Title: The new Kanye
Post by: GilloD on November 18, 2010, 03:54:05 AM
Is ridiculously fucking sick. Thoughts? A super ballsy intro track for a major label record for a serious star like Kanye.

Kanye just needs to be a musician and not an artist. Though it's better than I expected.

Kanye's "mediocre" rap has more depth than any other rapper in today's world because he raps about shit that is actually relevant. People who complain about Kanye's rapping are like people who complain about Tupac's rapping.
Title: Re: The new Kanye

Oh please. I'm obviously comparing Tupac's penchant for lyrics more so than flow. Kanye is in the same boat.

Seriously, are we going to break down rap music like distinguished effete fellows?  Lyrics and flow?  Shiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

The new album is awesome though.  I don't listen to a lot of rap, but Kanye I like.  Especially this.

Still listening to it but so far it's not as good as CD or LR and artistically and musically it's a step down from 808s.

Also, Runaway sucked shit.

Will have to give it a second spin listening to the lyrics. But on first spin, it's impressive but not great.

The more I listen the more I see what Kanye has learned from 808s. I think it's a really good thing. Aside from a few tracks, this doesn't sound like a typical hip hop album. Finished second listen and it's a grower for sure. I'll analyze the lyrics on third listen.

Title: Re: The new Kanye
Post by: Himu on November 19, 2010, 03:34:32 PM
You know I'm right. Tell me the appeal of Kanye over other rappers? His appeal for me used to be he would take relevant issues or in the case of 808s, personal issues, and document them in his songs. He is now just any other rapper.

What's the benefit of listening to Kanye over Rick Ross? Production? That makes the rapper himself disposable and pointless. If that's the case, why listen to rap?
Title: Re: The new Kanye
Post by: TakingBackSunday on November 19, 2010, 03:38:03 PM
I like the message he's conveying in this album regarding his personal image...and besides, why do you place so much importance on lyrics to begin with?  Throughout history the best lyricists aren't necessarily the best artists in their genre.  Rap is the same, because there's so much more to rap than lyrics.

He's always, to me, been an artist first, rapper second.  This is just continuing in this vein.
Title: Re: The new Kanye
Post by: Robo on November 19, 2010, 03:46:22 PM
Kanye has no appeal as a rapper over other rappers - he's a mediocre talent in that regard and his lyrics only potentially lessen the quality of every song he appears on.  However, the guy is a brilliant producer and expert songcraftsman (for lack of a better term), and that's the primary appeal.
Title: Re: The new Kanye
Post by: Himu on November 19, 2010, 03:49:06 PM
Huh? How is this artist first, rapper second? The content in the album is cliche to a tee. ???

His personal image? ??? It's typical rap fronting and egotistical aspersions. Kanye was always stuck up, but he never really bragged on his actual songs. In fact, in many cases he would be honest and humble.

The reason I place lyrics in terms of importance is because, once you get past that, what is left? Rock has better music making, electro has better production, funk touches the heart, jazz can be played no matter what mood. If you listen for flow, what left is just a guy talking. Then what you have is a guy talking about how he emailed pics of his dick to some chick or how he fucked a pharoh's pussy.

That is not being an artist, that's making shit that sounds good for the sake of sounding good.

For me at least, the most memorable rap songs have always been about stories of struggle, or even good things, or being appreciative, or telling grim realities or going into their past and writing it down in words. Things that are relatable, actual topics, actual subjects that can be discussed. Otherwise, there is no point in rap. It is just a black guy talking about how he fucks mummies.

And this is why 808s will always be more artistically, albeit, flawed, above such drivel much to hip hop fans' dismay.

PS: The most successful rapper was all about lyrics, and even when he wasn't, he always balanced club/party with introspective. Balance is needed.

How are they cookie cutter? You really like to use that term a lot while pimping average rappers. I find the lyrcs and content in 808s to be more interesting. The singing doesn't bother me 808s either, though sometimes it's overbearing. I fail to see how it has poor production either. You can cite autotune, but the reality is that the autotune is mostly used on purpose as a device for depicting mood.

I can't see how in the world you can find any song on Dark Fantasy to be better than the best of what 808s has to offer. Say You Will alone has more depth than any song on Dark Fantasy.

Apparently, Kid Cudi wrote half the songs on 808s.

Also, I not once said that 808s is a perfect album. It is deeply flawed. But no Kanye album is perfect. Even College Dropout has some filler and shitty skits.

808 sounds like an artsy experiment going terribly wrong and the creator trying to understand what went wrong cause he's too arrogant, oh wait

Sorry Himu but this is just another example of your hypocrisy with regard to music. 808s is full of a bunch of variations of love/relationship songs. Whenever you lecture people on music you point to these songs as if they haven't been done a billion times - and in the case of 808s, been done far better with better production. Yet then you criticize hip hop for featuring themes/lyrics that have been done over and over. Your reasoning is laughable.

Second off, the depth of a song doesn't make it good. Dark Fantasy is beyond stellar on a production level, and it makes 808s sound amateur in comparison on every level. Kanye can't sing, and isn't a good lyricist, everyone agrees on that. Yet you find an album where he's singing off tune with autotune and crooning generic break up songs to be a work of genius.

I don't listen to Kanye expecting the lyrical dexterity of Common or the wit of MF DOOM. I listen because he's a dope ass mainstream producer with honest introspection in his music. Propping up music that doesn't rhyme isn't deep. As Shawn Carter would say, trying to kick knowledge? fuckouttahere

Nah, it's pretty much already guaranteed that they'll give it BNM.  They've been featuring Kanye on the playlist all year - the last four tracks, three of which are from MBDTF, all with a Best New Music tag and gushing written reviews.

Just like to pop in again and stress how shit 808s was.

It's like the overall theme of the album was "fuck it."  Everything seemed half assed.  Kanye probably thought it was a good idea, realized it wasn't halfway through, and then just pinched out the album accordingly.

This new album is almost an apology for 808s.

Not really. I just don't see why everyone thinks 808s is so dreadful. I just don't see it.  ??? It's an experimental, creative, yet extremely flawed album, but hardly shit.

So your idea of cookie cutter is a love song? Wow, that's some argument. Your argument is horrendous and full of holes. A theme is not cookie cutter. Love and relationship songs are not cookie cutter by themself, especially given content.

Let's take a look at some of the lyrics from Welcome to Heartbreak:

My friend showed me pictures of his kids
And all I could show him was pictures of my cribs
He said his daughter got a brand new report card (card)
And all I got was a brand new sports car

----

Dad cracked a joke all the kids laugh
But I couldn't hear em all the way in first class
Chased the good life my whole life long
Look back on my life and my life gone
Where did I go wrong?

----

And this is just one song.

bububububbubububububububut "cookie cutter" while pimping an album that features describing fucking a mummy pussy. You truly have fallen, Maurice.

Show me lyrics from Dark Fantasy that offer nearly as much introspection.

Quote
Second off, the depth of a song doesn't make it good. Dark Fantasy is beyond stellar on a production level, and it makes 808s sound amateur in comparison on every level. Kanye can't sing, and isn't a good lyricist, everyone agrees on that. Yet you find an album where he's singing off tune with autotune and crooning generic break up songs to be a work of genius.

I never said 808s was genius. I actually don't like a lot of some of the ideas. Like on Say You Will, was it really necessary to sing SO SAY YOU WILLLllllLLLLL? Fuck no. It wasn't. Production-wise, Dark Fantasy is great, I agree. But I still fail to see how it sounds amateur. It sounds different, minimalist, atmospheric and moody. It lacks the over production that is common in a lot of modern mainstream music and I think it sounds interesting.

Quote
I don't listen to Kanye expecting the lyrical dexterity of Common or the wit of MF DOOM. I listen because he's a dope ass mainstream producer with honest introspection in his music. Propping up music that doesn't rhyme isn't deep. As Shawn Carter would say, trying to kick knowledge? fuckouttahere

Where is the introspection in Dark Fantasy beyond muscle flexing? There is no introspection. It is Kanye drinking Kanye Kool-Aid. He is on his own dick as much as Jay-Z regularly is. I am honest and consistent with my tastes. You however are an enigma. This album is full of the exact same "Me Kool-Aid" that any other mainstream rapper likes to drink, especially Jay, that you love to hate oh so much, but it's a great album because...the production?

What happened here? The cards are on the table. Defend your position with actual content rather than "well...love/relationship songs are cookie-cutter". And before you mention it, yes, Robocop sucks ass.
Title: Re: The new Kanye

Never said Dark Fantasy is introspective. The lack of introspection doesn't make it better or worse than something more introspective.

More of a psychological analysis than a review, not to mention the lore building - Kanye's "exile" after the Swift incident seems to be this generation's version of the chaos that led to the White Album or the desperation that created Exile On Main St. Hell maybe I should write for them :smug

I pretty much agree though. I'd give it a 8.9

I think the last album that got that score was Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002.

I like FNL because to me it's like an old fashioned rap album not some wannabe genre blurring piece of 'art'.

I wouldn't say DF is anything near a "wannabe" album.  It's a legitimately artful piece of work.  So is J.Cole's, but his mixtape, like his other ones, are too long with a lot of filler.  Great rapper, but his actual album is going to need fine tuned, cutting a lot of the fat that goes along with his mixtapes.

True. It's a close competition. Kanye wins on production, Cole wins on lyrics. I'd put the best songs on FNL up against the best on DF though

Dark Fantasy is absolutely better than the other three.  The Suburbs is maybe competition, but its too long.

With the Age of Adz, indie-darling Soof-yan Stee-venz, like kindred spirit Rick Allen, channels his recovery from a debilitating neurological disease into absolute electro reinvention; he's grown as the lone alt-flower abloom in a garden of withered posies.  9.7

Kanye records 80 minutes of self-aggrandizing over tribal drums and Robert Fripp-esque guitar noodles because his mom is still dead and, in spite of his half-assed efforts to change everyone's mind, people still hate him for being a fuckin' turdbuglar.  Better than 808s, tho.  8.3

Also loving this. Would be better without all that silly talky stuff of course but I suppose young persons demand that sort of thing nowadays.

I'll just be straight up. I grew up on the very beginning of rap and early in my life was a pretty big rap fan. As time went on though the music bored me. It became mostly stagnant thematically, lyrically, and worse musically a long while back. I barely listen to it and actively avoid it at this stage. The music no longer speaks to the person I grew up to be.

If more hip-hop was as inventive musically as this album I would listen to the genre a lot more. On a lark I put this on my ipod before a recent long car trip. I had heard good things about the album but often I hear "good things" about certain "recent" hip hop like lil Wayne which I think is over-rated crap so I wasn't expecting much. I thought I'd play a song or two and then switch to an audio book but I was really impressed. Musically this was the most interesting album from hip hop I've heard in a long fucking time. (Probably since Madvillainy) I was really impressed and got addicted to listening to this. I love how musical it actually is yet not pretentious which a lot of "alternative" rap falls into.  But its still real hip-hop. But its better than just simple old hip-hop. Its a lot more ambitious than that.

My only real regret is that lyrically I didn't find it that interesting. Which is only disappointing to me because the music is so bold and fucking outstanding that I wish it was of the same level. But whatever. A really amazing piece of work.

fucking bow.

I have and I've always liked Kanye to a certain point but this album musically is a lot more impressive than those albums for me. This is essentially his Purple Rain level musical leap quality wise.
