Gearbox makes some serviceable stuff, and ships when they say they will.

The Flying Dutchman of the game development world turned out to have been caused by management screwing everything up in the name of staying ahead of the curve. It wouldn't surprise me if the exec prod turns out to have some kind of serious neurosis. Handing it off to Raven or Gearbox or even Demiurge 7 years ago, this might have kept the brand relevant.

As it stands, isn't it possible more people have played Borderlands than Duke?

there was a great and hella long breakdown of DNF's development cycle in Wired some months back.  Basically, none of the versions that were ever shown off, not even the really great for its time 2001 trailer were ever even near completion.  The game that 3D Realms was making before they finally ran out of cash was the furthest along any revision off the game had ever come, and would have likely have been ready for 2011.  Hell, we probably would have seen a passable demo/trailer/something out of it at this year's E3 if they hadn't pulled the plug.

If Gearbox has something to show so very soon would it be because they've picked up the project where it left off, or were they doing a Duke game parallel to 3DRealms?  I dunno.  I'd like to play DNF, but at this point more to see what a game that took about three times as long to make as the Sistine Chapel is like.

full article here. (http://www.wired.com/magazine/2009/12/fail_duke_nukem/)

I can see this happening. The suit was settled between 3D Realms and Take 2 last month with an undisclosed settlement. Take 2 and Gearbox are tight because of Borderlands now. I just hope they were able to get the source and can pick up where 3D Realms left off at.

Why in the hell would Gearbox want to use 3D Realms' antiquated source code? Or do you just mean "source materials"? I could see Gearbox maybe using a story outline and character designs, but you can bet that with the number of shipped titles Gearbox boasts (boasts!) they have a working pipeline and would have a harder time using 3D Realms' materials than just creating them from scratch.

Just the number of scrape-and-burn restarts that team apparently suffered -- who outside the team would even know where to start, and what laid-off team member would even want to look at it again?

Source materials. I don't want Gearbox's Duke Nukem Forever, I want what was planned. The most recent trailer that was leaked right when it was cancelled was pure bad ass.

I think Take Two is going to be streaming from their PAX booth this Friday as well.

It's pretty much all but confirmed at this point. And given Broussard's recent comments (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=23111402&postcount=112), I'd bet he's had a hand in the development as well.

they need to do it up right, special edition with documentaries chronicling the weird story behind the game, anything playable from past incarnations, sketchbook, storyboards, etc.

nothing held back, criticisms where they are due

it's way too interesting a story to just let all that stuff blow away

Totally.  If Duke Nukem Forever is just another video game, that would be lame.  It's like Prey.  Took a long ass time, finally came out, was an ok game, you forgot about it a day later other than Don't Fear the Reaper.  Duke Nukem Forever needs to be an event.

You need to put it in your 360 and it should flash a red ring to the Duke Nukem theme.  Then it deletes all your other save files and flashes titties on the screen.  If you have Kinect attached, it explodes and horribly scars your bitch ass for life.  It replaces all your Rock Band DLC with metal.  Scorched earth on everything that isn't related to Duke.

Following the shutdown, the lawsuits began. The parties eventually settled their differences and have declined to discuss terms. As for who actually owns the intellectual property of “Duke Nukem Forever”–either 3D Realms or Take-Two Interactive—both declined to comment. However, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, says an announcement regarding the future of the IP would be made on Sunday at the company’s panel at the video game convention PAX 2010, which is being held in Seattle, Washington.

Pitchford actually worked on the “Duke Nukem 3D”, the precursor to “Duke Nukem Forever,” before leaving the company to start, along with others, Gearbox Software. Over the years Gearbox has made successful titles such as the “Brothers in Arms” series and the recent “Borderlands.”

According to Pitchford, Gearbox began finishing “Duke Nukem Forever” in late 2009. “Clearly the game hadn’t been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created,” he says. “The approach and investment and process at 3d Realms didn’t quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It’s the game it was meant to be.”

That means that the game will be a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D and will have both single player and multiplayer. “Aliens come and say they’re going to be our friends and Duke knows this isn’t going to work out,” Pitchford says. “Duke once again is in the pivotal spot and its up to him to save the world.”

The game is currently expected to ship in 2010 although given it’s history Pitchford is understandably reluctant to be more specific. “We’re in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill,” he says. “We need to get past the shock and awe and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan.”

Microsoft doesn't even deserve this game.  Did you see that they called us hardcore gamers sweaty 30 year olds wearing metallica shirts?  And now you're going to support them on a key multiplatform title that the world is paying attention to?  Have some dignity. Send them a message by getting it for the PS3.  I'm not even wearing a metallica shirt, why would I be into that popular shit.  System of a Down is way better--shows how out of touch MS' PR people are.

I thought the PAX reveal choice was always kind of weird but it makes perfect sense. This is exactly the kind of audience that would go absolutely crazy for Duke Nukem and their announcement will be the talk of the show. Unlike at E3 where they'd have to compete with a bunch of other more higher profile games and be lost in the noise.

Pretty much.

I'm curious to see the trailer they will release later.

As the first level came to its touching denouement, the camera pulled back to reveal that the giant alien fight was really just Duke playing a copy of Duke Nukem Forever. While recieving oral sex. From two women at once.

“What about the game, Duke? Was it good?” asked one.

Wired got to briefly play the demo behind closed doors. I love it. Operation: Cock Block

I saw enough to reassure anyone worried that a developer change would take the edge off Duke’s greasy sexist charm. Perhaps the high point was the arrival of a building-size, grotesque green alien with three pendulous nude breasts.

“Yeah, I’d still hit it,” Duke growled.

Before getting hands-on time with Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford talked to us about how Gearbox became a part of the Duke saga. After some persuasion, Gearbox was offered the keys to the beleaguered game (it has existed in the ether in one form or another for over a decade) and Pitchford jumped at the chance. "To us, it felt like Duke can't die," said Pitchford. The Gearbox boss also related his wife's insistence that he take up Duke's cause and that if he succeeded in making it happen, she'd give him – and this a direct quote – a "Chilean Miner." She would "go down the shaft and stay 'til Christmas."

Yeah, an ex-3DR employee has been blogging up a storm (http://talkinrealatyou.blogspot.com/) about how almost all of the work on the DNF PAX demo was done by 3DR and Triptych.

At least DNF is going to wind up being the game it was always meant to be, regardless of who takes credit for it. :rock

Whats funny are the people saying "oh, Gearbox has picked this up. The game should actually be funny now." (a lot of people on other boards are saying this). WTF?

I don't think Brothers in Arms was funny, Borderlands was sure as shit painfully unfunny. I mean I like Borderlands, and the first time you fight a midget youre like "alright that was OK". But then you fight tons of those guys and... yeah. They're not funny. Is "Scooter" meant to be funny? Because he's a redneck? And Dr. Ned, who has "nothing to do with Dr. Zed from the last story." HAHAHAHAAHAHA THATS SO FUNNY

Even Deathspank is funnier that Borderlands

Stfu Randy and show us the game ffs. Good to see it in a decent resolution but it'd be good to see more interesting, telling gameplay not a crappy boss battle. Was a crappy boss in Duke 3D, looks crappy in DNF. Still looks good visually though, I don't see what the negative nerds at PAX were on about.

Honestly I don't even really view this as a Gearbox game. With the amount of time they've had it mostly sounds like polishing and finishing has been their task. I doubt there has been much redesigning going on here outside of tweaking.

I don't think we'll ever know until we get a post-mortem

(they're getting ~2years to develop this right?) Sounds more like they have the luxury of cherry picking what they liked, but reworking everything from various levels of completion and probably doing many bits from scratch. They probably had little to worry about on the creative side as far as leftover monster design and dick jokes go. I don't think Gearbox could've made a good DNF from scratch, but I'm not sure it should be underestimated the rework they'll have to do.

It's hard to say how much time Gearbox has been working on it, but it's probably closer to one year than two.

Make fun of me all you want, but some people here seems to have pretty bad memory:

Quote from: IGN
While many Xboxers enjoyed playing through the game cooperatively with a friend, no such feature is offered on the PC version. I tend to be a bit more forgiving of this omission than some of the other editors around here, but it's still unfortunate that PC players won't have the same chance to take on the entire game alongside a buddy.

On top of that it had choppy performance and a horrible netcode. I remember playing this on the PC and said FUIT after just a few sessions. (as reflected on the average review scores compared to the xbox version)

I do remember that performance of Halo PC dropped quite a bit when the first Flood level began and a pretty beef PC was needed to keep playing with high settings from that point on.

That doesn't change that your bringing up a port from more than six years ago when Gearbox has far better examples of their development skill from within the past two years.

Well, no duh, though.  If a Zelda game wasn't called Zelda, people wouldn't care so much.  If a Sonic game wasn't called Sonic it might not break a million copies sold.  IP means something, both for the company and the consumer.

Point is that this game isn't from the devs of Duke Nukem. What if Quake or Doom was from someone else than id?

Despite the discontinuation of internal game development at 3D Realms, development of the game did not cease entirely. Nine ex-employees including key personnel like Allen Blum, continued game development throughout 2009 from their homes. These employees would later become Triptych Games, an independent studio that is currently housed in the same building as Gearbox and is collaborating with them on the project.

Just to clarify my comment on people wouldn't care if it was called Duke Nukem is more related to that I don't think the game looks very good in my subjective opinion rather than who is making it.

It doesn't look like the caliber quality wise that would get most people excited except out of nostalgia. Which is why things like the Sonic franchise seem to hang on. Well that and lots of dumb kids when talking about Sonic.

The game may or may not turn out to be great. Hell I liked Prey for what it was even though most forum types hated that game.

It'd probably be wrong if this ode to B-movies was somehow a AAA game.

As far as mechanics go, basic competency is the bar most are looking for. We're in it for the shamelessness.

C'mon, Santa, you're better than a "popularity is proportional to quality" argument.

But that's basically the case with any competitive game.

If SF4 was shit everyone would go back to Third Strike. Same with VF, same with KOF, same with Unreal Tournament, same with anything. Of course it only works on a by-series basis. If Tekken 6 was bad everyone wouldn't switch over to VF... they'd go back to T5DR.

Quake 4 was shit.

That screenshot looks like it belongs to one of those 3D porn comics you see on 4chan. It looks awful but totally amazing as well. I wonder which build of Unreal Engine 3 this uses.

It looks a little older than the current Unreal 3 stuff. Maybe Prey-era?

That's probably because a lot of the game was made 5 years ago. If Gearbox reworked everything from scratch for all the graphics whores then we'd be waiting another 1-2 years for it. They've taken it upon themselves as fans of Duke to finish it for the fans. If you come to play Duke Nukem for the graphics then you've come to play it for all the wrong reasons.

how can anyone with a straight face say this looks good? The footage looks like something from 5 years ago. Terrible textures.

No one is saying it looks good in the graphics department. It doesn't. It looks very poor relative to modern games. Most people are responding to the silliness/attitude of the screenshots or are in the nostagia group I would guess.

Prey was ID Tech 4.

Shit, you're right. Sorry. It does look way more ID Tech than Unreal, though. The skin textures and such.

Also, this is excellent news:

Duke Nukem Forever being completed as 3D Realms envisioned (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/duke-nukem-forever-being-completed-as-3d-realms-envisioned/)
Quote
Standing in the back room of a Las Vegas strip club -- which sounds far more seedy and sexy than it actually was -- Gearbox president Randy Pitchford detailed for us the once and future Duke Nukem Forever and how the studio's primary goal for the game is fulfilling the vision set forth by defunct developer 3D Realms.

"I bought the [Duke Nukem] brand," Pitchford said. "I'll have plenty of time to do my own thing and try to start over, take Duke in whatever direction I want." For now, he wants Forever to be what 3D Realms was working to finish after almost 14 years of development.

"What's important is that we get to play the game we've been waiting for all this time."

Pitchford suggested that it would be "incorrect" to take any credit away from 3D Realms' work; it is "their game" in his mind. He told us that toward the end of 3D Realms' life, the developer had "finally started to make a plan," so it was possible for Gearbox to pick up the pieces once responsibilities were transferred over.

When asked how much Gearbox retained of 3D Realms' work when it took the reins of production, Pitchford responded, "It's complicated. The 3D Realms guys were always working hard and there was always great stuff there. When they shut their doors, there was plenty of brilliant stuff all over the place." When we tried making comparisons for Pitchford to pick up on, he interjected, "There's no comparison. I've never seen anything like this and I doubt the industry ever will."

No word on any sort of special edition yet. Guess we'll just have to be happy that the game is coming out.

Watched the trailer again to get pumped. "Damn, why do they always take the hot ones!" LMFAO cant wait for this. Only 3 months away :hyper

I wonder how long until after DNF do we hear about Duke Begins again. I don't think Gearbox ever stopped working on it and now that they are the franchise caretakers they can really do whatever the fuck they want with it.
I bet its announced at E3 2012 and in stores Fall 2012.

25,000 are being made...seems like the kind of thing that'll sit on gamestop's shelves for a little while and get a pricedrop. There's a lot of internet hype for the game, but it could end up being another "Snakes on a Plane" where the internet hype doesn't translate to earth shattering sales.

I suspect the hype is based more on DNF as a curiosity and not necessarily an eagerness to purchase it.  I, for one, am definitely not touching this until I get some reliable impressions on how it's turned out.  Not for full price, anyway.

I'm eager to purchase it. It's Duke Nukem Forever. I don't care if it's the worst game this year, the fact that this is even coming out after FOURTEEN years of development is simply mind-blowing. Sure I'll be disappointed if it turns out shitty, but I'll be proud of Gearbox for finally getting this thing out. I'll just have to remember to set my brain to "8 years old in the 90s" when I boot this up.

Not that I care about this particular game at all or whether there is quality difference between the 360 & the PS3 but they didn't mention any difference between the 360 and PS3 version of the game in the latest bombcast. They talked about a difference between the 360 and PC version of the game and said the 360 version was inferior to the PC version performance and graphics wise which theoretically you could say about any game ever made. Of course the game will be better on PC, more powerful hardware, better graphical performance, duh. 360 and PS3 versions will be more or less identical, as with Gearbox's other multi-plat titles.

I will be getting the 360 version as thats the console I prefer to game on. So what.

Quote
Duke Nukem Forever’s “Capture the Babe” CTF variant requires you to abduct a woman to score. The mode is revealed in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine US where they explain that Gearbox will give the option to give her a “slap” if she “freaks out” as you drag her across the map.

WTF? Read on for the details and to hear Gearbox’s CEO’s attitude towards Duke’s controversy-bating elements.

Speaking to the magazine, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said: “Our goal isn’t to shock people, but I think there’s some stuff that’s a bit uncomfortable. I mean, the alien’s plan is to capture our women and impregnate them to breed an alien army, so you can imagine some horrible shit happens.”

OXM reports that Capture the Babe is “Pretty much what you’d expect to see from a CFT-style mode, with one small touch: the “Babe” will sometimes freak out while you’re carrying her (somewhat understandable we’d say) at which point you have to hit a button to gently give her a reassuring slap.”

I don't really feel comfortable telling people how they should overly feel about certain things because we all have our individual line of what is acceptable and what isn't. Especially in imaginery video game land.

If somebody is upset about the Duke thing I understand. If somebody was upset about the MW 2 thing I understand. Neither bothered me. But that's because I view them in a certain context. The same way I viewed a game like Manhunt or any of the thousands of morally reprehensible things that people do in videogames and never bat an eye.

true, there's so much more out there that's harmful that this is just another drop in the bucket.  however it never fails to annoy me when someone dismisses the complaints of another, especially when the former is speaking from a privileged position

Thank God Duke Nukem is keeping it real. Pimp smack that ho to keep her in line.

qft. Gaming is far too PC these days. I'm so glad Duke is BACK

I am of the belief that you never pay day 1 prices for PC games because they drop to $15 in 6-12 months.  The only games I pay full price for are Obisdian and Valve games because I love those guys.  I'd pay day 1 for Blizzard games too but I don't play their games.

BUT

I just pre-ordered Duke

I have to be there.  After all these years.  It's like an event.  Like Star Wars Ep1.  Can't miss this.  I'm hyped!!

Plus PC is where Duke was BORN.  You can't erase the hundreds and thousands of hours running around custom maps in Duke3d from nostalgia.  Duke = PC Hero.  It would be like playing Half-life on a console.

I played HL1 on ps2, HL2 on xbox, HL2 on 360, HL2 on pc, Portal 1 on 360, Portal 1 on pc and Portal 2 on 360, TF2 on 360 and on pc. All the rest of the Valve games on pc.

And honestly, Valve games are just as good on a non-pc system. I know this goes against the grain of pc master race, which is awesome as even I own a gaming pc, but playing fps on consoles is pretty standard affair these days, as seen by the developers using even 360 pads to demo Duke at events.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem Forever - best achievement list of 2011

Half Life 2 in particular is perfectly fine on console. I upgraded my PC in 2004 JUST for HL2 (and Doom 3), and I played through it several times on the PC before getting it with the Orange Box on 360, and really there is barely any difference between each platform. If HL were a fast twitch shooter like Quake or UT, then yeah, PC all the way. But it's a slow, scripted single player FPS, so it's a perfect fit for console.

yeah, especially since theres no multiplayer achievements  ;)

I'll give the multi a quick whirl once I get 1000, it looks quite fun from the trailers they've shown.

Hmmm but if theres a DLC pack planned that will likely add some multi achievements. Being the completionist I am that'll make me bite

That hat has a beer opener on it. That's perfect.

I'm kinda thinking about getting the Duke Nukem video card bundle. Shit is mad expensive tho.

I wonder about the functionality of that beer opener. Will you be able to use it while the hat is your head? I generally just use a lighter to open beers if I'm at a party or some shit

fragzone (who has been around since 1996) has reviewed DNF, got a score 2/5 and basically says the game is crap for todays standards.

In their review, they have the trailers back in 1998 and 2001, man that is nostalgia.

.. In actual bad taste. Pig Cops getting decapitated by shotguns and so-on is 'ok' considering they are enemies willing fully engaged in combat against the player, but.. Dated porned-up versions of actresses we all saw as kids on tv and implied alien rape is kinda eh.. Tacky.

I mean, we had the same thing in DNF, girls all goo'ed up, and you could even put them out of their misery because they asked, but i don't know.. The DNF sequence feels super awkward and lame.

Title: Re: Duke Nukem Forever - the MegaThread ~ release imminent
Post by: The Sceneman on June 12, 2011, 10:13:33 AM
yeah I did think they crossed a line there. It wasn't funny at all, just gross.

Well the game is pretty sweet overall, but it sucks that my cruddy old xbox really doesnt like it. Works fine on quietID's box, but load times are still abysmal. Still, I'm getting better at the game so I'm dying less. Game is quite hard on hard, and there is still insane mode to unlock!

'Collectibles' are done well in this game. You get permanent health boosts for interacting with stuff, like bench pressing weights, playing pinball etc. It's fun hunting these things down.

You can really tell this game was designed years ago, but if this came out around 2004 or so a lot of the set pieces would have been pretty imnpressive.

I went from loving the game for the first 30 mins, to really being not sure about it, to loving it again. It's a worthy enough successor to Duke 3d.

beat the game on hard :rock

the game actually got EASIER later on as you get permanent health boosts.

Fucking sweet game, its essentially a poor mans Half Life 2 mixed with a poor mans Halo CE, but its friggn hilarious and theres some cool levels and set pieces. A worthy return of Duke.

The ending is one of the best I've ever seen. My jaw hit the floor due to it's awesomeness.

Only flaw (well opposed to the 'dated' graphics and gameplay but that aint a flaw IMO) is the crippling load times on 360. Seriously they are some of the worst I've encountered.

I really hope Gearbox does something with the Duke franchise. They could make a solid new game if they built one from scratch.

I'd much rather play another DNF than another zzzzzz Medals of Duty game. this decade needs Duke.

awesome.

I take it you're gonna play on hard off the bat?

tips:

- try and track down as much ego boosting shit asap. Minigames and collectibles and shit give you permanent health boosts. You want to die as little as possible because otherwise you "suck it down" with another 40 second loading screen.

- there is an achievement for not swapping the gold pistol you get at the start of the game. So don't swap it out as you don't want to be doing that shit on Insane. I just got the cheev on my first hard run so it's not too bad. The pistol is a decent weapon against the pigs.

- when you unlock Insane difficulty DONT select "start new campaign" for your insane run. If you start your run via the level select screen you get to keep your Ego health bar from your previous run. Starting a new campaign erases all your collectible progress too.

I'm just gonna mop up the collectibles and other achievements and max out my health bar, then blast through on Insane for my 1000. Then I'm selling this and buying Child of Eden

nice, I just used the top left flipper w/ tilt trick. Get a multiplier then just keep the ball in the top left of the table and hit those three panels that keep popping up. If you use the tilt and hold the flipper up you can keep the ball up there for as long as you need to.

I dont know what to think of this game now that I own it. Some weapons are strangely underpowered -- the ripper feels useless, and looks weird. The ennemies also look strange. PigCops are just giant brutes now, and are not threatening at all; the cool tigerstripped aliens with teleporter are darkish and teleport around way too fast and too much.

Also, the damage system is bizzare - you step into fire; 1/3 of your ego bar is left, you take 2-3 blasts to the face.. 1/3 is gone.. It's very incoherent. The game also has the worse first hour of a videogame ever. You spend too much time using hand to hand combat, crawling ducts, and so on. What the hell was that?

The casino level was omgwtfzzzz boring too.

It feels like a solid 6/10 game so far. Crysis 2 felt better. It's not insulting, it plays fine, but it really does feel like I bought an old game from GoG or something. It's really a throwback.

I'd say its worth buying if you were a fan of the original. If you never played DN3D, don't bother.

DNF feels like meeting up with a friend that was really cool in highschool that you havent seen since, and you realise that the guy never matured and is trying to awkwardly adapt to modern fashion and whats hot; but when you meet him, he's decked out in emo gears and hair and keeps talking about Highschool memories, at the age of 35

Because that demo certainly isn't going to make you run down to the store and drop $60 dollars on it. It's probably the least useful demo in the world ever in that sense.

this should never have been a full priced title, instead it should have been released at budget price as a forewarning on how not to make a game, possibly accompanied by a public service documentary featuring a disenchanted George Broussard

it's sad that DNF pokes fun at other, better fps games like Halo and Half-Life 2, yet its whole design ethos seems to be based on burrowing traits from those franchises and half-heartedly throwing them into the melting pot-- nothing done that is new, nothing done that hasn't been done better already 6-10 years ago.

also, is it intentionally supposed to be this unfunny? the humour is uniformly terrible.

That's the real issue and that's why its getting a bit kicked in reviews. When I tried it out my initial thought unprompted was, this feels like an XBLA title. And not like a perfect XBLA game. But one of those ones with issues where even if you like it, you wait for a sale.

Now I get why selling it at XBLA prices is completely impossible both because of size and the budget this game had over the years, but when you sell it at $60 instead of maybe $40 you lose a lot of the goodwill you had by finally bringing this saga to conclusion.

Title: Re: Duke Nukem Forever - the Thread ~ Sceneman says game owns, distinguished mentally-challenged fellows beg to differ
Post by: Stoney Mason on June 17, 2011, 12:38:53 AM
Where I disagree with a lot of the reviews is that they deem this now to be a dead license. I don't agree with that. A good shooter is fundamentally tight action and good combat. And while that's harder than it sounds, fix that and that's like 75% of the battle.
The other bit is yeah, the license currently for a modern audience doesn't feel right because the generation that plays games now didn't grow up with Stallone and Schwarzenegger.

There are a couple of approaches you could take. Reboot him. Go back to before who he was and take the hero's journey. Educate the audience and make him relevant to a modern audience. Or you could go post modern with him. Where everybody realizes he is this weird anachronism and maybe even thinks he's this out of step loser and wants him gone but you rebuild his character by the fact that he really is the only guy left who can do what needs to be done. In Army of Darkness Bruce Campbell's character is considered a loser by the other people for the most part. His confidence is mostly fake bravado and the hero's journey he makes by the end. I mean there are a number of ways you could go with it when Gearbox makes the next one. But first they have to fix the combat. And then they have to sort of decide how to expand the character beyond people who played the game 20 years ago.

I'm about 2 hours in and it's alright.  The gameplay is kind of bad (wish it was easier so I could just blow through it and play it for the lolz; you take so much damage so quickly), but it's silly enough to be fun.  Not that I expected any different with Gearbox putting it all together though, I've always thought Gearbox is a shitty FPS developer and once DNF landed in their hands it was doomed.  But at least this time they have a lololol license to make it a so bad it's almost good game.  The keyword is "almost".

Dunno if it was worth $45, probably was just to see it after all these years and to see that leaked script brought to life.  Seems entertaining enough to finish.  I gotta say though, the leaked script from last year was a much better way to experience this than actually seeing it brought to life.  I think I'd just recommend the script to others instead of the game.

Also that sounds more negative than I actually am on the game.  I'm having fun with a smile on my face for much of it.  And I'm ignoring all the quality "good games" I'm currently playing just to play this.  Every once and a while you just gotta play through a kusoge.

I dunno, you really don't think things like damage/weapon balancing was done by Gearbox?  It feels a lot like their other FPS in a way I really do not like.  Same with the overall pace of moving through the scripted levels.  The levels themselves aren't bad, but the pace just feels slow as molasses.  This is all final end of product tweaking stuff and that's why I associate a lot of these issues with Gearbox.

I guess since I feel Borderlands shares most of these same issues I just associate it with Gearbox.

This game was a broken mess sitting in pieces. It was always going to be what it is. In the time given them from Take 2, all they most likely did was stitch it together. Add some shaders. Make sure it didn't crash every 30 seconds. And push it out the door for their eventual game. When the next Gearbox Duke game comes you can blame them or credit them with the quality of that. But this is a broken decade long expedition of a game. It seems silly to blame the dudes who rescued it from the shitpile for the state of said shitpile.

Eh, I'd like to see a full story of what went down after Gearbox got a hold of the project.  How long they had it, what changes to the gameplay they made, etc...I'm probably being more harsh to Gearbox than I should be because I got burned on Borderlands and because Gearbox's soon to be Generic Aliens FPS killed Obsidian's would've been awesome Aliens RPG.  I never played the Brothers in Arms series and while Opposing Forces rocked, that was long long ago and they've used up any good karma from it with me.

it gets worse the further you get in. Once you get over the 'holy crap, I'm playing DNF' phase, there isn't much to get excited about.

This is a game who's biggest innovation is shrink levels, and even then that was inspired by CounterStrike kitchen map. Nah, the fact that it came out at all is its biggest accomplishment.

edit: concur with Stoney, this would've garnered a lot more goodwill had bit come out as a $15 xbla title.

they should fix up and release the 2001 version

see, this duke nukem forever isn't what I think when I think duke nukem forever.  If there are distinct versions of the game, from 1998 to 2001 to this modern one, the DNF I wanted was the 2001 one.  That looked like it was to Half Life as Duke 3D was to Doom.  Just everything cool about what it was deriving from, but make even more fucking awesome.

they should fix up and release the 2001 version

Isn't the general consensus that the 2001 version never actually existed?

Eh, I'd like to see a full story of what went down after Gearbox got a hold of the project.  How long they had it, what changes to the gameplay they made, etc...I'm probably being more harsh to Gearbox than I should be because I got burned on Borderlands and because Gearbox's soon to be Generic Aliens FPS killed Obsidian's would've been awesome Aliens RPG.  I never played the Brothers in Arms series and while Opposing Forces rocked, that was long long ago and they've used up any good karma from it with me.

Wait, you hate Gearbox because:

-You got "burned" on Borderlands [sorry, bebpo, Borderlands was a fun game]
-Because they're making a new Aliens games and Obsidian isn't [which probably has more to do with Obsidian being Obsidian than anything Gearbox did, and I happen to LOVE Obsidian]

Even though you:

-Haven't played their Brothers in Arms series
-And loved Opposing Force

That's the thing. I don't think there was ever really a version of this game that was complete enough to release and say here is a game. There were always probably levels and half levels but nothing that actually existed as a "real" game in the sense of something that you could sell.

I think they kept scrambling and reacting to market trends and engine updates and it was just chasing ghosts. It's easy to put together a kick ass trailer. But that's not a game.

If you're selling a game with a solo campaign, than it better be good in both solo play and multi.  Borderlands solo was more like Boringlands.  Grind grind grind grind grind.  SP should have been Borderlands without gun stats, so you could win by skill and not just needing a stronger gun.

I was under the impression that Sega realized they didn't have the finances to fully market 2 Aliens-based games, so they cancelled the rpg and stuck with generic marine shooter FPS because that is what sells in today's market.

They actually had three Aliens games in development at the time [Obsidian's RPG, Gearbox's Colonial Marines, and Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator]. From what I've read, it seems like Sega snubbed the first two to focus on the Rebellion's efforts [perhaps in the hopes of capitalizing on the movie franchise].

All these statements are true:

“We’re confident that DNF will be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, game of 1998. And this confidence is not misplaced.” – Scott Miller, 1997

“Trust us, Duke Nukem Forever will rock when it comes out next year.” – Joe Siegler, 1999

“If DNF is not out in 2001, something’s very wrong.” – George Broussard, 2001

i think they could do cool things with the character, similar to what gerstmann said, by going the "what happens when you stop being in on the joke and become the joke?" route

like, in his mind, duke is walking around with money falling out of his ass, everyone adores him, and all the ladies giggle while biting their lower lips at all his sexual innuendo - then you'd get brief flashes of reality where he's some brokeass highway worker, everyone is repulsed by his attitude and laughs at his ridiculous clothing, and instead of "what're you doing later besides ME, stud?" they're really saying "go fuck yourself, asshole."

and by the end of the game, after saving the world, he'd really BE that guy, with women falling all over him and kids wanting autographs and guys having homoerotic fantasies about him - but the joke would be that he'd start seeing things as they were at the beginning of the game, like the chicks just want to fuck him so they can release a ppv sex vid and make money or the kid wants to sell the autographed photo on ebay - the realization that once you reach the top, there's nowhere to go but down

yeah I'm gonna collect all the ego shit before I do insane. I want to keep dying to a bare minimum. Those damn load screens. TBH that is the only problem I had with the game.

I don't even mind the load screens. I don't die that often. The problem is that you take a shitton of damage in a hurry, so if you aren't dying then you are huddled in a corner, blind, every two seconds like it's Killzone 2. That's not Duke Nukem. I'm thinking I'm just gonna knock down the difficulty and just blitz the game, go for the incidental cheevs and move on.

Now I'm in a construction yard. I have to travel across a suspended cargo container to get to another set of scaffolding. I shoot the barrels in it to clear the way. i go in. Checkpoint. I cannot walk through the container. 2/3rds through it there is an invisible wall that I cannot walk through. So I have to load the fucking checkpoint to pass through.

I do so, there is a room with a blinking orange thing and a rocket launcher. I go to the blinking thing first. Oops a space ship immediately appears and blows me off the platform before I get the rocket launcher, so now I have no way to destroy the space ship, so now I have to reload the fucking checkpoint again.

Again I ask what 'smoothing over' was done after 3DR stopped working on this.

That fight is also the second one in this level that requires you to keep running to an ammo refill crate that is right out in the open and causes you to lose all your health and have to go hide like a bitch again. How about you give me more than 5 rockets at a time like in Duke 3D?

Back in 10 minutes, now I get to figure out where to plug in this stupid fucking battery so I can fight 3 more guys and then face another puzzle.

I don't think the difficulties mean much.  I'm playing on the lowest difficulty and you still drop to 1 hit until death when you get hit once and have to hide and regen or drink beer beforehand.  It's really really shitty damage balancing.  I don't get who thinks this is fun.  Feels more like trying to extend game length by making it so people can't just blow through it.  Which is balls.

The GhostTown level is how the game should had been. The action was super intense, tons of cool firefights while using the scenery, finding ammo and bombs inside the old houses.. This kind of non-stop action is what the entire game needed.

Finished the duke burger, at the GRAW section.  Game surprisingly isn't that bad.  Maybe it's because I don't play FPS much so I'm no FPS expert, but most of the time FPS games fall into 2 categories: AAA great and classic titles like Half-life, Halo, Bioshock, Crysis and then 7-8/10ish titles that are fun but have a lot of annoying parts due to balance or just the game being obtuse on letting the player know what they should do.  DNF doesn't feel any worse than Resistance 2, FEAR, CoD3, Doom3, Quake 4, or any of the other b-tier fps games where you run through a bunch of set pieces and shoot a bunch of dudes.

Then again I thought Bioshock 2 was great and everyone said it sucks, so I guess I just have low standards for FPS and unless they are dog shit like Resistance 2 I'm not really going to hate them.  I enjoying fighting off the enemy waves using the duke weapons and items and the locations are silly but decent.  Some dumb game design decisions but nothing game breaking, just annoying for a section here and there.  So far I'd give the game like a 7.5 or something.

The air hockey controls though...WOW, how did they think that was shippable.

I'd say it's a bit under the B-tier, in the Dark Sector sort of area where you should get it for $15 or so. If it weren't for the glitches and bad pacing it'd be better.

-Duke Burger
-Strip Joint
-Casino was ok

the only thing that pissed me off boss-wise in this was the Queen Bitch. When you get her health down, her giant flashing claw-hand flops on the side near you. So naturally I'm thinking I got do something with it. Cue me running up to it seeing if there was a context sensitive action button i needed to press, or maybe try to damage it when it was flashing -- none of that worked. So after I died like five times, I head over to youtube to see what I'm missing, and d'ya know what? I needed to run up to the damn thing head and press a button. I'm like I didn't even know I could reach that ledge fuuuuuu....

After that cathartic battle, I realised I wasn't playing any old crap shooter. I was playing a crap shooter from 8 years ago. Apart from that, the game was piss easy. The last battle was joke, though perhaps that was fitting.

Postscript: I gotta say I enjoyed jumping about as shrunken Duke in the kitchen area the most. It reminded me of jumping about the kitchen map in CounterStrike. So the best bit of this game for me was when it made me recall a previous gaming memory from a different game ages ago. Feels like the whole time playing it the game was telling me "Hey, look at all these other games we're riffing on, d'ya gettit?", reminding me that I'd rather be playing those other games.

I liked the Kitchen platforming and the part where you had to lure the big guys into the shrink things and then kill them when small.  Also enjoyed stepping on the guys when you were large.

I didn't care for the shrink section in the casino where they got lazy and made you go through the area shrunk, then turn around and go back through it again normal size.  Boring re-use.

Probably my favorite bit of combat was when you were in the trailer in the construction yard and fighting enemies through the windows before they tip it over and you have to fight face to face.

theres some neat easter eggs in the kitchen section, if you stop to read the cans/jars lying around they often have some quite funny shit written on them.

eg. on tin of beans "airbriush your shorts with our heinous beans. you'll be splitting crowds in no time when your mud blowing bubble butt sends out a crescendo of brown notes"

lol

Finished it.

Honestly, I guess I just am easy reviewer for FPS because I thought it was fine.  I enjoyed the combat and the last few hours of the game had lots of good combat with a solid variety in level design.  I think the monster truck section sucks and the hive section is hard to see (I actually wish they ditched DUKE VISION completely and just made the game light enough to freaking see the whole time), but that's only about 1/4th the game and the other 3/4ths were enjoyable B-tier fps.  It's one of those games you can pick up for $10-20 and play over a weekend and have some fun.  Has some good extras too after you beat the game.

Now that being said, I tried the multiplayer for a half hour and holy crap was that terrible.  I dunno if it was because of the lag or because the second you spawn you get 1 hit shott'd to death all the time, but it was really really bad.  Also controlled terribly.  And I did the map where they tried to remake the first level from Duke3d and while that's cute, it just showed how much worse this MP plays.

Also after watching all the trailers from DNF over the years, it seems like every version up until 2003 was way more awesome than the game we got.  Just the scenarios look far more involved, varied, and exciting.  DNF is less of a bad game, and rather just a disappointment that it didn't live up to any of the trailers in the slightest.  It's a 7/10ish FPS, and not total shit or anything outside a few sections and the MP, but the history of it demanded a better game.

I'd still play another Duke game (which I'm sure they'll make since the sales of DNF are going to be huge) but it'd have to be much, much, muuuuch better than this.

a very fair review. Just calling the game outright shit (which a lot of people are doing) is pretty inaccurate

You sure this game is selling huge? It debuted at number 20 in the XBL most played list.

That list accounts for xbl multiplayer only I think. The majority of people that bought DNF wouldnt have picked it up for the multiplayer.

It's anyone who was signed into XBL and booted the game once in the last week.

lol, in that case the game probably tanked! It will be interesting seeing the figures. I was hoping for a new Gearbox Duke Nukem game.

I think there will definitely be a new Duke. It's also possible that the average gamer is not as critical as message board junkies and doesn't realize how iffy this game is.

It tallies up anyone who is playing the game period, per unique ID (gamertag) - it could be rentals, purchases, etc.

A friend and I rented it for a day figuring we'd get some mindless fun or at least a nostalgic laugh.  Well we didn't get many laughs at all, and the first few levels were a dull grind, but when we got to the dark hive bit it started to get fun (in spite of rolling those balls around), and it seemed to get better and better from there.

Although the last thing we did before returning it was the monster truck highway run with pigs rolling barrells off their trucks - and you've drove past them by the time they get the barrells off.  :lol

there is a single player expansion out. Looks hilarious from the trailer, I'll have to rent Duke shortly and play this.

You know, future Duke Nukem games would probably work better as monthly adventures for $5.

Duke Nukem isn't going to be funny again until the game becomes one big joke on Duke. Like he's some loser asshole that somehow saves the world and has this warped notion that the people around him think he's the greatest of all time. I get that Duke has had a resurgence in popularity thanks to Ventrilo Harassment but those jokes work because of the reaction to them, you can't take "Balls balls balls of steel" and think it'll be as funny.

Maybe this'll be funny.

I grew up playing Duke 3d and my sense of humor is largely unchanged from when I was 12 years old, so I still find Duke hilarious.
