Title: Minecraft Appreciation Thread
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on October 01, 2010, 04:49:04 PM
Just kidding, Minecraft is boring.

However, it has given some bored nerds an excuse to re-create everything that's ever appeared on the Internet in a pixelated microcosm of self-referential wankery. So there's that.

I just bought this this morning.

I dug out an enormous hole in the side of a mountain and then I stacked some rocks on top of one another.

I don't get it.

I went out to a bar last night and spoke to a couple people who each independently mentioned Minecraft to me, and proceeded to rave and rave about how awesome and addicting it is.

So I bought it.  I do admit that it's sort of addicting, in the "maybe if I keep playing, something will happen soon" sort of way.

My experience with Minecraft is basically:
-ok, what is this? I'll run around and look for something
-ok, something killed me wtf (ask what happened on gaf)
-ok, I need shelter, equipment, resources, and all that
-ok, some enemy just blew up my house (ask what happened on gaf)
-ok, doors are important.  I'll build a new house in a good location.

then it gets fuzzy and I could swear my clock was playing tricks on me while I focused on building my house.  After my house was alright enough, I started to dig underground and get more resources to build better things.

Most people seem to get into servers with other people and build things with others like in Garry's Mod.  I haven't tried that much, but I can understand the appeal since I was addicted to Garry's Mod years ago.

You can play it for free, I guess. Don't know what the benefit of not paying for it is, yet.

You can save your game, play the 'game' mode (where you have to gather resources and fend off zombies) and play multiplayer.

If they expanded on the Survival mode I'd be interested in this. Right now it just feels like tedious busy work.
Title: Re: Minecraft Appreciation Thread
Post by: Robo on October 03, 2010, 10:57:02 PM
If you're playing Alpha, it only feels like busy work at first when you're very slim on supplies.  After you get some decent equipment, a fair amount of iron ingots and a "base" put together, you're more free to build shit or go exploring for underground dungeons, and you probably won't ever have to scrounge around for basic resources again.

Admittedly, I'd have given up on it by now, but the game can be pretty fucking creepy at times.  Being deep underground in tiny labyrinthian corridors, trying to locate a dungeon based on the sound of zombies moaning through the walls, in addition to the eerie music -- it's kinda freaky.

The retro look probably helps with that. I find sometimes that less detail lets my mind fill in more gaps, improving my overall feeling.
Title: Re: Minecraft Appreciation Thread
Post by: Robo on October 04, 2010, 10:47:34 AM
The scale is impressive too.  While the game is stupidly simplistic, the scale is pretty fucking immense; narrow tunnels can stretch as far as you can make them (since the world is infinite), and you can happen upon underground caverns as inversely big as mountains, complete with lava waterfalls dozens of stories high.  I think that adds to the immersion as well.

I've been trying to work out how I can build a glass tunnel through the ocean to another island I found and run a minecart track through it to connect the two.  I think that would be pretty awesome.

It's stupidly addicting.  I actually haven't played it in awhile because I'm afraid to double click the icon.  I know if I do, I'm gonna be up all night long doing... nothing.

Changes for the Halloween update:

Excited about the watch feature, not excited about the torch update.  If lanterns cost iron to make, that's gonna really suck butt.

Supposedly all currently placed torches and all of those in your inventory will become lanterns when the update is implemented, so be sure to load up before the 31st.

Can't you just block up the source hole?  Not sure if the spilled lava will dry up, though.

If not, you might be able to "replace" it with blocks, then break them and see if it goes away.

As if Patel needed more ammo:

http://kotaku.com/5669766/minecraft-under-siege-by-angry-addicts-demanding-more-updates?skyline=true&s=i
Quote
Addictive indie computer game Minecraft was knocked off it's little block wheels yesterday apparently by a group of self-identifying disenfranchised Minecraft players demanding more updates from the game's creator.

Developer Notch writes that the game's servers are getting hammered by a distributed denial of service, or DDOS, attack.

"A real world example would be running up to the cashier at a super market and paying in small coins, counting every single one really slowly, then finding out at the end you didn't have enough in the first place," Notch wrote on his Tumblr today. "The "Distributed" means it's done from a lot of places at the same time, so it's much harder to simply deny access to the clients that do that. Usually this is done via computers infected with trojans, so people participate in this without even knowing they're doing it.

"As to why minecraft.net is being targeted, I'm not sure."

A post on 4chan claiming responsibility for the attack says that the group launched the DDOS because they want more updates from Notch. They also point out they are not active 4chan members or people from rival games.

Here's the full statement. Do keep in mind we have no way of knowing whether these really are the people behind the ongoing attack.

Quote
Minecraft is currently experiencing a stimulation provided by us.

It's purpose is to send Notch a clear message of how the future of minecraft will turn out unless he gets to work, namely by influencing the amount of sales taking place, due to the attacks.

Start providing your customers with the updates that you promise them.

We have roughly 83,000 bots available, and preserved for this seizure, we could if we wanted to keep this going for weeks, however we have decided to give it a week, and see whether or not your attitude, and commitment will change, we believe it will when money stops rolling in for the time being...

anyhow, no we're not from roblox, or any other minecraft clone, not to mention none of us have been around 4chan for years, and nor has any real 4channers for that matter, its all newfags now, and has been for quite a few years."

Is the official quote. I don't know the origin of the quote, but it is happening.

I don't see the point.  They announced a significant update for next week nearly three weeks ago.  Your update is coming, you impatient, childish fuckwits.

I built a house with an enormous pier right on the beach and it took me like 5 hours, but I think it looks like shit because it's all wooden boards and is monotonous and bland.  And then I saw some pictures on GAF of a dude that did the same thing, except for a whole fucking castle, using wood blocks instead of boards, and it looks awesome.

I can't even imagine how much time it took to get that many wood blocks.  It took me like four day cycles just to get enough boards for my measly pier.

So yeah, I get the thing about it being disheartening.

Yeah, the bridge is kinda ugly, but it's neat when you walk through it. You're basically underwater.  In the background is a proof of concept thing, it's a floating tower of water. I wanna build one way, way, way up high (That one is like 48 blocks or so?) and have it feed into my work-in-progress garden.

So, I kinda lost my mind and decided to build a fountain on top of a tree that I grew inside my house. The problem was tht I want the fountain to startf rom the maximum 54 blocks up or whatever. I kind of mis-calculated and built this infinite water fountain that ENCASED MY HOUSE IN WATER. The fountain part worked, but it als poured out all over the house.

I just spent like 2 hours molding the water. Kind of fucked it up. Oh well! Still neat.

(http://imgur.com/sURje.jpg) This is the backyard patio area. It's encased in water!

(http://imgur.com/6tnsf.jpg) This is the house. The roof got all fucked up because of all the water molds. :( That tree is HUGE. It just like showed up after sitting outside as a sapling for like 10 hours. It has like 4 trunks, it's really strange. You can see the endless fountain, haha.

Haha, Yeah, that was my avatar back on GAF. As for the origin? I think I just saw it some goofy blog and stole it. It's still hotlinked there. I figure when it finally bites the dust I'll change it.

The only thing sucky about it is that it doesn't affect your currently generated land in your current game(s).  You'll need to walk beyond what's been generated so far in order to see the biomes... or start over.

Beta begins December 20th.  :hyper

Quote
With Beta comes a larger focus on polish and content, and we’ll start early on with adding proper modding support with a stable API, and we’d love all input we can get on this from the modders out there. We’ll also add some kind of non-intrusive narrative to the game to help drive the game experience early on, and to provide some kind of late game goal. There will be a bigger focus on testing and stability as well, with more time between updates.

When the game enters beta, the price will rise to 14.95 Euro.

We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.

Soon, you will be able to buy gift codes for Minecraft, perfectly timed for the holidays! Even better, if you buy those before December 20, accounts created from these codes will count as alpha accounts, and will receive all future updates for free.

And the next game update (with server-side inventory) is coming next week, before Beta

The thing to note is the price increase and the implication that future updates will likely involve microtransactions.  If you have any interest in this game at all, buy it before the 20th.

I'm pretty sure Notch has spoken about adding a full-fledged single player story mode to Minecraft, but atm it's just an engine sandbox.

Nothing says, "I love you" like provoking someone to aimlessly tunnel under the earth for hours on end.

Or, if you're like pilonv, you can buy a gift account (which at the moment are considered Alpha accounts), hold on to it to see if the game ever ends up being something you're interested in, and if it doesn't, you can thoughtfully give it to someone as a present next year!  Win/win.

I've been spending my time building this awesome house. There's the moat [which I already mentioned], but I also built numerous tunnels and bridges so that I can access various areas at night without having to engage any monster. One of the tunnels connects my house to a mine I've been digging out, even found a room with a zombie spawn point and some chests, which I looted. The most recent project I finished was a bridge that connect the third story of my house to a nearby hill.

I lost all of my diamond gear when the last update came out because they had fucking mobs respawning in lit caverns for a little while.  A creeper snuck up behind me as I was mining and exploded without warning, dropping me down into some underground lava lake.  Apparently there was a glitch where you didn't drop items when you got killed, but it didn't matter anyway because all my stuff would've burned up.

They've since fixed both of these things.  The respawn thing was intentional, but didn't work primarily because the sound is broken --not only do the mobs not always make sound, but when they do, the sound isn't directional, and it might even be coming from behind a wall somewhere.  This is especially irritating when the most silent mob EXPLODES and smashes the landscape.  It wasn't fun.  And I expect it'll come back at some point, unfortunately.

My main house is a sprawling compound now, with two entrances to caves connected directly to it and a fourth floor parapet for surveying my kingdom. I also built another four story house some distance away near a pit I was trying to dig out, but it required some heavy strip mining to be viable and that was taking too long. Then there's my mountaintop fortress that I just built, which is accessibly through a tunnel that begins at the bottom and goes all the way up through the mountain to the house. Now I think I'm going to head out into the world, see what's out there.

I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I just figured out a way to dupe. Load up a game, take something out of your chest and put it into your inventory, then ALT F4. The game saves the contents of your inventory but nothing else, so when you load the game back up the item is in your inventory still and back in the chest.

You don't think it's slightly unethical to declare a date when the game would no longer be "free forever" or whatever and declare it in official beta, but not actually add any features, simply to increase sales of a game that's already made him millions of dollars?  On top of that, the update actually broke the game (any items dropped out of inventory are duped online).  Granted business ethics is an oxymoron but it just seems shady to me.

Also doesn't work for mac users anymore.  :lol

* Made SMP servers save chunks way less often in most cases. Chunks don’t resave if they got saved in the last 30 seconds
* Moving too far away from a container, or having it blow up, closes the inventory screen
* Fixed /kill
* Introduced leaf decay again. It acts differently from before
* You can now throw eggs
* On a whim, added super exclusive clan cloaks for Mojang Employees
* .. and something else, which is even more rare

Interior has little that can only be accessed by walking along the rafters.  That's where I stash the shrooms.

This map is stupid.  I discovered a cavern after tunneling down just behind my house that never seems to end.  I've spent hours and hours putting up fucking torches and haven't come to any sort of dead end.  I have to keep turning back for fear of getting lost.  Even so, I've still managed to mine several dozen diamonds, find several dungeons, tons of gold, and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of iron ore; there's no way in hell I could even mine it all.  Gotta start over so I can be playing SURVIVAL again, rather than fat, lucrative landowner.

Title: Re: Minecraft Appreciation Thread

Above ground, make a compass.  It always points to your spawn point.

Below ground is a hell of a lot trickier.  I just sort of wing it.  I kinda round off a central "room" so that it no longer looks randomly generated and set down some chests and stuff for quick storage and retrieval, so that helps somewhat.  I guess you could also put up some signs, but who the hell wants to do that?

"Survival" is a bit of a misnomer at the moment; once you find shelter (which doesn't have to be any more than a hole in the wall with a door on it) and get some basic supplies (wood, stone, iron ore), your (self-appointed) goal is more to explore and build to your liking.  There isn't much endangering your basic survival at this point.  Mobs can still kill you, of course, but you'll have the resources to get yourself well-equipped enough to deal with it.

If you do happen to die, your stuff pops out of your corpse to be retrieved and you respawn at the place you started when you first loaded the map (and for this reason, you shouldn't venture too far out before establishing your first base).

I just love exploration, and it sounds like it's got a ton of it, even if it's all procedurally generated.

It's part of the magic. I don't give a fuck about procedural generation. But Minecraft has this weird thing where like. All of a sudden you find a cave and it's like it's been there waiting for you all this time. It's a weird thing.

Here is my world.

This is my starting fortress and my coworkers place. Notice the lava waterfall and the sweet underwater tunnel.

Here is a cool walled off area we are developing...

...complete with floating desert dome and tower...

... and our grand train station that connects the underground rail system with the above ground.

Dig like 25 blocks under the surface?

I meant one surrounded by water on all sides, made from glass. Anyway, I already built it, so whatever.

Beardo, how do you get screenshots like that?

Camouflage?

That's the idea, yeah, I've got a hilltop castle and a walled-off area around it. Basically, cover it with dirt so it just looks like any other hill.

Of course, it would take thousands of blocks of dirt, but, hey, what else is there to do, right?  :lol

Minecraft Beta 1.3

* Implemented a new lighting engine with the help of MrMessiahs (can be turned off)
* Changed the options around, added a new “Graphics options” button
* Added beds. If all players in a map sleeps in a bed during night, the game immediately skips until morning
* Added three new half-size blocks
* Added Delay/Repeater redstone dust blocks
* Added whitelisting to the server. To use, enter “whitelist <cmd>” where cmd is “on”, “off”, “add <player>”, “remove <player>”, “list” or “reload”
* New save file format, old maps need to be converted (that might take a while..)
* It’s now possible to have more than five save slots, and to rename saves
* Scrollbars in both the texture pack list, and in the map selection screen
* Replaced the Mojang splash image to reflect the new logo colors
* .. and a bunch of bug fixes and tweaks!

Yesboks and gankfest are basically destroying this server. They built a massive floating platform all the way around the protected spawn area and at the maximum height and now they're building a ring of lava all the way around the whole thing. The amount raw materials alone is enough to make me suspect heavy use of hacks, to say nothing of all the lava. Also, you can place block to push back the lava because it's falling inside the protected zone, effectively sealing anyone inside the spawn area with a home base to TP to.

Edit: yesboks, gankfest, and lerva are now permanently banned.

If you update you wont be able to connect to our server as we are waiting for bukkit to release the 1.5 compatible server files, they are holding back untill notch releases a stable patch sine 1.5 had some nasty bugs.

Notch has released a 1.5_01 update but bukkit are still holding off.

Follow the details of bukkit here: http://bukkit.org/

And updates from notch here: http://twitter.com/#!/notch

I will be keeping the server 1.4 untill bukkit updates or nothing will work, should only be a few days at the most depending on notch and bukkit tho.

If you did update download this and set it to 1.4_01

Bumpity bump.

1.7 is live, and there's a glitch with the pistons where it can make infinite copies of a block.  I've exploited it until my heart's content.  I now have a chest full of diamond blocks.  It'll remove some of the challenge of the game, but my favorite part is really exploring with my friends anyway, so I'm completely cool with it.

Also, I'm working on a wheat farm powered by pistons.  Not sure how tall I'm gonna make it yet, but it's gonna be sweeeet.   63 plants per floor.
Title: Re: Minecraft Appreciation Thread
Post by: tehjaybo on July 06, 2011, 03:39:01 AM
If I find something to do, I can stay on for hours.  My wheat farm is 7 stories tall, and has a pretty neat water piston system going for it.  Full capacity yield for it is  441 wheat and 500+ seeds.  Considering making a video for it, but it's pretty plain, and I know I'm not the first to do it, so I may not.

-Hunger

please don't be awful

From the Wiki:

Quote
One of the new aspects of the game added in the Adventure Update is the Food Bar, which governs several aspects of gameplay. Eating food, instead of directly restoring the player's Health, now fills up the Food Bar, which is constantly draining very, very slowly.

If the Food Bar is 90%-100% full you will slowly regenerate health, but if you let it drain all the way to 0%, you will constantly lose half a heart instead, as you are starving to death. On Easy difficulty, the player's health would stop dropping at 5 hearts, Normal stops at 1/2 a heart, and on Hard it will keep draining until you die.

Contrary to popular belief, having a full Food Bar does not keep your health bar from completely depleting.

While the player is sprinting, the Food Bar will deplete faster than when not sprinting and will be unable to sprint at all once the bar falls to 30% or less.

This game mechanic would allow food to be stacked, increasing the amount of food one can carry in their inventory at a time. It has been hinted that this will be added when Hardcore mode is added. Despite that fact, some community modders have already created Single Player mods and Multiplayer mods, both of which incorporate the hunger mechanic.

The Food Bar does not drain when playing on Peaceful mode, but its effects on your character's health bar remain.

When you eat Rotten Flesh, your Food Bar gets poisoned and depletes faster. There is also a small chance of your food bar poisoning every time you eat Raw Chicken.

Also, cows drop meat now, quite a bit actually, and it's all stackable.

Server is hackomatic.com, just join up and there should be a sign at spawn pointing the way to the city.

So far, nothing is really explored yet.  There aren't a lot of people, so if you guys wanna make Boreville somewhere, that would be pretty awesome.  I've been popping on most nights, starting up a little underground base like usual.  Having a lot of fun so far with 1.0.   Haven't had a chance to check out Enchanting or Alchemy yet, but I plan to soon.

Side note, mobs are turned off for now.
