This is breaking news just coming in as I type this, emanating from the Twitter account of GAINAX's Yasuhiro Takeda, but it appears that the renowned and much-admired anime director Satoshi Kon passed away today at the age of 47.

During his life, Kon was responsible for a numer of high-profile animated efforts featuring his distinctive themes and styles, not least the movies Perfect Blue and Paprika, as well as the Paranoia Agent television series.

I'm sure it goes without saying that Satoshi Kon's influence will be immensely missed by anime fans around the world, and our thoughts go out to his friends and family with this tragic news.

So young.

Really sad news, the guy was one of the few extremely talented directors working in anime today. Millenium Actress is one of my favorite films of all time. I wonder what will happen to Yume Robo/Dream Machine?

He made my favorite film of all time.

He was also the man with great music taste who kept Hirasawa Susumu in the public spotlight through his films. Now Susumu will end up scoring loli-robot show or something

Yeah, I was just about to say that Miyazaki's getting pretty old and might only have a couple more movies left in him. With Kon dead and Miyazaki on his way out the door, the entire industry is on the verge of collapse. $:-\$

I was actually reading an article a few days ago where it said that if Ghibli's latest movie didn't do well [it did, so don't worry] that they were actually thinking about halting movie production altogether and just handling the licenses of their previous movies.

This fucking sucks.

He wasn't a great anime director, he was a great director, period. Perfect Blue is like the best De Palma movie he never made. Hell, there isn't anything of his that I didn't just flat out love.

It sucks knowing that there's decades of movies from him that I'll never get to see. Its terrible that such a big talent had to die in his prime.

In the anime thread there is discussion about a show where school girls play pop music and another where a guy fires bullets that travel between a teenager's bouncing breasts. Then I read this news about someone extremely talented, who was still putting out excellent material, dying at a relatively early age. Time to jump ship on this hobby.
