I'm visiting NYC/Connecticut
« on: April 30, 2010, 10:27:14 PM »
This summer I'm fulfilling my life long dream of visiting NYC.

What are the best, but not exactly expensive places to eat? Any good Mexican food...by Tex-Mex standards? What about places to visit? Particularly art and movie related places? There's so much to NYC that I don't know where to start.

NYCbore give me your best shot! I want to soak in the best NYC has to offer.

Visit the top of the Empire State building [at night] and check out Liberty Island.

A decade ago, I visited NYC on a school trip.

Wandered through Central Park, saw a broadway show, visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of Liberty (wasn't able to go to the top of the Statue, even though it was pre-9/11), top of the Empire State Building at night.

I'd recommend all of the above activities.  Can't really make eating recommendations though.

I did all that except Central Park and the MMA [we didn't have time for it]. We also went to some cathedral.

Make sure you get a hotdog from a street vendor, Himuro.

There's tons of stuff to do.

Mexican sucks in NYC.  You'll need to visit the borough of the Mets for decent Mexican.  I'll come up with my big post later.

Oh, that reminded me, we also went to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, largest cathedral in the U.S.  Might have been the same one you went to.

Highly recommend the MMA, though you should reserve a day as it's HUGE. Worth it though especially if you like history.

We also did the Real Kramer Tour, lol

I've always wanted to try an authentic NYC hot dog.
Nathan's in Coney Island is the best.  Don't bother with the street vendors and their gross boiled hot dogs.  Gray's Papaya is decent for the price.  Sauerkraut and mustard is the classic New York topping.

How lax are weed laws in NYC? I want to tour through Central Park high, goddamit.
I wouldn't do it, bro.  Not in Central Park, which is full of cops.  Ever since Guiliani, the cops are very aggressive about ''quality of life'' crimes--weed smoking, public drunkness, etc.

That said, I smell weed in downtown Manhattan constantly.

Here are some of favorite places and shops in New York:

Restaurants:
Momofuku Ssam Bar-Chef David Chang does some creative stuff here, with his love of American comfort food and Asian touches.  I prefer it to his original ramen place.  Get the pork buns.  A must!
Minca-Best ramen in NYC
Hill Country-The best BBQ in NYC.  The Texas Style Beef Brisket is amazing.
Balthazar-Overpriced, but a classic french bistro.  Awesome dining room.
Blue Ribbon-open late.  Great fried chicken.
Shake Shack.  In Madison Square Park, near the iconic Flatiron Building.  Great burgers.
The Burger Joint.  Hidden in the Parker Meridien Hotel.  Another great burger joint.

Shops:
Muji: Japanese wares of all kinds
Uniqlo: Great fashion at low prices.  Another Japanese import.
Kid Robot: Cool vinyl toys

Gaming:
Chinatown Fair Arcade: The only decent arcade in NYC.  Great SFIV competition.
J&L Games: great back catalog of games, not found in GS or BB.

Along with the other touristy suggestions.  Going across the Brooklyn Bridge on foot or bike is awesome on a sunny day.

Here's a great guide to eating on the go:

Somebody's goin' to emergency

somebody's going' to jail.

/West Wing

That's the true appeal of policing.  That, whatever shit you have to deal with, every so often, you have a front row seat to the greatest show on earth.

As someone who doesn't drive a patrol car and respond to 911 calls, any time I'm in the city, and I hear sirens, I think "If only I were a part of that, if only I were in the middle of it, the one responding to that call, and having to deal with the unknown of what comes with it".

For nightclubs, you'd probably like the Sullivan Room, Cielo or Love (though Love is more trance music) - pretty small places with good crowds of people. Stay away from Pacha, it sucks. MoMA is pretty damn amazing and you will get a lot out of that, as well as the Museum of Natural History. Central Park has concerts in the summertime called Summerstage, I've seen PVD and Talib Kweli before and they were pretty cool (though make sure you piss before the concert, the bathroom situation was a mess).

Oh yeah and let me know when you are in NYC Himu  :-*

Have to know a dealer and stuff, it's illegal so we don't divulge.

And hash is weed. In fact, hash > weed. Hash is stronger. Hash is mostly pure THC. It comes from the crystals and resin of the plant.

I've been told that plenty of times but the first time I tried weed, it was the most incredible experience. A girl I know got me some through her friend in the US and the experience was just second to none. My arms were wobbly, I was giggly as fuck and everything was practically in slow motion. I've been smoking hash ever since and never, not even once, got that same experience. So I'm out on the hunt for good weed when I get to the US.

Depending on what kind of art you want to see, the Chelsea district has a ton of galleries.  Obviously a higher crap:good ratio (imo) than if you were just to hit up the important museums, but there is a lot of good stuff nonetheless.

might be the type of weed being used for the hash you're smoking.  indica or sativa...I forget which one gives the more energetic high.

Okay, we drove through NYC and we're at Milford, Connecticut which is near New Haven. Going to the Yale graduation tomorrow and then it's time for a week of NYC.

Experiences driving through NYC:

"Where the fuck is I-95?! What's it say on the map Lorene?"
"I DON'T KNOW IT ONLY SAYS I-95"
"FUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC"

Thought I got on the wrong exit, but I was on the right one the whole time.

Traffic:

"You know, we've been in bumper to bumper traffic ever since we got here over an hour ago! Go I-95! And it's SUNDAY!"
"The traffic is long, but it keeps going at a steady pace. It doesn't make me want to kill myself surprisingly."

Smell:

"I love NYC already and I haven't set foot in it yet!"
"It's gotta be that trash smell. I think we just drove past Queensbridge Projects. It smelled like shit but it smelled so homely."

:heartbeat

Then we all went to dinner at some place called Bin 100, lit up some of the weed we brought from Florida and now we're making fun of Lost.

East Coast :bow2
