It's at 10 AM, by the way.

I bet Apple gives all iPhone 4 users a free "bumper" to fix signal problems and a date for the OS fix, if not same-day release.

I don't think it's fixable.  It seems to be a hardware issue.  Having a case helps.

They have, by re-calculating the algorithm that generates the signal strength amount in the iPhone 4. Apparently everyone has just been having shitty reception but didn't know cause it was showing a good reception :teehee

Oh shit, Apple engineers are already throwing Jobs underneath the bus. Bail out! :lol

Quote
Last year, Ruben Caballero, an Apple senior engineer and antenna expert, warned Apple CEO Steve Jobs that issues with the phone's antenna could "lead to dropped calls," reports Bloomberg, citing a source "familiar with the matter."

According to Bloomberg's report, Caballero "informed Apple's management the device's design may cause reception problems, said the person, who is not authorized to speak on Apple's behalf and asked not to be identified. A carrier partner also raised concerns about the antenna before the device's June 24 release, according to another person familiar with the situation."

That's for all iphones, not just the 4.  Every iphone ever has had the broken signal reception function.

This is all pretty hilarious.  but I'm hoping it ends up in the iPhone4S being the phone of the forever next year when my 3GS contract is up.  The current iPhone 4 would probably be fine for me too, since I don't live in the boonies and have a good network here.

No, the reception problem is because of poor hardware design. Network problems are actually worse in major metropolitan areas because of AT&T shitty network. Together, well, yeah.

Next, some really interesting data from AppleCare, we looked at the statistics, we asked what's the percentage of all iPhone 4 users that have called AppleCare about the antenna or reception, or anything near reception problems. Because you would have thought 'Jesus, it must be a lot of users complaining about this' -- So what percentage have called AppleCare? 0.55% Just one half of one percent."

If a Bumper is necessary for your product to work, it should be included with all phones manufactured henceforth and free to anyone who buys a unit that did not include one. To give them out for free only until September 30th is pretty lame.

EDIT: You also don't blame everyone else for your design flaws. :lol

They're seeing how things go until September 30th (i.e. waiting for it to blow over) and then seeing if they need to do anything else. I didn't get the impression that it was a hard and fast cut off date.  but I'm guessing it probably will blow over by then and they'll come out with a new model next year that buries this completely.  Maybe some stragglers who didn't get the case will fuss a bit and get denied extra coverage.

Q: Are you willing to make an apology to investors?
Steve: You know we hear from customers who love this phone and have a great experience with it, and we're doing a lot to help them with any issues they're seeing. To investors, you know, you invest in the company we are, so if the stock goes down $5... I don't think I owe them an apology.

Where did you get that from?

The fact that Apple just said they'll give everyone a free case through September, and the Bumper is the only thing that has been proven to fix the signal ???

Shipments two months from now, meaning phones that are produced in Taiwan as we speak, meaning a possible hardware fix (insulating the antenna is very easy/phone production lines are  always suspect for small adjustments even mid-production cycle-- see HTC), is a more likely scenario than yours Federwang ::)

I would think the newest batch would have a hardware fix, but this Q&A implies it isn't going to happen:

10:40AM Q: Are you doing anything else to address the issue? Perhaps changing hardware?
Steve: You know, the 3GS has the same problem. We're getting reports from customers that this is better than the 3GS. So I don't know changing the antenna design would help -- I don't know what our next antenna design will look like.

If there was a hardware fix, Jobs would have said so. Sucks for anyone that buys an iPhone 4 after September 30th. Awfully convenient that the fix for the problem is a $30 piece of plastic manufactured by Apple.

First of all, there are reports that the hardware fix is cheaper than $30 dollars, and it's being called a "quick brute force" solution. A more elegant fix is should be introduced with the CDMA model, or so the rumor goes.

Second of all, if they had mentioned it in the conference, THEN everyone would demand a recall because no one wants to own the defected model. As I said, small changes to hardware is very common, as I said sometimes its happens during a production cycle.

"Pipedream"? ::) Oh will, trying to pin the Apple fanboy label on me, are we?

Yes, because I'm sure in a press conference to address hardware complaints that Apple wouldn't be better served by announcing a long-term solution and a short-term one (free Bumpers). People are not going to return their iPhone 4, because they'd have to wait over 30 days. Don't be silly. What you're saying makes absolutely no sense, especially from a business perspective. Their stock went down 8%, Jobs would like it to go back up.

You guys need to lay off Apple.  They just want to make good products for people who care about technology (and fashion.)  Steve is just saying his end of the story.  Why should they be held to such a high standard?  They've been on a roll for putting out quality products ever since the first ipod came out and they deserve to reward themselves by bragging a little. Or a lot, I don't care.  I celebrate with them, knowing that they'll probably serve me well for the rest of my life.  Sure, the cost may be high, but it's good motivation for working harder in life, so that I can afford the finer things.  Willco, apologize and take back your statements about Apple or you can kiss your forum goodbye.

11:04AM Q: Is there a hardware redesign in this generation that could fix this problem?

A: You can go on the web and look at pictures of Nokia phones that ship with stickers on the back that say "don't touch here" -- you can go on YouTube and see these. We should you three phones today, all good phones. So right now the state of the art of the entire industry is that no one has solved this problem. Would I like Apple to be first? Yes. Can we make it better right now? Maybe, we'll see.

Oh wow

so I always get 5 bars in my apartment...

*downloads and installs update*

2 to 3 bars.

:rofl

Never had a problem with dropped calls or anything, but that's pretty hilarious.  Somebody forgot to carry the Y for about 4 years or however long the phone has been out.

From Engadget:

11:13AM To be clear, Jobs was not happy with our question. "You guys talk to each other a lot."

11:12AM We asked if there was possibility of a software fix... based on the NYT article stating an inside source claimed there could be a fix of that type coming.

Steve had a long answer largely dismissing the question. Then Scott Forstall asked for a mic, and he said that the statement in the Times was "patently false."

The conference where they invited major tech bloggers and pundits? I sure do, these people are the ones who will go back and blog about this so called solution so the message will trickle down to the rest of people who caught wind of this in the first place and made all the fuss.

You mean the conference where they invited major mainstream media and press, and was being discussed on cable networks that specialize in financial information and news? This became a big deal because their stock took a hit, not because of Internet bloggers.

Quote
A total recall would cost Apple 1.5 billion dollars, you'd be stupid to think that they were going to announce it here, in front of this crowd that was responsible for the recent media shitstorm.

Uh, I never said anything about a recall, Jin. I said they are going to cover the case until September 30th, then you are going to have to pay for it or handle the phone a certain way.

There is no hardware fix, your reply is a pipedream. Apple will eat the cost of a piece of plastic that costs pennies to make, because when they charge $30 for it after September, they'll more than make up the cost of giving them for free for a couple of months and then some.

And yes, you don't have a major press conference, hastily cobbled together to address a design flaw that is battering the stock price right now, and not announce a hardware fix if there is one. That makes no sense, Jin. You seem to be basing your opinion on the hope that Apple is a benevolent company. It's a company. It wants to make money. Don't be dense.

Free Bumper until September 30th, or a refund if you bought one already. There will be giving out free third-party covers, but will not refund those if you bought them already.

After that, you have to pay for one, or if you believe Jinfash, Apple will pass on the prospect of making an additional $30 on each phone to drastically alter the design of the iPhone 4 on the manufacturing lines because Steve Jobs doesn't like money, just customers.

Jinfash is right, Willco just doesn't want to admit he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.  Without a doubt they're working to see if there's a cheap and easy hardware solution they can implement quickly to make this shitstorm go away.

so, what is the ultimate news that came out of this thing? I still want the iphone 4, but are they fixing the hardware? should I wait a bit longer?

also, the other day was the first time I made a call with an iphone 4 and it dropped a call.  I wondered why for a second, then realized the way I instinctively hold phones covers that one spot.

ZAGG, the creators of the invisiShield micro protective film (that I've been using ever since i bought my 3Gs) has announced that they're iPhone 4 version of the product will also coat the bezel thus solving the signal issue. :bow :bow
What makes me nervous about using it is that it's permanent and any little fuck up is going to be there

I think both are lame but the apple ones make me not want to own the product.

I saw one yesterday where a woman (don't think she was Asian; risky move for apple) uses facetime to tell her husband that she is pregnant.  It wasn't "we're having a baby", it was "remember that thing we were working on?" then you wait a few seconds to watch the faces contort and try to show emotions.  First thing I thought was "why would anyone willingly have children?".  Second was the idea that video is a substitute for human interaction.  Why can't there be an honest facetime ad where you try to find someone else in your contacts that owns an iphone 4, and when you do, you realize there is no purpose to a video call outside of the novelty.  The commercial ends with both people awkwardly looking at their phones.

I played with an iPhone 4 today.  I shouldn't have.  I knew my 3G was slow but I didn't know it was UGLY and slow.  :'(

That's how I felt when I messed around with a friends iphone 4.  I make myself feel better by thinking I'm waiting for the white version or for Verizon to get it.  Well, except I don't even have an iphone 3g.

Yeah, that's pretty telling of the environment Jobs fosters.

But, seriously, look at the results. This phone, yeah, it has a design flaw. Yeah, Steve "Skeletal" Jobs is trotting out to spin the PR. But the iPhone has not only redefined the entire mobile phone landscape in the way iPods redefined personal music players, it has moved the company from a niche item to a mainstream producer in a highly competitive field. And don't get me started on how much the Macintosh changed mainstream computing. Jobs positive influence can be hated, but it can't be denied.

This is how I felt using my 3g all day then using my wife's 4 at night. I'd venture to say the 4 is at least 3 times faster.
