Gaf's laborious eyes seem to recognize a lot of stuff from the MK vs DC game and are extrapolating that into this being the same engine. :\
I must say, I'd prefer it to be as basic as possible. None of that up close stuff or the busting through stages or environmental kills, etc.
-
Looks shit, as expected.
-
Oh God, Sub-Zero's little iceman is getting chopped off... :o
-
Gaf's laborious eyes seem to recognize a lot of stuff from the MK vs DC game and are extrapolating that into this being the same engine. :\
Well yeah, that's a given. They wouldn't make a brand new engine for what's largely the same fighting game on the same platforms. Especially when it's the same Unreal license.
sorry, I meant the mechanics and gameplay systems. Like the up close fighting and what-not. I'd really like it if they just kept it bare bones, polished it up proper and not go bananas adding all those weird little gimmicks that ultimately end up diluting the gameplay imo.
-
2D KOFs, Samurai Shodowns, MKs, SF3:Alpha >>>>> any 3D crap
:lol
-
like I said, it had several sub-systems like the up-close bro hugging mini-game (seemingly replicated in the trailer with the x-ray stuff added for "gore") and you could occasionally pick the other fighter up and run through a bunch of walls with him in front of you while mashing buttons (both to escape, if you were being rammed, or to keep going if you were ramming)... and the previous game's "big" hook was the environmental kills and the "make your own fatality" which mean they were all generic pull-off-limbs finishers.
Frankly the last MK game that was worth not only the money, but the time, was Shaolin Monks which was more of a character action game with co-op and what-not.
-
Monacle on: MK vs DC was one of the worst fighting games I've ever played. The DOA series' rock/paper/scissors meta-game has more depth.
Monacle off: It's like watching Braveheart on TBS.
Shaolin Monks was awesome, though.
-
Frankly the last MK game that was worth not only the money, but the time, was Sub-Zero Mythologies which was more of a hurr durr hurr dick in my mouth.

Shitty western fighting game that will sell 400x more than it deserves to. Get hype!

Screw this game, I want DARK PRESENCE http://www.gallopingghostproductions.com/dark_presence/index.html (http://www.gallopingghostproductions.com/dark_presence/index.html) to come out

RANT TIME.
Some people are saying that this game is their return to form. Mortal Kombat Vs. DC was their "return to form." This looks very similar to it but without the (DC) comic book cheese. The MK cheese is still there in full force, however. MK always has the cheesiest character designs and game play. I will certainly check this out, but unless they've seriously overhauled the game, FINALLY got rid of the stiff animations, and ditched the "we're going to go out of our way to not have moves like Street Fighter but give our characters all these wacky, awkward move inputs," it's gonna be another bargain bin bomb like what MK Vs. DC turned out to be.
Another suggestion: Map the fatalities to one button. Seriously. Your average casual gamer is not going to be interested in looking up "up, up, away, down, towards, hold block+hk" in this day and age. Make the fatalities a reward for beating your opponent.
Continuing on a Mortal Kombat rant, I think they should drop making it a fighting game all together. Make another game like Shaolin Monks or continue what Unreal Championship 2 started, and have a hybrid FPS/brawler. Mortal Kombat has never been able to play as smoothly as its Japanese counterparts. Why is this? Everyone hoped that when they finally ditched the digitized characters and went for 3D models back with MK4, that this would be the end of the stiff cheese, but it was exactly the same. Ed Boon and crew are forever stuck in the mid-90's.
AFAIK the only MK that's been considered tournament-worthy (and thus is still played) is the arcade version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, because of its crazy amounts of combos. I have no idea how much of that was intentional on Boon's part or just glitches though. :p

Shaolin Monks was awesome, though.
Yeah, MK Vs. DC was pretty bad. Fun in that "so-bad-it's-good" way for a bit, but a terrible fighter when looking at its mechanics. It was also an unfinished game from what I have read.
-
Would have been nice if they attempted to produce "closer to reality" character model ala Fight Night Round 3 and 4. Obviously this wasn't possible when they first transitioned to 3D, but they could definitely pull this off today.
The engine used for MK vs DC was just Unreal Engine 3, though, which doesn't seem fitting for a fighter.
-
Eh, I actually like the trailer. I've always had a soft spot for MK2 and this hit me on all the right notes. I haven't been interested in a Mortal Kombat since Anthology so I guess this did its job in actually getting my interest peeked.
-
Yawn. I have not liked a Mortal Kombat since Ultimate MK3.
-
MEH, most distinguished mentally-challenged and boring fighting series on the market imo.
-
These guys need to get a fucking reality check and do a Mortal Kombat that ain't stuck in the motherfuckin Megadrive days.

Not really a fan of the series nor have I ever been but I honestly don't see any other way to do it other than what they are doing. Mortal Kombat has a very specific appeal. And it caters to that crowd which is pretty much what any old series is going to do.
If Mortal Kombat was going to "evolve" it would have done it a long time ago.
-
I think it looks fine. I don't judge fighters based on anything but gameplay since SF4, whose screens and video made me think it was the dumbest shit ever until I played it and fell in love. Will wait for demo.
-
looks more decent than I expected. that's not saying much. :-\

Its not.

Never was interested in any of the 3D MK games, it's nice this is going back to a more 2.5D style similar to SF4. Still want a SF vs MK game one of these days though (made by Capcom of course) :P
-
interesting that there going 2.5d but the animations still look weird as hell

I think there's a good chance that this will be the best fighting game of 2011.
It's been included in the EVO line-up and it SEEMS that the developers MIGHT know what they are doing. A potentially good western fighting game is a sure sign of the apocalypse.
-
MSTRKRFT is contributing to the soundtrack, which is cool.

I have to admit that I've always been a total sucker for this franchise as a kid; from memorizing backstories, drawing fanart, to loving BOTH movies... you name it. It's been a guilty pleasure for so long, but this entry is actually shaping up into a solid game. The media's feedback has been extremely positive.
-
Yeah, but the media don't know shit about fighting games, so who cares. More importantly, the feedback from the srk crowd has been positive, and that's pretty surprising since MK has been a joke since UMK3 (or MK2, depending on who you ask). I know that Nether Ream is trying to make this a respectable fighter, and it looks like they're doing a pretty good job with it so far.
I haven't been this excited about a Mortal Kombat game since I was 12.
-
MK2 is one of my fave games of all time. Hope this can elicit some of that sweet sweet nostalgia.
Series has been crap since, although UMK3 was playable.
-
yeah, the game actually looks OK :o

They are really hyping the challenge tower. You get "the greatest prize in the world" for completing all 300 challenges. Can't wait to find out what it is firsthand :D
-
An achievement for 10 points or a bronze trophie.
-
maybe even a gamerpic! :o :o
-
Picking up the 360 version of this tonight. I'm actually looking forward to this since they seem to be putting a lot of effort into making a decent Mortal Kombat game. Anyone else grabbing this?

Double-dipping. Will have 360 version tomorrow, PS3 prolly Wed.
-
lololol
People are such tools about this game, it's still the same engine as Mk vs DC with tweaks. I love how posers are all 'OMG THIS IS TOURNAMENT LEVEL GAMEPLAY' :lol ...and the MK Vs DC engine was a tweaked version of the MK:Armageddon engine. Some animations are straight from the xbox generation game ffs sake. Get some evo idiots to test the game, and suddenly it all becomes legit and stuff.. Marketing is awesome.
edit: I actually like the game, its a blast to play, but its just hilarious to see the reaction of all the idiots on GAF who suddenly love the game.

I'll probably get it for my birthday in a few days. Gives me time to see what people are saying about the game and if the online is decent.

The game feels kinda simplistic compared to the likes of SSF4 and Marvel, but that was a given. Online is a mixed bag...sucks on PS3 (I kept getting kicked out of matches when trying to rematch and it took forever to find people), is pretty decent on 360. Hopefully it will be patched.
Rage quitters are worse here than they are in other fighting games.

I don't play fighting games any more but this one looks fun just watching some youtube vids. The x-ray special moves in this game are so of the most brutal moves I've ever seen in a fighting game.

MK1's Sub-Zero is a bad guy who killed Scorpion, disappeared/died at the end of the game.
Scorpion is usually neither good nor evil, just wants to settle scores I guess.
MK2 and onward's Sub-Zero is the original's brother, is a good guy.
Noob-Saibot is MK1's Sub-Zero, still a bad guy.
Kill me now.
-
1.) Is Raiden still in it
2.) Can you go back-back-forward and do his body launch attack that's the best move ever

LOL, the 360 servers were down last night, and PS3 online for this game continues to suck. Hope they get this shit working properly ASAP.

roommate got this for 360. we played it on his 360 a bit. It's...okay. It's not my thing but it's not bad either. I was most impressed, however, by the multiplayer mode that hands out benefits/handicaps. It really puts a nice twist on the game. In one level, the stage got dark every 5 seconds so we couldn't see each other or our health. At the same time, it was raining ice that froze us when hit.
Really novel and inventive gameplay mode. Shame it's not in a Street Fighter game.

It is a jankfest. Don't like that they didn't go back to old movesets either...where is h/l pk? And a lot of the moves are counterintuitive. Still, better than the last one I played a few years back. Gonna bring it to a party tomorrow and see how it fares.

there is a fatality training mode that I want to put out for people later. all you do is fatalities, over and over and over. I think drunk people will dig it.
re:disclaimer, your memories are very close to mine. we are prob around the same age. :lol
I was a prince at MK2 back in the day. Before internet, so big fish/small pond, etc...but it really clicked with me as a young nerd.

Is anyone playing this on a stick with a 6-button Street Fighter layout? The default control settings are shit, but I can't find a solution that I like. :(
-

I am, but I've only played a few matches so I don't really know what I'm doing yet. Right now my setup is:
FP BP Tag
FK BK Block
Game's pretty fun, anyway. Right now I like Kitana and Kabal the most, but I haven't even tried 80% of the characters. Kung Lao seems good too (my friend was destroying me with him).
-
my roommate has tried playing this on stick and it's impossible. it's a pad game.
-
I don't know what I'm doing either, but I did notice that doing EX moves is a pain in the ass on that layout, especially with FP + BLK.
I was trying out this one for awhile:
TAG FP BP
BLK FK BK
but my fingers keep touching the last two buttons, which have to be mapped to throw and stance since there's no way to turn them off. :duh
I think this is probably the best option:
FP TAG BP
FK BLK BK
Tag is still kinda in the way, though.
-
Wait, is this game good? I'd completely ignored it and didn't realize it had been released but then I see all these people on gaf talking about how it's the best single player fighting game since VF4 and is good as a competitive fighter as well.
-

I use a fight pad, but the face button layout just doesn't work for me...I had to map the block button to the right trigger. If I was set on using a stick with this, block would HAVE to be set to one (or both!) of the middle buttons.
And yeah, their way of doing EX moves is awkward as hell. Most people seem to just save all the meter for the x-ray supers anyway.

Don't bother, Bebpo. "single player" and fighting games don't go together, and if you don't want to spend the time practicing in other fighters and/or playing online, what is going to change with this?
-
VF4/Evo says you're wrong. The SP modes were amazing and you could never play a vs. game in your life and still get the depth and enjoyment of the fighting system.
-
I decided to go:
FP BP BLK TAG
FK BK STANCE THROW
Block is a little less awkward for me to use like this and EX moves aren't too bad. X-ray is weird, so I put stance under it so I can just press stance and block simultaneously for the X-ray attack. I usually never use mapped buttons, but they didn't give me the option to turn it off so fuck it.
-
VF4/Evo says you're wrong. The SP modes were amazing and you could never play a vs. game in your life and still get the depth and enjoyment of the fighting system.
These games are designed to be played with two players, and Mortal Kombat isn't going to have the depth of Virtua Fighter anyway: Forget mechanics/depth, you're not going to get that level of AI and you're not going to find much to do after you complete the story mode. Save your money.
-
mortal kombat has a thorough story mode though. i'm actually impressed by all they put into the sp mode.
-
All the recent MKs have good SPs imo... lots of unlockables, upgrades, etc - Deception in particular stands out to me
-
^ I liked Deception's story too. That was the last MK game I played before now actually.
VF4/Evo says you're wrong. The SP modes were amazing and you could never play a vs. game in your life and still get the depth and enjoyment of the fighting system.
Both games are good as single player games for completely different reasons though. VF4 had great AI and fighting against the computer was actually fun. MK is just like most other fighting games: it reads your inputs and cheats, and the AI is just not very fun to fight against. What makes MK's single player good is the story mode and 300 challenges and lots of shit to unlock.
I hate playing against the computer every fighting game ever besides VF. Though some games have good story modes, like BlazBlue and apparently MK.
But maybe you'll still like the game anyway if you like the 2D MKs.
-
Ah. Yeah I love VF SP because the AI is really fun to play against and never feels cheap. There are so many ghost AI types and each has a unique looking item version item of the character that it's really varied. Plus having rankings and item matches and title matches and stuff makes SP a lot of fun.
otoh stuff like Blazblue, I appreciate that they have story modes, but the actual AI feels as boring to fight against like SF/KoF AI and when they start being cheap and crap I'm over it.
The last MK I played was UMK3 and I grew up playing MK1-3 and loved them but then I forgot about the series when it became 3d and was sucky.
-
Well story mode actually is awesome. It's like you're playing a third Mortal Kombat movie or something. I hope it's fairly long, because I've only played it for a couple hours but I feel like I'm half way through already. edit: Never mind, just noticed there's an achievement for completing story mode 50% and I still don't have it. Good.
I'm pretty happy with this game so far. Not sure if I like it more than MK2 and UMK3 yet, but it's comparable to them at least, so that's about all I could ask for.
-

I still haven't tried story mode, lol. The game would be great if they could fix the damn online play. I did notice that playing against people on my friends list seems to result in better quality connections. It's weird.
Also the rooms were down AGAIN but I notice I could still join friends games.
-
I kinda want to gamefly this title. :-[
And I haven't played a fighting game in years.
-
This game is pretty awesome, I admit it. The engine is a bit janky and there's plenty of silly stuff that strike me as oversights on NetherRealms part due to their lack of experience with competitive fighters, but there's enough depth and variation to the characters to hold my interest for at least a few months. I will never be a fan of the dial-a-combo system and general absence of reliable hit verification, but it does tend to serve the balance of risk/reward fairly well (with a few notable exceptions discovered so far). Beyond the technical aspects, the free form juggle system gives plenty of room for style and flash and makes training mode experimentation a highlight.
If nothing else, the amount of on-disc content and overall variety puts all other fighters released this gen to shame, including VF5, and not a thing is half-assed. Crapcom should be embarrassed to have something as skeletal as MvC3 on the shelves next to this game.
-
MvC3's online play still spanks MK's though, even with the shitty lobby system.

Good news:
A statement about some of the issues users are experiencing when playing Mortal Kombat 9 online was made by NetherRealm Studios on the official MK forums.
"Thank you for supporting Mortal Kombat! Due to the overwhelmingly positive reception to the game, Mortal Kombat has millions of online matches being initiated worldwide every day, and we have run into some unanticipated technical issues. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are aware of the issues with the online gameplay – specifically with "King of the Hill" and Ranked 1 v. 1 matches - and we want to assure our fans that we are focused on resolving online issues ASAP. We have added a “Technical Issues” section to our forum so please be sure to let us know what issues you are having so we can address those as soon as possible. Users will begin seeing improvements in online play over the course of the next two weeks. In the meantime please note that none of this will impact the single-player or offline multiplayer experience, and we greatly appreciate your patience!"
Fingers crossed!

Reptile is my main, is he considered low-tier or something? I've never seen it used online, and right my stats are like 36-9 o_O
-
Reptile is considered to be one of the better characters in the game, as far as I understand. Certainly very good. I think EMP Tom Brady says as much on the podcast. Popularity isn't always a good indication of who the community feels are upper-tier characters, especially early on when a lot of casuals are still playing heavily.
-
I have no idea who I want to main in this game. I like pretty much everyone I've put any time into so far. Even Styker is fun, and I've always hated Stryker.
-
We would always refer to MK characters by their porn names
STREAKER
BONE'YA
JAX-OFF

...Especially when casuals' idea of "strategy" is doing the same two moves (projectile/teleport) over and over again. Combos? What are those? :lol
I still get plenty of rage quitters who get all pissy (and in MK, they have mics, so you get to hear the idiocy!) when I stop this by counter-spamming with my own projectiles. ESPECIALLY with Kitana. Shit is hilarious....you get a guy that does nothing but teleport attacks with Smoke screaming "ALL YOU GUN' DO IS SPAM DEM FANS!?! U PUSSY FUCK U!!!!"
-
Last night I played against a weird guy, he used Smoke and he pretty much juggled me non stop for two fights. I couldnt do anything at all to stop him (except to pull a combo breaker once), he was pulling 11-12 hits on each combo. It was not very fun >:(. The dude had some insane stats like 550 victories and 20 defeats.
-
Sounds like Smoke's standard BNB. FK, down+FP, BP -> (dash forward) can be juggled into itself two or three times followed by a jumping attack and air throw for ~35%. And you can land it easily off his smoke bomb projectile, which is fast as shit.
Tagging someone with that thing as much as possible is Smoke in a nutshell.
-
Smoke is awesome. Down, left B over and over again until victory. Sometimes you throw in a down, right, Y but for the most part he's a pretty easy character to learn and play. I really need to play all of them a few times and figure out who my five are going to be. I feel learning any more will be tricky to keep all the moves straight.

LOL, Green Nan. You get a pass because you don't play fighters, but you need to find your ONE character to stick with and learn his/her combos and strategies.
-
To be fair, you do have to do SOMETHING after the smoke bomb because I don't think it does any damage on its own. :P
And while it's a really great projectile to punish zoning attempts and as an anti-projectile attack from full screen, it's not much of a viable zoning tool against a rushdown character because of the trajectory, and it's always on the losing end of a projectile hit trade if you're too close (because it necessitates a follow-up to do damage). Spamming it isn't very effective.
-
got it 8)
-
Yeah, people love rage-quitting at fatalities. :lol
I played like six matches against this dude who suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked with Kitana. I beat him every time and he'd hit the rematch button 10 times. The last match I had a flawless going, and he just left it sitting there, so I obliged him and "taunted" (keep changing stances) and teabagged until the timer ran out.
Hopefully they REALLY get the online on the ball, because the stuff I was trying tonight in practice mode would not come out online. :/
Edit: In my defense, he kept using that move where Kabal kicks his sword at you so yeah, I kept popping off smoke bombs and shit. Then I went invisible and that really pissed him off.
There's nothing wrong with spamming attacks. It's getting beaten by someone doing the same thing over and over that's the problem. If some idiot is doing that shit to you and can beat him with something incredibly simple, go for it! If I see that I can totally kill someone with nothing but projectiles, I will do it. It's not my problem that they don't know how to block or stop trying to do moves immediately when getting up.
-
I just don't like feeling cheap, I guess.
#1 rule of fighting games: there's no such thing as cheap.
-
what pads are you guys playing on?
also does anyone have a link to a beginners guide? i can't find how to do the xray moves.

Both triggers. Or look at the movelists from start menu. Press x/a for the second page.
-
also does anyone have a link to a beginners guide? i can't find how to do the xray moves.
I've been using this: http://wiki.shoryuken.com/Mortal_Kombat_9
Goes over the basic system. Doesn't have a lot of character specific detail, but most of the pages have all the moves and a few basic juggles to get the ideas flowing. You're kinda free to come up with whatever juggles you like in this game, and with the damage scaling, most variations aren't going to be really far off from one another, damage-wise.
-
As far as I can tell, you recover too slowly to juggle after an uppercut. Not sure if it works after an anti-air; I never even thought to test it.
It's usually fairly easy to tell what you can potentially juggle after. Neutral jump punch is a universal ground bounce for ALL characters that can be followed up on. Aside from that, you just need to take a look at your character's attacks and see if anything bounces or does a vertical launcher and just try to land some different stuff after it. Often you'll have to immediately dash or take a step forward to hit anything.
edit: Actually, I just noticed it tells you if an attack is a ground bounce or launcher on the Shoryuken guide.
For instance, after Smoke's FK, down+FP, BP series, you have a fair amount of time to dash forward and do some stuff. You can do another of that series and end it with an air throw, or you can dash forward do a short ground combo into smoke bomb and follow-up as they're falling back down, or you can jump forward and do a jump kick and cancel it into air teleport punch. Lotta different things to try out.

Or it could be that you beat him and made him have to work harder to take you out. :)
-
This is really the best fighting game of the generation so far...
-
no, although I've heard similar from friends. :lol
The single-player content is great, much better than most. I will say it has gotten a lot of people playing fighting games. too bad it probably doesn't really translate to many more people playing other fighters...same deal as wii:video games.
-
Ive noticed that there are people who lose the first few matches on purpose then completely buttfuck you. Is this common in online fighting games? I just played a Sub-Zero that I worked over for a couple fights with Smoke and Johnny Cage (who I think is the easiest to play of all characters) then he started completely kicking my ass. So I asked him and he told me that he loses on purpose for a bit.
I'm sure I could have beaten him in the last match or so but I let my guard down thinking I was clearly better than him.
I have never ever encountered this in any of the fighting games i've played online.
Thinking of actually switching to a pad for this game.

Having a block button as a trigger just works better in this game, IMO.
-
Green Man, that dude was full of shit. He probably just tried doing simple shit, and when that didn't work, he went after you.
I switched to using the 360 dpad and it works really well. I'm pumping out moves a lot better so the 360 dpad isn't a complete piece of shit after all!
Wait...were you using the analog stick before?
-
It's just WAY more difficult to play on the analog stick since they're so loose and lack any sort of corners. It's hard to be precise.
-
Bah, I still need the last achievement for getting 100 wins online in UMK3. I wonder if people are still playing that.
I might still pick that up though. Depends if it uses GGPO or something similar.
-
I'll pick it up just to have arcade perfect versions of all the games.

If you set up a boosting session at TrueAchievements, you'll get swarmed. Somehow I suspect if you set up "just for fun" sessions, you'll have less luck.

Klassic DLC is now up on XBLA and PSN for 400pts and $4.99 respectively. Consists of palette swap costumes for Scorpion, Subzero, Ermac, Reptile, Jade, Mileena and Kitana, and classic fatalities for Reptile, Scorpion and Subzero.
-
I'm a sucker for the new MK so I'm downloading the costumes when I get off work. I'm eager to see what they show at E3. I'm hoping some new characters, levels, or even the rumored Freddy vs. Jason. It's now up to the third party developers to redeem E3. Bring it on.
-
Too bad the online-fix patch (and the DLC characters) isn't up yet. :-\

Trailer for next DLC character, Kenshi.

-
So the last DLC character has been revealed, following Skarlet, Kenshi, and Rain.
It's Freddy, lol.

Wh- wait... what?
-
lol fighting games
-
An old rumor was Freddy and Jason as DLC in October.
Guess Boon couldn't decide on a fourth DLC character to go with now. :P
-
Wow, that's AWESOME :lol
I'm suddenly glad I picked it up for $30 a month ago. Freddy is a great character. Nightmare on Elm Street on nes rocked.
Too bad about the double claw thing (looks dumb) and using the new movie design (looks dumb) but still great that he's in the game.
I never really understood the point of fighting game trailers showing all the moves, supers, fatalities, combos for every new character. It kind of takes away from the fun of first playing them and checking out their stuff.
-
WHAT THE FUCK.
Freddie doesn't have two gloves.
Also, it's new freddie? That's weird.
What's the difference between new Freddie and old, other than it doesn't look like Robert Englund?
-
I'd already read that, actually. What I meant is, visually, how is the new discernible from the original? Looking at that video, I don't see anything that is standout different from the original, except maybe the facial makeup gives him less nose than the Englund version.
-
I bet this isn't the last of the downloadable characters. I'm sure they'll announce another round of characters and another Kombat pass for all 4. We MUST have Jason Voorhees.
