cruncheon-san.... -_-;;;;;

Is there gonna be a UMD release for this?
-
Yeah, Classic Dungeon has this dumb 30 mins of story at the start. After that it's basically story free awesome, but I have no idea what they were thinking.
Is there gonna be a UMD release for this?
Probably not, but who cares it's $20. I don't mind digital releases for $20 and under games that are a steal.

That's pretty good. I liked the story screenshot callout for "hot in an 8-bit sense."

Nice writeup. Explains why the game is really addicting. I loved it but I had 2 complaints in the Japanese version:
1. Too many weeds/mud in random dungeon. Kind of irratating
2. Instead of having 8000 pieces of loot like Disgaea and crew, which would make the game infinitely playable for weeks, the game has like 20 swords, 20 pieces of armor. So it's done after about 20 hours, nothing left to do. This is why I want a sequel that improves on the gameplay while adding 8000 pieces of loot. Also Japanese version was $50 as opposed to $20, so I wouldn't have minded the low content as much if it'd been $20.
Also a huge DLC came out later in Japan, should come out later in the US as well. It gives you a new random dungeon that is closer to the item world from Disgaea. Instead of starting at lvl.1 with lvl.1 monsters and lvl.1 loot. You start at the level of your atk+def stat / 4. This means you jump right into great loot and tough monsters. Good stuff, but I'm guessing it's not in the originally game because it'd make it really short and no one would ever use the ran-geon.
PSPS. Remember that the reason why you guys like this game so much is because System Prisma who is the developer is a chunk of N1 that made Soul Nomad (which also had awesome creative gameplay) and then when SN bombed and N1 said "shit we need to focus on DISGAEA DISGAEA DISGAEA", these guys split off as System Prisma to keep doing original creative games, just on a super low budget. They just put out DOT DEFENSE for $12 on J-PSN yesterday as their next game following Classic Dungeon. It's a spin on the Tower Defense genre that includes a level editor so people can make their own tower defense levels and share them. I bought it yesterday but haven't had a chance to install. I hate Tower Defense genre so I'm pissed they did this instead of Classic Dungeon 2, but whatever maybe it'll convert me. I just want to support these guys as they make better gameplay than the main N1.

Never thought I'd be into Japanese RPGs, but with this, Persona 3 Portable, and Phantasy Star Portable 2, I'm actually enjoying J-RPG gaming for the first time in...ever. Might take the plunge on Valyria 2 too but I still have the original sitting here unplayed.
-
It's a good genre, nothing wrong with being late to it. Just means there's more great stuff to play ;)
My goal every gen is to play every rpg released (wrpg/jrpg/srpg) because I love the genre and it's so much fun. I start off keeping up for the first year or two and then the amount of releases shoots up yearly and I get way behind and spend the first year or two of the next gen catching up. ^^; I'd say at best I maybe got through 80% of the rpgs last gen and I'm around 60=70% of the rpgs this gen so far.

:bow psp, keepin' j-gaming real :bow2

No, it really doesn't...it's not like I haven't tried out tons of J-RPGs in the past...I just think 99% of them suck. :P Typical turn-based and strategy/RPG games are just not for me. ESPECIALLY anything made by Square.
I liked Phantasy Star Online and Persona 1 and 2 (what I played of them) back then, so it's not really a surprise I like P3P and PSP2, I guess.
-
Well I think it's a case of you liking:
1. Games that are real-time loot based (PSP, Classic Dungeon, etc...)
2. Games that are stylish and dark (Persona)
You'd probably like Soma Bringer on DS (there's a full fan-translation) and Strange Journey. There are others but I can't think back at the moment.
-
I started playing DOT DEFENSE and oh man oh man is it good.
Imagine tower defense with the crazy magic circle system from classic dungeon/room system from soul nomad + loot system from classic dungeon. I love how these guys take a normal game and add all kinds of complexities to make it addicting. If I find some time I'll do a general guide in case anyone wants to download it off J-PSN and give it a shot in Japanese. Since it's all stats it's not that import-unfriendly when you figure out the basic words.

In that write up, this:
The gameplay in Cladun is simplicity itself. The preparation, on the other hand, and the sense of advancement is deep and satisfying. It reminds me of a game where you have to configure a mech or outfit a spaceship with a bunch of components. There's a gratifying sense of setting up different builds for different situations. If you find that a dungeon is too challenging, a lot of times a different character with a different configuration can just breeze right through it. In fact, many of the mission dungeons are like puzzles that require certain types of builds. And when you consider all the variables that go into the random dungeons, that's where you can really run your builds through a gauntlet, not to mention the best place to earn experience and look for powerful magic items.
is what sold me on this game I haven't heard of before.

have you tried YS 7?

No, but I will likely give that a shot too at some point. Again, with Cladun, PSP2, and Persona 3 to play, I think that's more than enough.
-
Yeah, I think you'd dig Ys. It has loot and it's better than modern Zelda.
-
I've been meaning to get into the Ys series, and if I got one now it'd scratch my JRPG itch I have atm. Is Ys 7 a good entry into the series?
-
Definitely. It's very accessible and good times.
-
Spent my lunch hour running over to Gamestop and picking up Ys 7. Excited to play it :hyper
-
The game won't tell you, but there is a DMC style Just Guard. Hold R and tap L to guard. If you do it at the last minute you take no damage, your next hit is a critical and your meters fill. So it's good to use :)

Danke!
