This is breaking news just coming in as I type this, emanating from the Twitter account of GAINAX's Yasuhiro Takeda, but it appears that the renowned and much-admired anime director Satoshi Kon passed away today at the age of 47.

During his life, Kon was responsible for a numer of high-profile animated efforts featuring his distinctive themes and styles, not least the movies Perfect Blue and Paprika, as well as the Paranoia Agent television series.

I'm sure it goes without saying that Satoshi Kon's influence will be immensely missed by anime fans around the world, and our thoughts go out to his friends and family with this tragic news.

So young.

Yeah, I was just about to say that Miyazaki's getting pretty old and might only have a couple more movies left in him. With Kon dead and Miyazaki on his way out the door, the entire industry is on the verge of collapse. :-\

I was actually reading an article a few days ago where it said that if Ghibli's latest movie didn't do well [it did, so don't worry] that they were actually thinking about halting movie production altogether and just handling the licenses of their previous movies.

He wasn't a great anime director, he was a great director, period. Perfect Blue is like the best De Palma movie he never made. Hell, there isn't anything of his that I didn't just flat out love.

It sucks knowing that there's decades of movies from him that I'll never get to see. Its terrible that such a big talent had to die in his prime.

He didn't technically direct the piece, but it fits in too darn well with the rest of his solo work to not include amongst his now limited list of great achivements.
