I'm honoring a girl whom I used to stalk.

I was pretty much at my lowest point in years after second semester ended in May.  Just wanted to die or go into serious hermitage.

but i just got an A- in my first summer course.  got a sweet contingency plan in case I drop out of law school.  A date this friday.  pitchfork on sunday.  Turned into a pretty great summer.   Now I'm just angry, but in that "fuck everything, I'm having fun no matter what" kind of way.  Motivationally angry??

I think you need to subject yourself to some trauma at this point.  Get yourself out of whatever comfort zone it may be and shock your system.  I'm kind of a social dunce in many ways but I made a lot of progress when I had to learn how to support myself and work with people.

And a prostitute wouldnt be a bad idea at this point.  Demystify sex.

This is too bad.  Any good shrink should be at least two parts nihilist.  You should come to New York and see a good Park Avenue analyst.  If Wrath can come to America for Sunny-D you can surely come for some premium head-care.

In other word, bug spray, homey.

But really - you can go far on a bike.  You can see a lot of cool stuff and get exercise.  Just do it!  If you hate it, sell the equipment.  I bet you'll hang onto it, though.

I still do it.  The two seconds it takes for people to walk past the cubical, glance at me, face semi-fallen when they realize the cubical is already taken, and me to look back at this person - both of us understanding that I had won; that today was my victory - is enough human contact for me.

"Both"? There are 73 people involved. Experienced or not, put your heads together and for each problem you encounter I'm sure someone or other could work out a creative solution. The magic of crowdsourcing.

Thinking about it a bit more I'm imagining something like the group research scenes in Buffy, only with an orgy going on at the same time. Everything would take place in a big room with half the space, and about half the people at any given time, devoted to the orgy itself, while the other half of the people would (1) observe the proceedings, (2) research process improvement ideas (that half of the room would be set up as a library) and (3) shout out any resulting good suggestions.
Title: Re: I have become an angry, bitter person
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on July 17, 2010, 06:41:24 PM
I guess it might work better if the room were circular with the action in the center and the research library section around the rim and at a higher elevation.

nope, lawl school class
I was just asking because my school doesn't offer summer law classes.

yeah, my school offered a pretty decent amount of courses this summer and they keep adding a few here and there.  Like random 3 day long all day 2 credit seminar classes in the beginning of August...Not sure if this is the reason, but I think a lot of people got their asses kicked in 1L (I definitely did) and they're offering chances to make up for it to retain more students, since they have a high attrition rate.

That sounds like a good idea. Glad you're doing well in your summer classes.

I have one year left, the knowledge of which is partly responsible for my terrible depression and anxiety of late. I will be trapped in a profession I want no part of, and there's nothing I can do. /emo-whitewhine

I'm going to try and get a prescription for an anti-depressant tomorrow to prevent myself from manabyting the dust. I'm also going car shopping, and maybe that will help, too: Why would a guy who just bought a car kill himself? Exactly! (Can you believe I took three different logic classes in college).

I was going to make a joke about you not seeing my 'joke' in following Malek's use of dislogic, and that you should have taken a joke class in you uni, but wait, you went to a continental philosophy school so all your classes were joke classes, but your post above is an even worse burn.

yeah, I want no part of it either...which is why I'm gonna get a job somewhere unrelated and start grad school pretty soon after law school's over.  Of all things, I might do something in sociology of law, which focuses on the societal effects of case holdings.

hey, fuck being a lawyer!  Join the RCMP!

(We have two former lawyers in my unit  :teehee )

But seriously, sorry to hear that you're going through all this even though you're still not really interested in the profession.  What area of law are you looking to practice upon graduation?

Corporate law--at least that's what I keep saying (I don't want to specialize in an area that might actually help someone), but I really have no idea.

I've taken just one elective through my first two years, meaning that I get to pick all my classes next year. yay. I'm actually meeting with the new associate Dean on Wednesday. Hopefully, she won't expect me to attend classes. That would really ruin my days (I don't even know what I do with my free time).

My meeting with the new associate dean went well. Afterward, she recommended that I visit career services to discuss my articling options. That didn't go well--at all. I'm basically fucked. I missed the deadline for placements by a few weeks for basically every city in Canada (apparently, I was never on the mailing list [all second year students were supposed to be on it] and was never alerted of any of the deadlines). Now I have to beg individual firms for a position or represent pig farmers in rural Manitoba or Saskatchewan.

:fbm at EB Law's tales of woe.

How are the job prospects for Lawyers with science backgrounds?  Just out of curiosity, I took the LSAT a couple of months ago and scored 163.  I applied to a couple of tier 2-3 schools with a mediocre personal statement but still received some scholarships.

My GPA was pretty lousy the way LSAC calculated it but I guess the Medical background compensated a little for it.

You scored a point higher.  :'(

Tier one or GTFO.

You'll definitely have an edge over other students, especially those with philosophy degrees. But the job market in the US is pretty bleak.

The market is pretty shitty in Winnipeg. Most of the big firms only hire the top 10% of the class. Great!

My dad's friend makes 500,000 to 600,000 a year at some firm that specializes in biotech patents.  That's why I was considering a career switch.  The medical profession is such a grind.  The minimum salary and 100% chance of being employed are great but the road is so damn long.

Is it still important to go Tier 1 if you have connections?  I was hoping to become a godson of that family friend and get a job with him.  I would definitely try to get a 170 if I applied for real.  All I did was study the logic games bible for two weeks and took one sample test before taking it the first time.  I already knew how to read fast from studying for the MCAT and I guess all the internet trolling give me a pretty solid logical reasoning foundation.

Anxiety feels bad man.  I hope you can find some way to get it under control.  Imo, psychiatric drugs alleviate the symptoms but don't solve the problem.  Also, the way psychiatric drugs work make it really hard to predict its effects on patients.  Sometimes, they could even make patients feel worse than before.

I'm in a similar position with my Engineering. I kinda dicked around for a bit and never properly registered with the professional orgs. and now I'm trying to go back and get all my experience documented to I can get my P.Eng and most of my supervisors don't work for the consulting companies (and one of those companies doesn't really exist anymore). They need meticulous records kept of your experience and I never did.

I'm basically well over a year unemployed and can't get my professional designation which excludes me from most of the jobs available in a weak market. I'm an EIT (Engineer in Training) and don't know if I'll have to start back at square one and reacquire another 4 years experience before I can get my P.Eng.

you have any experience with buspar (or the Azapirone class) SG? It sounds like it's works for anti-anxiety but doesn't come with the addiction or withdrawal symptoms that benzos have. This is a bit of a concern for me as I don't drink anymore after have a bit of a bendy elbow in the past.

What type of engineering and where are you looking to take the test?

Right now I split my time between New Hampshire and Nova Scotia. Alot of my experience is in Alberta so I'd probably register with a Canadian org. It's a bit messier in the states. There's really not "test" persay (other than an ethics exam that I don't think anyone really fails as long as you give it the min amount of study). Just submit your registration and it goes before them for review.

Oh, and Mechanical Engineering.

According to my wife your supervisors are required to stamp any work experience you did.  If they don't, go to the board and make a formal complaint.  The company existing doesn't matter anymore, as long you can find a PE with a stamp to certify your work experience.

It's more a problem of them being on the other side of the country and me not being able to track them down.  :(

It doesn't require stamping, just initialing of your work, what you learned how you applied eng. principles etc. into record that should be multiple pages per project/task (probably 10-20 pages total). It's really hard to do this retroactively :(
