what are the chances it will be this version?:

still looks awesome
Why in the hell would Gearbox want to use 3D Realms' antiquated source code? Or do you just mean "source materials"? I could see Gearbox maybe using a story outline and character designs, but you can bet that with the number of shipped titles Gearbox boasts (boasts!) they have a working pipeline and would have a harder time using 3D Realms' materials than just creating them from scratch.Source materials. I don't want Gearbox's Duke Nukem Forever, I want what was planned. The most recent trailer that was leaked right when it was cancelled was pure bad ass.
Just the number of scrape-and-burn restarts that team apparently suffered -- who outside the team would even know where to start, and what laid-off team member would even want to look at it again?
This is the only upcoming Duke Nukem product worth caring about:

Has anything else been shown on Duke Nukem Trilogy since 08?
Has anything else been shown on Duke Nukem Trilogy since 08? If not I'd consider that pretty much dead in the water.
2K Games is unveiling something big at PAX this year – and we want to share it with everyone – whether or not you are going to the show. We’ll be streaming the first day of PAX live from our booth and giving you exclusive access to everything we’re doing – and it’s going to be AWESOME. RSVP for the show now – and see you at 10 AM on Friday, September 3rd – live from PAX!
they need to do it up right, special edition with documentaries chronicling the weird story behind the game, anything playable from past incarnations, sketchbook, storyboards, etc.
nothing held back, criticisms where they are due
it's way too interesting a story to just let all that stuff blow away

about the last thing I ever expected to come out of this was an amicable agreement between 3DRealms and Take2.Money is money, and maybe after all these years someone has learned from their mistakes?
Holy crap, this is actually happening. Whatta year for unlikely shit.

Just watch it be an iPhone game.
Following the shutdown, the lawsuits began. The parties eventually settled their differences and have declined to discuss terms. As for who actually owns the intellectual property of “Duke Nukem Forever”–either 3D Realms or Take-Two Interactive—both declined to comment. However, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, says an announcement regarding the future of the IP would be made on Sunday at the company’s panel at the video game convention PAX 2010, which is being held in Seattle, Washington.http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2010/09/03/controversial-long-awaited-duke-nukem-forever-will-finally-be-released/
Pitchford actually worked on the “Duke Nukem 3D”, the precursor to “Duke Nukem Forever,” before leaving the company to start, along with others, Gearbox Software. Over the years Gearbox has made successful titles such as the “Brothers in Arms” series and the recent “Borderlands.”
According to Pitchford, Gearbox began finishing “Duke Nukem Forever” in late 2009. “Clearly the game hadn’t been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created,” he says. “The approach and investment and process at 3d Realms didn’t quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It’s the game it was meant to be.”
That means that the game will be a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D and will have both single player and multiplayer. “Aliens come and say they’re going to be our friends and Duke knows this isn’t going to work out,” Pitchford says. “Duke once again is in the pivotal spot and its up to him to save the world.”
The game is currently expected to ship in 2010 although given it’s history Pitchford is understandably reluctant to be more specific. “We’re in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill,” he says. “We need to get past the shock and awe and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan.”

Add my GT: ParticleREality and I'll be on in a bit.
I thought the PAX reveal choice was always kind of weird but it makes perfect sense. This is exactly the kind of audience that would go absolutely crazy for Duke Nukem and their announcement will be the talk of the show. Unlike at E3 where they'd have to compete with a bunch of other more higher profile games and be lost in the noise.
they'd have to compete with a bunch of other more higher profile games and be lost in the noise.
How can this ship in 2010? It's too late to start marketing it. Also, 3DR shut down earlier this year -- how the hell could you change devs and have something shippable anytime soon?
Duke will sell, even me a notorious :pirate will buy.
Duke ftw :bow2
As the first level came to its touching denouement, the camera pulled back to reveal that the giant alien fight was really just Duke playing a copy of Duke Nukem Forever. While recieving oral sex. From two women at once.
“What about the game, Duke? Was it good?” asked one.
“Yeah,” Duke replied. “But after 12 fuckin’ years, it had better be.”
I saw enough to reassure anyone worried that a developer change would take the edge off Duke’s greasy sexist charm. Perhaps the high point was the arrival of a building-size, grotesque green alien with three pendulous nude breasts.
“Yeah, I’d still hit it,” Duke growled.
Before getting hands-on time with Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford talked to us about how Gearbox became a part of the Duke saga. After some persuasion, Gearbox was offered the keys to the beleaguered game (it has existed in the ether in one form or another for over a decade) and Pitchford jumped at the chance. "To us, it felt like Duke can't die," said Pitchford. The Gearbox boss also related his wife's insistence that he take up Duke's cause and that if he succeeded in making it happen, she'd give him – and this a direct quote – a "Chilean Miner." She would "go down the shaft and stay 'til Christmas."

I'm gonna assume Chilean Miner means Randy gets to shove his cock in his wife's ass.
Yeah, after you beat that boss in DNF, it pans away to show that Duke is actually playing a video game while getting sucked off by two chicks at once.It sounds like the demo is made up of the leaks from last year...

It's a videogame called Duke Nukem. C'mon.
are they gonna make this console-only or will it still be on pc?
2K Games and Gearbox Software announced today that forever is nearly here, as Duke Nukem Forever® will officially make its long-awaited debut for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in calendar 2011.
The Gearbox-adopted shooter will launch worldwide on 6th May.
The US plays slightly earlier from 3rd May.
Confirmation comes from Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford and 2K president Cristoph Hartmann, who both outed the date to Game Informer magazine.
:bow 2011 :bow2

Wrong. Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Borderlands are all awesome, and yours is the first negative opinion I've heard of Halo PC.

yeah, but i want to hate on it
Honestly I don't even really view this as a Gearbox game. With the amount of time they've had it mostly sounds like polishing and finishing has been their task. I doubt there has been much redesigning going on here outside of tweaking.

I don't think we'll ever know until we get a post-mortem
(they're getting ~2years to develop this right?) Sounds more like they have the luxury of cherry picking what they liked, but reworking everything from various levels of completion and probably doing many bits from scratch. They probably had little to worry about on the creative side as far as leftover monster design and dick jokes go. I don't think Gearbox could've made a good DNF from scratch, but I'm not sure it should be underestimated the rework they'll have to do.
yeah I remember liking Halo PC. That SantaC comment confused me, it actually made me doubt my memories of the game. Like, "I'm sure Halo PC was pretty good, right?"
Its SantaC, people.
I sometimes forget the standard procedure, sorry.
While many Xboxers enjoyed playing through the game cooperatively with a friend, no such feature is offered on the PC version. I tend to be a bit more forgiving of this omission than some of the other editors around here, but it's still unfortunate that PC players won't have the same chance to take on the entire game alongside a buddy.

On top of that it had choppy performance and a horrible netcode. I remember playing this on the PC and said FUIT after just a few sessions. (as reflected on the average review scores compared to the xbox version)

Halo PC is indeed garbage. The console version shits on it.
Borderlands is pretty awesome so Gearbox has improved a ton.
That doesn't change that your bringing up a port from more than six years ago when Gearbox has far better examples of their development skill from within the past two years.

NO-ONE HERE ASKED FOR LOGIC, GRATE RUMBLAH! Leave your common sense at SantaC's front doorstep, where all other weapons must be checked.
:-*
As Stoney Mason said though, if this game wasn't called Duke Nukem, people probably wouldn't care as much.
Well, no duh, though. If a Zelda game wasn't called Zelda, people wouldn't care so much. If a Sonic game wasn't called Sonic it might not break a million copies sold. IP means something, both for the company and the consumer.
Point is that this game isn't from the devs of Duke Nukem. What if Quake or Doom was from someone else than id?
Then you'd get Quake 4
:'(
Yeah, what if there was a Metroid game that wasn't from Nintendo or Intelligent Systems? Or a Tomb Raider game that wasn't developed by CORE?
Then you'd get Quake 4
:'(
Metroid has always been under Nintendo's guidance in one form or another.
Despite the discontinuation of internal game development at 3D Realms, development of the game did not cease entirely. Nine ex-employees including key personnel like Allen Blum, continued game development throughout 2009 from their homes. These employees would later become Triptych Games, an independent studio that is currently housed in the same building as Gearbox and is collaborating with them on the project.
Is this game console only or is there gonna be a PC version?
Just to clarify my comment on people wouldn't care if it was called Duke Nukem is more related to that I don't think the game looks very good in my subjective opinion rather than who is making it.
It doesn't look like the caliber quality wise that would get most people excited except out of nostalgia. Which is why things like the Sonic franchise seem to hang on. Well that and lots of dumb kids when talking about Sonic.
The game may or may not turn out to be great. Hell I liked Prey for what it was even though most forum types hated that game.

:'(
Not sure what your point here is, Quake 4 was pretty sweet.
lol, people stopped playing Quake 4 online just a few months after release whereas people still play the old Quake games.
C'mon, Santa, you're better than a "popularity is proportional to quality" argument.
360 version superior? I thought this was coming out for PC too? Because if there's a master race PC version that would be superior over peasant pleb 360 version.

It's probably because even Duke plays the 360 version. I'm still getting the PC version.
Duke's VA just doesn't sound all that bad ass. He sounds like someone's dad trying to sound bad ass.
Everything about this is perfect.
That screenshot looks like it belongs to one of those 3D porn comics you see on 4chan. It looks awful but totally amazing as well. I wonder which build of Unreal Engine 3 this uses.
how can anyone with a straight face say this looks good? The footage looks like something from 5 years ago. Terrible textures. That's probably because a lot of the game was made 5 years ago. If Gearbox reworked everything from scratch for all the graphics whores then we'd be waiting another 1-2 years for it. They've taken it upon themselves as fans of Duke to finish it for the fans. If you come to play Duke Nukem for the graphics then you've come to play it for all the wrong reasons.

Prey was ID Tech 4.
Standing in the back room of a Las Vegas strip club -- which sounds far more seedy and sexy than it actually was -- Gearbox president Randy Pitchford detailed for us the once and future Duke Nukem Forever and how the studio's primary goal for the game is fulfilling the vision set forth by defunct developer 3D Realms.
"I bought the [Duke Nukem] brand," Pitchford said. "I'll have plenty of time to do my own thing and try to start over, take Duke in whatever direction I want." For now, he wants Forever to be what 3D Realms was working to finish after almost 14 years of development.
"What's important is that we get to play the game we've been waiting for all this time."
Pitchford suggested that it would be "incorrect" to take any credit away from 3D Realms' work; it is "their game" in his mind. He told us that toward the end of 3D Realms' life, the developer had "finally started to make a plan," so it was possible for Gearbox to pick up the pieces once responsibilities were transferred over.
When asked how much Gearbox retained of 3D Realms' work when it took the reins of production, Pitchford responded, "It's complicated. The 3D Realms guys were always working hard and there was always great stuff there. When they shut their doors, there was plenty of brilliant stuff all over the place." When we tried making comparisons for Pitchford to pick up on, he interjected, "There's no comparison. I've never seen anything like this and I doubt the industry ever will."
I wonder how long until after DNF do we hear about Duke Begins again. I don't think Gearbox ever stopped working on it and now that they are the franchise caretakers they can really do whatever the fuck they want with it.I bet its announced at E3 2012 and in stores Fall 2012.

25,000 are being made...seems like the kind of thing that'll sit on gamestop's shelves for a little while and get a pricedrop. There's a lot of internet hype for the game, but it could end up being another "Snakes on a Plane" where the internet hype doesn't translate to earth shattering sales.

I suspect the hype is based more on DNF as a curiosity and not necessarily an eagerness to purchase it. I, for one, am definitely not touching this until I get some reliable impressions on how it's turned out. Not for full price, anyway.

Day One.
Most people saying they wouldn't spend that coin on the greatest game to ever come out spend twice that much each week on Tentacle Rape bootleg DVDs.
Look at that ESRB rating, god damn this game has it all.
I just want to have the experience of going into Gamestop and saying, "Why yes I'm here to pick up my Balls of Steel Edition of Duke Nukem."

Not that I care about this particular game at all or whether there is quality difference between the 360 & the PS3 but they didn't mention any difference between the 360 and PS3 version of the game in the latest bombcast. They talked about a difference between the 360 and PC version of the game and said the 360 version was inferior to the PC version performance and graphics wise which theoretically you could say about any game ever made. Do you just sit around all day and make up shit to spin out of your ass?
but the PS3 version IS better than the 360 version ???
but the PS3 version IS better than the 360 version ???
Don't really give a shit. For all I know the PS 3 version could be the best version in the world (of what is probably going to be a really average game). You still suck as a troll because you can't even troll with any sort of shit to back up the shit you constantly toss out there. Maxy shames you.
Duke Nukem Forever’s “Capture the Babe” CTF variant requires you to abduct a woman to score. The mode is revealed in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine US where they explain that Gearbox will give the option to give her a “slap” if she “freaks out” as you drag her across the map.
WTF? Read on for the details and to hear Gearbox’s CEO’s attitude towards Duke’s controversy-bating elements.
Speaking to the magazine, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said: “Our goal isn’t to shock people, but I think there’s some stuff that’s a bit uncomfortable. I mean, the alien’s plan is to capture our women and impregnate them to breed an alien army, so you can imagine some horrible shit happens.”
OXM reports that Capture the Babe is “Pretty much what you’d expect to see from a CFT-style mode, with one small touch: the “Babe” will sometimes freak out while you’re carrying her (somewhat understandable we’d say) at which point you have to hit a button to gently give her a reassuring slap.”
yes because a soldier shooting another soldier on a battlefield is just like slapping a woman for laffs
seriously, guys?
I hate how easily offended people are these days. Jesus christ, what a bunch of god damn babies.
Thank God Duke Nukem is keeping it real. Pimp smack that ho to keep her in line.
YOU GIVE THE STRIPPERS MONEY AND THEN SHOOT THEM IN THE HEAD WHAT IS THIS COUNTRY COMING TO ARGHGGHGBLOW IT OUT YOUR ASS

One last delay, for old time's sake.
uh... you slap the butt. does PT think you slap them across the fivehead? you're as bad as Eric P sometimes. where did anyone think Duke Nukem would slap a bitch in the skull? :lol
Oy vey
In Japan Duke Nukem would be kidnapping twelve year olds and there wouldn't be any multiplayer to speak of, just spanking.
"hey, pal. what are you gonna do? save the world all by yourself"
FUCK YES MAXIMUM BONER MONTAGE
It would be badass if a week or two before DNF's launch, Gearbox was like "Oh by the way, we finished up the 2001 version of DNF on the UE1 engine and we're releasing it on XBLA/PSN/Steam for $10, kthxbye"

Nope. Already rated and ready to go.
the only bad thing about that trailer was the shitty music.
I really hope they use the classic Duke Nukem theme in the game:

I will cry if they don't use this tune in the game :(
they didn't use the the Terminator Theme in Terminator 3!

I wonder if they got him back to write more music for DNF?

3DRealms is gone. The only reason this is even coming out is because Gearbox took on the load of pulling everything together into a coherent game.
Yes, but PC master race and all that
Plus PC is where Duke was BORN. You can't erase the hundreds and thousands of hours running around custom maps in Duke3d from nostalgia. Duke = PC Hero. It would be like playing Half-life on a console.
why didn't you pre-order it for 360?
Wherever Duke was born, it doesnt matter.. everyone needs to buy this game. It's history, man.

:lol :lol
I’m sure that years of anticipation will spoil Duke Nukem Forever for some—there’s no getting around that at the end of that long road is only a good game and not an amazing one. It is what it is. He may not be at the top of his game, but even after all this time, Duke still knows how to party. 80/100
For the record are we blaming all this "tackyness" on Gearbox or 3D Realms?
Did Gearbox do anything but connect the dots? It sounds like this was mostly done.
Anyway I preordered it with 2 day shipping, fuck it. Maybe we can get some co op going at least.
This game is hard on Normal too. Fuck that load screen. God damn.
Terrible load times, gunplay and animation from 2001, ugly graphics... I am disappoint.
Watched the Quick Look, not entirely sold on this yet
:lol at buying this game (sorry Sceneman :-\) DON'T DO IT. Admittedly I haven't played through the game yet, but from what I have played it was pretty abysmal, the sections where you're just walking around a strip bar finding items and playing badly made minigames seemed more fun than the actual game
This will never stop being awesome.
I never get tired of hearing "I've got balls of steeeeel". Incredible

Redbox has games now?
I've never used redbox. Is it a buck to rent a game?
I'm stuck at duke dome. You are suposed to find batteries to power this mechanical crane thing, but uhh, I can't find them
Halp?
uh, just buy the game. Pir8 on PC if you must
I will only buy this game after they let me play the demo. It's the principle.
BUY IT. Game is awesome, I can't believe I'm playing Duke Nukem Forever. I was just learning how to masturbate when this game was first announced.
this should never have been a full priced title, instead it should have been released at budget price as a forewarning on how not to make a game, possibly accompanied by a public service documentary featuring a disenchanted George Broussard
I've always thought Gearbox is a shitty FPS developer and once DNF landed in their hands it was doomed.
Every once and a while you just gotta play through a kusoge.
Also that sounds more negative than I actually am on the game. I'm having fun with a smile on my face for much of it. And I'm ignoring all the quality "good games" I'm currently playing just to play this. Every once and a while you just gotta play through a kusoge.
they should fix up and release the 2001 version
Eh, I'd like to see a full story of what went down after Gearbox got a hold of the project. How long they had it, what changes to the gameplay they made, etc...I'm probably being more harsh to Gearbox than I should be because I got burned on Borderlands and because Gearbox's soon to be Generic Aliens FPS killed Obsidian's would've been awesome Aliens RPG. I never played the Brothers in Arms series and while Opposing Forces rocked, that was long long ago and they've used up any good karma from it with me.
Isn't the general consensus that the 2001 version never actually existed?
Bebpo got "burned" because he played Borderlands solo.... loooooooooooooool no friends looooser

SP should have been Borderlands without gun stats, so you could win by skill and not just needing a stronger gun.
I was under the impression that Sega realized they didn't have the finances to fully market 2 Aliens-based games, so they cancelled the rpg and stuck with generic marine shooter FPS because that is what sells in today's market.
“We’re confident that DNF will be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, game of 1998. And this confidence is not misplaced.” – Scott Miller, 1997
“Trust us, Duke Nukem Forever will rock when it comes out next year.” – Joe Siegler, 1999
“If DNF is not out in 2001, something’s very wrong.” – George Broussard, 2001
[Broussard] ripped out the ceiling of a room at the 3D Realms office to assemble a motion-capture lab, which would help his team in rendering “complex motions like strippers,” he noted on the 3D Realms Web site.
yeah I'm gonna collect all the ego shit before I do insane. I want to keep dying to a bare minimum. Those damn load screens. TBH that is the only problem I had with the game.

I don't even mind the load screens. I don't die that often. The problem is that you take a shitton of damage in a hurry, so if you aren't dying then you are huddled in a corner, blind, every two seconds like it's Killzone 2. That's not Duke Nukem. I'm thinking I'm just gonna knock down the difficulty and just blitz the game, go for the incidental cheevs and move on.
then they can release whatever video footage of the 2001 version exists as a kinect gameThat would be appropriate. It was just a video of set pieces, so you can play the .wmv on your xbox, and pretend to play while the Kinect pretends to accept your input.
This aliens parody section is annoying because it's too dark too see without duke vision but then the light sources like the rolling balls make it so you can't see with duke vision.
Finished the duke burger, at the GRAW section. Game surprisingly isn't that bad. Maybe it's because I don't play FPS much so I'm no FPS expert, but most of the time FPS games fall into 2 categories: AAA great and classic titles like Half-life, Halo, Bioshock, Crysis and then 7-8/10ish titles that are fun but have a lot of annoying parts due to balance or just the game being obtuse on letting the player know what they should do. DNF doesn't feel any worse than Resistance 2, FEAR, CoD3, Doom3, Quake 4, or any of the other b-tier fps games where you run through a bunch of set pieces and shoot a bunch of dudes.
Then again I thought Bioshock 2 was great and everyone said it sucks, so I guess I just have low standards for FPS and unless they are dog shit like Resistance 2 I'm not really going to hate them. I enjoying fighting off the enemy waves using the duke weapons and items and the locations are silly but decent. Some dumb game design decisions but nothing game breaking, just annoying for a section here and there. So far I'd give the game like a 7.5 or something.
The air hockey controls though...WOW, how did they think that was shippable.
Bitch, I play 1 fps a year. I am like your grandpa playing fps. I don't understand these bang bang shoot shoot games and their wacky game design.
That list accounts for xbl multiplayer only I think. The majority of people that bought DNF wouldnt have picked it up for the multiplayer.
theres some neat easter eggs in the kitchen section, if you stop to read the cans/jars lying around they often have some quite funny shit written on them.George Broussard has a real weird sense of humor...
eg. on tin of beans "airbriush your shorts with our heinous beans. you'll be splitting crowds in no time when your mud blowing bubble butt sends out a crescendo of brown notes"
lol
1000/1000Okay, where are all the ego caps?
Hail to the king, baby
You know, future Duke Nukem games would probably work better as monthly adventures for $5.
Duke Nukem isn't going to be funny again until the game becomes one big joke on Duke. Like he's some loser asshole that somehow saves the world and has this warped notion that the people around him think he's the greatest of all time. I get that Duke has had a resurgence in popularity thanks to Ventrilo Harassment but those jokes work because of the reaction to them, you can't take "Balls balls balls of steel" and think it'll be as funny.
Maybe this'll be funny.
I grew up playing Duke 3d and my sense of humor is largely unchanged from when I was 12 years old, so I still find Duke hilarious.
