in this nice hotel...for FREE. We rode the train from CT to NYC. Costs 25 bucks for a round trip. What I'm amazed at is the fact that people commute to work out of state to NYC EVERY DAY. I mean, the trip took about 40 minutes, but goddamn, 25 dollar tickets and monthly rates that cost over 300 bucks? And keep in mind that a lot of these people have CARS on top of all of this.

We weren't just seeing businessmen and women get on this thang to and from work either. What's the avg minimum wage in NYC?
Title: Re: I'm visiting NYC/Connecticut

that was a Rail Service, commuter rail to places like Milford CT to get suburbanites into the city

the normal subway rides are (as of now) $2.25 to go from anywhere to anywhere.  I buy a monthly card which gives me unlimited use of bus and subway for $89

tourists stay in times square, wall st and such like that.  it's a fucking nightmare if you have to get anywhere around there during tourist season.  coming from the dc area, i had an ingrained hatred of tourists already, but goddamn these euros drive me mad.

$6.25 last time I checked but from what I understand no one pays anywhere near that low in the city.

EDIT: nvm, went up to $7.25

On Wednesday:

- Took the rail from Milford to NYC, road the subway to the Bronx. Went to Bronx Zoo. Amazing place. I was curious as to how Bronx would be like but it feels pretty similar in terms of feel to Brooklyn, which is a good thing. Stayed at the zoo from like 11 am to 3 pm and had a blast. The place is fucking huge. On top of this, this was pay any price Wednesday, so the place was packed. Holy shit on a corn cob.
- Rode the rail back to Milford, rested for  a few hours because we were going to Broadway and watch the Lion King.
- Drove to NYC instead of taking the rail, traffic wasn't too bad and the layout wasn't that confusing...surprisingly, as far as driving through NYC for the first time could be. We wanted to see the city at night so we went around 6 pm. To pass the time walked around Central Park. Wonderful place!
- Saw the Lion King, expectations we shattered. That was my first real Broadway and I was amazed. :o
- Drove back to Milford.

Thursday:

- Explored the Connecticut countryside, one of my friends we were traveling with is from CT, so we decided to crash at her place, which is pretty close to UConn but still within the country. Like most Full Sail students, her folks are loaded. Beautiful place. :o
- Stayed over the night there and had a great dinner.

Friday:

- Funds almost exhausted and with the crappy weather headed our way we decided to high tail it to Florida. We're now in Tennessee.

Although I enjoyed NYC I feel like I didn't do anything :(

I'm going to go next year by myself, hopefully for 5 or so days. Then I can meet NYC Bore!

Man, I wouldn't have gone to the zoo.  Unless it's like a specific and rare animal that's only in that zoo or whatever.

I bought a new charger for my cam from a local radioshack in Milford. :bow RADIOSHACK :bow2

But by then...it was too late and I didn't get the chance to photograph all the tourist attractions. Oh well, there's next time I come.

A few more random shots of NYC

It must suck to have this ugly sign in front of your house.

Where we stayed before leaving the good ol' CT:

Ugh, I forgot to lower the ISO. Now it looks like it was photographed with a camera running Windows 95.

Hopefully when I come to NYC next time I'll have a dslr instead of a dinky point n' shoot.

Overall, it was a fantastic road trip. Probably my favorite one too!

Buy fingerless gloves and preoccupy yourself with forming witty responses to everyday situations.

Got to Orlando early in the afternoon, got on an early flight to Houston, now I'm back in Houston.

Jesus Christ.

You went down I-81 in Virginia instead of going down I-95?  Why?

Visited someone in Tennessee.

I dunno. It was just like any other city except faster.

Ever been to an American city? Keep that in mind, it's not really any different except you have to memorize subway maps. Just don't be too hasty.
