Minecraft Appreciation Thread

Just kidding, Minecraft is boring.

However, it has given some bored nerds an excuse to re-create everything that's ever appeared on the Internet in a pixelated microcosm of self-referential wankery. So there's that.

I just bought this this morning.

I dug out an enormous hole in the side of a mountain and then I stacked some rocks on top of one another.

I don't get it.

I went out to a bar last night and spoke to a couple people who each independently mentioned Minecraft to me, and proceeded to rave and rave about how awesome and addicting it is.

So I bought it.  I do admit that it's sort of addicting, in the "maybe if I keep playing, something will happen soon" sort of way.

My experience with Minecraft is basically:
-ok, what is this? I'll run around and look for something
-ok, something killed me wtf (ask what happened on gaf)
-ok, I need shelter, equipment, resources, and all that
-ok, some enemy just blew up my house (ask what happened on gaf)
-ok, doors are important.  I'll build a new house in a good location.

then it gets fuzzy and I could swear my clock was playing tricks on me while I focused on building my house.  After my house was alright enough, I started to dig underground and get more resources to build better things.

Most people seem to get into servers with other people and build things with others like in Garry's Mod.  I haven't tried that much, but I can understand the appeal since I was addicted to Garry's Mod years ago.

What, the fire? Yes, fire completely consumes wood, and all the floating glass disappears by the next day.

You can play it for free, I guess. Don't know what the benefit of not paying for it is, yet.

You can save your game, play the 'game' mode (where you have to gather resources and fend off zombies) and play multiplayer.

If you're playing Alpha, it only feels like busy work at first when you're very slim on supplies.  After you get some decent equipment, a fair amount of iron ingots and a "base" put together, you're more free to build shit or go exploring for underground dungeons, and you probably won't ever have to scrounge around for basic resources again.

Admittedly, I'd have given up on it by now, but the game can be pretty fucking creepy at times.  Being deep underground in tiny labyrinthian corridors, trying to locate a dungeon based on the sound of zombies moaning through the walls, in addition to the eerie music -- it's kinda freaky.

The scale is impressive too.  While the game is stupidly simplistic, the scale is pretty fucking immense; narrow tunnels can stretch as far as you can make them (since the world is infinite), and you can happen upon underground caverns as inversely big as mountains, complete with lava waterfalls dozens of stories high.  I think that adds to the immersion as well.

I've been trying to work out how I can build a glass tunnel through the ocean to another island I found and run a minecart track through it to connect the two.  I think that would be pretty awesome.

It's stupidly addicting.  I actually haven't played it in awhile because I'm afraid to double click the icon.  I know if I do, I'm gonna be up all night long doing... nothing.

Changes for the Halloween update:

Excited about the watch feature, not excited about the torch update.  If lanterns cost iron to make, that's gonna really suck butt.

Supposedly all currently placed torches and all of those in your inventory will become lanterns when the update is implemented, so be sure to load up before the 31st.

Can't you just block up the source hole?  Not sure if the spilled lava will dry up, though.

If not, you might be able to "replace" it with blocks, then break them and see if it goes away.

As if Patel needed more ammo:

http://kotaku.com/5669766/minecraft-under-siege-by-angry-addicts-demanding-more-updates?skyline=true&s=i
Quote
Addictive indie computer game Minecraft was knocked off it's little block wheels yesterday apparently by a group of self-identifying disenfranchised Minecraft players demanding more updates from the game's creator.

Developer Notch writes that the game's servers are getting hammered by a distributed denial of service, or DDOS, attack.

"A real world example would be running up to the cashier at a super market and paying in small coins, counting every single one really slowly, then finding out at the end you didn't have enough in the first place," Notch wrote on his Tumblr today. "The "Distributed" means it's done from a lot of places at the same time, so it's much harder to simply deny access to the clients that do that. Usually this is done via computers infected with trojans, so people participate in this without even knowing they're doing it.

"As to why minecraft.net is being targeted, I'm not sure."

A post on 4chan claiming responsibility for the attack says that the group launched the DDOS because they want more updates from Notch. They also point out they are not active 4chan members or people from rival games.

Here's the full statement. Do keep in mind we have no way of knowing whether these really are the people behind the ongoing attack.

Quote
Minecraft is currently experiencing a stimulation provided by us.

It's purpose is to send Notch a clear message of how the future of minecraft will turn out unless he gets to work, namely by influencing the amount of sales taking place, due to the attacks.

Start providing your customers with the updates that you promise them.

We have roughly 83,000 bots available, and preserved for this seizure, we could if we wanted to keep this going for weeks, however we have decided to give it a week, and see whether or not your attitude, and commitment will change, we believe it will when money stops rolling in for the time being...

anyhow, no we're not from roblox, or any other minecraft clone, not to mention none of us have been around 4chan for years, and nor has any real 4channers for that matter, its all newfags now, and has been for quite a few years."

Is the official quote. I don't know the origin of the quote, but it is happening.

I don't see the point.  They announced a significant update for next week nearly three weeks ago.  Your update is coming, you impatient, childish fuckwits.
